Torah, Tradition, And Trina: Analysis And Development Of Trina In William Finn's Falsettos From A Faith-Based Perspective, Margaret-Ellen Jeffreys Jan 2009

Torah, Tradition, And Trina: Analysis And Development Of Trina In William Finn's Falsettos From A Faith-Based Perspective, Margaret-Ellen Jeffreys

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

When an actor approaches a character, s/he examines many facets of the play-the setting, the time period, the politics surrounding both of the former. S/he also looks into elements of the character-any noted physical attributes in the text, his/her financial and social status, what s/he wants and what obstacles are standing in his/her way. Often the last thing that the actor studies is the character's spiritual and/or religious life. When I was cast as Trina in UCF's production of Falsettos in the winter of 2005, I knew I wanted to approach the character from an oft-neglected area: her faith. Judaism …

The Removal And Recovery Of Oxo-Anions From Aqueous Systems Using Nano-Porous Silica Polyamine Composites, Varadharajan Kailasam

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Environmental contamination due to anthropogenic wastewater discharges containing high concentrations of toxic metals is omnipresent in the environment. Heavy metal ions from manufacturing sources can compromise the integrity of various ecological cycles as well as negatively impacting the health of humans through drinking water and the food chain. Increased levels of well known poisonous metals such as arsenic, selenium, lead and mercury are frequently detected in aqueous wastes. Arsenic and selenium are highly toxic elements to human health and the environment. The Maximum Contaminant Level (MCL) for both these toxic metals continue to become more and more stringent. Although there …

Does Microcredit Facilitate Socioeconomic Development?, Arundhati Pal Jan 2009

Does Microcredit Facilitate Socioeconomic Development?, Arundhati Pal

Pepperdine Policy Review

In order to assess the effectiveness of microcredit on socioeconomic development, one must evaluate current microcredit loans and practices. The question that must be asked is to what extent are socioeconomic opportunities expanded through supplemental income from microcredit loans? To answer this question, measurable indicators that display characteristics of socioeconomic development need to be utilized. The following indicators are often used in impact assessments as representative of such development: investment in higher education, socioeconomic empowerment of women, access and utilization of health services, and prioritization of savings and investment. This paper will identify the observed deficiencies of the aforementioned indicators …

Animal Vegetable Mineral, Eva Lys Champagne Jan 2009

Animal Vegetable Mineral, Eva Lys Champagne

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

There is a radical unity supporting the vast diversity of appearances in nature that makes distinct categorizations like “animal, vegetable or mineral” superficial at best. The unifying element has been called energy, or, as Emerson put it, “thought is the common origin.” This guiding principle, a life spent by the sea, and an enduring fascination with nature’s forms, has resulted in my current body of work. By combining formal references to animals, vegetables and minerals I create intentionally ambiguous ceramic sculptures that seem to exist in the fluid margin between categories. My aim is toward something composite that challenges the …

The Lived Experience Of Hiv-Positive Tanzanian Orphans, Carol A. Parker Jan 2009

The Lived Experience Of Hiv-Positive Tanzanian Orphans, Carol A. Parker

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

The purpose of this investigation was to generate a context- specific model of the lived experience of HIV positive Tanzanian orphans. With the advent of anti-retroviral drugs, Sub-Saharan African populations with high burdens of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) face annually accumulating increases in the number of HIV positive children, and ultimately adults. Perinatally infected, these children often become orphans while still young. Extended interviews were performed with a purposive sample of 12 HIV infected orphaned children between 9 and 12 years of age. Half of the research participants lived in an orphanage and half were children living with guardians in …

Comment On Intellectual Property, Concentration And The Limits Of Antitrust In The Biotech Seed Industry, F. Scott Kieff

GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works

This comment was filed with the Department of Justice Antitrust Division on December 31, 2009, as "Comments Regarding Agriculture and Antitrust Enforcement Issues in Our 21st Century Economy" in response to the DOJ/USDA request for public comments for the agencies' joint workshops on antitrust issues in the agricultural sector.

Regarding firm size and integration, it must be kept in mind that the agriculture industry in the U.S. has, for good reasons, moved beyond the historic, pastoral image of small family farms operating in quiet isolation, devoid of big business and modern technologies. The genetic traits that give modern seeds their …

The Tracking Of Dietary Intakes Of Children And Adolescents In Sweden Over Six Years: The European Youth Heart Study, Emma Patterson, Julia Wärnberg Julia Wärnberg, John Kearney, Michael Sjostrom Jan 2009

The Tracking Of Dietary Intakes Of Children And Adolescents In Sweden Over Six Years: The European Youth Heart Study, Emma Patterson, Julia Wärnberg Julia Wärnberg, John Kearney, Michael Sjostrom

Articles

The stability of dietary habits through various life-stages is not well understood. A better understanding of the tracking of diet over time could have implications for health promotion as well as for the planning of nutritional epidemiology studies. We examined the stability of dietary intakes of children and adolescents over six years. As part of the European Youth Heart Study, in 1998-9, a 24-h dietary recall was performed on over one thousand 9- and 15-year-olds in Sweden. In 2004-5, 40% returned to the follow-up study. These 452 subjects (273 15- and 179 21-year-olds) were assigned to age- and gender-specific tertiles …

Editorial: Nutrition Research Reviews, Katherine Younger Jan 2009

Editorial: Nutrition Research Reviews, Katherine Younger

Articles

Cognitive performance in children and whether this can be improved by nutritional means is an area of investigation fraught with experimental challenges, making it difficult to draw useful conclusions. Hoyland et al. (1) have here provided a much-needed systematic review of the evidence on the specific question of the effects of breakfast on children’s cognitive performance and, unsurprisingly, have concluded that the effects are generally positive, most clearly shown for memory and attention tasks and most easily demonstrated in nutritionally vulnerable children. However, the benefits of food before schoolwork are not necessarily purely, or even mostly, physiological; they could be …

The Influence Of Socioeconomic And Environmental Determinants On Health And Obesity: A West Virginia Case Study, Anura Amarasinghe, Gerard D'Souza, Cheryl Brown, Hyungna Oh, Tatiana Borisova Jan 2009

The Influence Of Socioeconomic And Environmental Determinants On Health And Obesity: A West Virginia Case Study, Anura Amarasinghe, Gerard D'Souza, Cheryl Brown, Hyungna Oh, Tatiana Borisova

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

A recursive system of ordered self assessed health together with BRFSS data were used to investigate health and obesity in the Appalachian state of West Virginia. Implications of unobserved heterogeneity and endogeneity of lifestyle outcomes on health were investigated. Obesity was found to be an endogenous lifestyle outcome associated with impaired health status. Risk of obesity is found to increase at a decreasing rate with per capita income and age. Intervention measures which stimulate human capital development, diet-disease knowledge and careful land use planning may improve health and obesity outcomes in Appalachia in particular and rural America in general.

The Subprime Mortgage Crisis: Effects On Women And Minorities, Shakitha Paquita Harden

Honors Theses

This paper briefly describes how the subprime mortgage crisis emerged. General observations are made concerning the effect of the crisis on the economy as a whole, but the focal point explains how women and minorities have been affected. To illustrate this point, areas of investigation include predatory and discriminatory lending. Furthermore, this document provides data illustrating the financial impact the subprime mortgage crisis has had on different minority groups compared to non-minority groups. The data that has been gathered for this paper comes from examining previous academic journals and results, researching various internet sources, and attending panel discussions held on …
