Pregnant/Lactating ewes: Fifteen pregnant Dorset sheep were supplemented with vitamin E (30 IU d-α-tocopherol /Kg body weight (BW), E, n=l0) or placebo (emulsified base, P, n=5) from the last trimester of gestation through weaning. Blood and colostrum were analyzed every 2 wk for α-tocopherol, selenium, glutathione peroxidase activity, lysozyme activity, total IgG and IgG antibodies against tetanus toxoid. 2.) Lambs (0-8wks): Lambs born to …
The Effects Of Aging On Muscle Loss And Nuclear Factor Kappa-B Levels In Rats Fed A Diet Containing Suboptimal Leucine Levels, Corinne Rose Kohlen
The Effects Of Aging On Muscle Loss And Nuclear Factor Kappa-B Levels In Rats Fed A Diet Containing Suboptimal Leucine Levels, Corinne Rose Kohlen
Master's Theses
Loss of muscle due to aging is often associated with significant detrimental effects. Therefore, it is crucial to understand signaling molecules that may trigger the muscle loss or prevent the process. The transcription factor, Nuclear Factor Kappa-B (NF-κB), is associated with both catabolic and anabolic pathways of muscle metabolism and may be involved in age-related muscle loss. Leucine is an essential amino acid that is required for both protein synthesis and intracellular signaling pathways that regulate protein synthesis and degradation. The current study examined muscle NF-kB levels in male Sprague-Dawley rats, aged 6 (adult) and 21 months (old) fed a …
New Nurse Residency - An Evidence Based Approach, Alice M. Nied
New Nurse Residency - An Evidence Based Approach, Alice M. Nied
UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Nurse educators believe that their graduates are well-prepared for entry level positions in nursing. In the acute healthcare setting, new graduates are placed on virtually every type of nursing unit, including critical care. Employers have developed formal orientations to familiarize new graduate nurses new with the institution and its policies and procedures and to teach the things employers believe new RNs need to know but do not, either because they were never taught the material or they have not retained it.
The purposes of this project were to (a) examine the evidence relative to a disconnect between nursing education and …

Selective Herbivory By The Woodrat (Neotoma Lepida) On Joshua Trees (Yucca Brevifolia), M P. Stanford, Nancy J. Huntly
Biology Faculty Publications
We studied herbivory by the desert woodrat (Neotoma lepida) on Joshua trees (Yucca brevifolia) in the Mojave Desert to determine whether N. lepida fed selectively based on leaf nitrogen content. We measured leaf nitrogen content and the location and amount of herbivory by woodrats on Y. brevifolia trees in southwestern Utah, USA. Neotoma lepida removed the outer tips of leaves (1/3 to 2/3 of total leaf length) but left leaf bases, which had lower nitrogen content, uneaten. Herbivory by N. lepida also was concentrated on rosettes that were oriented south, and these had significantly higher nitrogen content than rosettes that …

The Chemical Ecology Of Antarctic Sponges, Kevin J. Peters
The Chemical Ecology Of Antarctic Sponges, Kevin J. Peters
All ETDs from UAB
Sponges were collected from shallow waters along the western Antarctic Peninsula near Palmer Station on Anvers Island. The majority (78%) of the sponges were found to have outer tissues defended against the omnivorous, Antarctic sea star Odontaster validus. Of the species that had outer tissues defended, 62% of them also had internal tissues that inhibited feeding by O. validus. Lipophilic or hydrophilic extracts coated on artificial food pellets were found to be unpalatable for all of the sponge species tested. These data provide evidence that defenses are common survival strategies in sessile macroinvertebrates from Antarctica but that the allocation of …
Occupational Stress, Dietary Self-Efficacy, Eating Habits And Body Composition In Police Officers, Rebecca Witten Grizzle
Occupational Stress, Dietary Self-Efficacy, Eating Habits And Body Composition In Police Officers, Rebecca Witten Grizzle
All ETDs from UAB
Obesity is a paramount public health threat in the U.S. as approximately twothirds of the adult population is overweight. Police officers have an even higher prevalence of overweight and obesity and other cardiovascular risk factors. Police officers often attribute their above average cardiovascular disease risk to shift work, jobrelated stress, and poor dietary habits while working. Occupational stress is a major concern among police officers. Therefore, it is important to understand the relationships among occupational stress, obesity, and diet habits. However, few research studies have characterized these relationships in police officers. The specific aims of this study were to determine …

A System Genetics Analysis Of Energy Metabolism Traits In Drosophila Melanogaster, Patricia Paola Jumbo-Lucioni
All ETDs from UAB
Obesity is emerging as a global public health problem and it has shown to precede and predict the development of type 2 diabetes, a complex disease that has also reached epidemic proportions in the US and worldwide. Despite that obesity-related traits are highly heritable, the genetic basis underlying their natural variation and the loci playing pleiotropic roles among organismal traits have not been fully elucidated. The overall goals of these present studies were: to shed light on the architecture of the genetic co-expression networks regulating variations in obesity-related traits, elucidate the extent to which they are regulated by pleiotropic loci, …

Multiple Imputation To Correct For Measurement Error In Admixture Estimates In Genetic Structured Association Testing, Miguel A. Padilla, Jamin Divers, Laura K. Vaughan, David B. Allison, Hemant K. Tiwari
Psychology Faculty Publications
Objectives: Structured association tests ( SAT), like any statistical model, assumes that all variables are measured without error. Measurement error can bias parameter estimates and confound residual variance in linear models. It has been shown that admixture estimates can be contaminated with measurement error causing SAT models to suffer from the same afflictions. Multiple imputation (MI) is presented as a viable tool for correcting measurement error problems in SAT linear models with emphasis on correcting measurement error contaminated admixture estimates. Methods: Several MI methods are presented and compared, via simulation, in terms of controlling Type I error rates for both …

Evolution And Diagnostic Potential Of Major Surface Proteases From Trypanosoma Vivax, T.Brucei Brucei And T.Congolense, Eunice M. Machuka
All Master’s Theses
Tsetse-transmitted trypanosomiasis is a disease unique to Africa, affecting both humans and animals. This disease occurs in about 10 million km2 in 37 sub-Saharan countries corresponding approximately to one-third of Africa's total land area, and threatens an estimated 50 million people and 48 million cattle. The estimated annual losses in cattle production alone are in the range of 1.0-1.2 billion dollars. The diagnosis of trypanosomiasis is notoriously difficult as there are no specific clinical signs and the intermittent and usually low parasitaemia make detection of the difficult. The trypanosomes are infamous for their ability to evade the immune responses by …
Analysis Of Chemical Composition Of Cowpea Floral Volatiles And Nectar, Consolata Atieno Ager
Analysis Of Chemical Composition Of Cowpea Floral Volatiles And Nectar, Consolata Atieno Ager
All Master’s Theses
Cowpea is one of the 14 species of grain legumes. It rewards insects by producing nectar and it advertises to the pollinators by producing floral volatiles. The volatiles act as cues that guide insect pollinators in terms of pollen and nectar. Floral volatile quality also influences the efficiency of pollination. Genetic manipulations involving selection of varieties with high quality floral volatiles and nectar can therefore increase pollination efficiency and hence cowpea yields. It is believed that efficiency of insect pollination in several food crops is dependent on the quality of floral volatiles. Several molecules, including allozyme, co-dominant and isozyme DNA …

Fatty Acid Profiles Of Microdiets For Marine Fish In Turkey, Mustafa Yildiz
Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
Lipid contents and fatty acid profiles in the commercial microdiets for farming marine fish species were determined. Twenty microdiet samples were taken from marine fish farms on the Aegean region of Turkey throughout 2006-2007. Of the 20 microdiet samples, 5 were produced in Turkey and 15 were imported. The fatty acid analysis of the microdiets was made by gas-liquid chromatography using helium as the carrier gas. The lipid levels of the microdiets produced in Turkey by different companies ranged from 9.5 ± 0.05% to 11.6 ± 0.14% (P < 0.05). In contrast, the lipid levels of imported microdiets were between 10.6 ± 0.20% and 17.2 ± 0.14% (P < 0.05). n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (n-3 PUFA) levels in the microdiets ranged from 7.1 ± 0.03% to 24.8 ± 0.03% of total fatty acids (P < 0.05). Similarly, n-3 highly unsaturated fatty acid (n-3 HUFA) levels in the microdiets ranged from 6.1 ± 0.01% to 22.8 ± 0.02% of total fatty acids (P < 0.05). n-3 highly unsaturated fatty acids (n-3 HUFA) levels in the microdiets were found between 0.6 ± 0.00% and 3.6 ± 0.01% of dry weight of diets (P < 0.05). Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) levels of these microdiets were between 0.3 ± 0.00% and 2.0 ± 0.03% of the dry weight of diets (P < 0.05). Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) levels in the dry weight of diets were between 0.3 ± 0.01% and 2.2 ± 0.01% (P < 0.05). Arachidonic acid (ArA) levels in the microdiets were also found between 0.3 ± 0.01% and 0.9 ± 0.01% of total fatty acids (P < 0.05). The value of DHA/EPA ratios in the microdiets ranged from 0.5 ± 0.01 to 2.0 ± 0.01 (P > 0.05). The results showed that the total lipid or n-3 and n-6 …

Role Of Thyroid Hormone In The Intestinal Development Of Eleutherodactylus Coqui, Srikanth Singamsetty
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Thyroid hormone (TH) is required for the metamorphosis of the long, coiled tadpole gut in Xenopus laevis into a shorter mature adult gut. Eleutherodactylus coqui, a direct developing frog, lacks a tadpole. Its embryonic gut is a miniature adult form with a mass of yolky endodermal cells attached to the small intestine to provide nutrition. The requirement of TH for the gut development in E. coqui was tested in this study. Inhibition of TH synthesis with methimazole arrested gut development in its embryonic form. T3, the active form of TH, induced gut development. Embryos treated with methimazole failed to utilize …
