Optical Properties Of Semiconducting Boron Carbide For Neutron Detection Applications, Ravi B. Billa
Optical Properties Of Semiconducting Boron Carbide For Neutron Detection Applications, Ravi B. Billa
Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Solid state neutron detection devices based on semiconducting boron carbide have the potential for nearly ideal neutron detection effciency for thermal neutrons. The present work is focused on characterizing optical properties of this semiconducting boron carbide material as a step in further development of the material for neutron detection and other applications.
Semiconducting boron carbide films were grown on silicon substrates using plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition and their optical properties were characterized using variable angle spectroscopic ellipsometry over a wide spectral range, from mid-infrared to vacuum-ultraviolet wavelengths. The effects of deposition substrate temperature and of post-deposition heat treatments on …

Slow Isoinertial Cervical Strength Training Does Not Alter Dynamic Stabilization Of The Head And Neck During A Standard Football Tackle, Peter J. Lisman
Slow Isoinertial Cervical Strength Training Does Not Alter Dynamic Stabilization Of The Head And Neck During A Standard Football Tackle, Peter J. Lisman
Open Access Dissertations
The sternocleidomastoid (SCM) and upper trapezius (UT) muscles are the primary dynamic stabilizers of the head and neck and likely attenuate head acceleration with direct and indirect impacts. Increasing the strength of the SCM and UT through cervical resistance training has been recommended to prevent concussions in football players. The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of an eight-week isoinertial cervical resistance training program on SCM and UT muscle activity (EMG) and kinematic responses of the head and neck during a standard football tackle in college-aged males. Sixteen college-aged males (21.6 ± 2.8 y, 94.6 ± 13.3 …
A Pedagogical And Educational Examination Of The First Month At The Piano By Mana-Zucca, Laura Helene Keith
A Pedagogical And Educational Examination Of The First Month At The Piano By Mana-Zucca, Laura Helene Keith
Open Access Dissertations
The First Month at the Piano by Mana-Zucca, published in 1935, is a pioneering piano method to be taught by rote, supporting sound before sight learning theories, to the pre-school student. It differs from the Suzuki method in that The First Month at the Piano uses short, repetitive patterns, intrinsic to the Edwin Gordon Music Learning Theory. The First Month at the Piano has been compared to educational theories and has been found to follow Lev Vygotsky's theory of scaffolding and Jerome Bruner's principles of structure, readiness for learning, and motivation. The First Month at the Piano has been shown …
Functional Deficits In Motor Terminals And Their Mitochondria In Mouse Models Of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, Khanh Tu Nguyen
Functional Deficits In Motor Terminals And Their Mitochondria In Mouse Models Of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, Khanh Tu Nguyen
Open Access Dissertations
Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a neurodegenerative disease in which the upper and lower motor neurons die. Most studies aimed at elucidating the cause of this disease have focused on the motor neuron cell body. However, recent work has suggested that the disease may begin in motor nerve terminals. The experiments described in Chapters 2-4 of this dissertation studied functional defects in motor nerve terminals of mice expressing mutant human superoxide dismutase 1 (SOD1-G93A, SOD1-G85R), models of familial ALS. In Chapter 2, the proximal hind limbs of SOD1-G93A mice were subjected to varying durations of a tourniquet-induced ischemia/reperfusion injury to …

Mean-Field Solution Of The Mixed Spin-1 And Spin-5/2ising System With Different Single-Ion Anisotropies, Fuad. T. Ibrahim
Baghdad Science Journal
The mixed-spin ferrimagnetic Ising system consists of two-dimensional sublattices A and B with spin values S_A=-1 and S_B=5/2 respectively .By used the mean-field approximation MFA of Ising model to find magnetism(m_B, m_A). In order to determined the best stabile magnetism , Gibbs free energy employ a variational method based on the Bogoliubov inequality. The ground-state (Phase diagram) structure of our system can easily be determined at T=0 , we find six phases with different spins values depend on the effect of a single-ion anisotropies D_B, D_A .these lead to determined the second , first orders transition ,and the tricritical points …

Study Of The Porosity Of Certain Pharmaceutical Tablets Using Mercury Intrusion Porosimeter, Sura Kh. Ibrahim
Baghdad Science Journal
Porosity and pore structure are important characteristics of pharmaceutical tablets, since they influence the physical properties, such as mechanical strength, density and disintegration time. This paper is an attempt to investigate the pore structure of four different paracetamol tablets based on mercury porosimetry. The intrusion volumes of mercury were used to calculate the pore diameter, pore volume and pore size distribution. The result obtained indicate that the variation of the pore volume in the tablets followed the sequence:- S.D.I. Iraq> Pharmacare,Dubai-U.A.E.> Bron and Burk(UK) London>Lark Laboratories(India), while the variation of surface area followed the sequence:- S.D.I. Iraq> Lark Laboratories(India) …

Skateboard Park Participation: A Means-End Analysis, Marni Goldenberg, Wynn Shooter
Skateboard Park Participation: A Means-End Analysis, Marni Goldenberg, Wynn Shooter
Journal of Youth Development
Skateboarding has become a highly visible and popular activity. However, many negative stereotypes remain associated with the activity and its participants (Jones & Graves, 2000). In contrast to the negative stereotypes, skateboarding seems to provide many individuals, and youth in particular, with an important outlet for physical activity, leisure, and personal development. The purpose of this study was to investigate why skateboarders chose to visit skateboard parks, to identify outcomes of participating in skateboarding at skateboard parks, and to identify the underlying values that guide skateboarders’ choice of this specific setting. The conceptual framework for the reported study was provided …
Temporal Awareness And Rhythmic Performance, Daniel J. Colombo
Temporal Awareness And Rhythmic Performance, Daniel J. Colombo
Theses
The objective of this research was to study the conditions under which rhythmic behavior arises and its effects on task performance and mental workload. It has been demonstrated that temporal awareness (TA) in dynamic systems draws on high-level mental resources and contributes to superior performance on some task elements but not others. Elsewhere it has been demonstrated that TA in environments with high predictability can lead to superior task performance and reduced mental workload. This research sought to examine the behavior and subsequent performance that arises under highly predictable vs. dynamic conditions. Using a computer-based time-sharing task, we analyzed task …
