Assuring Quality In The Delivery Of On-Line Classes, Jane Whitney Gibson, Susan Colaric, Julia Teahen, Michael Nastanski, Regina A. Greenwood
HCBE Faculty Presentations
The symposium participants, all long-time online faculty and administrators, discuss various methods of assuring quality in the delivery of online classes. These methods include standardization of courses, utilizing online protocols for both students and faculty, developing faculty training programs, and reinforcing and evaluating faculty performance through peer mentoring and evaluation. Participants will include real-life experiences with the large online programs at their three institutions. The discussant will pull the symposium together with general comments and suggestions for other quality initiatives. Time for audience participation through a Q & A session will be provided.

E Unibus Plurum: Genomic Analysis Of An Experimentally Evolved Polymorphism In Escherichia Coli, Margie A. Kinnersley, William E. Holben, Frank Rosenzweig
Biological Sciences Faculty Publications
Microbial populations founded by a single clone and propagated under resource limitation can become polymorphic. We sought to elucidate genetic mechanisms whereby a polymorphism evolved in Escherichia coli under glucose limitation and persisted because of cross-feeding among multiple adaptive clones. Apart from a 29 kb deletion in the dominant clone, no large-scale genomic changes distinguished evolved clones from their common ancestor. Using transcriptional profiling on co-evolved clones cultured separately under glucose-limitation we identified 180 genes significantly altered in expression relative to the common ancestor grown under similar conditions. Ninety of these were similarly expressed in all clones, and many of …
Analysis Of A New Modulation/ Multiplexing Technique Using Mutually Orthogonal Chaotic Waveforms, Chaitanya Jidge
Analysis Of A New Modulation/ Multiplexing Technique Using Mutually Orthogonal Chaotic Waveforms, Chaitanya Jidge
Theses
A new digital modulation technique proposed [3] by Dr. Chance M. Glenn is presented and analyzed in this report. The report explains the MOC algorithm as a means of creating information-bearing baseband signals for modulation in digital communications. The process uses the natural diversity of chaotic oscillations. An orthogonal triplet of waveforms is extracted from the oscillations produced by a chaotic process. A simple digital communication system is built, which uses this triplet as basis waveforms to formulate a baseband waveform. There is a lot of research work done and still going on to use chaotic oscillations in the communication …

Torture After Nuremburg: Us Law And Practice, Elizabeth Rapaport
Torture After Nuremburg: Us Law And Practice, Elizabeth Rapaport
Faculty Book Display Case
In this essay I will argue that the signature methods of interrogation used by CIA and military interrogators in the Global War on Terrorism (GWOT) -- torture lite' techniques such as hypothermia and stress positions -- may constitute torture, but that the question of their legality under U.S, and international law is not as straightforward as some critics of the Bush Administration maintained. I will take up only one thread in the complex discussion of GWOT interrogation practices and law, that of the boundary between torture and lesser cruelty.

Minnesota Tuning Project: Biology And Graphic Design, Kristi L. Kremers, Krista M. Soria, Lynn D. Akey
Academic Affairs Publications
Within the tuning methodology, a key step is the utilization of a consultative survey. The objectives established in the Bologna process for the tuning survey “include gleaning current perspectives on the diversity of practice and commonality of knowledge across borders and traditions, and seeking a simple and accessible language to create a scaffolding on which the various degrees can work in comfort and trust” (Adelman, 2009, p. 49). The Minnesota tuning surveys sought the consultation of previous graduates, current students, employers of graduates, and academic faculty for each of the disciplines involved in tuning.

An Anytime Algorithm For Computing Inconsistency Measurement, Yue Ma, Guilin Qi, Guohui Xiao, Pascal Hitzler, Zuoquan Lin
Computer Science and Engineering Faculty Publications
Measuring inconsistency degrees of inconsistent knowledge bases is an important problem as it provides context information for facilitating inconsistency handling. Many methods have been proposed to solve this problem and a main class of them is based on some kind of paraconsistent semantics. In this paper, we consider the computational aspects of inconsistency degrees of propositional knowledge bases under 4-valued semantics. We first analyze its computational complexity. As it turns out that computing the exact inconsistency degree is intractable, we then propose an anytime algorithm that provides tractable approximation of the inconsistency degree from above and below. We show that …

The False Promise Of Adolescent Brain Science In Juvenile Justice, Terry A. Maroney
The False Promise Of Adolescent Brain Science In Juvenile Justice, Terry A. Maroney
Notre Dame Law Review
Recent scientific findings about the developing teen brain have both captured public attention and begun to percolate through legal theory and practice. Indeed, many believe that developmental neuroscience contributed to the U.S. Supreme Court's elimination of the juvenile death penalty in Roper v. Simmons. Post-Roper, scholars assert that the developmentally normal attributes of the teen brain counsel differential treatment of young offenders, and advocates increasingly make such arguments before the courts. The success of any theory, though, depends in large part on implementation, and challenges that emerge through implementation illuminate problematic aspects of the theory. This Article tests the legal …

Rape, Feminism, And The War On Crime, Aya Gruber
Rape, Feminism, And The War On Crime, Aya Gruber
Washington Law Review
Over the past several years, feminism has been increasingly associated with crime control and the incarceration of men. In apparent lock step with the movement of the American penal system, feminists have advocated a host of reforms to strengthen state power to punish gender-based crimes. In the rape context, this effort has produced mixed results. Sexual assault laws that adopt prevailing views of criminality and victimhood, such as predator laws, enjoy great popularity. However, reforms that target the difficulties of date rape prosecutions and seek to counter gender norms, such as rape shield and affirmative consent laws, are controversial, sporadically-implemented, …

Copyright Consultations Submission, Writers Guild Of Canada, Kelly Lynne Ashton
Osgoode Hall Review of Law and Policy
The Writers Guild of Canada (―WGC‖) supports a copyright regime which balances the needs and interests of consumers with the rights and protections of authors. Works should be widely available for use by consumers provided that authors are fairly remunerated for those uses. Rather than criminalize consumers’ actions, the WGC would prefer to see a Copyright Act that pre-authorizes common consumer uses of works in exchange for a revenue stream payable to authors and copyright owners by using the current Private Copying Levy as a model for a more expanded collective licensing scheme. Further, Canada should embrace a National Digital …

Hostile Takeover: The State Of Missouri, The St. Louis School District, And The Struggle For Quality Education In The Inner-City, Justin D. Smith
Missouri Law Review
Missouri has been home to many of the landmark moments in the struggle for racial equality. The Missouri Compromise saved the Union; almost four decades later, the determination that Missouri slave Dred Scott was mere property split the Union. During the Civil War that followed, more battles and skirmishes took place in Missouri than in any other state outside of Virginia and Tennessee. After the Civil War Amendments abolished slavery and guaranteed every person equal protection of the law, the United States Supreme Court allowed a Jefferson City, Missouri, inn to refuse service to blacks. The Court later relied upon …

Why Doctors Shouldn't Practice Law: The American Medical Association's Misdiagnosis Of Physician Non-Complete Causes, Robert Steinbuch
Why Doctors Shouldn't Practice Law: The American Medical Association's Misdiagnosis Of Physician Non-Complete Causes, Robert Steinbuch
Missouri Law Review
This Article proposes that the AMA adopt rules governing restrictive covenants for doctors similar to those already adopted by the ABA for attorneys. The ABA's current rules allow for restrictive covenants in a limited number of situations - including restrictive covenants incident to the sale of a law practice - but specifically prohibit restrictive covenants as a condition to an employment agreement. The ABA's approach is nuanced and equitable. Both the underlying rationales and practical effects of the ABA's current rules governing non-compete clauses in the legal profession serve as persuasive justifications for adopting the same rules in the medical …
