Mechanism Of Nsf: New Evidence Challenging The Prevailing Theory, Ben B. Newton, Phd, Sergio A. Jimenez, Md Nov 2009

Mechanism Of Nsf: New Evidence Challenging The Prevailing Theory, Ben B. Newton, Phd, Sergio A. Jimenez, Md

Scleroderma Center Faculty Papers

Nephrogenic systemic fibrosis (NSF) has been associated with the administration of gadolinium-based contrast agents in patients with severely impaired renal function (SIRF), endstage renal disease (ESRD), or acute renal failure (ARF). Since the vast majority of these patients do not get NSF, it is highly likely that patient factors play a role in its development. Although free or dechelated gadolinium is thought by some to be the only trigger of NSF, recent evidence suggests that chelated gadolinium may be important. Chelated gadolinium such as Omniscan (gadodiamide) and Magnevist (gadopentetate) can directly stimulate macrophages and monocytes in vitro to release profibrotic …

Child Labour: A Public Health Issue, Saleema A. Gulzar, Samina Vertejee, Laila Pirani

School of Nursing & Midwifery

Child labour is a global practice and has many negative outcomes. According to International Labour Organization, child labour is the important source of child exploitation and child abuse in the world today. The Human Rights Commission of Pakistan has estimated the number of Pakistani working children to be around 11-12 millions, out of which, at least, half the children are under the age of ten years. It portrays the society's attitude towards child care. It is therefore, essential to break this vicious cycle and hence, enable the society to produce healthy citizens. This article analyzes the determinants of child labour …

A Mechanism Of Transferring Manufacturing Competences To Increase Market Performance, Kun Liao, Ying Liao, Qiang Tu

Articles

This study uses competence transferring theory to establish a mechanism for transferring competence from the outside of an organization. Data were collected in the US from over 300 manufacturing companies. The mechanism of competence transferring is empirically supported. Also, the transferred competences increase manufacturing process competences including process automation, process integration, and process modularity. Furthermore, the process competences lead to higher market performance of firms.

Optimizing The Release And Methylation Of Bacterial Endospore Dipicolinic Acid, Aaron N. Nackos Nov 2009

Optimizing The Release And Methylation Of Bacterial Endospore Dipicolinic Acid, Aaron N. Nackos

Theses and Dissertations

Rapid, portable detection of biological threat agents such as Bacillus anthracis endospores (“spores”) is extremely important given the real and perceived threats of bioterrorism. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) is an excellent general means for chemical detection, although special sample preparation and specialized equipment are required to employ GC-MS for detecting biological agents such as spores in the field. A GC sample introduction probe consisting of a helical wire that can be retracted inside a syringe needle, called a coiled wire filament (CWF), was employed as a simple, passively-heated means to introduce the mixture of spores plus reagents for thermochemolysis methylation …

Behavior-Based Covert Channel In Cyberspace, Daryl Johnson, Bo Yuan, Peter Lutz Nov 2009

Behavior-Based Covert Channel In Cyberspace, Daryl Johnson, Bo Yuan, Peter Lutz

Presentations and other scholarship

Many covert channels take advantages of weaknesses, flaws, or unused data fields in network protocols. In this paper, a behavior-based covert channel, that takes advantages of behavior of an application, is presented along with a formal definition in the framework of finite state machines. The behavior-based covert channel is application specific and lies at the application layer of the network OSI model, which makes the detection of this type of covert channel much more difficult. A detailed sample implementation demonstrates an example of this type of covert channel in the form of a simple online two-person game. The potential of …

Ethnosymbolism And The Dismemberment Of The State In The Horn Of Africa: The Ethiopian Case Of Ethnic Federalism, Assefa Mehretu Nov 2009

Ethnosymbolism And The Dismemberment Of The State In The Horn Of Africa: The Ethiopian Case Of Ethnic Federalism, Assefa Mehretu

International Conference on African Development Archives

The paper has three major objectives. The first is to do a critical review of the current largely antagonistic narratives of ethnic instrumentalism in Ethiopia and the Horn of Africa that have ultimately led to the balkanization of the state and caused serious political instability and fratricidal conflicts with traumatic and costly consequences in the region. The second is to do a critical review of the policy of the current Ethiopian government to implement ethno-territorial formations under the rubric of killils (Amharic for territorial enclosures), and to demonstrate how this may seriously vitiate national integration along compatible cultural and economic …

An Analysis Of Information Systems Security Management (Issm): The Hierarchical Organizations Vs. Emergent Organization, A.A. Norman, N.M. Yasin

Research Publications (2006 to 2010)

The adoption of Information Systems (IS) in many businesses is at a fast tempo in order to be more competitive. This fast adoption is very much supported by the rapid technology advancement and the increasing demand from business stakeholders. Together with the introduction of the Internet with its remarkable features, plus the free-form of policing practiced make the Internet more attractive and engaging. The only problem is this attraction has become the magnet for the abuser to misuse the Internet for their profit. This problem has led to many Information Security study to combat threats and protect the business. However, …

Oksidentalisme Dalam Sastera Di Malaysia Selepas Merdeka, M.S. Rahamad

Research Publications (2006 to 2010)

Engendering The Nation: Women, Islam, And Poetry In Pakistan, Anita Anantharam Nov 2009

Engendering The Nation: Women, Islam, And Poetry In Pakistan, Anita Anantharam

Journal of International Women's Studies

In this essay I offer some examples of reading feminist agency in Pakistan through an analysis of the poems of two of Pakistan’s preeminent feminist poets, Fahmida Riaz (b.1946) and Kishwar Naheed (b.1940). Rather than gesture to their poetry in a strategy of recuperation I contend that their powerful narratives compel us to reevaluate the parameters of contemporary feminist historiography and discourses of nationalism in South Asia. The poems of Fahmida Riaz and Kishwar Naheed are informed by a different set of paradigms about self and community (Islam) and at the same time reflect an archive (poetry) as crucial to …

An Experimental Study Of Differences In Reading Photo Books By Presentation Media: Print Vs. Screen, Ya-Fang Tsai Nov 2009

An Experimental Study Of Differences In Reading Photo Books By Presentation Media: Print Vs. Screen, Ya-Fang Tsai

Theses

As photography technology changes, the penetration of digital cameras is increasing, especially among young users. Compared to conventional camera users who print most of their images, digital camera users print about one-third of their digital images (PMA, 2009b, p. 10). Moreover, only 5 percent of camera phone users make photo prints (Henning, 2008, p. 4). One popular photo-finishing product is the photo book. The objective of this research was to determine whether people interacted differently with photographic content presented in print versus on screen. This research was focused on: 1. Time spent interacting with photo books. 2. Differences of recall …

Divided At The Margins: A Study Of Young Southern Sudanese Refugee Men In Cairo, Egypt, Natalie I. Forcier

Faculty Journal Articles

This report details a selection of findings on the situation of Southern Sudanese refugee youth at-risk for engaging in violence. Acknowledging that youth violence is not the problem but rather the symptom of underlying social and economic problems, the primary aim of this work was to explore the root causes for young Sudanese men to engage in violence.

Ethnographic data was collected through participant observation from 4 June 2008 to 17 December 2008. Using a series of community entry points, participant observation took place in public or semi-public settings with young men, adult men, young women, and the sisters, mothers …

Edwardsiella Ictaluri Encodes An Acid-Activated Urease That Is Required For Intracellular Replication In Channel Catfish (Ictalurus Punctatus) Macrophages, Natha J. Booth, Judith B. Beekman, Ronald L. Thune Nov 2009

Edwardsiella Ictaluri Encodes An Acid-Activated Urease That Is Required For Intracellular Replication In Channel Catfish (Ictalurus Punctatus) Macrophages, Natha J. Booth, Judith B. Beekman, Ronald L. Thune

Faculty Publications

Genomic analysis indicated that Edwardsiella ictaluri encodes a putative urease pathogenicity island containing the products of nine open reading frames, including urea and ammonium transporters. In vitro studies with wild-type E. ictaluri and a ureG::kan urease mutant strain indicated that E. ictaluri is significantly tolerant of acid conditions (pH 3.0) but that urease activity is not required for acid tolerance. Growth studies demonstrated that E. ictaluri is unable to grow at pH 5 in the absence of urea but is able to elevate the environmental pH from pH 5 to pH 7 and grow when exogenous urea is available. Substantial …

Mechanics-Based Analysis Of Selected Features Of The Exoskeletal Microstructure Of Popillia Japonica, Liang Cheng, Liyun Wang, Anette M. Karlsson Nov 2009

Mechanics-Based Analysis Of Selected Features Of The Exoskeletal Microstructure Of Popillia Japonica, Liang Cheng, Liyun Wang, Anette M. Karlsson

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications

We explore key mechanical responses of the layered microstructure found in selected parts of the exoskeletons (pronotum, leg and elytron) of Popillia japonica (Japanese beetle). Image analyses of exoskeleton cross-sections reveal four distinct layered regions. The load-bearing inner three regions (exocuticle, mesocuticle, and endocuticle) consist of multiple chitin-protein layers, in which chitin fibers align in parallel. The exocuticle and mesocuticle have a helicoidal structure, where the stacking sequence is characterized by a gradual rotation of the fiber orientation. The endocuticle has a pseudo-orthogonal structure, where two orthogonal layers are joined by a thin helicoidal region. The mechanics-based analyses suggest that, …

This submission elucidates 8 basic principles, and 11 pragmatic recommendations to guide copyright reform. Canadian copyright reform is long overdue, especially in comparison to the progress made in other jurisdictions. The modernization proposed herein is in the public interest as it aims to better protect creators‘ rights so as to foster innovation, creativity, competition, and investment and position Canada as a leader in the global, digital economy.

Copyright Consultations Submissions, David Allsebrook Nov 2009

Copyright Consultations Submissions, David Allsebrook

Osgoode Hall Review of Law and Policy

This submission details the reforms that the author believes are necessary in order to ―rationalize‖ the Copyright Act. It attempts to answer five questions which have been posed by the Ministers of Industry and Heritage in connection with the public consultation on the need to ―modernize‖ the Copyright Act. The author is concerned that the ‘modernization‘ that is called for may simply serve to protect powerful interest groups such as the MPAA. A variety of reforms are suggested, including: protection from any form of government censorship; a functional definition of ‘works‘ which focuses on originality, self-expression and fixation; minimum benefit …

Why Canada Should Not Adopt Fair Use: A Joint Submission To The Copyright Consultations, Barry Sookman, Dan Glover Nov 2009

Why Canada Should Not Adopt Fair Use: A Joint Submission To The Copyright Consultations, Barry Sookman, Dan Glover

Osgoode Hall Review of Law and Policy

This submission addresses the issue of fair use, in both the traditional sense, and in the sense of an expanded and more flexible fair dealing regime. Fair use should not be adopted as it leads to uncertainty, expensive litigation, and leaves important public policy decisions to be made by courts instead of Parliament. Further, fair use would reduce revenues available to creators, (which, in turn would reduce the capacity of creators to innovate), while potentially undermining legitimate collective licensing models. Fair use may also be inconsistent with Canada‘s international treaty obligations. Finally, in light of international experience rejecting the adoption …
