Guidelines For Environmental Considerations In Occupational Therapy Home Programs For Arthritis, Lori Pachl Jan 2009

Guidelines For Environmental Considerations In Occupational Therapy Home Programs For Arthritis, Lori Pachl

Occupational Therapy Capstones

Problem: Occupational therapists frequently provide service to patients with arthritis within a variety of settings. The symptoms of arthritis can be detrimental to a patient's ability to participate in their daily functional activities. Pain, limitation in motion and decreased strength frequently disrupt the individual's ability to complete daily activities which can have a depressing affect. Historically through today, patients report that these symptoms increase with changes in weather conditions.

Changes in barometric pressure, humidity, cold temperatures and levels of precipitation have been reported by patients to affect their arthritic symptoms and pain levels (Aikman, 1996; Guedj, 1990; McAlindon, 2007; & …

(2009) Caring For The “Self As One Among Others”, Laurance J. Splitter

Collected Papers of Laurance J. Splitter

n this paper, I explore some underpinnings of the community of inquiry (CoI), viewed as the primary mode of classroom organization in Philosophy for Children but also as a pedagogic, personal and inter-personal framework for teaching and learning in any subject area. I will argue that the CoI provides a model of both personal and intellectual development which exemplifies how classroom teaching and learning may be seen both as forms of care and of self-care.

Adopting A New Approach To Medical Information For Adoptees, Jessica Marie Yoke Jan 2009

Adopting A New Approach To Medical Information For Adoptees, Jessica Marie Yoke

Richmond Public Interest Law Review

Some estimates indicate that at least six million adoptees lived in the United States in 1997. "After factoring in birth parents and adoptive parents for each adoptee, the number of persons directly affected by the adoption process grows to over [twenty-four million] persons." States conducted many of these adoptions privately, particularly those that did not occur recently, so the parties remain anonymous to one another. Thus, an enormous number of Americans are now struggling in a system built on antiquated law that is not very useful, and in fact might be harmful. This Comment proposes a solution to this overlooked …

Job Loss And The Fraying Of The Implicit Employment Contract, Kevin F. Hallock Jan 2009

Job Loss And The Fraying Of The Implicit Employment Contract, Kevin F. Hallock

Economics Faculty Publications

Most workers have one employment contract that is explicit and another one that is implicit. The explicit employment contract specifies working hours, compensation, and job tasks. The implicit contract involves expectations about the extent to which the employment relationship is not just a payment for labor on the spot market but instead is likely to continue over time. The possibility of a longer-term commitment between an employer and its employees in turn has a number of implications: for example, whether firms will seek to avoid mass layoffs unless or until absolutely necessary; whether firms may cushion the wages and compensation …

Nutritional Immunomodulation As An Approach To Decreasing The Negative Effects Of Stress In Poultry Production, G. R. Huff, W. E. Huff, N. C. Rath Jan 2009

Nutritional Immunomodulation As An Approach To Decreasing The Negative Effects Of Stress In Poultry Production, G. R. Huff, W. E. Huff, N. C. Rath

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

Stress can lead to changes in the immune response resulting in both increased and decreased resistance to opportunistic bacterial pathogens. Growth-promoting antibiotics have been a major tool in modulating hostpathogen interactions and limiting clinical and subclinical bacterial infection in confined animal production. Regulatory pressures to limit antibiotic use in poultry production and recent international marketing agreements that prohibit treating poultry with antibiotics have limited the disease-fighting tools available to poultry and livestock producers, particularly in Europe. There is a need to evaluate potential antibiotic alternatives to improve both production and disease resistance in high-intensity food animal production. Nutritional approaches to …

The Gendered Nature Of Domestic Violence: Statistical Data For Lawyers Considering Equal Protection Analysis, Molly Dragiewicz, Yvonne F. Lindgren Jan 2009

The Gendered Nature Of Domestic Violence: Statistical Data For Lawyers Considering Equal Protection Analysis, Molly Dragiewicz, Yvonne F. Lindgren

Faculty Works

In Woods v. Horton, the California’s Third District Court of Appeal in Sacramento ruled that a state Health and Safety Code section funding domestic violence shelter services specifically for battered women and their children violated equal protection. Using the strict scrutiny standard of review, the court held that under the state’s Equal Protection Clause, women and men are “similarly situated” with regard to domestic violence and, therefore, the language in the code should be revised to make state funding for domestic violence shelter services under that code gender-neutral. Woods is the first successful legal decision for the anti-feminist “fathers’ rights” …

Pinpoint Redistricting And The Minimization Of Partisan Gerrymandering, Alex J. Whitman Jan 2009

Pinpoint Redistricting And The Minimization Of Partisan Gerrymandering, Alex J. Whitman

Emory Law Journal

For over twenty years, the political gerrymandering claim under the Equal Protection Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment has been mired in ambiguity because the Supreme Court and lower courts have failed to come up with a clear standard to determine whether a redistricting plan is unconstitutional. In 2006, however, a new phenomenon that this Comment terms ¿pinpoint redistricting¿ was used by Georgia¿s Republican-dominated state legislature to alter the boundaries of a small group of districts rather than all of the state¿s district boundaries, severely weakening the strength of Democratic voters in the affected districts. The pinpoint redistricting changed the affected …

Practice, Theory, And The War On Terror, Fred C. Zacharias Jan 2009

Practice, Theory, And The War On Terror, Fred C. Zacharias

Emory Law Journal

This Essay considers whether lawyers should offer legal advice that clients request and will pay for, even when giving that advice might facilitate wrongful behavior. As a vehicle for analyzing the issue, this Essay discusses memoranda written for the Administration of President George W. Bush by Deputy Assistant Attorney General John Yoo, who advised that the physically and psychologically abusive interrogation of enemy combatants in Afghanistan was, or might be, legally justifiable. This Essay is neither intended to critique or defend the legal analysis underlying the so-called ¿torture memos,¿ nor to serve as a referendum on Yoo¿s political views. Rather, …

Conversational Behaviors In Youth With High-Functioning Asd And Asperger Syndrome, Rhea Paul, Stephanie Miles Orlovski, Hillary Chuba Marcinko, Fred Volkmar Jan 2009

Conversational Behaviors In Youth With High-Functioning Asd And Asperger Syndrome, Rhea Paul, Stephanie Miles Orlovski, Hillary Chuba Marcinko, Fred Volkmar

Communication Disorders Faculty Publications

Twenty-nine youth with autism spectrum disorders and 26 with typical development between 12 and 18 years of age were engaged in structured interviews (ADOS). The interviews were videotaped and rated for atypical conversational behaviors by trained raters, using the Pragmatic Rating Scale (Landa et al. Psychol Med 22:245–254, 1992). The ASD group was divided into AS and HFA/PDD-NOS subgroups. Significant differences were found among groups on approximately one-third of the PRS items. These items involved primarily the management of topics and information, reciprocity, intonation, and gaze management. The only differences to reach significance between the AS and HFA/PDD-NOS group were …

Predicting Outcome In Acute Low Back Pain Using Different Models Of Patient Profiling, Benedict M. Wand, James H. Mcauley, Louise Marston, Lorraine H. De Souza Jan 2009

Predicting Outcome In Acute Low Back Pain Using Different Models Of Patient Profiling, Benedict M. Wand, James H. Mcauley, Louise Marston, Lorraine H. De Souza

Health Sciences Papers and Journal Articles

Study Design: Prospective observational study of prognostic indicators, utilising data from a randomised, controlled trial of physiotherapy care of acute low back pain (ALBP) with follow up at 6 weeks, 3 months and 6 months.

Objective: To evaluate which patient profile offers the most useful guide to long-term outcome in ALBP.

Summary of Background Data: The evidence used to inform prognostic decision-making is derived largely from studies where baseline data is used to predict future status. Clinicians often see patients on multiple occasions so may profile patients in a variety of ways. It is worth considering if better prognostic decisions …

Epistemical And Ethical Troubles In Achieving Reconciliation, And Then Beyond, Rory J. Conces Jan 2009

Epistemical And Ethical Troubles In Achieving Reconciliation, And Then Beyond, Rory J. Conces

Philosophy Faculty Publications

My optimism towards reconciliation in places like Bosnia and Kosovo has become increasingly guarded because of certain epistemical and ethical issues. Reconciliation presumes the making of moral judgments about a wrongdoing, judgments that are empirically informed. If the perceptual judgments that are used to do the informing are made suspect because of a lapse in the commonplace self-restraints (or controls) on reasoning or glitches in the regulative ideals or epistemic goods like understanding and intelligibility, then the moral judgments on which they are grounded become suspect as well. This happens to both fanatic and non-fanatic. In this article I explore …

An Assessment Of Sexual And Gender Based Violence In Wajir District, North Eastern Kenya, Gladys K. Mwangi, Guyo W. Jaldesa Jan 2009

An Assessment Of Sexual And Gender Based Violence In Wajir District, North Eastern Kenya, Gladys K. Mwangi, Guyo W. Jaldesa

Reproductive Health

A 2006 baseline survey conducted by CARE Kenya indicated that sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) is widespread throughout Kenya’s North Eastern Province. Other findings revealed that high levels of stigma and gender imbalances are associated with sexual violence and female genital mutilation (FGM) and that a coordinated approach to responding to the service needs of survivors is missing. As noted in this report, there is limited awareness of the legal mechanisms available to survivors. The Population Council’s study in Wajir District ascertained the need for and possible components of an integrated and comprehensive services model that could meet the needs …
