Neuroscience And Health Law: An Integrative Approach?, Stacey A. Tovino Jan 2009

Neuroscience And Health Law: An Integrative Approach?, Stacey A. Tovino

Faculty Articles

Clinicians and scientists use functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to map sensory, motor, and cognitive function and to study the neural correlates of a range of physical and mental conditions, behaviors, characteristics, and preferences. Due to its move outside the clinical and research contexts, fMRI raises a number of ethical, legal, and social issues that are being examined within the overlapping fields of neuroethics and neurolaw. The early neuroethics and neurolaw scholarship focused heavily on the implications of fMRI for evidence law, criminal law, criminal procedure, and constitutional law. Little attention has been paid, however, to the implications of advances …

Effect Of Estrus Synchronization With A Single Injection Of Prostaglandin During Natural Service Mating, Daniel Larson, Jacqueline A. Musgrave, Richard N. Funston

Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports

Records from unsynchronized cows (n = 2073; 60-day breeding season) were compared with records from synchronized cows (n = 517; 45-day breeding season) collected between 2000 and 2006. A single injection of prostaglandin F2α was administered approximately 108 hours after bull turn-in to synchronize estrus in spring calving mature beef cows. Estrus synchronization increased the percentage of cows calving in the first 21 days without affecting pregnancy rates. However, weaning BW of calves was not significantly different. Estrus synchronization improves synchrony of calving in a shorter breeding season with similar overall pregnancy rates.

Sulfur In Distillers Grains, Sarah Vanness, Terry J. Klopfenstein, Galen E. Erickson, Kip Karges

Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports

Data were compiled from 4,143 cattle on byproduct feeding experiments. Incidence of polioencephalomalacia was small (0.14%) in diets containing 0.46% or less sulfur (S). Incidences of polioencephalomalacia increased when cattle were fed diets above 0.46% S and especially above 0.56%. Phosphoric acid successfully replaced sulfuric acid in ethanol fermentation, but the amount and cost of phosphoric acid likely limit the economic feasibility of its use.

The Role Of Litigation In Combating Obesity Among Poor Urban Minority Youth: A Critical Analysis Of Pelman V. Mcdonald's Corp., Ashley B. Antler Jan 2009

The Role Of Litigation In Combating Obesity Among Poor Urban Minority Youth: A Critical Analysis Of Pelman V. Mcdonald's Corp., Ashley B. Antler

Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights & Social Justice

The note argues that litigation, particularly when focused on low-income urban minority youth, could serve as a strategic tool to address childhood obesity by reframing the issue and catalyzing policy and industry change. It critiques the Pelman v. McDonald's Corp. lawsuit for failing to address the socioeconomic and racial disparities underlying obesity rates, thereby missing an opportunity to advance meaningful solutions. The analysis suggests that public health litigation, when strategically framed, can complement broader advocacy efforts and push for environmental changes to combat the obesity epidemic.

Phytoplankton and benthic microalgae (BMA) may both contribute to the sediment organic matter pool available to benthic consumers. Recent studies have highlighted the presence and ecological roles of benthic microalgae (BMA) on the continental shelf but studies from the north-central Gulf of Mexico are limited. Here we use photosynthetic pigment analysis and microscopic examination of sediment microalgae to investigate how the biomass, composition, and degradation state of sediment-associated microalgae varies along the Louisiana inner shelf across a continuum of water column and sediment conditions. The contribution of microalgae to higher trophic levels was also examined. Three sandy shoals and surrounding …

Biogenesis Of Iron-Sulfur Clusters And Intracellular Iron Metabolism, Jacob Philip Bitoun Jan 2009

Biogenesis Of Iron-Sulfur Clusters And Intracellular Iron Metabolism, Jacob Philip Bitoun

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Iron-sulfur ([Fe-S]) clusters represent one of natures most diverse and ubiquitous protein prosthetic groups. [Fe-S] proteins are integral for diverse biological processes. Reconstitution of apo-proteins can occur by exogenously adding excess iron and sulfide. However, due to the toxicity of iron and sulfide, it is most likely that proteins coordinate [Fe-S] cluster assembly in cells. The first part of this dissertation addressed the iron donor for [Fe-S] cluster assembly. Recently, it has been shown that IscA is capable of binding iron with an association constant of 3.0 x 1019M-1. In addition, iron-loaded IscA is capable of …

Evaluation Of Pectin Methylesterase And Lactobacillus Spp. Isolated From Tabasco Peppers (Capsicum Frutescens L.), Sonja Tanee Jones

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

One of the major concerns of the hot sauce manufacturers is separation of sediments and layering of the sauce. Separation is an undesirable production condition because consumers view this as a defect which consequently increases manufacturing costs. Pectins play an important role in pepper processing since it forms gels and influences the final viscosity of the sauce. Hence, its integrity during processing influences the quality of the final product. Failures in pectin stability can sometimes be related to the presence of enzymes. Understanding how the pectin enzymes function during fermentation of pepper sauce is a necessary step in controlling the …

Manuscripts, Articles, Book Chapters and Other Papers

BACKGROUND: Angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors are known to improve clinical outcome and ventricular function in adults with heart failure. Infants with single-ventricle physiology show abnormalities in ventricular function as well as poor growth. The ability of an ACE inhibitor to preserve ventricular function and improve growth in these infants is unknown.

METHODS: The Pediatric Heart Network designed a randomized, double-blind trial to compare outcomes in infants with single-ventricle physiology receiving enalapril or placebo. Neonates < or =45 days old were eligible. The primary outcome is weight-for-age Z-score at 14 months of age. Secondary outcomes include other measures of somatic growth, laboratory and functional measures of heart failure, developmental indices, measures of ventricular size and function, and the relationship of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system genotype to the response to enalapril. The incidence and spectrum of adverse events will also be compared between treatment groups.

RESULTS: A total of 1,245 neonates were screened and 533 (43%) were eligible. The consent rate was 43%; 230 subjects were enrolled. Parental reluctance to …

Dose Titration Of Sericea Lespedeza Leaf Meal On Haemonchus Contortus Infection In Crossbred Lambs, Dana Alicia Pollard Jan 2009

Dose Titration Of Sericea Lespedeza Leaf Meal On Haemonchus Contortus Infection In Crossbred Lambs, Dana Alicia Pollard

LSU Master's Theses

Gastrointestinal nematode (GIN) parasitism is a problem for small ruminant producers. Haemonchus contortus is the most detrimental because of substantial economic losses. Over the past decades, chemical anthelmintics have been used to control GINs. Recently, GINs have developed resistance to most anthelmintics, and now reliance on anthelmintics is not possible. Alternative control methods are needed. Also, the use of fewer chemicals in agricultural products has called for alternative methods to be less synthetic and more organic. One promising alternative method is the feeding of condensed tannin (CT) containing forages as either fresh forage or dried products such as hay, ground …

Hearing Assessment Of Forest Loggers, Antonio A. Fonseca Jan 2009

Hearing Assessment Of Forest Loggers, Antonio A. Fonseca

LSU Master's Theses

Forest logging is the process in which trees are cut down for forest management and/or timber harvest. According to OSHA, logging is the most dangerous occupation in the United States. It consistently represents one of the most hazardous industries, with a fatality rate more than 21 times higher than the rate for all workers in the United States. Yet, little research has been performed to determine the long term effect of noise on forest loggers. OSHA regulations state that the maximum permissible hearing in an 8 hour shift should not exceed 90 dB. Occupational noise exposure is recognized as a …

Collpas As Activity Hotspots For Frugivorous Bats (Stenodermatinae) In The Peruvian Amazon: Underlying Mechanisms And Conservation Implications, Adriana Bravo Ordonez

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

In western Amazonia, large numbers of frugivorous bats regularly visit natural forest clearings known locally as collpas (also called clay licks or mineral licks). Bats arrive at collpas to drink water that has accumulated in depressions created by larger mammals that consume soil. Although collpa visitation by bats appears relatively common in western Amazonia, little is known about its causes and its ecological implications. In this dissertation I describe general and seasonal patterns of collpa visitation by frugivorous bats in the Peruvian Amazon, and I investigate potential explanations for this unique behavior. Regardless of season, collpas seem to be activity …
