Protecting Quantum Information With Entanglement And Noisy Optical Modes, Mark M. Wilde, Todd A. Brun Oct 2009

Protecting Quantum Information With Entanglement And Noisy Optical Modes, Mark M. Wilde, Todd A. Brun

Faculty Publications

We incorporate active and passive quantum error-correcting techniques to protect a set of optical information modes of a continuous-variable quantum information system. Our method uses ancilla modes, entangled modes, and gauge modes (modes in a mixed state) to help correct errors on a set of information modes. A linear-optical encoding circuit consisting of offline squeezers, passive optical devices, feedforward control, conditional modulation, and homodyne measurements performs the encoding. The result is that we extend the entanglement-assisted operator stabilizer formalism for discrete variables to continuous-variable quantum information processing. © 2009 Springer Science+Business Media, LLC.

Encoding Properties Of Auditory Neurons In The Brain Of A Soniferous Damselfish: Response To Simple Tones And Complex Conspecific Signals, Karen P. Maruska, Timothy C. Tricas Oct 2009

Encoding Properties Of Auditory Neurons In The Brain Of A Soniferous Damselfish: Response To Simple Tones And Complex Conspecific Signals, Karen P. Maruska, Timothy C. Tricas

Faculty Publications

The fish auditory system encodes important acoustic stimuli used in social communication, but few studies have examined response properties of central auditory neurons to natural signals. We determined the features and responses of single hindbrain and midbrain auditory neurons to tone bursts and playbacks of conspecific sounds in the soniferous damselfish, Abudefduf abdominalis. Most auditory neurons were either silent or had slow irregular resting discharge rates ~130 Hz but ranged from 80 to 400 Hz with strong phase-locking. This low-frequency sensitivity matches the frequency band of natural sounds. Auditory neurons were also modulated by playbacks of conspecific sounds with thresholds …

Copper Oxide Nanoparticles Induce Oxidative Stress And Cytotoxicity In Airway Epithelial Cells, Baher Fahmy, Stephania A. Cormier Oct 2009

Copper Oxide Nanoparticles Induce Oxidative Stress And Cytotoxicity In Airway Epithelial Cells, Baher Fahmy, Stephania A. Cormier

Faculty Publications

Metal oxide nanoparticles are often used as industrial catalysts and elevated levels of these particles have been clearly demonstrated at sites surrounding factories. To date, limited toxicity data on metal oxide nanoparticles are available. To understand the impact of these airborne pollutants on the respiratory system, airway epithelial (HEp-2) cells were exposed to increasing doses of silicon oxide (SiO2), ferric oxide (Fe2O3) and copper oxide (CuO) nanoparticles, the leading metal oxides found in ambient air surrounding factories. CuO induced the greatest amount of cytotoxicity in a dose-dependent manner; while even high doses (400 μg/cm2) of SiO2 and Fe2O3 were non-toxic …

The Dual Subsidy Theory Of Charitable Deductions, Ilan Benshalom Oct 2009

The Dual Subsidy Theory Of Charitable Deductions, Ilan Benshalom

Indiana Law Journal

Americans contribute billions of dollars to charities on an annual basis. Charitable contributions not only represent American generosity, they also represent a form of giving that provides donors with tax relief The current literature on charitable contributions suggests that this relief plays an important role not only in decentralizing the provision of public goods, but also in helping the nonprofit sector provide public goods more efficiently than government spending. Even if these claims were indisputable, they are insufficient to justify the current scheme's antidemocratic function. This Article argues that, at their core, tax-subsidized contributions are part of a nondemocratic mechanism …

Collaborative Standards, Voluntary Codes And Industry Self-Regulation, Lawrence J. Lad, Craig B. Caldwell Oct 2009

Collaborative Standards, Voluntary Codes And Industry Self-Regulation, Lawrence J. Lad, Craig B. Caldwell

Scholarship and Professional Work - Business

In a complex, global economy, firms seek a range of mechanisms for addressing regulatory and social movement pressures. This requires an evolution beyond our current models of response to regulation and control. This paper offers ideas on collaborative control and industry self-regulation as alternative mechanisms for addressing regulatory complexity. It explores a range of self-regulatory practices worldwide, proposes a framework for examining its use, potential and limits, and discusses the critical role of third-party organisations in the process.

Limiting Anticompetitive Government Interventions That Benefit Special Interests, D. Daniel Sokol Oct 2009

Limiting Anticompetitive Government Interventions That Benefit Special Interests, D. Daniel Sokol

UF Law Faculty Publications

When government regulates, it may either intentionally or unintentionally generate restraints that reduce competition ("public restraints"). Public restraints allow a business to cloak its action in government authority and to immunize it from antitrust regulation. Private businesses may misuse the government's grant of antitrust immunity to facilitate behavior that benefits businesses at consumers' expense. One way is by obtaining government grants of immunity from antitrust scrutiny. A recent series of Supreme Court decisions has made this situation worse by limiting the reach of antitrust law in favor of sector regulation. This is true even though the Supreme Court refers to …

Health And Reproductive Rights In The Protocol To The African Charter: Competing Influences And Unsettling Questions, Rachel Rebouché Oct 2009

Health And Reproductive Rights In The Protocol To The African Charter: Competing Influences And Unsettling Questions, Rachel Rebouché

UF Law Faculty Publications

In 2005, the Protocol to the African Charter on Human and Peoples' Rights on the Rights of Women in Africa (the Protocol) came into force. Since that time, the Protocol has received scant attention in legal scholarship. Where the Protocol has been mentioned, by and large it has received praise as a major step forward for women's rights on the continent. Much of that praise is merited. The Protocol includes broad rights to non-discrimination, equality, and dignity, and it addresses a variety of areas such as labor and employment, marriage and the family, the legal system, the political process and …

Long-Wavelength Structural Anomalies In Jammed Systems, Leo Silbert, Moises Silbert Oct 2009

Long-Wavelength Structural Anomalies In Jammed Systems, Leo Silbert, Moises Silbert

Publications

The structural properties of static, jammed packings of monodisperse spheres in the vicinity of the jamming transition are investigated using large-scale computer simulations. At small wave number k, we argue that the anomalous behavior in the static structure factor, S(k)similar to k, is consequential of an excess of low-frequency, collective excitations seen in the vibrational spectrum. This anomalous feature becomes more pronounced closest to the jamming transition, such that S(0)-> 0 at the transition point. We introduce an appropriate dispersion relation that accounts for these phenomena that leads us to relate these structural features to characteristic length scales associated with …

Networking The Parties: A Comparative Study Of Democratic And Republican Convention Delegates In 2008, Seth E. Masket, Michael T. Heaney, Joanne M. Miller, Dara Z. Strolovich Oct 2009

Networking The Parties: A Comparative Study Of Democratic And Republican Convention Delegates In 2008, Seth E. Masket, Michael T. Heaney, Joanne M. Miller, Dara Z. Strolovich

Working Papers

Parties‐as‐networks is an emerging approach to understanding American political parties as decentralized, nonhierarchical, fluid systems with porous boundaries of a wide array of actors. Parties‐asnetworks include interest groups, social movements, political consultants, and advocacy organizations, in additional to the usual suspects of elected officials, party officials, and citizen‐activists. This approach ameliorates several deficits of the traditional, tripartite view of parties in government, in elections, and as organizations. The authors apply the parties‐as‐networks approach using data from surveys of delegates at the 2008 Democratic and Republican national conventions. Analysis of delegates’ memberships in a wide variety of organizations demonstrates that Democrats …

The Response To Nuclear Proliferation, Annelies Z. Kamran Oct 2009

The Response To Nuclear Proliferation, Annelies Z. Kamran

Working Papers

This paper uses the methods of social network analysis to discover the structural patterns of cooperation that arose in response to a global traditional security problem. It does this by mapping compulsory and institutional power relations (Barnett and Duvall 2005) among actors responding to the proliferation of nuclear weapons since the end of the Cold War. For the institutional power measure, I use treaty and international agreement membership; and for the compulsory power measure, I use contractual obligations for nuclear expertise, materials, and technology. By mapping the relationships at the system level of world politics, including individual states as well …

Georgia State University Law Review

The Bill requires that driver’s license exams be taken only in the English language. An exception is provided for temporary drivers’ licenses, which may be taken in a language other than English. The Bill also requires that defensive driving classes assigned as part of pretrial diversion programs be licensed by the state.

A Venus Of Wild Nights: The Female Nude In Paintings By Judith Linhares, Shannon Egan Oct 2009

A Venus Of Wild Nights: The Female Nude In Paintings By Judith Linhares, Shannon Egan

Art and Art History Faculty Publications

A nude woman sits on a pyramidal assemblage of logs in a pose reminiscent of Auguste Rodin’s The Thinker (1902) in Judith Linhares’s painting Up There (2003). With a delineated but transparent form, an absurdly large bumblebee feeds on enormous flowers at the base of the structure. The female figure oversees the fantastical scene like a queen bee atop a beehive. Linhares revisits the subject of a monumental female nude in her paintings (a traditional subject in the history of painting), and as such, these ‘‘queen bees’’ populate a whimsical but historical world. Her paintings are large, and even in …
