Comparisons Of Physicochemical Properties Of Watermelon Juice Treated With Pulsed Electric Fields And Thermal Pasteurization, Lauren Nicole Cook
Comparisons Of Physicochemical Properties Of Watermelon Juice Treated With Pulsed Electric Fields And Thermal Pasteurization, Lauren Nicole Cook
LSU Master's Theses
Pulsed electric field (PEF) treatment is a non-thermal and alternative pasteurization treatment for fruit juices. PEF applies short pulses of electricity to a liquid food sample which inactivates microorganisms and enzymes. Thermal pasteurization is commonly used to pasteurize juice in the fruit juice industry but the process tends to deteriorate color, nutrients, and overall juice appearance. The overall goal of this study was to determine the effects of PEF treatment (30 kv/cm for 57 ìs in bipolar 2 ìs pulses at 22°C) on color, lycopene content, vitamin C content, pH, °Brix, and microbial count when compared with the effects of …

Categorization And Indentification Of Mechanisms Of Sugarcane Resistance To The Sugarcane Aphid (Hemiptera: Aphididae), Waseem Akbar
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Sugarcane in Louisiana is colonized and sometimes heavily infested by two aphid species, the sugarcane aphid, Melanaphis sacchari (Zehntner), and the yellow sugarcane aphid,Sipha flava(Forbes). Melanaphis sacchari, the main vector of sugarcane yellow leaf virus, is distributed throughout Louisiana’s sugarcane-growing regions. Five cultivars representing 90% of the commercial acreage in Louisiana (LCP 85-384, HoCP 91-555, Ho 95-988, HoCP 96-540,L 97-128) were evaluated for resistance to aphids in the greenhouse. Antibiosis was the primary category of resistance to both aphid species. Based on the intrinsic rate of natural increase, L 97-128 and HoCP 91-555 were comparatively susceptible and resistant cultivars, respectively. …
Insights Into The Streptomycete Conjugation Mechanism And Interstrain Inhibitor Production By The Sweet Potato Pathogen Streptomyces Ipomoeae, Jing Wang
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Conjugation in Streptomyces invokes a unique mechanism involving few plasmid-encoded loci. Transfer of circular plasmid pIJ101 requires only a tra gene, and a cis-acting locus clt. Here, I investigated whether the transfer genes of pIJ101 could promote transfer of a linear plasmid. While pIJ101 Tra could transfer circularized versions of the linear plasmid containing clt, the linear plasmid itself could not be transferred efficiently by Tra. All plasmids isolated from transconjugants appeared to be circular regardless of the configuration of the plasmid in the initial donor cells. However the linear plasmid could be transferred in linear form from JW1, which …

LSU Master's Theses
Torpedograss (Panicum repens L. Beauv.) is a common weed problem along the Gulf Coast in highly managed turf. Non-selective herbicides are currently used to control torpedograss within centipedegrass [Eremochloa ophiuroides (Munro) Hack.] and St. Augustinegrass [Stenotaphrum secundatam (Walt.) Kuntze], but turfgrass injury can be extensive. Research was conducted to evaluate torpedograss and centipedegrass response to the application of the selective, post-emergence herbicides quinclorac, sethoxydim, and clethodim. Quinclorac applied at 0.42 kg ai ha-1 three times 4 wks apart reduced torpedograss to 25% coverage (55% of control) 10 weeks after initial treatment (WAIT), but re-establishment was rapid and by 16 WAIT …

Soy isoflavones distribution in soy cotelydon, coat and germ were determined. The ƒÀ-Glucoside form of isoflavones was the major class of isoflavones in all three soy parts. Soy germ was the richest source of the isoflavones among the three soybean parts. Distribution of the isoflavones in soy cotyledon was different from that in soy coat or germ. As defatted soy flour is a main byproduct in the soy oil refining process, utilizing the low value byproduct as a valuable food antioxidant was investigated in this study. The level of isoflavones in the defatted soy flour extract was 55 mg/g, which …
Using Demographic Models To Manage Chinese Privet (Ligustrum Sinense Lour.), Metha Martine Klock
Using Demographic Models To Manage Chinese Privet (Ligustrum Sinense Lour.), Metha Martine Klock
LSU Master's Theses
Colonization of natural areas by Chinese privet (Ligustrum sinense Lour.) threatens biodiversity and preservation of native habitat in the southeastern United States. High rates of seed production and dispersal, coupled with clonal growth, result in a competitive advantage when introduced to novel areas. Land managers have attempted to control L. sinense through prolonged flooding, prescribed fire, and herbicide application with little success. I determined presence of L. sinense invasion in four sites in Louisiana and assessed key reproductive, growth, and survivorship characteristics defining its life course. I used vegetation surveys, germination trials, dendrochronology, and demographic models to elucidate stages in …

This may be sending a message to adolescents that unhealthy nutrition maintains …
Comorbid Psychopathology In Individuals With Autism Spectrum Disorders And Intellectual Disabilities, Santino Vincent Lovullo
Comorbid Psychopathology In Individuals With Autism Spectrum Disorders And Intellectual Disabilities, Santino Vincent Lovullo
LSU Master's Theses
While there has been an abundance of research investigating Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) in children, very little emphasis has been placed on ASD in adults, especially in regards to comorbid psychopathology. This is of great concern considering that ASD often co-occurs with intellectual disability (ID), and that both may serve as risk factors for additional psychopathology. While instruments exist that measure comorbid psychopathology in adults with ID, these scales are not targeted to the unique expression of comorbidity in adults with ID and ASD. The Autism Spectrum Disorders-Comorbidity for Adults (ASD-CA) was devised for this reason. This paper begins with …
Can Overeating Induce A Conditioned Taste Avoidance In Previously Restricted Rats?, Amanda Louise Hertel
Can Overeating Induce A Conditioned Taste Avoidance In Previously Restricted Rats?, Amanda Louise Hertel
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
While feeding is rewarding, the feeling of satiation has been theorized to be aversive under certain conditions. Using a food-restriction model of overeating developed in our laboratory the results presented here suggest that overeating, and the resulting experience of satiation, is capable of supporting a conditioned taste avoidance.
Rats had either ad lib (n=8) or restricted (n=24) food access (receiving 50% of the food eaten by ad lib fed rats) for 8 days. All rats were then given 24 hr access to a 0.1% saccharin solution, and two groups of food-restricted rats were given access to either 100% of the …

Preterm Infants With Gastroesophageal Reflux Disorder: An Intervention Handbook For Paretns [I.E. Parents], Melissa Cramer
Occupational Therapy Capstones
One of the problems that health care workers practicing in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) face is providing care that is individualized to each infant and his/her family, being supportive to the infant during their development and to parental roles, and being sensitive to the needs of each infant and his/her parents and family (Lawhon, 2002). There is an additional challenge when the infant is also diagnosed with gastroesophageal reflux (GERD). Parents are often the primary caregivers and advocates for their infant in the NICU; for this reason, it is important that they understand and take part in their …

Inservice For Individuals Working Or Caring For People With Low Vision, Tara Lee, Haylee Volesky
Occupational Therapy Capstones
Throughout the United States, low vision affects more than 3 million Americans 40 years of age and older (Rosenberg & Sperazza, 2008). As the population continues to age, more individuals will be moving to some form of either assisted living care or long-term care, which will increase the number of individuals with visual impairment living in such situations and requiring appropriate services. An individual with low vision typically has a decreased ability to function in daily life with a considerable impact upon functional decline in performance (Haymes, Johnston, & Heyes, 2002; Horowitz, 1994). Difficulties occur in everyday activities such as …
The Impact Of Early Childhood Education Upon The Black-White Achievement Gap, Linda Zane
The Impact Of Early Childhood Education Upon The Black-White Achievement Gap, Linda Zane
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
It can be argued that the current Black-White achievement gap provides evidence for a long-standing history of racial inequity within American society, as well as an informative barometer of progress toward educational parity. By all accounts, the measurements registered by this barometer continue to be cause for alarm. The disturbing Black-White achievement gap has been shown to be present in both mathematics and reading at every grade studied, from grades one through twelve (Jacobson, Olsen, Rice, Sweetland, & Ralph, 2001).
Many solutions have been put forth in an effort to reduce or eliminate this gap, but the findings of this …
