Profits, Supply And Hyv Adoption In Bangladesh, S Rahman, B Shankar Feb 2009

Profits, Supply And Hyv Adoption In Bangladesh, S Rahman, B Shankar

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

The adoption of HYVs (High Yielding Varieties), for increased farm profitability, and the accelerated supply of cereals are important objectives for Bangladesh agriculture. In this paper, we have investigated the manner in which price and non-price factor affect these three criteria, based upon a model of rational variety choice. The model is empirically implemented using translog profit functions and a switching regression framework, and applied to a cross-sectional farm-level dataset of Bangladeshi farms for the 1996 crop year. Results indicate that rice prices, land availability, irrigation, rural infrastructure, labour wages and prices of animal power services are important factors, while …

Studies On The Impact Of Altitudinal Gradient On Ammonium Assimilatory Metabolism In Glycine Max L. (Fabaceae), C. Rajasekaran, T. Kalaivani, R. Jayakumararaj, Abhijeet Singh, V. R. Pusalkar, R. Marimuthu Feb 2009

Studies On The Impact Of Altitudinal Gradient On Ammonium Assimilatory Metabolism In Glycine Max L. (Fabaceae), C. Rajasekaran, T. Kalaivani, R. Jayakumararaj, Abhijeet Singh, V. R. Pusalkar, R. Marimuthu

Ethnobotanical Leaflets

Seedlings of Glycine max L. were grown, transplanted and acclimatized for 60 days at different altitudes (250, 400 and 1600 m). Response to shift in altitude was observed in the plants. Shoot length decreased with the increase in the altitude, while root length followed a reverse trend. Biomass accumulation in shoot and roots of G. max was the maximum at high altitude. Total soluble protein content was significantly high at low altitude in the shoot and the roots. Free tissue ammonia level in this species showed positive correlation with increasing altitude. Ammonium assimilatory enzymes viz., glutamine synthetase (GS), glutamate synthase …

Target Selection And Annotation For The Structural Genomics Of The Amidohydrolase And Enolase Superfamilies, Xiaojing Zheng, Mark R. Chance Feb 2009

Target Selection And Annotation For The Structural Genomics Of The Amidohydrolase And Enolase Superfamilies, Xiaojing Zheng, Mark R. Chance

Faculty Scholarship

To study the substrate specificity of enzymes, we use the amidohydrolase and enolase superfamilies as model systems; members of these superfamilies share a common TIM barrel fold and catalyze a wide range of chemical reactions. Here, we describe a collaboration between the Enzyme Specificity Consortium (ENSPEC) and the New York SGX Research Center for Structural Genomics (NYSGXRC) that aims to maximize the structural coverage of the amidohydrolase and enolase superfamilies. Using sequence- and structure-based protein comparisons, we first selected 535 target proteins from a variety of genomes for high-throughput structure determination by X-ray crystallography; 63 of these targets were not …

Vegetation, Environmental Characteristics, And Their Relationships: Variation Within The Annually Flooded Riparian Zones Of The John Day River Basin, Oregon, Samuel J. Hartsfield Feb 2009

Vegetation, Environmental Characteristics, And Their Relationships: Variation Within The Annually Flooded Riparian Zones Of The John Day River Basin, Oregon, Samuel J. Hartsfield

Dissertations and Theses

I hypothesized that vegetation and physical environmental characteristics would differ between the upper and lower extents of the annually flooded riparian zone on the John Day River, and that relationships between species and environmental variables would display differences between these two zones. Vegetation, environmental variables, and relationships between them were assessed for the entire annually flooded riparian zone, and for the proposed upper and lower zones. Data were collected from 60 one-square-meter quadrats: 30 in each the upper and lower zones. Sites were randomly selected and located so that flood duration was roughly equal at all sites within each zone. …
