Thomas L. Kane: A Guide To The Sources, David J. Whittaker
BYU Studies
This is a bibliography of published sources on Thomas Leiper Kane, Elizabeth Dennistoun Wood Kane, and Elisha Kent Kane. It appeared in a special issue of BYU Studies that featured Thomas L. Kane and his relationship with members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Later-day Saints. Although Kane was not a member of the LDS church, he was an advocate for the Mormon cause and a trusted friend of Mormon leaders for almost forty years. The bibliography includes the manuscript sources found in the L. Tom Perry Special Collections at Brigham Young University as well as published sources on …

The Impact Of News Coverage On Conflict: Toward Greater Understanding, Richard C. Reuben
The Impact Of News Coverage On Conflict: Toward Greater Understanding, Richard C. Reuben
Faculty Publications
This article develops an approach for the empirical study of the news media’s impact on the conflict that it covers. While mass communications research has studied how the news media covers conflict, it has not taken the next step of assessing the impact of that coverage. This article contends that such an inquiry is necessarily an inter-disciplinary task, and joins conflict theory with mass communications research to identify the kinds of questions that may be empirically tested to determine whether the news media is having a constructive or destructive effect on the conflict that it covers.

Contributing Factors To Pointcut Fragility, Phil Greenwood, Awais Rashid, Raffi Khatchadourian
Contributing Factors To Pointcut Fragility, Phil Greenwood, Awais Rashid, Raffi Khatchadourian
Publications and Research
Pointcut fragility is a well-documented problem of Aspect-Oriented Programming with changes to the base-code causing join points to incorrectly fall in or out of scope. In order to combat this problem a tool was developed that provides mechanical assistance to pointcut maintenance. This tool relied on the deep structural commonalities between program elements to detect when pointcut fragility occurs. During the assessment of this tool a number of common practices were uncovered that were employed both in the aspect and base-code that contributed to or prevented pointcut fragility. This paper documents the practices uncovered and describes how they can affect …

The Impact Of The No Child Left Behind Act On The K-8 Setting, Kara Robertson
Senior Honors Theses
The No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB), which was implemented in 2002, is changing the classroom for teachers and students. The legislation is widely discussed across the nation and people are deciding whether or not this change is suitable for education. The No Child Left Behind Act is affecting the core subjects in the classroom. After evaluating literature on the subject, it is obvious that there are two clear sides to this legislation. There are also actions that can be taken by teachers within the classroom to best utilize NCLB. As a future educator, it is important to evaluate NCLB …

Over the last four decades, electronic games have profoundly changed the way people play, learn, and connect with each other. Despite the tremendous impact of electronic games, however, until recently, relatively few programs existed to preserve them for future generations of players and researchers. Recognizing the need to save the original content and intellectual property of electronic games from media rot, obsolescence, and loss, the Game Preservation Special Interest Group of the International Game Developers Association has issued a white paper summarizing why electronic games should be preserved, problems that must be solved to do so, some potential solutions, and …

Kaleidoscope: A Graduate Journal of Qualitative Communication Research
This paper examines how online participants construct privacy within the digital age by investigating the tools participants implement to assemble the social boundaries of privacy. Group participants vary in their understandings of privacy, creating the potential for privacy violations that may impact both the online as well as offline community. Building upon previous online studies of privacy, this paper informs how group participants construct a contextual understanding of privacy, and how a violation of privacy impacts both offline and online interaction within groups and organizations. Open-ended surveys, public email discussions, personal interviews, and a focus group help explain how organizational …
