Scalable Detection Of Partial Near-Duplicate Videos By Visual-Temporal Consistency, Hung-Khoon Tan, Chong-Wah Ngo, Richang Hong, Tat-Seng Chua Oct 2009

Scalable Detection Of Partial Near-Duplicate Videos By Visual-Temporal Consistency, Hung-Khoon Tan, Chong-Wah Ngo, Richang Hong, Tat-Seng Chua

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Following the exponential growth of social media, there now exist huge repositories of videos online. Among the huge volumes of videos, there exist large numbers of near-duplicate videos. Most existing techniques either focus on the fast retrieval of full copies or near-duplicates, or consider localization in a heuristic manner. This paper considers the scalable detection and localization of partial near-duplicate videos by jointly considering visual similarity and temporal consistency. Temporal constraints are embedded into a network structure as directed edges. Through the structure, partial alignment is novelly converted into a network flow problem where highly efficient solutions exist. To precisely …

Mining Quantified Temporal Rules: Formalism, Algorithms, And Evaluation, David Lo, Ganesan Ramalingam, Venkatesh-Prasad Ranganath, Kapil Vaswani

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Libraries usually impose constraints on how clients should use them. Often these constraints are not well-documented. In this paper, we address the problem of recovering such constraints automatically, a problem referred to as specification mining. Given some client programs that use a given library, we identify constraints on the library usage that are (almost) satisfied by the given set of clients. The class of rules we target for mining combines simple binary temporal operators with state predicates (involving equality constraints) and quantification. This is a simple yet expressive subclass of temporal properties that allows us to capture many common API usage …

Journal of the Hong Kong College of Cardiology

Cardiovascular scientific production in Europe is growing both in quantity and in quality. Promoting high-quality research is a major goal of the European Society of Cardiology (ESC).1-3 The ESC has two highly respected official general journals, namely the European Heart Journal and Cardiovascular Research, devoted to clinical and basic research respectively.1-3 The ESC also publishes several sub- speciality official journals covering the full spectrum of cardiovascular diseases and related techniques. Most European countries, however, also have their own cardiovascular journals. National Society Cardiovascular Journals (NSCJ) are time-honoured and classically disseminate high-quality scientific research mainly originating from each particular European country. …

A Surprise Triggered Adaptive And Reactive (Star) Framework For Online Adaptation In Non-Stationary Environments, Truong-Huy Dinh Nguyen, Tze-Yun Leong Oct 2009

A Surprise Triggered Adaptive And Reactive (Star) Framework For Online Adaptation In Non-Stationary Environments, Truong-Huy Dinh Nguyen, Tze-Yun Leong

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

We consider the task of developing an adaptive autonomous agent that can interact with non-stationary environments. Traditional learning approaches such as Reinforcement Learning assume stationary characteristics over the course of the problem, and are therefore unable to learn the dynamically changing settings correctly. We introduce a novel adaptive framework that can detect dynamic changes due to non-stationary elements. The Surprise Triggered Adaptive and Reactive (STAR) framework is inspired by human adaptability in dealing with daily life changes. An agent adopting the STAR framework consists primarily of two components, Adapter and Reactor. The Reactor chooses suitable actions based on predictions made …

Streaming 3d Meshes Using Spectral Geometry Images, Ying He, Boon Seng Chew, Dayong Wang, Steven C. H. Hoi, Lap Pui Chau

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The transmission of 3D models in the form of Geometry Images (GI) is an emerging and appealing concept due to the reduction in complexity from R3 to image space and wide availability of mature image processing tools and standards. However, geometry images often suffer from the artifacts and error during compression and transmission. Thus, there is a need to address the artifact reduction, error resilience and protection of such data information during the transmission across an error prone network. In this paper, we introduce a new concept, called Spectral Geometry Images (SGI), which naturally combines the powerful spectral analysis with …

The Philanthropic Motivations Of Community College Donors: A Study Of The Educational Foundation Of A Mid-Sized, Multi-Campus Community College In Virginia, Linnie Smith Carter

Educational Leadership & Workforce Development Theses & Dissertations

This study examined the philanthropic motivations of the donors of a mid-sized, multi-campus community college in Virginia as part of a plan to enhance relationships with donors and increase the amount of private funds raised. Dependence on dwindling, traditional and limited funding sources leaves community colleges vulnerable and constantly struggling to fund the ever-increasing needs of their internal and external stakeholders (Sheldon, 2003). Community colleges are attempting to address the problem by enhancing their fundraising efforts and strengthening relationships with donors.

A mixed-method, multi-step approach was used for this research study. The approach in this study involved five steps. The …

Social Networking Among Youth: How Is 4-H Represented?, Emily Rhoades, Jerold R. Thomas, Annie Davis

Journal of Extension

Social networking is very popular among youth as Web sites on which to "hang out" and network with friends. With the many concerns about privacy and appropriateness of what youth do on these sites, it is important to understand how 4-H members are representing themselves and 4-H on the pages they post. It is also important to understand how educators are engaging and promoting programs on such sites. The study reported here used content analysis to determine what 4-H and Extension pages and groups on these sites look like and what they contain. Recommendations are made for researchers and educators.

Addressing Ethnic Change In The Northern Gulf Of Mexico Seafood Industry, Dave Burrage

Journal of Extension

Language and cultural barriers have prevented Extension from effectively engaging Vietnamese-Americans within the Gulf of Mexico fishing industry. A partnership formed with other agencies facing similar problems that allows for hiring appropriate staff seems to be a good solution. Experience has shown what works and what doesn't when engaging this particular constituency.

Conflicts Of Interest And Stock Recommendations: The Effects Of The Global Settlement And Related Regulations, Ohad Kadan, Leonardo Madureria, Rong Wang, Tzachi Zach

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

We study the effect of the Global Analyst Research Settlement and related regulations on sell-side research. These regulations attempted to mitigate the interdependence between research and investment banking. We document that following the regulations many brokerage houses have migrated from the traditional five-tier rating system to a three-tier system. Optimistic recommendations have become less frequent and more informative, whereas neutral and pessimistic recommendations have become more frequent and less informative. Importantly, the overall informativeness of recommendations has declined. The likelihood of issuing optimistic recommendations no longer depends on affiliation with the covered firm, although affiliated analysts are still reluctant to …

Shaw-Tarantino Connection: Rolling Thunder Pictures And The Exploitation Aesthetics Of Cool, Kenneth Chan Oct 2009

Shaw-Tarantino Connection: Rolling Thunder Pictures And The Exploitation Aesthetics Of Cool, Kenneth Chan

English Faculty Publications

From the Introduction: The opening credit sequence of Quentin Tarantino’s Kill Bill Vol. 1 features the Shaw Brothers logo—the letters “SB” encased within a crest symbol not unlike the one used by Warner Bros.—emblazoned across a multicolored frosted-glass backdrop, accompanied by the words “Shaw Scope” and a cheesy trumpet fanfare. For many mainstream American moviegoers, this is probably their first encounter with this iconic symbol from Hong Kong’s cinematic history. But for Hong Kong and diasporic Chinese audiences (in countries such as Taiwan, Thailand, Malaysia, and Singapore; and in Chinatowns across North America and Europe), this highly familiar branding sequence …

Taking Empirical Research Seriously, Susan Saab Fortney Oct 2009

Taking Empirical Research Seriously, Susan Saab Fortney

Faculty Scholarship

This essay considers how empirical research on the legal profession can bridge the divide between theory, social science, and the ethical practice of law. After providing background information on the growing field of empirical legal research, Part I of this essay focuses on developments in empirical legal research on lawyering. Part II discusses how collaboration with practitioners and other stakeholders can help researchers address challenges related to accessing data. Once data are obtained, Part III suggests how dissemination and sharing of research can link the academy and practicing lawyers. The conclusion urges a collaborative course of action for legal ethics …

Dynamic Coalition Formation Under Uncertainty, Daylon J. Hooper, Gilbert L. Peterson, Brett J. Borghetti Oct 2009

Dynamic Coalition Formation Under Uncertainty, Daylon J. Hooper, Gilbert L. Peterson, Brett J. Borghetti

Faculty Publications

Coalition formation algorithms are generally not applicable to real-world robotic collectives since they lack mechanisms to handle uncertainty. Those mechanisms that do address uncertainty either deflect it by soliciting information from others or apply reinforcement learning to select an agent type from within a set. This paper presents a coalition formation mechanism that directly addresses uncertainty while allowing the agent types to fall outside of a known set. The agent types are captured through a novel agent modeling technique that handles uncertainty through a belief-based evaluation mechanism. This technique allows for uncertainty in environmental data, agent type, coalition value, and …

The European Court Of Human Rights: The Problematic Nature Of The Court's Reliance On Secondary Sources For Fact-Finding, Katayoun C. Sadeghi

Connecticut Journal of International Law

The European Court of Human Rights (the "Court") is often recognized as one of the world's most successful international legal mechanisms for the protection of human rights. While cases before the Court primarily turn on issues of law,' the Court also has the authority to, and frequently must make, factual determinations.2 The Court has a set of evidentiary rules, however, those rules are few and are highly discretionary. They give the Court significant latitude in determining what evidence is admissible and how much weight it should be given.' Although the Court has the authority to conduct its own fact-finding investigations,4 …

The Psychology Of Conflicts Of Interest In Criminal Cases, Tigran W. Eldred Oct 2009

The Psychology Of Conflicts Of Interest In Criminal Cases, Tigran W. Eldred

Faculty Scholarship

This article demonstrates that current Sixth Amendment jurisprudence fails to account for how defense lawyers respond to conflicts of interest in criminal cases. Too often, the Supreme Court has made assumptions about the behavior of defense lawyers without empirical support. The result has been a confusing doctrinal landscape, which both relies upon and questions the ability of defense lawyers to address and resolve conflicts of interest.

This article fills the gap in existing literature by viewing conflicts of interest in criminal cases through the prism of behavioral economics. The research reveals that defense lawyers are subject to psychological biases that …
