Quantitative Ultrasound Versus Dual-Energy X-Ray Absorptiometry For Diagnosis Of Osteoporosis In Iraqi Women With Rheumatoid Arthritis, Nizar Abdulateef Jassim
Iraqi Postgraduate Medical Journal
ABSTRACT: BACKGROUND: Osteoporosis is a major co-morbidity in rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Bone mineral density (BMD) in adults can be assessed precisely by dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA). In recent years, quantitative ultrasound (QUS) technique has been used in radiation-free assessment of bone density by mean of ultrasound waves attenuated by bone. OBJECTIVE: The aim of study was to compare QUS to DXA in assessing BMD in patients with RA. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Fifty women with RA (diagnosed according to ACR criteria) of 2-12 years duration, their ages range from 30-72 years, who were seen at Osteoporosis Clinic in Baghdad Teaching Hospital …

Woman and Child Health
Despite gains in controlling mortality relating to diarrhoeal disease, the burden of disease remains unacceptably high. To refocus health research to target disease-burden reduction as the goal of research in child health, the Child Health and Nutrition Research Initiative developed a systematic strategy to rank health research options. This priority-setting exercise included listing of 46 competitive research options in diarrhoeal disease and their critical and quantitative appraisal by 10 experts based on five criteria for research that reflect the ability of the research to be translated into interventions and achieved disease-burden reduction. These criteria included the answerability of the research …

The Relationship Between Eating Disorder Symptomology, Body Image Concerns, And Early Maladaptive Schemas, Stephanie D'Angelo
The Relationship Between Eating Disorder Symptomology, Body Image Concerns, And Early Maladaptive Schemas, Stephanie D'Angelo
Theses and Dissertations
This study examined the relationship between eating disorder symptomology, body image concerns, and early maladaptive schemas. The specific eating disorder symptoms were binging, purging and restricting. Participants were undergraduate college women. Eating disorder symptomology was measured along a continuum so that the sample encompassed individuals with eating disorder pathology ranging from asymptomatic to severe symptoms. Multiple regression analyses indicated that body image concerns predicted a significant proportion of variance in binging, purging and restrictive behaviors. Specifically, shape concerns predicted significant unique variance in restrictive behaviors. Early maladaptive schemas were found to account for a significant proportion of variance among restrictive …

The Influence Of Mastication On Soils And Fuels In Moist And Dry Forests Of The Northern Rocky Mountains, Theresa Jain, Russel T. Graham
The Influence Of Mastication On Soils And Fuels In Moist And Dry Forests Of The Northern Rocky Mountains, Theresa Jain, Russel T. Graham
North American Forest Ecology Workshop
We evaluated the applicability of mastication as a fuel treatment alternative within Northern Rocky Mountain moist and dry forests to treat post-harvest activity slash (moist forest) and standing trees (dry forest). On the moist forest site, we compared four different slash treatments, mastication, machine grapple piling, lop and scatter, and a control within a wildland urban interface setting to determine the effects of these treatments on soil nutrition, forest floor depth, and woody debris distributions. We randomly assigned the slash treatments and controls to 12 one-acre plots. Nitrogen, soil carbon, and magnesium concentrations within the soil components were not significantly …

Hexabromocyclododecane Decreases The Lytic Function And Atp Levels Of Human Natural Killer Cells, Natasha C. Hinkson, Margaret M. Whalen
Chemistry Faculty Research
This study investigates the effect of hexabromocyclododecane (HBCD) on the lytic function of human natural killer (NK) cells and on ATP levels in NK cells. NK cells are capable of lysing tumor cells, virally infected cells, and antibody-coated cells. HBCD is a brominated cyclic alkane used primarily as an additive flame retardant. If HBCD interferes with NK cell function, this could increase risk of tumor development and/or viral infection. NK cells were exposed to various concentrations of HBCD for 24 and 48 h and 6 days before determining lytic function and ATP levels. ATP levels and lytic function were also …

Conference on China and Global Climate Change : Reconciling International Fairness and Protection of the Atmospheric Commons
In the climate debate, there is a stalemate when the discussion revolves around other's responsibility based on historical emissions and present (un)willingness to participate in international treaties justified by a necessary focus on development on the one side, and an unwillingness to act if the others do not also do so, based on concern about economic competitiveness, on the other side. The problem arises from a view that sees it as a basic necessity to first develop, get rich enough, and then clean up, as suggested in Kuznet's Curve, and about relative costs of alternative energy and production, respectively. Looking …

Direct Intra-Tumoral Injection Of Zinc-Acetate Halts Tumor Growth In A Xenograft Model Of Prostate Cancer, Maulik R. Shah, Christopher L. Kriedt, Nathan H. Lents, Mary K. Hoyer, Nimah Jamaluddin, Claudette Klein, Joseph Baldassare
Publications and Research
Intracellular levels of zinc have shown a strong inverse correlation to growth and malignancy of prostate cancer. To date, studies of zinc supplementation in prostate cancer have been equivocal and have not accounted for bioavailability of zinc. Therefore, we hypothesized that direct intra-tumoral injection of zinc could impact prostate cancer growth. In this study, we evaluated the cytotoxic properties of the pH neutral salt zinc acetate on the prostate cancer cell lines PC3, DU145 and LNCaP. Zinc acetate killed prostate cancer cell lines in vitro, independent of androgen sensitivity, in a dose-dependent manner in a range between 200 and 600 …

BACKGROUND: A sudden increase in exercise and energy expenditure is associated with an increase in protein turnover and nitrogen excretion. This study examined how a sudden increase in exercise-induced energy expenditure affected whole body protein metabolism and nitrogen balance in people of differing levels of aerobic fitness. We hypothesized that alterations in whole-body protein turnover would be attenuated, and nitrogen balance would be preserved, in individual with higher levels of aerobic fitness. METHODS: Eleven men, categorized as either having a lower (LOW-FIT; n = 5) or higher (FIT; n = 6) aerobic fitness level, completed a 4-d baseline period (BL) …

This report estimates the direct and indirect costs of care for women for the major chronic diseases and conditions that women face across the lifespan. It also identifies the key primary care and preventive services that can lead to prevention, early detection or early intervention for these conditions. Health care screening, counseling, early diagnosis, and early intervention health care services are important for women at each stage of their lives. But women typically seek care in primary care settings for family planning services and cancer screening prior to becoming pregnant. As a result, high quality care during the reproductive years …
