Parental Involvement Typologies In Rural Community Schools: A Qualitative Investigation., Amy Hurst Case

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

There are a number of pressing issues facing today's educational society. Among the most controversial is the research and information surrounding the perceived positive or negative effects of parental involvement and barriers that restrict parental involvement. The purpose of this study was to examine 6 parental involvement typologies and their use and existence in 3 East Tennessee elementary schools. The Epstein (1987) typologies were used to classify parent involvement modalities. Parents who had a child enrolled in the 3rd, 4th, or 5th grade during the 2007-2008 school year were interviewed. The interviews followed an open-ended interview guide and the research …

University Of Kentucky Adult Learning Focused Institution (Alfi) Task Force: Findings And Recommendations, Randolph Hollingsworth

Undergraduate Education White Papers

This report to Provost Kumble Subbaswamy details the wide-ranging work over two years of the UK Adult Learning Focused Institution (ALFI) Task Force. The findings in sum assert that the undergraduate population at the University is primarily of a traditional age and that little explicit attention is given to adult learners in UK's stated policies or procedures. The recommendations are that by becoming more "adult friendly" the University could also provide more flexibility and promise for success to all its students.

The Complexities And Opportunities Of Examining Scale In Ecology – With Application To Grassland Management, Skadi Von Reis May 2009

The Complexities And Opportunities Of Examining Scale In Ecology – With Application To Grassland Management, Skadi Von Reis

Macalester Reviews in Biogeography

Understanding the way in which biodiversity is created and maintained is the fundamental goal of applied ecology. In order to comprehend how diversity is distributed and isolate the factors contributing to diversity, multiple scales of study must be considered. Studies which base their conclusions on an isolated snapshot of an ecological system find their results challenged by considering both historical and spatial scales. The question of scale: its definition, the relevant scale at which biological processes produce observable patterns, the translation from small to large scales and the theoretical and technological complications scale presents, remain contentious issues in ecology. This …

Biogeography Of Microorganisms Inhabiting Marine Sponges, Suzy C. Szumowski May 2009

Biogeography Of Microorganisms Inhabiting Marine Sponges, Suzy C. Szumowski

Macalester Reviews in Biogeography

Sponge-associated microorganisms are an intriguing system for the consideration of biogeographic patterns due to complications arising from their small size and their symbiotic relationship with sponges. Whether or not microorganisms are capable of exhibiting biogeographic patterns is a topic of heated debate in the literature. Recent studies utilizing new identification techniques have revealed an astonishing amount of diversity and spatiotemporal stability in microorganism communities. Case studies outlined in this paper suggest that some sponge-associated microorganisms represent monophyletic groups that have evolved speciesspecific associations with their hosts. The biogeography of these organisms is receiving increasing attention because they are one of …

A Review Of Endemic Species In The Eastern Arc Afromontane Region: Importance, Inferences, And Conservation, Carl Skarbek

Macalester Reviews in Biogeography

The Eastern Arc mountain region has been identified as one of the top 25 biodiversity “hotspots” worldwide, and contains a large proportion of endemic species. The endemic species are invaluable resources. This review paper will explore and discuss the possible theories behind the high rate of endemism. The importance of these endemics to local peoples and to the greater global community has been studied thoroughly, and these results are presented in further detail in this paper. The Eastern Arc is also facing many problems that are threatening the biodiversity and rare endemic species of this region. Human expansion into natural …

The Biogeography Of Plant Domestication, Alese M. Colehour May 2009

The Biogeography Of Plant Domestication, Alese M. Colehour

Macalester Reviews in Biogeography

Ranging between 11,000 and 4,000 years ago, several independent origins of agriculture appeared, though scholars disagree on exactly how many. This period, known as the “Neolithic Revolution” or the “Origins of Agriculture,” marks the initial emergence of food production economies. Archaeologists and biologists have worked alongside one another, often using a biogeographical approach, to investigate the origins of useful species, their range expansion, and genetic evolution through analyzing remains found at excavation sites around the world. Plant communities influence patterns in human behaviors and by understanding trends in biogeography we can begin to answer questions such as: Why did plant …

Delivering Interventions To Reduce The Global Burden Of Stillbirths: Improving Service Supply And Community Demand., Zulfiqar A Bhutta, Gary L Darmstadt, Rachel A Haws, Mohammad Yawar Yakoob, Joy E Lawn

Woman and Child Health

Background:Although a number of antenatal and intrapartum interventions have shown some evidence of impact on stillbirth incidence, much confusion surrounds ideal strategies for delivering these interventions within health systems, particularly in low-/middle-income countries where 98% of the world's stillbirths occur. Improving the uptake of quality antenatal and intrapartum care is critical for evidence-based interventions to generate an impact at the population level. This concluding paper of a series of papers reviewing the evidence for stillbirth interventions examines the evidence for community and health systems approaches to improve uptake and quality of antenatal and intrapartum care, and synthesises programme and …

Reducing Stillbirths: Behavioural And Nutritional Interventions Before And During Pregnancy., Mohammad Yawar Yakoob, Esme V Menezes, Tanya Soomro, Rachel A Haws, Gary L Darmstadt, Zulfiqar Ahmed Bhutta

Woman and Child Health

Background:The vast majority of global stillbirths occur in low- and middle-income countries, and in many settings, the majority of stillbirths occur antenatally, prior to the onset of labour. Poor nutritional status, lack of antenatal care and a number of behaviours increase women's risk of stillbirth in many resource-poor settings. Interventions to reduce these risks could reduce the resulting burden of stillbirths, but the evidence for the impact of such interventions has not yet been comprehensively evaluated.

Methods:

This second paper of a systematic review of interventions that could plausibly impact stillbirth rates covers 12 different interventions relating to behavioural …

Reducing Stillbirths: Prevention And Management Of Medical Disorders And Infections During Pregnancy., Esme V Menezes, Mohammad Yawar Yakoob, Tanya Soomro, Rachel A Haws, Gary L Darmstadt, Zulfiqar Ahmed Bhutta

Woman and Child Health

Background:An estimated two-thirds of the world's 3.2 million stillbirths occur antenatally, prior to labour, and are often overlooked in policy and programs. Poorly recognised, untreated or inadequately treated maternal infections such as syphilis and malaria, and maternal conditions including hypertensive disorders, are known risk factors for stillbirth.

Methods:

We undertook a systematic review of the evidence for 16 antenatal interventions with the potential to prevent stillbirths. We searched a range of sources including PubMed and the Cochrane Library. For interventions with prior Cochrane reviews, we conducted additional meta-analyses including eligible newer randomised controlled trials following the Cochrane protocol. We …

Anxiety And Birth Order: Does Birth Order Play A Role In A Child's Anxiety Level?, Tarah R. Pearson

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to see if there is an interaction between anxiety levels and birth order. It was hypothesized that the first-born child would have a higher level of total anxiety than a non-first born child. It was also hypothesized that females would have an overall higher level of anxiety than males. The Revised Children's Manifest Anxiety Scale 2nd Edition, which was used to measure the different subtests of anxiety, tested for specific types of anxiety: total anxiety, worrying, social anxiety, physiological anxiety, and defensiveness. It was hypothesized that females would feel a higher level of …

Physical Activity, Physical Fitness And The Psychosocial Well-Being Of Obese Adolescents, Nichole Kelly May 2009

Physical Activity, Physical Fitness And The Psychosocial Well-Being Of Obese Adolescents, Nichole Kelly

Theses and Dissertations

Overweight and obesity are associated with an array of negative physical and psychosocial symptoms in adolescents. Numerous pediatric obesity interventions have emerged in an attempt to address this significant public health concern. However, few have focused on African American females, a particularly high risk group for negative health behaviors and associated complications. Moreover, research examining the psychosocial changes associated with increases in physical activity and fitness, although promising in elder and adult populations, is nearly nonexistent in adolescents. Thus, the current study addressed limitations in the research and examined the psychosocial outcomes of adolescent participants in T.E.E.N.S., a culturally sensitive, …

Determinants Of International Long-Distance Eldercare: Evidence From Ghanaian Immigrants In The United States, Stephen Kodwo May 2009

Determinants Of International Long-Distance Eldercare: Evidence From Ghanaian Immigrants In The United States, Stephen Kodwo

Theses and Dissertations

Studies of Ghanaians who have immigrated to the United States indicate that both economic and emotional support continue to be provided to non-migrant families in Ghana. However support to “family relatives” has been studied generally, without specifying age. Thus, relationships between immigrants and their elderly relatives, particularly those who may be frail and vulnerable, have not been the focus of previous research. In addition, it is necessary to examine the dynamics that shape attitudes towards elderly people, and which in turn influence eldercare patterns among Ghanaian immigrants. Based on the literature, the researcher identified four factors relevant to international long-distance …
