The Depiction Of Female Models In Sport Television Commercials In The United States By Degree Of Slenderness: An Appraisal, Robin T. Peterson, Bing Xu, Yam Limbu Dec 2009

The Depiction Of Female Models In Sport Television Commercials In The United States By Degree Of Slenderness: An Appraisal, Robin T. Peterson, Bing Xu, Yam Limbu

Department of Marketing Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

This manuscript narrates the results of an examination of the portrayal of the degree of slenderness of female models in sport marketing television commercials in the United States. A visual content analysis was employed to gather and to interpret the data. In turn, the analysis revealed that the commercials utilized substantial numbers of models who were inordinately slender, depicted these models more favorably than they did heavier models, and presented them in a fashion that pointed to superior social status and hierarchy positions.

Analyzing Spatial Patterns In Reefscape Ecology Via Remote Sensing, Benthic Habitat Mapping, And Morphometrics, Shanna K. Dunn Dec 2009

Analyzing Spatial Patterns In Reefscape Ecology Via Remote Sensing, Benthic Habitat Mapping, And Morphometrics, Shanna K. Dunn

HCNSO Student Theses and Dissertations

A growing number of scientists are investigating applications of landscape ecology principles to marine studies, yet few coral reef scientists have examined spatial patterns across entire reefscapes with a holistic ecosystem-based view. This study was an effort to better understand reefscape ecology by quantitatively assessing spatial structures and habitat arrangements using remote sensing and geographic information systems (GIS).

Quantifying recurring patterns in reef systems has implications for improving the efficiency of mapping efforts and lowering costs associated with collecting field data and acquiring satellite imagery. If a representative example of a reef is mapped with high accuracy, the data derived …

Effectiveness Of Fiscal Management Tactics Used At Public Two-Year Colleges, Muriel Elaine Novak Dec 2009

Effectiveness Of Fiscal Management Tactics Used At Public Two-Year Colleges, Muriel Elaine Novak

Student Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of fiscal management tactics public two-year chief financial officers (CFO) selected in the FY 2006-2007 budget cycle to meet budget goals. This study solicited specific effective fiscal management tactics used by two-year public colleges in FY 2006-2007. CFOs or their designee, were asked to rate the effectiveness of the tactics in executing their 2006-2007 budget. The public community college members of the American Association of Community Colleges were polled using web-based service Hosted Survey to conduct the survey. The response of 321 returned surveys meant a return rate to the …

Lake Salt: A Creative Thesis, Erica Lindsay Plummer

Theses and Dissertations

This collection of short stories explores the different ways in which women experience suffering. The narrative focuses on the daily lives of women who have undergone some type of heartbreak. While the stories occasionally include the incident which leads to despair, the collection is more concerned with the way women function after a personal tragedy. The stories show the grace of people who continue to move forward when their lives are filled with suffering. Sexuality enters the stories and exposes both the triumph and destructive nature of sexuality. A critical introduction which explains how complication and beauty amplify story proceeds …

An Adaptive Bayesian Approach To Dose-Response Modeling, Thomas J. Leininger Dec 2009

An Adaptive Bayesian Approach To Dose-Response Modeling, Thomas J. Leininger

Theses and Dissertations

Clinical drug trials are costly and time-consuming. Bayesian methods alleviate the inefficiencies in the testing process while providing user-friendly probabilistic inference and predictions from the sampled posterior distributions, saving resources, time, and money. We propose a dynamic linear model to estimate the mean response at each dose level, borrowing strength across dose levels. Our model permits nonmonotonicity of the dose-response relationship, facilitating precise modeling of a wider array of dose-response relationships (including the possibility of toxicity). In addition, we incorporate an adaptive approach to the design of the clinical trial, which allows for interim decisions and assignment to doses based …

Faculty Publications

Precise calibration of kilometer-scale interferometric gravitational wave detectors is crucial for source localization and waveform reconstruction. A technique that uses the radiation pressure of a power-modulated auxiliary laser to induce calibrated displacements of one of the ∼10 kg arm cavity mirrors, a so-called photon calibrator, has been demonstrated previously and has recently been implemented on the LIGO detectors. In this paper, we discuss the inherent precision and accuracy of the LIGO photon calibrators and several improvements that have been developed to reduce the estimated voice coil actuator calibration uncertainties to less than 2% (1σ). These improvements include accounting for rotation-induced …
