Does Unemployment Decrease Cancer Mortality?, Benjamin Torres Galick May 2009

Does Unemployment Decrease Cancer Mortality?, Benjamin Torres Galick

Economics Honors Projects

Recent research indicates that healthier lifestyles during recessions decrease the most common U.S. mortalities, but not cancer. However, they combine specific cancer mortalities with different progressions into one, possibly obscuring cancer’s link to unemployment. This paper estimates a fixed-effects regression model on unemployment and the nine most prevalent cancers between 1988 and 2002 using state-level panel data. Five cancers and total cancer are procyclical, and suggest that unemployment affects both incidence and gestation for some cancers. Consistent with the medical literature, this paper contradicts previous economic research and suggests that behavioral factors significantly impact cancer mortality.

Diet-Related Changes In Sensitivity To The Pharmacological Effects Of Delta-9-Tetrahydrocannabinol, Mayo Wright May 2009

Diet-Related Changes In Sensitivity To The Pharmacological Effects Of Delta-9-Tetrahydrocannabinol, Mayo Wright

Theses and Dissertations

Recent evidence suggests that sustained consumption of a high-fat diet is associated with reduced CB1 receptor expression in some brain areas. Many of the neuromodulatory functions of endogenous cannabinoids are mediated by the CB1 receptor. The CB1 receptor also mediates the behavioral and physiological effects of delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (delta-9-THC), the primary psychoactive constituent of marijuana. While high-fat diets are associated with region-specific changes in CB1 receptor expression, it is not clear whether such changes are behaviorally relevant. To that end, separate groups of male and female rats were placed on either a high-fat diet or a standard diet. Cannabinoid function was …

Validation Of Novel Indirect Calorimetry System Based On Luminescence Quenching On-Airway Oxygen Sensor, Tammy Anderson, Dwayne Westenskow May 2009

Validation Of Novel Indirect Calorimetry System Based On Luminescence Quenching On-Airway Oxygen Sensor, Tammy Anderson, Dwayne Westenskow

Utah Space Grant Consortium

Metabolic gas exchange monitors are frequently used in the intensive care unit to study the oxygen kinetics and appraise the nutritional requirements for acutely ill patients. In a method known as indirect calorimetry, energy expenditure information is obtained non-invasively by measuring the respiratory gases under resting conditions.1-3 A modified Weir equation relates the oxygen consumption (VO2) and the carbon dioxide production (VCO2) to the caloric burn rate.4 The resting energy expenditure (REE) represents approximately 70% of the total energy expenditure (TEE). Critical illness has been shown to alter metabolic rate and influence VO2. Inflammation, sepsis, seizures, and weaning from ventilation …

Use Of Gallagher® 2-Layer Deer-Exclusion Fencing To Temporarily Deter White-Tailed Deer Browsing In Food Plots, J. Parris, M. Mengak, K. Miller

Wildlife Damage Management Conference

Warm-season food plots provide supplemental nutrition to white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus). Large-seeded legumes such as soybeans, lablab, cowpeas, and others are a common component of warm-season food plots that deer prefer to browse early in development, preventing the food plot from reaching the highest possible nutritional value. We tested a Gallagher® Animal Management Systems 2-layer deer-exclusion fence design at two 400 m2 warm-season food plots in Madison County, Georgia. Each food plot contained a mixture of cowpeas and Lablab Plus, marketed by Tecomate® Wildlife Systems. We enclosed a 125 m2 (31%) portion of each …

Retrospective Barrier Placements For A Skunk Rabies Epizootic In Nw Wyoming, C. Ramey, K. Mills, R. Mclean, R. Engeman, J. Fischer

Wildlife Damage Management Conference

Striped skunks (Mephitis mephitis) are the most important reservoir of rabies on the Great Plains. In August, 1988 a skunk rabies epizootic proceeded from the "index case" west of Cowley, WY. By 1991, epizootic had reached nearly all areas in the Shoshone River Basin (SRB), and it ended in 1993. This area and the remainder of the SRB had been previously considered rabies-free. The USDA's Wildlife Services (WS) cooperated with state and local officials in a rabies monitoring and control program starting in 1990. Using information from the literature, signs, tracks, and radio-telemetry of normal and rabid skunks, …

Theses and Dissertations

The spotted cucumber beetle (Diabrotica undecimpunctata howardi Barber) is regarded as a pest of sweetpotatoes in Mississippi; however, its feeding on sweetpotatoes has not previously been documented. They are attracted to cucurbit crops that could be utilized as a trap crop or sentinel plant for management of cucumber beetles in sweetpotatoes. Studies were conducted between 2006 and 2008 to determine if cucurbit plants have the potential to serve as a trap crop or as sentinel plants for the spotted cucumber beetle in sweetpotato fields, and to determine the status of the spotted cucumber beetle as a sweetpotato pest in Mississippi. …

The Use Of Non-Invasive Monitoring Techniques For Profiling Hormonal Changes Associated With Stress And Reproductive Cyclicity In Domestic And Non-Domestic Species, Marcus Mcgee May 2009

The Use Of Non-Invasive Monitoring Techniques For Profiling Hormonal Changes Associated With Stress And Reproductive Cyclicity In Domestic And Non-Domestic Species, Marcus Mcgee

Theses and Dissertations

Accurately examining animal endocrine profiles pose unique challenges due to possible human interaction influencing basal values. Standard methods of gathering information about an animal’s endocrine status are often dependent upon restraint and use of invasive methodologies. However to accurately monitor the influence management practices, blood sampling sometimes requires that hormone measurements be observed from animals in a relaxed state. To this end, methods for non-invasive monitoring (NIM) are greatly needed to obtain basal endocrine measurements. Such methods include fecal collections followed by hormone extraction, and remote sampling technologies for obtaining blood samples without handling. The overall objective of this study …

Effect On Children's Eating Behavior And Self-Efficacy From Participation In Fun With Food Summer Camp, Alma Land Hill

Theses and Dissertations

Surface heterogeneities cause differential heating that can generate mesoscale convective boundaries, sometimes leading to cloud development and enhanced localized precipitation. A preferred cloud pattern has been identified across Maryland and the Delmarva Peninsula region from 1998-2006 through the detection of cumuliform clouds on days when synoptic-scale forcing is weak. Hourly visible Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES) imagery data are used to identify convective cloud masses. This allows quantitative description of the frequency and spatiotemporal extent of the clouds, helping forecasters gain insight into when and where they are likely to develop. Despite the inability to determine the underlying causes of …

Theses and Dissertations

Anthracnose, incited by Colletotrichum cereale, is a destructive disease of physiologically stressed creeping bentgrass putting greens in Mississippi and Alabama. Anthracnose severity and frequency of occurrence have increased over the past 15 years, and fungicide resistance may have had a role in the increase. In vitro bioassays were performed to evaluate thiophanate methyl and azoxystrobin against C. cereale isolates exposed to the fungicides and baseline isolates that had not been exposed to either fungicide. All isolates collected from creeping bentgrass were uninhibited by both fungicides at discriminatory doses. Partial nucleotide sequences of the â-tubulin 2 (thiophanate methyl) or cytochrome b …

Effect Of Starter Cultures On Lactobacillus Acidophilus Survival And Gene Expression In Yogurt, Elizabeth W. Ng

Master's Theses

Probiotics, especially Lactobacillus acidophilus, strains have increasingly been incorporated into food products as dietary adjuncts due to their purported health benefits. Dairy products, especially yogurt, are frequently used as probiotic delivery systems. To realize therapeutic effects, it is important to consume a high amount of probiotics. However, maintaining a sufficient amount of viable probiotics in yogurt throughout the shelf life has been a challenge as starter cultures have shown to possess some deleterious effects on probiotic survival. The main objective of this thesis project was to determine the extent of antagonistic effects imposed by yogurt starter cultures (Lactobacillus delbrueckii ssp. …
