We present a new class of quantum neural networks (QNNs) whose states are solutions of p -adic Schrödinger equations with a non-local potential that controls the interaction between the neurons. These equations are obtained as Wick rotations of the state equations of p -adic cellular neural networks (CNNs). The p -adic CNNs arise as continuous limits of large discrete hierarchical neural networks (NNs). The CNNs are bio-inspired by the Wilson–Cowan model, which describes the macroscopic dynamics of large populations of neurons. We provide a detailed study of the discretization of the new p -adic Schrödinger equations, which allows the construction …

BACKGROUND: The caregiver burden among parents of children with chronic kidney disease (CKD) is high and can impair their life participation, which may in turn have negative consequences on their children's care and outcomes. We aim to describe effects on life participation in parents of children with CKD, from the perspectives of their children, health professionals, and the parents themselves.
METHODS: We thematically analyzed data from the Standardized Outcomes in Nephrology-Children and Adolescents Initiative (SONG-Kids) life participation workshops involving children with childhood CKD, parents or caregivers, and health professionals, for content related to perspectives on life participation among parents of …
Machine Learning Local Potentials For Accelerated Electron-Phonon Interactions Calculations Within The Projector Augmented-Wave Framework, Yi Xia
Mechanical and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations
Electron–phonon interactions govern carrier dynamics, transport, and many optical and quantum phenomena in solids, but finite-displacement calculations within the projector augmented-wave (PAW) framework require up to 6N self-consistent supercell calculations for an N-atom system, making them costly for large, low-symmetry, and disordered materials. We introduce MLLocP, a machine learning (ML) strategy that learns the self-consistent local potential (LocP) on real-space grids and supplies its displacement derivatives to the evaluation of all-electron PAW electron–phonon matrix elements. Analysis of the PAW decomposition identifies the local-potential contribution as a natural target for machine learning, while the remaining PAW quantities are retained within the …
Behind The Peacock Throne: Rethinking Imperial Ethnicity In The Mughal Empire, Torre Nordgren
Behind The Peacock Throne: Rethinking Imperial Ethnicity In The Mughal Empire, Torre Nordgren
Armstrong Undergraduate Journal of History
The Mughal Empire was one of the most ethnically diverse early modern states to have ever ruled, containing an array of states that are currently at the center of a geopolitical tug of war today. This brings forth the two main questions of how the Mughal Empire effectively administered their domains, and to what extent are signs of an early ethnic conflict present in the Empire? Utilizing an imperial framework with Anatoly Iseanko’s model to observe translated primary sources, a swath of rich secondary sources, and Mughal art; the early stages of an ethnic conflict reveals a rift between Hindu …
German Jewish Integration And The Illusion Of Permanence, 1781–1933, Matthew M. Larian
German Jewish Integration And The Illusion Of Permanence, 1781–1933, Matthew M. Larian
Armstrong Undergraduate Journal of History
This paper argues that German Jewish integration from the late eighteenth century through the Weimar Republic was a genuinely successful project, and it was that success itself, not failure of foresight, that left the community unprepared for the Nazi rupture. The paper reframes the standard question: instead of asking why German Jews failed to predict Nazism, it asks how the success of integration itself narrowed the imagination of what was possible.

Interpreting The Mystery Of The Edmund Fitzgerald: A Reexamination Of Maritime Documentation, Phillip C. Brady
Armstrong Undergraduate Journal of History
The sinking of the SS Edmund Fitzgerald on November 10th, 1975 remains one of the most mysterious and highly debated shipwrecks in the history of the Great Lakes. The most probable of the three reasons, hatch failure, compromising seas, or shoaling, can be concluded through a thorough analysis of prominent sources paired with new research gathered from the receptivity of each conclusion to the average person.
A Finite Element Model For Thermomechanical Stress-Strain Fields In Transversely Isotropic Strain-Limiting Materials, Saugata Ghosh, Dambaru Bhatta, S. M. Mallikarjunaiah
A Finite Element Model For Thermomechanical Stress-Strain Fields In Transversely Isotropic Strain-Limiting Materials, Saugata Ghosh, Dambaru Bhatta, S. M. Mallikarjunaiah
School of Mathematical & Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications
This paper presents a comprehensive computational framework for investigating thermo-elastic fracture in transversely isotropic materials, where classical linear elasticity fails to predict physically realistic behavior near stress concentrations. We address the challenge of unphysical strain singularities at crack tips by employing a strain-limiting theory of elasticity. This theory is characterized by an algebraically nonlinear constitutive relationship between stress and strain, which intrinsically enforces a limit on the norm of the strain tensor. This approach allows the development of very large stresses, as expected near a crack tip, while ensuring that the corresponding strains remain physically bounded. A loosely coupled system …

Automated feedback is increasingly used to support programming instruction, yet little is known about how such tools influence students' self-efficacy development. This study examines how prior programming experience and initial confidence shape self-efficacy gains among first-year engineering students using an automated code critiquer for formative feedback. Pre- and post-intervention surveys were collected from 380 students enrolled in an introductory MATLAB programming course, employing two validated instruments: the Computer Programming Self-Efficacy Scale (CPSES) and the Longitudinal Assessment of Engineering Self-Efficacy (LAESE). Students with prior programming experience demonstrated significantly greater gains in both CPSES and LAESE than novices, although distinctions among basic, …

Semiconductor Supply Chain Risk Monitoring And Forecasting: A Hybrid Big Data Architecture And Empirical Validation, Ming Gong, Sangwhan Cha
Harrisburg University Other Works
Global semiconductor manufacturing networks are characterized by deep geographical concentration, high capital intensity, and acute vulnerability to regional supply disruptions. While public merchandise trade statistics provide transparent, reproducible empirical records, transforming these raw macroeconomic streams into actionable supply chain risk intelligence requires both rigorous analytical framing and scalable computational architecture. In this paper, we propose an enterprise-grade cloud data architecture designed for semiconductor risk monitoring, combining scheduled distributed batch processing on Google Cloud (Dataproc/PySpark, BigQuery) with an event-driven streaming ingestion lane (Pub/Sub, Dataflow/Apache Beam). To rigorously evaluate the underlying scoring and forecasting logic without premature distributed deployment costs, we implement …

Commercial and institutional buildings account for roughly one-third of global energy demand and nearly 37% of energy-related greenhouse gas emissions. While modern smart facilities deploy dense Internet of Things (IoT) sensor meshes to monitor power draw and environmental conditions, transforming continuous, heterogeneous streams into reliable analytical intelligence requires rigorous data engineering and precise semantic modeling. In this paper, we formulate, implement, and critically audit an end-to-end cloud pipeline deployed on Google Cloud Platform (GCP). The architecture adapts the Lambda design pattern, separating bulk historical ingestion from an asynchronous real-time streaming lane (Pub/Sub, Eventarc, 2nd-generation Cloud Functions) with an explicit dead-letter …

Beyond The Mountain: Rethinking Decolonization In Quisqueya Through Complementarity Of Haiti And The Dominican Republic, Mihailo Vučetić
Armstrong Undergraduate Journal of History
By moving beyond familiar binaries, French/Spanish, Black/white, colony/nation, the paper challenges comparative frameworks that isolate Haiti and the Dominican Republic. Drawing on Achille Mbembe’s genealogical approach to decolonization, Frantz Fanon’s account of liberation as violent and world-making, and Mary Louise Pratt’s “contact zones,” it traces how colonial divergence and revolution produced not two isolated national stories but a shared terrain of forced unifications, mutual influence, and contested memory.

Developing The North: The Matachewan Region Mines And Northern Development In Ontario, 1916-1954, Simon Baer
Armstrong Undergraduate Journal of History
This article examines northern Ontario’s Matachewan mining district as a case study in the environmental consequences of twentieth‑century northern development. Centering on the Young‑Davidson and Matachewan Consolidated gold mines, it traces how provincial policies, low taxation, and permissive claim laws encouraged a rapid extension of Ontario’s extractive economy into the Canadian Shield. By juxtaposing the interwar political economy of “opening the North” with the long‑term impacts on land, water, and fish populations, the article argues that Ontario’s eagerness to promote northern mining produced a regime of de facto deregulation whose environmental costs only became fully visible decades after the initial …

Soil is a repository for historical accounts of power, dispossession, and cultural continuity. This paper proposes the development of “reparative soil science,” a new paradigm that combines soil remediation with theories of environmental justice, decolonization, and multi-knowledge systems. We define it as an orientation within soil science that treats the discipline’s own concepts, classifications, and survey conventions as historical products, and that couples the biophysical repair of degraded soils with repair of the rights, relations, and forms of knowledge that colonial land regimes displaced. By analyzing examples from around the world, the paper shows how colonialism and postcolonial land governance …

Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is a methodology for the evaluation of the (relative) potential environmental impacts of a product system throughout its life cycle. It is standardised under the ISO14040 and ISO14044 series. When conducted rigorously, LCA provides a quantitative framework for comparing environmental impact and can challenge or substantiate common assumptions regarding environmental performance of the system. However, it is essential that any reported results are read in combination with the defined goal and scope, as the choice of the system boundary and/or the allocation of burdens and other methodological choices can influence the outcome presented. This review will …

Inequities In Agency And Post-Surrogacy Impact On Surrogate Mothers In India, Sheela Suryanarayanan Dr., Sudarshan Saravanan Mr.
Dignity: A Journal of Analysis of Exploitation and Violence
India became a global hub for commercial surrogacy because surrogate mothers had fewer rights over their own bodies and the child born, and had no agency in medical interventions during surrogacy, until the Surrogacy (Regulation) Act, 2021 prohibited transnational and commercial surrogacy in India. Studies have found detrimental physical and emotional health impacts of surrogacy on surrogate mothers in several developing countries. Economic coercion limits the agency and bargaining capacity of surrogate mothers, leading to unjust surrogacy contracts. Mandatory retention at surrogate homes, separation from family, surveillance, social stigma, secrecy, and a disconnect from the intended parents and surrogacy children …

Parents and peers play an important role in adolescents' body image and embodiment. Messages girls receive about sex and puberty during these formative years can contribute to either positive embodiment or disrupted/disconnected embodiment. To better understand how these messages are constructed in adolescence, we conducted a comparative thematic analysis of self-reported, retrospective accounts of messages conveyed by parents and peers. We administered an online survey using Prolific, which included open-text questions that we analyzed for this study. Participants were 339 cisgender women aged 19 to 29 (M = 24.4, SD = 2.84). Participants identified as Asian/Pacific Islander (23.0%), Black (22.4%), …

Quality Reveals What Quantity Conceals: Deceptive Equity Patterns In Urban Green Space Distribution, Zheng Xian, Yoshiharu Suzuki, Kun Liu, Clive E. Sabel, Naoki Nakaya, Atsushi Hozawa, Tomoki Nakaya
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences
Equitable provision of urban green space depends on how green space exposure is measured, yet aggregate, quantity-focused metrics can mask disparities in quality. We introduce the concept of deceptive equity, in which apparent distributional fairness conceals substantive inequality, and test it across 344 postcode areas in Sendai, Japan. Across three dimensions — ecological (NDVI), perceptual (Green View Index) and service provision (accessible park count) — we paired a quantity indicator with a quality indicator. A quantity–quality divergence emerged in every dimension: wherever a quality indicator showed a significant socioeconomic gradient it favoured affluent areas, whereas the corresponding quantity indicators were …

Background: Childhood adversity is multi-layered, extending beyond the family to include broader neighbourhood and health contexts. We aimed to investigate how these multiple layers of childhood adversity relate to the risk of death in young adulthood. Methods: Children were followed from birth into young adulthood (16–42 years) using nationwide register data on multi-layered childhood adversity and mortality. Individual adversity included perinatal adversity (preterm or small-for-gestational-age) and mental and physical health-service use. Family adversity included five distinct groups using group-based multi-trajectory modelling based on 12 adversities. Neighbourhood adversity included material deprivation in small-area geographical zones. We evaluated associations of these layers …

Glomalin-Related Soil Protein In Colluvial Soils As A Proxy For Reconstructing Millenary Changes In Landscape And Soil Health, Axel Werner, Lourdes López-Merino, Joeri Kaal, Cruz Ferro-Vázquez, Oscar Serrano
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Glomalin-related soil protein (GRSP) is an operationally defined soil organic matter pool that includes a heat shock protein linked to arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) living in symbiosis with most vascular plants and plays a key role in soil health. However, the potential of GRSP as a palaeoecological proxy remains unexplored. We analysed the GRSP content in a North-western Iberian colluvial soil profile encompassing the last 14,000 years. We aimed to 1) identify whether GRSP is preserved, and 2) investigate whether GRSP could be used as a palaeoecological proxy after comparing its record with palynological and pedoanthracological records that account for …

This article describes the collaboration between faculty at two international
universities, one in France and one in the U.S., who partnered their students to practice and assess oral skills. Using computer-mediated communication with both synchronous and asynchronous elements, the collaboration provided a valuable opportunity for both groups to engage in pedagogically meaningful and structured exchanges integrated into coursework that mirror their future professional situations (O’Dowd et. al., 2020). More specifically, each semester, the U.S. TESOL students interview and assess French speaking English language learners using the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) and the Situation Task Action Results (STAR) interview …
Making The Implicit Explicit For Multilingual Learners: A Language-Based Framework For Literacy Development, Luciana C. De Oliveira
Making The Implicit Explicit For Multilingual Learners: A Language-Based Framework For Literacy Development, Luciana C. De Oliveira
Journal of English Learner Education
Literacy is fundamentally an act of meaning-making that requires bridging micro-level linguistic choices with macro-level text structures across genres. Current literacy policies dominated by Science of Reading (SoR) mandates often overemphasize isolated, word-level foundational skills. This narrow focus creates a one-size-fits-all model that reduces reading to the level of individual words, not appropriate for multilingual learners (MLs) who require access to dense, specialized disciplinary discourse. This article proposes an intentional, language-based literacy framework designed to build high-challenge, high-support classrooms for MLs without lowering academic expectations. Integrating genre-based pedagogy through the Teaching and Learning Cycle (TLC) with the mode continuum, the …

Race, Embodiment, And Professionalism: A Critical Intersectional Analysis Of Brazilian Sign Language Interpreting, Roberto César Reis Da Costa, Sheila Santos
Journal of Interpretation
This paper investigates the intersections of race, corporate professionalism, and somatic regulation within Brazilian Sign Language (Libras) translation and interpretation. While traditional translation scholarship prioritizes linguistic neutrality, this study employs an interdisciplinary critical methodology combining Critical Race Theory (CRT), Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA), and Translation and Interpreting Studies (TIS) to deconstruct how standard professional aesthetics inadvertently sustain systemic racism and Eurocentric cultural erasure. Utilizing a textual deconstruction of Article 5 of the National Libras Code of Ethics alongside an autoethnographic mapping of workplace visual ergonomics, we examine how racialized aesthetic expectations regulate and pathologize cultural markers such as braided hairstyles, …
