Jefferson Hospital Staff Papers and Presentations

BACKGROUND: Candidemia remains a major cause of morbidity and mortality in the health care setting, and the epidemiology of Candida infection is changing.

METHODS: Clinical data from patients with candidemia were extracted from the Prospective Antifungal Therapy (PATH) Alliance database, a comprehensive registry that collects information regarding invasive fungal infections. A total of 2019 patients, enrolled from 1 July 2004 through 5 March 2008, were identified. Data regarding the candidemia episode were analyzed, including the specific fungal species and patient survival at 12 weeks after diagnosis.

RESULTS: The incidence of candidemia caused by non-Candida albicans Candida species (54.4%) was higher …

Comparing Bootstrap And Jackknife Variance Estimation Methods For Area Under The Roc Curve Using One-Stage Cluster Survey Data, Allison Dunning Jun 2009

Comparing Bootstrap And Jackknife Variance Estimation Methods For Area Under The Roc Curve Using One-Stage Cluster Survey Data, Allison Dunning

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this research is to examine the bootstrap and jackknife as methods for estimating the variance of the AUC from a study using a complex sampling design and to determine which characteristics of the sampling design effects this estimation. Data from a one-stage cluster sampling design of 10 clusters was examined. Factors included three true AUCs (.60, .75, and .90), three prevalence levels (50/50, 70/30, 90/10) (non-disease/disease), and finally three number of clusters sampled (2, 5, or 7). A simulated sample was constructed for each of the 27 combinations of AUC, prevalence and number of clusters. Estimates of …

Conjugated Linoleic Acid (Cla) Prevents Age-Associated Skeletal Muscle Loss, Md M. Rahman, Ganesh V. Halade, Amina El Jamali, Gabriel Fernandes

Internal Medicine Faculty Publications

In this study, we examined the effect of CLA isomers in preventing age-associated muscle loss and the mechanisms underlying this effect, using 12-months-old C57BL/6 mice fed 10% corn oil (CO) or a diet supplemented with 0.5% c9t11-CLA, t10c12-CLA, or c9t11-CLA+t10c12-CLA (CLA-mix) for 6 months. Both t10c12-CLA and CLA-mix groups showed significantly higher muscle mass, as compared to CO and c9t11-CLA groups, measured by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry and muscle wet weight. Enhanced mitochondrial ATP production, with higher membrane potential, and elevated muscle antioxidant enzymes (catalase and glutathione peroxidase) production, accompanied by slight increase in H2O2 production was noted in t10c12-CLA and …

A Truncation Mutation In Tbc1d4 In A Family With Acanthosis Nigricans And Postprandial Hyperinsulinemia, Satya Dash, Hiroyuki Sano, Justin J. Rochford, Robert K. Semple

Dartmouth Scholarship

Tre-2, BUB2, CDC16, 1 domain family member 4 (TBC1D4) (AS160) is a Rab-GTPase activating protein implicated in insulin-stimulated glucose transporter 4 (GLUT4) translocation in adipocytes and myotubes. To determine whether loss-of-function mutations in TBC1D4 might impair GLUT4 translocation and cause insulin resistance in humans, we screened the coding regions of this gene in 156 severely insulin-resistant patients. A female presenting at age 11 years with acanthosis nigricans and extreme postprandial hyperinsulinemia was heterozygous for a premature stop mutation (R363X) in TBC1D4. After demonstrating reduced expression of wild-type TBC1D4 protein and expression of the truncated protein in lymphocytes from the proband, …

Evaluating The Effects Of Exergaming On Physical Activity Among Inactive Children In A Physical Education Classroom, Victoria A. Fogel Jun 2009

Evaluating The Effects Of Exergaming On Physical Activity Among Inactive Children In A Physical Education Classroom, Victoria A. Fogel

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Childhood obesity is a serious concern that requires the attention of the behavioral community. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (2007) recommends that children engage in physical activity for 60 minutes per day. Children spend the majority of their day in school, making school an ideal environment to increase the opportunity for physical activity. Simple, straightforward interventions that can be applied in the school setting, which take into consideration the environment and focus on maintenance by making the process of engaging in physical activity reinforcing, are greatly needed. Video games have been noted in the literature as a …

The Relationship Between Liver Fat Content And Unenhanced Computed Tomography, Karen Shoebotham Jun 2009

The Relationship Between Liver Fat Content And Unenhanced Computed Tomography, Karen Shoebotham

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

The purpose of this study was to chart unenhanced CT liver and spleen attenuation data on patients with normal and fatty livers to demonstrate a relationship between liver fat content and attenuation on unenhanced CT using MR chemical shift imaging as a reference standard. Retrospective data was gathered on 116 patients from NYU Tisch Hospital who had undergone both an unenhanced CT and MR opposed-phase imaging of the liver within 2 months. MR fat fraction (MR FF) was calculated using signal decrease on in]phase and opposed]phase imaging, with a cutoff of 0.2 considered significant fatty infiltration. Three CT liver attenuation …

Do Caregivers Accurately Assess The Decision-Making Ability Of Their Cognitively-Impaired Relatives?, Mila Rainof

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

Although caregivers are often faced with determining whether their relatives have the decisio- making ability to solve everyday functional problems, it is unknown whether caregivers' immediate opinions reflect more formal clinical assessments. In this study, we examine whether caregivers' assessments of decision-making ability are consistent with measurements of decision-making ability using the Assessing Capacity in Everyday Decision-making (ACED). This study was cross-sectional, performed in an outpatient specialty clinic. For 39 patients with mild to moderate cognitive impairment, we asked caregivers a series of questions about the patients' overall and specific decision-making ability. Responses were scored on a five-point Likert scale. …

Occurrence Of Camponotus Pennsylvanicus (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) In Trees Previously Infested With Enaphalodes Rufulus (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae) In The Ozark Mountains Of Arkansas, Robin M. Verble, Fred M. Stephen

Biological Sciences Faculty Research & Creative Works

Black carpenter ants, Camponotus pennsylvanicus (DeGeer), are nearly ubiquitous in North American forests. These ants are documented as predators of red oak borer, Enaphalodes rufulus (Haldeman), a native longhorn beetle that experienced an unprecedented population increase synonymous with an oak decline event in the oak hickory forests of the Ozark Mountains of Arkansas from the late 1990s until 2005. We examined previous red oak borer emergence holes, tree crown conditions, and site aspects in 13 pre-established vegetation monitoring plots and correlated these forest and tree attributes with the presence or absence of black carpenter ants. At each site, all red …
