How And Why Hundreds Of Preventable Deaths Continue To Occur Behind America's Prison Walls And Jail Cells, Melody Monssen Apr 2026

How And Why Hundreds Of Preventable Deaths Continue To Occur Behind America's Prison Walls And Jail Cells, Melody Monssen

William & Mary Journal of Race, Gender, and Social Justice

This Note examines how the Prison Litigation Reform Act (PLRA) came to be and the consequences of its passage. The PLRA was largely a response to the growing movement of prisoners’ rights that began in the 1960s and continued until the 1990s. As the Court grew more conservative, the legal system became less receptive to prisoners’ plights. Consequently, PLRA was enacted in an effort to curtail prison litigation. Consequently, conditions in correctional institutions have continued to worsen, leaving prisoners with little recourse. Although the passage of PLRA was justified by claiming that prisoners were bringing frivolous lawsuits, the continued upward …

Neighborhood-scale environmental factors, including disinvestment in infrastructure, may impact cardiometabolic disease risk. To our knowledge, no prior studies have investigated the association between neighborhood disinvestment and incident diabetes. We used a virtual street audit of Google Street View Imagery to generate a neighborhood disinvestment score for participants' residential addresses in the Hispanic Community Health Study/Study of Latinos (HCHS/SOL). An item response theory model was fit to indicators (litter, graffiti, under-maintained buildings, bars on windows, and abandoned buildings) to form a scale measuring a latent level of disinvestment. Ordinary kriging was used to estimate levels for each residential address within the …

Proximal And Distal Factors Associated With Obesity In Childhood: An Exploratory Structural Equation Model., Joseph A. Skelton, Erinn T. Rhodes, Sarah Hampl, Ihuoma Eneli, Edward H. Ip, Sit Study Research Group

Manuscripts, Articles, Book Chapters and Other Papers

BACKGROUND: Obesity in childhood is complex; structural equation modeling (SEM) offers an approach to ascertain complicated relationships between weight and proximal (health behaviors, child health) and distal (family/household, community) variables. The objective of the study was to use SEM to map the influence of different etiological clusters on obesity in childhood.

METHODS: Secondary analysis of baseline data from patients and parents enrolled in a multi-site study of pediatric weight management was conducted. The primary outcome was weight status (utilizing percentage above the 95th percentile BMI, %95BMI). SEM was used to evaluate the influences of variables proximal and distal to child …

Journal of Dentomaxillofacial Science

Objective: Effective toothbrushing behaviors in school-aged children play an important role in preventing dental and oral health problems. At the age of 12, the behaviors constitute a critical phase in the formation of healthy lifestyle habits. Therefore, this study aimed to analyze the factors that influence toothbrushing behaviors in 12-year-old children based on the Health Belief Model (HBM) theory.

Material and Methods: A total of 92 12-year-old children were selected by cluster sampling method at elementary schools in Banyumas, Central Java. The independent variables included perceived susceptibility, severity, barrier, and benefit in accordance with HBM. The dependent variable comprised toothbrushing …

Examining The Well-Being And Ill-Being Correlates Of Prioritizing Positivity And Investigating Ses As A Moderator, Lahnna I. Catalino, William Tov, Madeline Q. Hoorn Apr 2026

Examining The Well-Being And Ill-Being Correlates Of Prioritizing Positivity And Investigating Ses As A Moderator, Lahnna I. Catalino, William Tov, Madeline Q. Hoorn

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

Prioritizing positivity is the tendency to use positive emotions as a key criterion to structure daily life. Research shows that prioritizing positivity is associated with better psychological health. However, none of this research was preregistered and prioritizing positivity’s links with ill-being remain understudied. In five preregistered studies (Sample A: n = 388, Sample B: n = 214, Sample C: n = 301, Sample D: n = 290, Sample E: n = 453), we found that prioritizing positivity was associated with more well-being (positive emotions, satisfaction, meaning), less ill-being (negative emotions, depressive symptoms, anxiety), and more hypomania, a mixed construct. We …

Thinktank-Me: A Multi-Expert Framework For Middle East Event Forecasting, Haoxuan Li, He Chang, Yunshan Ma, Yi Bin, Yang Yang, See-Kiong Ng, Tat-Seng Chua

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Event forecasting is inherently influenced by multifaceted considerations, including international relations, regional historical dynamics, and cultural contexts. However, existing LLM-based approaches employ single-model architectures that generate predictions along a singular explicit trajectory, constraining their ability to capture diverse geopolitical nuances across complex regional contexts. To address this limitation, we introduce ThinkTank-ME, a novel Think Tank framework for Middle East event forecasting that emulates collaborative expert analysis in real-world strategic decision-making. To facilitate expert specialization and rigorous evaluation, we construct POLECAT-FOR-ME, a Middle East–focused event forecasting benchmark. Experimental results demonstrate the superiority of multi-expert collaboration in handling complex temporal geopolitical forecasting …

A Novel Nudt16-Based Strategy For Producing Defined Phosphoribosylated Substrates To Study Nampt Antiviral Activity Against Hsv-1, Steph Nivaggioli Apr 2026

A Novel Nudt16-Based Strategy For Producing Defined Phosphoribosylated Substrates To Study Nampt Antiviral Activity Against Hsv-1, Steph Nivaggioli

Bioengineering Master's Theses

Herpes simplex virus (HSV) is a highly prevalent human pathogen whose symptoms are characterized by the formation of painful blisters and ulcers. There are two major families of HSV: HSV-1, primarily transmitted through oral contact, and HSV-2, predominantly spread through sexual contact. Periodic reactivation of the virus enables continued transmission and recurrent disease. Antiviral drugs that suppress viral replication are available to the public; however, no curative therapy exists.

Recent studies suggest that HSV reprograms host cellular metabolism to support its replication. Notably, this includes the manipulation of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD⁺) homeostasis. Under standard physiological conditions, NAD⁺ is consumed …

Trust: The Invisible Force Behind Effective Leadership During Times Of Change, Lindsay Atoro Apr 2026

Trust: The Invisible Force Behind Effective Leadership During Times Of Change, Lindsay Atoro

M.S. in Leadership

Workplace change is constant, yet most change management models focus on logistical, financial, and operational factors, overlooking the human aspects. Strategies to support employees often neglect the critical role of trust in effectiveness and success. To more deeply explore the role of trust, this study combined a comprehensive literature review with leader interviews to compare theoretical findings with real-world practices. Results revealed that while leaders acknowledged the importance of trust in leading teams through change, fewer than half explicitly identified it without prompting. Trust was consistently referenced, though often implicitly, reflecting a pattern in the literature where trust was acknowledged …

Exploring The Mental Health Experiences Of First-Time Parents: A Qualitative Study., Taylor Ryan Apr 2026

Exploring The Mental Health Experiences Of First-Time Parents: A Qualitative Study., Taylor Ryan

Doctor of Social Work Capstone Projects

While transitioning into parenthood, one in five mothers will experience Perinatal Mood and Anxiety Disorders (PMADs), and fathers are more likely to experience mental health disorders than their non-parenting counterparts. Although PMADs are experienced by many first-time parents, it is unclear if parents receive sufficient education on how to identify these symptoms and how to access the necessary resources. The current qualitative study explores the experiences of individuals who identify as first-time parents (N = 7) aged 25 to 34, with a child under 2 years old. Applied thematic analysis was used to identify themes related to first-time parents’ experiences …

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects

Background: Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a prevalent endocrine disorder affecting reproductive-age females, with symptoms often emerging in adolescence. Lifestyle modifications have been shown in evidence-based research trials to improve PCOS-related symptoms and patient quality of life, yet structured evaluation and education on comprehensive disease management is often lacking in specialty settings.

Objectives: The purpose of this Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) quality improvement project was to evaluate the impact of individualized lifestyle-focused nursing education on body image concerns, emotional well-being, health-related quality of life (HRQoL), and confidence in disease management among adolescent females diagnosed with or at risk for …

Antitrust, Vampires And Bloody Acquisitions, Theodosia Stavroulaki Apr 2026

Antitrust, Vampires And Bloody Acquisitions, Theodosia Stavroulaki

Fordham Law Review

Private equity has rapidly seized control of large swaths of the U.S. healthcare system. This Essay argues that its takeover is not a story of efficiency or innovation but one of extraction. Drawing on a substantial body of research, it shows that private equity acquisitions are associated with rising healthcare costs, inferior care, reduced access to essential services, and deteriorating working conditions for physicians and nurses—harms that fall most heavily on marginalized communities.

These outcomes are not accidental. They stem from the private equity business model, which relies on leveraged buyouts, aggressive cost cutting, and roll-up strategies designed to generate …

Peer Support In The Emergency Department: The Impact Of Mentorship On Nurses' Feelings Of Support And Role Satisfaction, Erin Lownsbery

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects

Background: Emergency department (ED) nurses experience high levels of burnout and turnover due to heavy assignments, boarding, and the physical and emotional demands of practice. The transition from student to practicing nurse in the ED is particularly challenging, with many new-to-practice nurses reporting decreased feelings of support following orientation.

Aims/Objectives: This DNP project aimed to plan, implement, and evaluate a peer mentorship program in the ED of a large, urban, academic Level I trauma center in the fall of 2025. The program’s impact on new-to-practice nurses’ feelings of support and role satisfaction, as well as overall participant satisfaction, was evaluated …

Catholicism, Islam, And Intersectional Feminism In Ireland And Morocco: A Fatima Mernissi And Sinead O’Connor Study, Tralee Pomerleau

All Theses And Dissertations

This research contends that the interpretation of the relationship between feminism and religion is rooted in the Western feminist framework, making it seem like they cannot work together. This framework does not look at feminism through an intersectional lens, which it needs to, so women can use their life experiences, culture, and religion to fight for equal rights for women from all over the world. Looking at feminism through an intersectional lens proves that there is a way to keep religion and faith while fighting for women’s equality in every aspect of life.

This paper outlines the broad relationship between …

The Vicious Cycle Of 'Disaster-Recovery-Disaster' And Sids: Lessons From The Icj Advisory Proceedings On Climate Change, Chhaya Bhardwaj

William & Mary Environmental Law and Policy Review

The core argument of this Article is that the current theoretical and legal frameworks are insufficient to fully comprehend the circumstances of the Small Islands Developing States (SIDS), which claim to be in a “constant state of recovery or disaster.” The SIDS continue to suffer, as the extreme climate events become more frequent, severe, and compounding. The existing theoretical and legal frameworks assume that every disaster that begins must end, as does the recovery period following the disaster. However, in the case of some SIDS, the disaster or recovery period never ends. For example, sometimes, another disaster strikes even before …

Social Murder, Marissa Jackson Sow Apr 2026

Social Murder, Marissa Jackson Sow

Washington and Lee Law Review

In recent years, variations on Engels’s concept of social murder have been adopted into British legal and sociological lexicons to conceptualize the state’s reckless sacrifices of its most vulnerable populations—people deemed socially undesirable, legally undeserving, and economically redundant. The state allows these populations to die a multitude of deaths by failing to protect them; notably, victims of social murder are relegated to society’s underclasses, if not completely excluded from the body politic, before they are physically eliminated. Social murder is neither genocide nor ethnic cleansing; instead, social murder captures the elimination of groups of people via atrocious events for which …

Arbitrary Consent To Arbitration, Charity J. Fort Apr 2026

Arbitrary Consent To Arbitration, Charity J. Fort

Washington and Lee Law Review

In the one-hundred-year period since the enactment of the Federal Arbitration Act of 1925 (the Act), arbitration in the U.S. has become a battlefield embroiled in a multitude of contract law doctrines and competing arbitration jurisprudence concerning what rights can be contracted away. This battlefield has become particularly grisly with regards to the increased use of arbitration clauses in contracts with adhesive qualities between business entities and consumers. This Article seeks to confront and lay the foundations for resolving a concern raised by many arbitration scholars: scholars who argue that the use of arbitration clauses in contracts of adhesion is …

Drug War Repair Guarantees, Amber Baylor Apr 2026

Drug War Repair Guarantees, Amber Baylor

Washington and Lee Law Review

Drug legalization, especially cannabis legalization, is a critical step forward in states’ willingness to address systemic disparities, privacy intrusions, violence, and other harms of the drug war. Yet, reforms center on legalization and repair through a narrow lens, focused on changes to the penal code. The public has found that narrow forms of legalization cannot serve their purported reparative purpose. Narrowly drawn legalization is illusory. Drug war harms and punishment for legalized substance use continue. Legalization reforms are vulnerable to political trends, resulting in rollback and retrenchment of drug war operations.

Legalization cannot deliver on its reparative terms without guarantees. …

Education As A Right, Homelessness As A Crisis: The Displaced Futures Of American Homeless Youth, Tina Pham Apr 2026

Education As A Right, Homelessness As A Crisis: The Displaced Futures Of American Homeless Youth, Tina Pham

Washington and Lee Law Review

Homelessness in the United States has been a humanitarian crisis affecting youth as one of its most vulnerable populations. Education is one of the few opportunities to break through this cycle of poverty. Recognizing the gap in education for homeless students and other students, Congress enacted the McKinney-Vento Act, which guarantees homeless youth educational rights to access public education. Following the Supreme Court’s decision in Grants Pass v. Johnson, however, the rise of criminalizing policies, such as encampment sweeps and anticamping ordinances, threatens the success of the Act. These policies not only destabilize families, but they also leave homeless youth …

In The Eyes Of Empires: Depictions Of Ancient Illyria, Maeve Quinlan Miller Apr 2026

In The Eyes Of Empires: Depictions Of Ancient Illyria, Maeve Quinlan Miller

History & Classics Undergraduate Theses

Illyria, called Illyricum under Roman governance, was an area in the ancient Mediterranean which extended across the eastern coast of the Adriatic Sea. Situated north of Greece, west of Macedon, and across the ocean from Rome, Illyria occupied a critical place in the world, and yet it remains underdiscussed in scholarship. The sources that have survived into the modern era come from non-Illyrian voices, like Livy from Rome, Polybius, a Greek historian, or Arrian, who took great lengths to record the campaigns of Alexander the Great. Without affiliation or deep understanding of Illyrian ways, places like Rome, Greece, and Macedon …
