Exploring How Factors Impact The Activities And Participation Of Persons With Disability: Constructing A Model Through Grounded Theory, Joy Wee, Margo Paterson

The Qualitative Report

This paper explores a conceptualization of how factors impact activities of daily living (ADL) and participation from the perspective of persons with disability. This study identified what, and how, factors perceived by participants affect their daily activities, to better inform reporting of scores obtained on measures of ADLs and participation such as the Barthel Index and the Participation Scale. Grounded theory methodology was used to conceptualize a model, employing semi-structured interviews guided by categories of the above measures. Eight themes emerged from 24 participants, resulting in conceptualization of the successful adaptation model, which demonstrates relationships amongst factors, activities, and participation. …

Wellness Characteristics And Health Risk Behaviors Of Young Adult University Students, Nicole Mareno Phd Mar 2009

Wellness Characteristics And Health Risk Behaviors Of Young Adult University Students, Nicole Mareno Phd

Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to examine wellness and health risk behaviors of young adults at a university in the southwest. Nutrition, physical activity, alcohol use, and safe sexual practices are high priority health concerns on college campuses. Health promotion is integral to nursing. Early identification of risky health behaviors allows for the design of campus health interventions. Health behaviors continue to be formed during college and interventions may have a lasting impact on health promotion and disease prevention. This study added to the research on demographic factors impacting wellness. A correlation between BMI and wellness level was also …

The Reality Of The Agricultural Sector In Iraq And Challenges Facing The Future, Abdulrazzaq Majeed Al-Dubaissi Mar 2009

The Reality Of The Agricultural Sector In Iraq And Challenges Facing The Future, Abdulrazzaq Majeed Al-Dubaissi

Journal of Economics and Administrative Sciences

For over half a century, Iraqi society has endeavored to reinvest tens of billions of dollars in oil revenues into the agricultural sector and its infrastructure, including the construction of dams, water reservoirs, land reclamation, and livestock and plant production projects, reaching capacities that nearly met or exceeded the domestic demand for food and industrial raw materials. However, rapid population growth alongside rising oil-driven income levels has shifted domestic demand, necessitating a continuous developmental trajectory for the agricultural sector. Consequently, this research examines the developments within both the plant and livestock branches over recent years and their ability to sustain …

Birth Weight, Math And Reading Achievement Growth: A Multilevel Between-Sibling, Between-Families Approach, Bridget J. Goosby, Jacob Cheadle Mar 2009

Birth Weight, Math And Reading Achievement Growth: A Multilevel Between-Sibling, Between-Families Approach, Bridget J. Goosby, Jacob Cheadle

Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications

We used multilevel covariance structure analysis to study the relationship between birth weight, family context and youth math and reading comprehension growth from approximately ages 5 through 14 within and between families. Using data from the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth Child Sample, we examined the relationship between birth weight and subsequent academic achievement growth disparities, distinguishing between birth weight and other contextual social confounders. We found that smaller birth weight is associated with lower math and reading scores at age 5. Additional findings indicated that the home environment has important developmental consequences from early childhood and into adolescence. Overall, …

Detoxification Of Jatropha Curcas Press Cake Throough Heat, Chemical Solvent, And Fermentation, With Preliminary Feed Testing In Tilapia (Oreochromis Niloticus L.), Stephanie Ferrer. Nunez

Undergraduate Theses

Studies show that Jatropha curcas press cake has high crude protein content of 53-58%. However, the cake has been found to be very toxic to fish, rats, and chickens. Jatropha press cake was detoxified using heat treatment, solvent extraction and fermentation with mix microbial inoculants for three weeks. Using Tilapia fingerlings (Oreochromis niloticusa L.), a two-week experiments was conducted to evaluate the nutritional quality of the detoxified Jatropha press cake. Fingerlings were randomly distributed in eight treatment groups and fed the following diets: standard diet of commercial feed (T1) , fermented cake (T2), 50% commercial feed +50% fermented cake (T3), …

Development Of Microbial And Enzymatic Fuel Cells For Bio-Inspired Power Sources, Fatih Dogan, Shelley Minteer

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This report is based on some of the revolutionary concepts described in the Road Map on Bioinspired Power Systems within the AFRLRW Campus Challenge II. Development of biofuel cell concepts integrated with fuel regeneration and energy storage capabilities are proposed to create a compact and self-sustaining power system. The first part of this work identified a sediment based microbial fuel cell that could power small electronics and maintain electrical activity over long periods of time. AFRLRW does not feel that this work adequately addresses the original scope nor does it provide a basis on which to continue work. The second …
