Modeling Of Subcontinuum Thermal Transport Across Semiconductor-Gas Interfaces, Dhruv Singh, Xiaohui Guo, Alina A. Alexeenko, Jayathi Y. Murthy, Timothy S. Fisher Jan 2009

Modeling Of Subcontinuum Thermal Transport Across Semiconductor-Gas Interfaces, Dhruv Singh, Xiaohui Guo, Alina A. Alexeenko, Jayathi Y. Murthy, Timothy S. Fisher

School of Aeronautics and Astronautics Faculty Publications

A physically rigorous computational algorithm is developed and applied to calculate subcontinuum thermal transport in structures containing semiconductor-gas interfaces. The solution is based on a finite volume discretization of the Boltzmann equation for gas molecules (in the gas phase) and phonons (in the semiconductor). A partial equilibrium is assumed between gas molecules and phonons at the interface of the two media, and the degree of this equilibrium is determined by the accommodation coefficients of gas molecules and phonons on either side of the interface. Energy balance is imposed to obtain a value of the interface temperature. The classic problem of …

The Effect Of Polydispersivity On The Thermal Conductivity Of Particulate Thermal Interface Materials, Sasanka Kanuparthi, Ganesh Subbarayan, Thomas Siegmund, Bahgat Sammakia Jan 2009

The Effect Of Polydispersivity On The Thermal Conductivity Of Particulate Thermal Interface Materials, Sasanka Kanuparthi, Ganesh Subbarayan, Thomas Siegmund, Bahgat Sammakia

School of Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications

A critical need in developing thermal interface materials (TIMs) is an understanding of the effect of particle/matrix conductivities, volume loading of the particles, the size distribution, and the random arrangement of the particles in the matrix on the homogenized thermal conductivity. Commonly, TIM systems contain random spatial distributions of particles of a polydisperse (usually bimodal) nature. A detailed analysis of the microstructural characteristics that influence the effective thermal conductivity of TIMs is the goal of this paper. Random microstructural arrangements consisting of lognormal size-distributions of alumina particles in silicone matrix were generated using a drop-fall-shake algorithm. The generated microstructures were …

A Homogeneous Architecture For Power Policy Integration In Operating Systems, Nathaniel Pettis, Yung-Hsiang Lu Jan 2009

A Homogeneous Architecture For Power Policy Integration In Operating Systems, Nathaniel Pettis, Yung-Hsiang Lu

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

A significant volume of research has concentrated on operating system (OS)-directed power management. The primary focus of previous research has been the development of better policies. In this paper, we provide evidence that one policy may outperform another under different conditions. Hence, it is difficult, or even impossible, to design the "best" policy for all computers. We explain how to select the best policies at runtime without user or administrator intervention by using a software framework called the Homogeneous Architecture for Power Policy Integration (HAPPI). This architecture is portable across different platforms running Linux. HAPPI specifies common requirements for policies …

Analysis Of The Wicking And Thin-Film Evaporation Characteristics Of Microstructures, R. Ranjan, J. Y. Murthy, S V. Garimella

CTRC Research Publications

The topology and geometry of microstructures play a crucial role in determining their heat transfer performance in passive cooling devices such as heat pipes. It is therefore important to characterize microstructures based on their wicking performance, the thermal conduction resistance of the liquid filling the microstructure, and the thin-film characteristics of the liquid meniscus. In the present study, the free-surface shapes of the static liquid meniscus in common microstructures are modeled using SURFACE EVOLVER for zero Bond number. Four well-defined topologies, viz., surfaces with parallel rectangular ribs, horizontal parallel cylinders, vertically aligned cylinders, and spheres (the latter two in both …

Class Action Arbitration, William H. Baker Jan 2009

Class Action Arbitration, William H. Baker

Cardozo Journal of Conflict Resolution

Class action arbitrations are a relatively recent phenomenon in the United States, but the number of such arbitrations is expanding at a rapid rate. As of August 2008, the American Arbitration Association ("AAA") has administered 246 class action arbitrations and Judicial Arbitration and Mediation Services, Inc. ("JAMS"), another major U.S. arbitral institution, has also administered a substantial number of class arbitrations.

Building The Latin America We Want: Supplementing Representative Democracies With Consensus-Building, Mariana Hernández Crespo Jan 2009

Building The Latin America We Want: Supplementing Representative Democracies With Consensus-Building, Mariana Hernández Crespo

Cardozo Journal of Conflict Resolution

This article is about using consensus-building to create channels for meaningful participation in public decision-making, in order to supplement representative democracies in Latin America. I argue that the addition of a consensus-building mechanism into the legislative process will create the necessary forum for stakeholders to contribute to the framing and resolution of issues of public concern. Furthermore, as Susskind has argued, allowing citizens to participate at the beginning of decision-making processes will make legislative outcomes more legitimate and decrease the level of political dissatisfaction.

This Note will explore the current dispute over Arctic seabed resources surrounding the North Pole, evaluate methods for resolving this conflict, and finally suggest particular Alternative Dispute Resolution ("ADR") methods which would be best suited to resolve the conflict peacefully and equitably. Part II will introduce the appropriate statutory law and discuss its relative effects on the disputing countries. Further, as with most conflicts, it is important to understand how the history of the area impacts the involved countries. This will be assessed in Part III. In Part IV, this Note will show how this particular conflict is better suited …

Bad Medicine: On Disciplining Physician Felons, Milton Heumann, Brian Pinaire, Simon Burger Jan 2009

Bad Medicine: On Disciplining Physician Felons, Milton Heumann, Brian Pinaire, Simon Burger

Cardozo Journal of Conflict Resolution

Perhaps it is the white coat or the degrees encased and mounted on the wall. Perhaps it is the Hippocratic Oath that new physicians recite and that established physicians have putatively internalized over time, or perhaps it is the title, "Doctor," which conjures up images of a stethoscope, a black bag, house calls, nurture, and trust. When we are sick, we head to the doctor. Young children are urged to become doctors. When we watch television or go to the movies doctors are, with certain recent exceptions, portrayed in a positive light as compared to lawyers or politicians. In this …

Judges Gone Wild: Why Breaking The Mediation Confidentiality Privilege For Acting In "Bad Faith" Should Be Reevaluated In Court-Ordered Mandatory Mediation, Samara Zimmerman

Cardozo Journal of Conflict Resolution

This Note focuses on the reasons why a good faith requirement or a bad faith exception for breaking mediation confidentiality is objectionable and offers an alternative for the Florida court system that, if implemented, could mitigate such disadvantages. I will discuss "the intersection between [a] court-ordered mediation, the confidentiality of which is mandated by law ... and the power of a court to control proceedings," and persons who appear before it by sanctioning conduct that taking place in mediation. Part II of this Note will begin by providing a background to the Doe v. Francis civil case. It will highlight …

Investigation Of A Novel Non-Surgical Method Of Artificial Insemination For Sheep, P. H. Purdy, H. D. Blackburn, B. Larson, R. Stobart Jan 2009

Investigation Of A Novel Non-Surgical Method Of Artificial Insemination For Sheep, P. H. Purdy, H. D. Blackburn, B. Larson, R. Stobart

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Transcervical artificial insemination (AI) with sheep is not frequently used in the US due to low fertility rates. Consequently, laparoscopic AI has been employed to circumvent this situation. The problem with this technique is that while it provides satisfactory levels of fertility the degree of technical expertise necessary to perform the procedure, the costs associated with purchasing equipment, and/or the costs of hiring an inseminator are prohibitive for many producers. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to investigate a transcervical method of AI that is nonsurgical, simple to perform, and inexpensive. The estrous cycles of 40 ewes …

Transcript: Workshop On The Future Of The Legal Course Book, Edward Rubin, Kellye Testy, Ronald Collins, David M. Skover

Seattle University Law Review

Most every law school right now is thinking about its curriculum. The Carnegie Report certainly was a big factor in spurring that, although curricular reform is something that law schools, of course, are always engaged in. It moves at a glacial pace sometimes. One of the things that really struck us here at Seattle University, as everyone started to talk about Carnegie and started to talk about curricular reform, is that it was, frankly, a bit of old news to us. Seattle University School of Law has always prided itself on being at the forefront of legal education in many …

Expanding The Crime Of Genocide To Include Ethnic Cleansing: A Return To Established Principles In Light Of Contemporary Interpretations, Micol Sirkin Jan 2009

Expanding The Crime Of Genocide To Include Ethnic Cleansing: A Return To Established Principles In Light Of Contemporary Interpretations, Micol Sirkin

Seattle University Law Review

It may be surprising to discover that ethnic cleansing is legally distinct from genocide considering that the media use these terms interchangeably. Currently, no formal legal definition of ethnic cleansing exists. This Comment specifies how ethnic cleansing fits into the definition of genocide’s distinctly destructive purpose and effect. I argue that because ethnic cleansing and genocide result in similar harms and derive from similar agendas, international courts ought to find perpetrators guilty of the crime of genocide when genocidal acts are committed with the intent to create an ethnically homogenous territory. A policy of ethnic cleansing is a genocidal policy. …

Molecular Diagnostic For Boll Weevil (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) Based On Amplification Of Three Species-Specific Microsatellites, Kyung Seok Kim, Zofia Szendrei, Cesar Rodriguez-Saona, Phillip G. Mulder Jr., Thomas W. Sappington

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

The boll weevil, Anthonomus grandis grandis Boheman (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), is a serious pest of cultivated cotton, Gossypium hirsutum L., in the Americas, and reinfestation of zones from which they have been eradicated is of perpetual concern. Extensive arrays of pheromone traps monitor for reintroductions, but occasionally the traps collect nontarget weevils that can be misidentified by scouts. For example, the congeneric pepper weevil, Anthonomus eugenii Cano, and other superficially similar weevils are attracted to components of the boll weevil lure or trap color. Although morphologically distinguishable by trained personnel, the potential for misidentification is compounded when captured weevils are dismembered …

A Novel Codominant Marker For Selection Of The Null Wx-B1 Allele In Wheat Breeding Programs, Mika Saito, Patricia Vrinten, Goro Ishikawa, Robert A. Graybosch, Toshiki Nakamura Jan 2009

A Novel Codominant Marker For Selection Of The Null Wx-B1 Allele In Wheat Breeding Programs, Mika Saito, Patricia Vrinten, Goro Ishikawa, Robert A. Graybosch, Toshiki Nakamura

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Waxy protein (granule-bound starch synthase I) is a key enzyme in the synthesis of amylose in endosperm tissue. The amylose content of wheat flour plays a significant role in determining Japanese udon noodle quality. Most wheat cultivars suitable for producing udon noodles have a low amylose level due to a lack of Wx-B1 protein conditioned by null Wx-B1 alleles. It was previously determined that the entire coding region of the wheat Wx-B1 gene is deleted in the most common null allele. However, the extent and breakpoints of the deletion have not been established. In this study, the position of the …
