Energy-Efficient, Flow-Specific Medium Access Using Preamble Sampling, T. Owens Walker Iii, Murali Tummala, John Mceachen Sep 2009

Energy-Efficient, Flow-Specific Medium Access Using Preamble Sampling, T. Owens Walker Iii, Murali Tummala, John Mceachen

United States Navy: Publications

Current wireless sensor network applications face challenging power constraints that demand low duty cycles. In this paper, we propose an energy-efficient, flow-specific medium access scheme that is capable of achieving low duty cycles while taking advantage of the performance improvements available through a flow-specific medium access approach. The scheme is based on an adaptive sleep and wake cycle that responds to changes in both contention and non-contention traffic loads through the use of preamble sampling. A preamble sampling probability parameter is introduced to manage the trade-off between energy efficiency and network throughput and delay performance. A performance analysis is conducted …

The Anchor, Volume 123.04: September 30, 2009, Hope College

The Anchor: 2009

The Anchor began in 1887 and was first issued weekly in 1914. Covering national and campus news alike, Hope College’s student-run newspaper has grown over the years to encompass over two-dozen editors, reporters, and staff. For much of The Anchor's history, the latest issue was distributed across campus each Wednesday throughout the academic school year (with few exceptions). In recent years The Anchor moved to monthly print issues and a more frequently updated website. The Anchor is now published in print twice per academic semester. Occasionally, the volume and/or issue numbering is irregular.

Culturally Manipulated Organisations. Or From The Pyramid To The Network And Back Again, Sławomir Magala Sep 2009

Culturally Manipulated Organisations. Or From The Pyramid To The Network And Back Again, Sławomir Magala

European Management Studies

It is not just the food that is being genetically manipulated but also organisations, but in a cultured way. The renunciation of Fordism as a dominant organisational formula - while simultaneously transferring the burden of Fordism onto the shoulders of developing countries - is an experiment in cultural manipulation. The ruining of state socialism in East Europe as well as in Russia and China, while simultaneously attempting to control the entirety of social life in the image of socialism - also. The decline of trade unions and of political parties, the growing role of mass media - these are being …

Emerging Leaders Program Team Projects In Collaboration With Boston World Partnerships: 2009 Agenda/Executive Report, Patricia Neilson Sep 2009

Emerging Leaders Program Team Projects In Collaboration With Boston World Partnerships: 2009 Agenda/Executive Report, Patricia Neilson

Emerging Leaders Program Team Projects

Eight teams of Fellows from the Emerging Leaders Program (ELP) provided their input and ideas to the newly launched Boston World Partnerships (BWP), from February through July 2009. Last year, our 2008 Fellows learned about the new thinking in corporate social responsibility: get professionals involved by having them contribute their skills to non-profit organizations. Our 2009 Fellows contributed their skills as “thinking partners” with BWP – in the areas of strategic planning, market outreach, competitive analysis, and information technology. The Fellows met regularly with Dave McLaughlin, Yoon Lee, and Eric Schoenfeld from Boston World Partnerships.

What's Race Got To Do With It? Press Coverage Of The Latino Electorate In The 2008 Presidential Primary Season, Laura Gomez

Faculty Scholarship

This article presents a critical analysis of press coverage of Latinos and the presidential election during the Democratic Primary, from January through June 2008. The foundation of this article is a content analysis of 408 articles published in four newspapers about Latinos and the presidential election during the primary season. The four newspapers -- The Los Angeles Times, The New York Times, The Chicago Tribune and The Dallas Morning News -- were selected because they are well respected as newspapers of record and because they represent diverse regions of the country (two from the northeast, two from the southwest). Each …

Campus Master Planning Publications

Through its work, data collection, outreach, and careful review of various studies and information, the committee is led to conclude that as it moves forward with implementation of its Master Plan, UMass Boston has a tremendous opportunity to plan for and design spaces that support and promote the learning, teaching, and research requirements of the campus community. It is hoped that the recommended guidelines and standards outlined in this report will assist and inform the planning and design of new and renovated campus facilities and specifically address the technological needs of classrooms, laboratories, offices, informal study areas, and social spaces …
