A Qualitative Study Of Coping With Unemployment, Mark Baddeley Jan 2009

A Qualitative Study Of Coping With Unemployment, Mark Baddeley

Master's Theses and Capstones

Unemployment is among the largest stressors of adult life. There are many factors that help determine how people cope with unemployment, and several models have been developed to provide schema for understanding the coping strategies people use. In this qualitative study, in-depth individual interviews yield rich detail of how men who have been highly successful in their careers cope with unemployment. The participants offer unique perspectives on their common experience. The concept of self-determinism provides a useful framework for understanding the coping behavior of the participants and for the absence of reported distress.

Self-Injury Behavior In Adolescents: An Education And Prevention Model, Leslie Desrosiers Jan 2009

Self-Injury Behavior In Adolescents: An Education And Prevention Model, Leslie Desrosiers

Master's Theses and Capstones

Many research studies have been focused on self-injury pertaining to adolescents in an in-patient community. There has been little research conducted on adolescents in normative populations that are engaging in self-injurious behavior which is on the rise. The importance of educating an entire community concerning self-injurious behavior is vital in order to help prevent this growing trend. Educators in our schools are not fully prepared to deal with self-injurers and how to help them through intervention and treatment. The need for a developed curriculum in the schools to educate the students, faculty, and staff is crucial in addressing the increasing …

Collective Forgiveness And The Unforgivable, Robert Woon Chul Fisher Jan 2009

Collective Forgiveness And The Unforgivable, Robert Woon Chul Fisher

Master's Theses and Capstones

Forgiveness is an intricate part of our everyday moral interactions, although it is fundamentally a difficult concept. Unforgivable crimes are inexcusable, and equally as difficult a concept, because the unforgivable often references collective crimes. This paper will provide an analysis of forgiveness, the unforgivable, and how both relate to collectives by distinguishing the crimes from their perpetrators. At a fundamental level, individual forgiveness can be expanded to allow for collective forgiveness, despite the inherent difficulties of such collective forgiveness. Similarly, unforgivable crimes can be expanded to accommodate collective injuries. To accommodate for the unforgivable, I distinguished an unforgivable act from …

Impact Of Media Exposure, Ethnicity And Body Mass Index On The Body Image Of College Women, Shannon Wong

Master's Theses and Capstones

The current thesis project sought to analyze the following three problems: (1) the relationship between media exposure and body image, (2) the relationship between body image and media exposure to determine if there are racial group differences, and (3) the relationship between body image, Body Mass Index and media exposure.

Eighty-one females participated in this study, recruited from two large public northeastern universities. The results of the study show a significant negative correlation between media exposure and measures of body image. There were no significant differences found between Caucasian and non-Caucasian women for media exposure. Based on the results, magazines …

The Homometrics Of Einterviews, Brian Winkenweder Jan 2009

The Homometrics Of Einterviews, Brian Winkenweder

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

Robert Morris treats the artist interview as a critical component of his studio practice. Morris conflates speaking and writing about his art by consenting only to interviews that are conducted through email, refusing to be recorded in a real-time, face-to-face dialogue. Throughout his career, Morris has published numerous theoretical essays, and it is not surprising that he would embrace email as a way to conduct an interview. Email signals a historic shift in the manner in which artists, critics and scholars communicate with one another. Therefore, we must examine the advantages and disadvantages of the eInterview. This paper asserts that …

Clients Aging Out Of Care, Dale Margolin Cecka

Law Faculty Publications

Youth aging out of foster care face an arduous road. Lawyers for foster youth must help to assure their safe and stable exit from the system and a comfortable transition into the next stage of their lives. Lawyers cannot rely on social service agencies and caseworkers to handle the myriad of issues that youth encounter, and many require court orders or other legal measures.

Our Day In Their Shadow: Critical Remembrance, Feminist Science And The Women Of The Manhattan Project, Lee-Anne Broadhead Jan 2009

Our Day In Their Shadow: Critical Remembrance, Feminist Science And The Women Of The Manhattan Project, Lee-Anne Broadhead

Peace and Conflict Studies

Inspired by the publication of a book celebrating the role of the women in the Manhattan Project, this paper seeks to demonstrate that such an effort – to the extent it accepts and endorses the historical, political and scientific legitimacy of the Project – is both misguided and dangerous. An alternative feminist critique is presented: one respecting the views of those scientists (men and women) who refused to participate or who have sought to challenge the reductionist Western scientific paradigm from which the Bomb emerged. Illumination of the repressive and hierarchal structures requisite for the “birth” of the nuclear age …

The Six University Consortium Student Mobility Project: Promoting Conflict Resolution In The North American Context, Pauline Tennent, Jessica Senehi, Michael Ross Fowler, Sean Byrne Jan 2009

The Six University Consortium Student Mobility Project: Promoting Conflict Resolution In The North American Context, Pauline Tennent, Jessica Senehi, Michael Ross Fowler, Sean Byrne

Peace and Conflict Studies

This article focuses on the North American Conflict Resolution Program - a twenty-first century mobility consortium in which universities in Canada, Mexico, and the United States exchanged students of conflict resolution. Drawing on student perceptions and, in particular, the experiences of the universities of Manitoba and Louisville, the authors discuss the positive outcomes of mobilizing students to study conflict resolution abroad for the students themselves, for faculty members involved, for university and other communities, and for the field of conflict analysis and resolution.

Money As Simulacrum: The Legal Nature And Reality Of Money, John J. Chung Jan 2009

Money As Simulacrum: The Legal Nature And Reality Of Money, John J. Chung

UC Law Business Journal

The title of this paper is a nod to Simulacra and Simulation by post-modernist philosopher Jean Baudrillard. This paper explores the meaning and nature of money, and the form in which money exists today. The author begins by asking such basic questions as "what is money" and explores the history and development of money. We live in a world of increasingly transient and stunning wealth, a world where billionaires are as common as millionaires once were, where fortunes are gained and lost overnight, and of inexplicable wealth inequality. The author contends that the current state exists because money is a …

Should Courts Hang On Every Word Of Congress's Hanging Paragraph - A Solution To Judicial Controversy Over Chapter 13 Surrendered Vehicles, Netta Grutman Jan 2009

Should Courts Hang On Every Word Of Congress's Hanging Paragraph - A Solution To Judicial Controversy Over Chapter 13 Surrendered Vehicles, Netta Grutman

UC Law Business Journal

As part of the Bankruptcy Abuse Prevention Consumer Protection Act of 2005, Congress added a paragraph to the Bankruptcy Code governing the confirmation of Chapter 13 plans. The paragraph was added in an effort to eliminate "cram down." Prior to 2005, cram down allowed the debtor to retain his/her vehicle as part of a bankruptcy plan and only repay the secured debt on the vehicle. After Congress's amendment, a debt on a vehicle retained as part of a Chapter 13 plan can no longer be bifurcated. Thus, a debtor must repay both the secured and unsecured debt in order to …

Power And The Rejection Of The Competent Attitudinal Deviant, William Stanton Jan 2009

Power And The Rejection Of The Competent Attitudinal Deviant, William Stanton

Honors Theses

This thesis describes an empirical investigation of the rejection of the deviant and operates under the hypothesis that a powerful leader will be more tolerant of those who disagree with him or her than would a low power leader. Before presenting the results of the study, this chapter will provide an overview of previous work on this topic. In the next few pages I will present a review of the available research concerning group reactions to deviancy, namely that groups reject deviants. Then, I will review available research concerning the psychological effects of power. By the end, this thesis will …

Adopting A New Approach To Medical Information For Adoptees, Jessica Marie Yoke Jan 2009

Adopting A New Approach To Medical Information For Adoptees, Jessica Marie Yoke

Richmond Journal of Law and the Public Interest

Some estimates indicate that at least six million adoptees lived in the United States in 1997. "After factoring in birth parents and adoptive parents for each adoptee, the number of persons directly affected by the adoption process grows to over [twenty-four million] persons." States conducted many of these adoptions privately, particularly those that did not occur recently, so the parties remain anonymous to one another. Thus, an enormous number of Americans are now struggling in a system built on antiquated law that is not very useful, and in fact might be harmful. This Comment proposes a solution to this overlooked …

Injury-In-Fact, Justice-In-Fiction: Toward A More Realistic Definition Of Injury In The Context Of Unenforced Criminal Laws, Jason R. Lafond Jan 2009

Injury-In-Fact, Justice-In-Fiction: Toward A More Realistic Definition Of Injury In The Context Of Unenforced Criminal Laws, Jason R. Lafond

Richmond Journal of Law and the Public Interest

This article argues that the "prosecution or the credible threat of prosecution" standard endorsed by the Supreme Court of the United States to analyze standing in challenges to criminal laws is too narrow. Part I seeks to counter the notion of unenforced criminal laws as "dead words" and "harmless empty shadows" by reviewing recent research from multiple disciplines, including psychology, sociology, and economics, which shows that unenforced laws have as strong an effect on individuals and society as prosecution or the threat of prosecution. Part II traces the history and rationale of the notion of standing and the requirement of …
