Review Of Stansky, Peter, The First Day Of The Blitz: September 7, 1940., James V. Koch Oct 2009

Review Of Stansky, Peter, The First Day Of The Blitz: September 7, 1940., James V. Koch

Economics Faculty Publications

(First Paragraph) Was fall 1940 truly Britain's "finest hour," as Winston Churchill memorably suggested? More particularly, are time-honored stories of stiff-lipped Londoners refusing to buckle under the onslaught of the Luftwaffe on the first day of the Blitz (September 7, 1940) myth or reality? These are the questions Peter Stansky addresses in this well-written, occasionally almost sentimental, essay. He concludes ultimately that the popular version of Blitz history substantially reflects reality, but nevertheless contains many elements of heroic, comforting, and somewhat off-target mythology.

Differential Reliance On Feelings In The Present Vs. The Future (Or Past): Affect As A Decision Making System Of The Present, Hanwen Hannah Chang, Michel Tuan Pham Oct 2009

Differential Reliance On Feelings In The Present Vs. The Future (Or Past): Affect As A Decision Making System Of The Present, Hanwen Hannah Chang, Michel Tuan Pham

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

We posit that compared to the cognitive system, the affective system of judgment and decision making is relatively more engaged in the present. Specifically, we hypothesize that even if their accessibility is held constant, affective feelings are weighted more heavily in consumer judgments and decisions set in the present than in equivalent judgments and decisions set in the future or in the past. Consistent with this proposition, results from six experiments show that (a) compared to a more distant future, a nearer future increases consumers’ relative preferences for options that are superior in terms of integral affect over options that …

Why Os/2 Failed: Business Mistakes Compounded By Memory Prices, Eric G. Swedin Oct 2009

Why Os/2 Failed: Business Mistakes Compounded By Memory Prices, Eric G. Swedin

Mountain Plains Journal of Business and Technology

"In 2006, IBM ended their support of OS/2, closing the book on an ambitious effort to create a modern operating system for the personal computer. IBM and Microsoft released the OS/2 operating system in December 1987 to replace the primitive DOS with a more sophisticated, preemptive multitasking operating system for personal computers. This article argues that OS/2 failed because of the U.S.-Japan Semiconductor Trade Agreement of 1986, subsequent accusations of DRAM chip dumping by the United States, and the resulting tariffs on Japanese memory chips, led to a memory chip shortage that drove up memory prices. OS/2 required substantially more …

Perspectives On The Sources And Eventual Outcome Of The 2008 Economic And Financial Crisis: A Panel Discussion, Stephen T. Evans, David Tufte, Steven D. Harrop, Robb Kerry, Joe G. Baker Oct 2009

Perspectives On The Sources And Eventual Outcome Of The 2008 Economic And Financial Crisis: A Panel Discussion, Stephen T. Evans, David Tufte, Steven D. Harrop, Robb Kerry, Joe G. Baker

Mountain Plains Journal of Business and Technology

"In October 2008 the Southern Utah University School of Business held a panel discussion on the current economic crisis. This discussion was part of the School’s Business Convocation series and was open to the public. The panel was designed with two components in mind. First, a pair of academics with expertise in financial institutions and business cycles offered historical and theoretical perspectives on the crisis. Second, a pair of professionals – a local banking official and a fund manager – offered perspectives on the current financial situation and practical experience based on the policy responses to past crises. As moderator, …

Myths And Realities Of College Retirement, Dennis Vredenburg Oct 2009

Myths And Realities Of College Retirement, Dennis Vredenburg

Mountain Plains Journal of Business and Technology

This paper will discuss the present difficulties being experienced by American college professors with respect to their planning and preparing for retirement. Current macroeconomic conditions are forcing state and institutional budget and program cuts at colleges and universities across the country, increasing job insecurity for many academics. Simultaneously, stock market losses, reductions in the values of real estate, the erosion of the value of personal pensions, and other related challenges are forcing many seasoned American college professors to rethink their retirement plans. Relatively new options exist for today’s academic instructors as well, including not retiring at all, whether for financial …

Same-Sex Relationships And The Full Faith And Credit Clause: Reducing America To The Lowest Common Denominator, Rena M. Lindevaldsen Oct 2009

Same-Sex Relationships And The Full Faith And Credit Clause: Reducing America To The Lowest Common Denominator, Rena M. Lindevaldsen

William & Mary Journal of Race, Gender, and Social Justice

This Article examines the legal and policy implications that arise when a state that expressly prohibits recognition or enforcement of any rights arising from a same-sex relationship is confronted with a request to register and enforce a child custody order issued by another state that gives custody or visitation rights to a biological mother’s former same-sex partner. As more states confer marital rights to same-sex couples, this issue will occur with increasing frequency. The first reported case in the nation to address the issue, Miller-Jenkins v. Miller-Jenkins, has garnered attention from the national media, including a cover story in the …

Analyzing The Video Popularity Characteristics Of Large-Scale User Generated Content Systems, Meeyoung Cha, Haewoon Kwak, Pablo Rodriguez, Yong-Yeol Ahn, Sue Moon

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

User generated content (UGC), now with millions of video producers and consumers, is re-shaping the way people watch video and TV. In particular, UGC sites are creating new viewing patterns and social interactions, empowering users to be more creative, and generating new business opportunities. Compared to traditional video-on-demand (VoD) systems, UGC services allow users to request videos from a potentially unlimited selection in an asynchronous fashion. To better understand the impact of UGC services, we have analyzed the world's largest UGC VoD system, YouTube, and a popular similar system in Korea, Daum Videos. In this paper, we first empirically show …

Roles And Capabilities Of The Retail Supply Chain Organization, C. Clifford Defee, Wesley S. Randall, Brian J. Gibson Oct 2009

Roles And Capabilities Of The Retail Supply Chain Organization, C. Clifford Defee, Wesley S. Randall, Brian J. Gibson

Journal of Transportation Management

Supply chain management (SCM) has become a critical strategic function in recent years. Research in the discipline has been focused toward the upstream side of the supply chain on functions such as warehousing, transportation, procurement and production. As power has shifted downstream toward retailers and their customers, SCM research has been slow to respond. This represents a significant gap, and a significant opportunity. Retailers face challenges that differ from those found in upstream suppliers and manufacturers. We present findings from a study of senior supply chain executives in the retail industry that focuses on the supply chain challenges of greatest …

Butoh, Bodies, And Being, Brianne Waychoff Oct 2009

Butoh, Bodies, And Being, Brianne Waychoff

Kaleidoscope: A Graduate Journal of Qualitative Communication Research

This essay argues for a fluid view of the Japanese avant-garde dance form. Just as butoh resists fixity, this essay is a pastiche of perspectives constituting multiple interpretations of butoh rather than a singular explanation. Through a consideration of Judith Hamera’s 1990 essay “Butoh, Ma, and a Crosscultural Gaze,” coupled with recent popular attention to the form, historical narratives of the Japanese avant-garde and butoh, personal narrative, and reflections provided by butoh performers, this essay opens up alternative ways for thinking about dance practices, and butoh specifically, in performance studies.

Gendered Social Movements: A Critical Comparison Of The Suffrage And Gay Marriage Movements, Michelle L. Kelsey Oct 2009

Gendered Social Movements: A Critical Comparison Of The Suffrage And Gay Marriage Movements, Michelle L. Kelsey

Kaleidoscope: A Graduate Journal of Qualitative Communication Research

The elections of 2008 saw the passage of several overwhelming and explicit condemnations of gay rights across the nation. Most damaging to the gay marriage movement was the successful passage of proposition 8 in California, the first time that the right to gay marriage was repealed. I argue that the continued modeling of the civil rights framework defers an analysis of the argumentative strategies of historically gendered movements such as the suffrage movement and is a disservice to the strategic potential of the marriage equality movement. The critical comparison made here between suffrage and marriage equality opens the potential for …

Generational Perceptions - Workers And Consumers, Arlene J. Nicholas Oct 2009

Generational Perceptions - Workers And Consumers, Arlene J. Nicholas

Faculty and Staff - Articles & Papers

Today’s workers and consumers consist of four generations of individuals raised with very different technologies and lifestyles. According to Murphy (2007), “different perspectives on issues like work ethic, leadership, and authority can cause conflict, frustration, and misunderstanding if not managed well” (p.18). In a recent “World of Work Survey” (2008), the older and younger generations noted little or no interaction with the other. Working with and learning from one another, as well as knowing what appeals to the generations as consumers, is critical for organizations. Understanding these differences will enable improved communications for the workforce and the consumer.

Forensic Bird-Strike Identification Techniques Used In An Accident Investigation At Wiley Post Airport, Oklahoma, 2008, Carla J. Dove, Nor Faridah Dahlan, Marcy Heacker

Human–Wildlife Interactions

On March 4, 2008, a Cessna Citation 1 (Model 500) crashed in a wooded area near Wiley Post Airport, Oklahoma, killing all 5 people on board. This paper describes the detailed forensic methods and expertise used by the Smithsonian Institution’s Feather Identification Lab to identify the bird that caused this bird-strike incident. We used standard methods of whole-feather analysis, microscopic examination, and DNA barcoding in this case to identify American white pelican (Pelecanus erythrorhynchos) as the bird species involved in this fatal crash. We also report the importance of proper field investigation and evidence collection for accurate results, …

Personal And Corporate Liability In The Aftermath Of Bird Strikes: A Costly Consideration, Larry A. Dale Oct 2009

Personal And Corporate Liability In The Aftermath Of Bird Strikes: A Costly Consideration, Larry A. Dale

Human–Wildlife Interactions

This paper details liability issues inherent in bird–aircraft collisions (bird-strike) incidents at airports and discusses how airport managers and operators must strive to conduct accurate assessments and develop and implement an effective wildlife management plan. Such efforts are mandated by Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) regulations, and failure to follow them may result in loss of human life and property, as well as large financial penalties for managers and operators and adverse media attention and public criticism for the airport authority.

Anomalies In Tournament Design: The Madness Of March Madness, Robert Baumann, Victor Matheson, Cara Howe Oct 2009

Anomalies In Tournament Design: The Madness Of March Madness, Robert Baumann, Victor Matheson, Cara Howe

Economics Department Working Papers

Tournament design is of crucial importance in competitive sports. The primary goal of effective tournament design is to provide incentives for the participants to maximize their performance both during the tournament and in the time period leading up to the tournament. In spectator sports, a secondary goal of tournament design is to also promote interesting match ups that generate fan interest. Seeded tournaments, in general, promote both goals. Teams or individuals with strong performances leading up to a tournament receive higher seeds which increase their chances of progressing further in the tournament. Furthermore, seeding ensures that the strongest teams or …
