Enhanced Co2 Storage In Confined Geologic Formations, Roland Tenjoh Okwen Sep 2009

Enhanced Co2 Storage In Confined Geologic Formations, Roland Tenjoh Okwen

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Many geoscientists endorse Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) as a potential strategy

for mitigating emissions of greenhouse gases. Deep saline aquifers have been reported to

have larger CO

2 storage capacity than other formation types because of their availability

worldwide and less competitive usage. This work proposes an analytical model for screening

potential CO

2 storage sites and investigates injection strategies that can be employed to

enhance CO

2 storage.

The analytical model provides of estimates CO

2

storage efficiency, formation pressure

profiles, and CO

Subcellular Min Oscillations As A Single-Cell Reporter Of The Action Of Polycations Protamine And Gentamicin On Escherichia Coli, Benjamin P.B. Downing, Andrew D. Rutenberg, Ahmed Touhami, Manfred Jericho Sep 2009

Subcellular Min Oscillations As A Single-Cell Reporter Of The Action Of Polycations Protamine And Gentamicin On Escherichia Coli, Benjamin P.B. Downing, Andrew D. Rutenberg, Ahmed Touhami, Manfred Jericho

Physics & Astronomy Faculty Publications

Background: In Escherichia coli, MinD-GFP fusion proteins show rapid pole to pole oscillations. The objective was to investigate the effects of extracellular cations on the subcellular oscillation of cytoplasmic MinD within Escherichia coli. Methodology/Principal Findings: We exposed bacteria to the extracellular cations Ca++, Mg++, the cationic antimicrobial peptide (CAP) protamine, and the cationic aminoglycoside gentamicin. We found rapid and substantial increases in the average MinD oscillation periods in the presence of any of these polyvalent cations. For Ca++ and Mg++ the increases in period were transient, even with a constant extracellular concentration, while increases in period for protamine or gentamicin …

Wolf Totem’S “Rational Exploration” Of Civilization And Barbarians, William A. Callahan

China Beat Blog: Archive 2008-2012

China Beat has examined the bestselling novel Wolf Totem (Lang tuteng) from a number of different angles, including reviews (by Nicole Barnes and Timothy Weston) as well as several cultural critiques of the book and its media coverage (by Jeffrey Wasserstrom and Haiyan Lee). Now, on the eve of China’s big anniversary, and in a moment, simultaneously, when ethnicity is a crucial flashpoint in the PRC, William Callahan reflects on what the book tells us about China’s nation-building ideology.

The fantastic success of Jiang Rong’s Lang tuteng [Wolf Totem] shows how notions of Chinese identity and culture are moving in …

Many issues have come before the Federal Communications Committee (FCC) in the last year. Some actions were taken (as with particular mergers), some actions were postponed (as with Universal Service Fund reform), and some issues are currently being tackled (the National Broadband Strategic Plan). Methods For Cancer Detection, Kimberly W. Anderson, Kimberly M.L. May, Leonidas G. Bachas

Chemical and Materials Engineering Faculty Patents

A method is provided for detecting an analyte indicative of a cancer or a metastatic disease condition, which utilizes the ability of the analyte to induce permeability in a barrier. The method includes providing a biosensor having a barrier which is substantially impermeable to an ion, a permeable membrane which is selective for the ion, and a detector capable of detecting the ion. The biosensor is contacted with a sample including at least one of the ion and the analyte, wherein the analyte causes at least a portion of the ion to pass through the barrier and the membrane. Passage …
