Coiled-Coil-Mediated Dimerization Is Not Required For Myosin Vi To Stabilize Actin During Spermatid Individualization In Drosophila Melanogaster, Tatsuhiko Nogushi, Deborah J. Frank, Mamiko Isaji, Kathryn G. Miller Jan 2009

Coiled-Coil-Mediated Dimerization Is Not Required For Myosin Vi To Stabilize Actin During Spermatid Individualization In Drosophila Melanogaster, Tatsuhiko Nogushi, Deborah J. Frank, Mamiko Isaji, Kathryn G. Miller

Biology Faculty Research

Myosin VI is a pointed-end-directed actin motor that is thought to function as both a transporter of cargoes and an anchor, capable of binding cellular components to actin for long periods. Dimerization via a predicted coiled coil was hypothesized to regulate activity and motor properties. However, the importance of the coiled-coil sequence has not been tested in vivo. We used myosin VI's well-defined role in actin stabilization during Drosophila spermatid individualization to test the importance in vivo of the predicted coiled coil. If myosin VI functions as a dimer, a forced dimer should fully rescue myosin VI loss of function …

In Vivo Function Of Otopetrin 1 In The Vestibular Sensory Epithelium, Euysoo Kim Jan 2009

In Vivo Function Of Otopetrin 1 In The Vestibular Sensory Epithelium, Euysoo Kim

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

Otopetrin family genes encode multi-transmembrane domain proteins with three highly conserved domains. In mice, three Otopetrin paralogues are found. One of its members, Otopetrin 1: Otop1) has been previously shown to be essential for the formation of otoconia in the vestibular system of the inner ear. Otoconia are calcium carbonate biominerals that are required for normal balance and the sensation of linear acceleration with respect to gravity. The mechanism by which OTOP1 mediates otoconia biosynthesis is not known, but the ability of OTOP1 to modulate [Ca2+]i in response to purinergic signals in heterologous systems suggest that OTOP1 may be involved …

Measurement And Modelling Of Structure And Pore Level Processes In Filters And Wicks, John Charles Price Jan 2009

Measurement And Modelling Of Structure And Pore Level Processes In Filters And Wicks, John Charles Price

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences Theses

Characterisation of new filtration and wicking materials through a 'wet-bench" testing process is a requirement for many filtration companies before new products can be released to market. A reduction in this testing commitment through the application of successful computational based models, requiring minimal empirical input, would undoubtedly result in huge financial savings and reductions in testing lead times. Such models could offer total media characterisation and could also aid further insights into many filtration and wicking processes which before would have required an expensive combination of different testing procedures. In this research, a depth filtration model has been developed, based …

An Enhanced -1800-Year Record Of Recent Volcanic Ash-Fall Events For Northern New Zealand From The Analysis Of Cryptotephra, Maria J. Gehrels Jan 2009

An Enhanced -1800-Year Record Of Recent Volcanic Ash-Fall Events For Northern New Zealand From The Analysis Of Cryptotephra, Maria J. Gehrels

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences Theses

The history of volcanic eruptions in North Island, New Zealand, based on the visible stratigraphic record of tephras is not fully representative of the type, frequency and magnitude of eruptions that have occurred in the past or that are likely to occur in the future, Relatively small-scale eruptions from the region's andesitic volcanoes can produce widespread fine tephra falls with considerable impact, such as during recent eruptions of Mt Ruapehu ( 1995-1996) and Mt Ngauruhoe ( 1974-1975), and their threat is therefore likely to be underestimated. The aim of this study was to develop an enhanced stratigraphic record of recent …

Sumbawan Obstetrics: The Social Construction Of Obstetrical Practice In Rural Indonesia, Vanessa Hildebrand Jan 2009

Sumbawan Obstetrics: The Social Construction Of Obstetrical Practice In Rural Indonesia, Vanessa Hildebrand

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

This dissertation examines the ways that the people in the village of Lunyuk, Sumbawa negotiate relationships and identity in their discussions about pregnancy and childbirth. At the center of the analysis are dueling midwives: those with biomedical training: bidan) versus those who use a local indigenous obstetrical knowledge similar to that found in much of Indonesia: dukun bayi). They compete with each other for patients, who are likewise making sense of their position in the world while juggling the pressures from national citizenship, local ethnic membership, Islam, and obstetric knowledge options. Specifically, this dissertation examines how people in this region …

In The Voices Of Men, Beasts, And Gods: Unmasking The Abject Persona In Postwar And Contemporary Japanese Women's Poetry, Lee Friederich Jan 2009

In The Voices Of Men, Beasts, And Gods: Unmasking The Abject Persona In Postwar And Contemporary Japanese Women's Poetry, Lee Friederich

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

This dissertation examines the dramatic use of personae of abjection in the works of contemporary and postwar Japanese women poets Ishigaki Rin: 1920-2004), Tomioka Taeko: b. 1935), Yoshihara Sachiko: 1932-2002), It├┤ Hiromi: b. 1955), and Isaka Yok├┤: b. 1949). Recognizing the strong sense of abjection that permeates postwar and contemporary Japanese poetry in general, I explore the ways in which women poets embody the abject--the fantastically grotesque, the deviant and the mortally wounded--in their poetry. Turning away from the dictates of twentieth century critics that women poets write in a transparently autobiographical mode: primarily about their experiences as wives and …

An Investigation Of Acetobacter Aceti N5-Carboxyaminoimidazole Ribonucleotide Mutase And Its Pure-Purk Operon, Charles Constantine Jan 2009

An Investigation Of Acetobacter Aceti N5-Carboxyaminoimidazole Ribonucleotide Mutase And Its Pure-Purk Operon, Charles Constantine

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

Acetobacter aceti oxidizes ethanol to acetic acid. While the membrane-permeable acetic acid is toxic to many bacteria, A. aceti survives exposure to acetic acid by tolerating cytoplasmic acidification. The ability to tolerate an acidic cytoplasm suggests that proteins from A. aceti are unusually suited to function in an acidic environment. The ability to tolerate an acidic cytoplasm raises additional questions about biosynthetic pathways that employ acid-labile intermediates. To examine how A. aceti metabolism may have adapted to function under acidic conditions, a biosynthetic conversion involving an acid-labile metabolite has been selected for study. The enzyme N5-carboxyaminoimidazole ribonucleotide mutase: PurE) catalyzes …

Supportive Communication, Sense Of Virtual Community And Health Outcomes In Online Infertility Groups, Jennifer L. Welbourne, Anita L. Blanchard, Marla D. Boughton Jan 2009

Supportive Communication, Sense Of Virtual Community And Health Outcomes In Online Infertility Groups, Jennifer L. Welbourne, Anita L. Blanchard, Marla D. Boughton

Management Faculty Publications

Women are turning to online health groups to deal with the stresses and complications of infertility. Online groups may provide a resource that is potentially absent in their face-to-face communities. This study examines how the sense of virtual community (SOVC) that develops in these groups serves as a buffer between perceived stress and physical health symptoms. A sample of 122 women from two virtual communities completed an online survey. Results show that observing the exchange of emotional support was positively related to SOVC while observing informational support was negatively related to SOVC. Further, SOVC was negatively related to physical health …

Batf Regulates Previously Unknown Ap-1 Target Genes To Control Th17 Differentiation, Barbara Schraml Jan 2009

Batf Regulates Previously Unknown Ap-1 Target Genes To Control Th17 Differentiation, Barbara Schraml

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

Activator protein 1: AP-1) transcription factors are dimers of Jun, Fos, musculoaponeurotic fibrosarcoma: MAF) and activating transcription factor: ATF) family proteins that are characterized by a basic region and a leucine zipper domain. While many AP-1 proteins also contain defined transcriptional activation domains: TADs), some consist only of a basic region and leucine zipper and are thought to function as inhibitors of AP-1 activity. We found that the AP-1 protein Batf, which lacks a TAD, is highly expressed in T helper cells compared to various other immune cells and tissues. IL-17-producing T helper: TH17) cells are a CD4+ T cell …

The Development And Testing Of A Relational Model Of Competence In The Context Of Nature-Based Tourism, Christine Marie Oschell Jan 2009

The Development And Testing Of A Relational Model Of Competence In The Context Of Nature-Based Tourism, Christine Marie Oschell

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Communication competence is a framework that has been used in many disciplines to understand communication events and their success or failure in achieving objectives. The model most often used to describe competence is the relational model proposed by Spitzberg & Cupach (1984) which includes three elements: knowledge, knowing what behavior is best suited for a given situation; skill, having the ability to apply that behavior in the given context; and motivation having the desire to communicate in a competent manner. This study used the model of relational competence to understand the communication process between guide and client in a nature-based …

Comparative Study Of Forward And Diffusely Scattered Light In A Coherently Prepared Ultracold Rubidium Gas, Rocio Gisel Olave Gonzalez

Physics Theses & Dissertations

A comparison between forward and diffusely scattered light propagating in a coherently prepared ultracold 87Rb atomic vapor is presented. This research is part of the ongoing effort to characterize the processes, such as diffusion, that contribute to coherence loss in atomic media under conditions of electromagnetically induced transparency, for applications in realistic systems. Toward this end, a magneto optical trap (MOT) of 87Rb has been built, and the atomic vapor sample characterized in terms of atomic density, shape and size, temperature, and optical depth. Next, two co-propagating beams were sent through the sample, to establish an electromagnetically induced …

Gaining Cultural Competency For The Occupational Therapy Student & Clinician On The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Transgender (Lgbt) Population, Lindsey Belzer, Jessa Hulteng Jan 2009

Gaining Cultural Competency For The Occupational Therapy Student & Clinician On The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Transgender (Lgbt) Population, Lindsey Belzer, Jessa Hulteng

Occupational Therapy Capstones

When considering cultural groups, people in the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) population are rarely considered or discussed as a cultural group. For many people, discussion about the LGBT community and sexuality is uncomfortable or often deemed private in order to avoid discussion. Therapists often state "well it's none of my business," but as Harrison (2001) states, it is our job as health professionals to provide therapy settings that are safe for all individuals to openly express themselves. The challenge that arises is in developing a greater understanding around sexual differences in order to be able to provide quality …

Sexualtiy [Sexuality] Resource For Caregivers Of Adolescents With Down Syndrome, Katie Carlson, Karna Plaine Jan 2009

Sexualtiy [Sexuality] Resource For Caregivers Of Adolescents With Down Syndrome, Katie Carlson, Karna Plaine

Occupational Therapy Capstones

The purpose of the scholarly project was to develop a comprehensive sexuality communication tool for developmentally delayed individuals, facilitating problem identification, mutual goal setting, and development of a consistent approach to sexuality intervention across the home and school contexts. The Youth Sexuality Index (YSI) was developed following a thorough literature review of sexuality, sex education, developmental delays, and Down syndrome-related topics. Following the review of literature, the need was identified for a sexuality communication tool for individuals with developmental and cognitive delays. Healthy sexuality is necessary for one to develop self-esteem and experience meaningful relationships. However, lack of communication and …

Free Movement Of Goods And Their Use -- What Is The Use Of It?, Laurence W. Gormley Jan 2009

Free Movement Of Goods And Their Use -- What Is The Use Of It?, Laurence W. Gormley

Fordham International Law Journal

Shortly before the disappearance of the European Community, the European Court of Justice ("ECJ") handed down three judgments on the free movement of goods relating to the use to which goods are put. They are remarkable because they put an end to a serious controversy about the scope of what is now article 34 of the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union ("TFEU") (article 28 of the Treaty Establishing the European Community ("EC Treaty")), which saw a considerable divergence in approach between the Advocates General concerned in these cases. The judgments also surely herald an end to attempts …

Assessing The European Market For Legal Services: Developments In The Free Movement Of Lawyers In The European Union, Julian Lonbay Jan 2009

Assessing The European Market For Legal Services: Developments In The Free Movement Of Lawyers In The European Union, Julian Lonbay

Fordham International Law Journal

This Article focuses on recent developments in European multi-jurisdictional practice rights that have major implications for the control of entry to the legal professions and some of the related deontological rules that govern access to professional legal life across the European Union ("EU") and the European Economic Area ("EEA"). Additionally, it looks at their impact on rules regulating the competence of lawyers and admission to the legal professions, primarily in Europe, but with some reference to the position in the United States as well.

Challenges For The Protection Of Fundamental Rights In The Eu At The Time Of The Entry Into Force Of The Lisbon Treaty, Jacqueline Dutheil De La Rochere Jan 2009

Challenges For The Protection Of Fundamental Rights In The Eu At The Time Of The Entry Into Force Of The Lisbon Treaty, Jacqueline Dutheil De La Rochere

Fordham International Law Journal

Concomitant with the entry into force of the Lisbon Treaty on December 1, 2009, many of the alleged weaknesses of the mechanisms of protection of fundamental rights are in the process of being addressed: the Charter of the Fundamental Rights of the European Union ("Charter") has acquired binding force, the European Union is due to accede to the European Convention of Human Rights, and the Fundamental Rights Agency ("Agency") has been established as a European Union ("EU") body in charge of monitoring the correct implementation of fundamental rights throughout the Union. This Essay will address three main questions. First, a …

Water Federalism And The Army Corps Of Engineers' Role In Eastern States Water Allocation, Robert Haskell Abrams Jan 2009

Water Federalism And The Army Corps Of Engineers' Role In Eastern States Water Allocation, Robert Haskell Abrams

Journal Publications

It is black letter constitutional theory that the several states are the masters of their property law, and hence their water law. For that reason, states have been free to adopt regimes as widely different as reasonable use riparianism and prior appropriation, depending on local conditions and perceived needs. Superimposed on the same physical water resource network, is the United States Army Corps of Engineers (Corps). The presence of Corps' facilities in basins now experiencing short supply opens the door to state and federal water allocation conflict that calls for mediation under the principles of water federalism, a doctrine that …

You Can't Always Get What You Want, But If You Try Sometimes You Can Steal It And Call It Fair Use: A Proposal To Abolish The Fair Use Defense For Music, William Henslee Jan 2009

You Can't Always Get What You Want, But If You Try Sometimes You Can Steal It And Call It Fair Use: A Proposal To Abolish The Fair Use Defense For Music, William Henslee

Journal Publications

The fair use doctrine in copyright has become the excuse for every creatively challenged author who gets caught using someone else's intellectual property without paying for it and tries to pass it off as his or her own. Fair use has also become the means to use someone else's work for purposes unrelated to the original without paying for the use.

While there are scholars who believe fair use should be more widely applicable than it already is, this Article will discuss how the fair use defense in music has been expanded far beyond the original legislative intent and has …

Kidney Transplantation: Only For The Well-To-Do?, Jennifer M. Smith Jan 2009

Kidney Transplantation: Only For The Well-To-Do?, Jennifer M. Smith

Journal Publications

The world of organ transplantation remains a wealthy one, especially in the United States. This is especially true for kidney transplantations, which involve the solid organ most in demand. Increasingly, transplant professionals desperately push for more solutions to overcome the organ transplant shortage that exists in the United States. Congress has introduced legislation that addresses the additional problem of the high cost of post-transplant anti-rejection medications by providing that the government will pay eighty percent of the cost for the post-transplant medications for life. But unless this bill passes and other needed changes are made, kidney transplantation remains an option …

A Confused Concern Of The First Amendment: The Uncertain Status Of Constitutional Protection For Individual Academic Freedom, Neal H. Hutchens

Educational Policy Studies and Evaluation Faculty Publications

The question of whether the First Amendment protects the individual academic freedom of faculty members at public colleges and universities has resulted in divergent views among courts and legal scholars. In joining the ongoing discourse regarding constitutional protection for academic freedom, this article considers using academic freedom policies and standards voluntarily adopted by institutions as a basis to provide First Amendment protection for faculty speech at public colleges and universities. The article proposes that such policies present one alternative to help clear some of the legal fog regarding First Amendment protection for individual academic freedom, especially in relation to the …

Now You See It Now You Don't: Addressing The Issue Of Websites Which Are "Lost In Space", Patricia A. Broussard

Journal Publications

This article asks the following question: should the average law professor, who works mightily to churn out a large journal article every two years or so, be penalized for relying heavily on Internet citations provided full and accurate credit is given to all sources? I believe that in order to attempt to answer this question, it is important to first examine the roots of scholarship in academia and revisit its original purpose and second, to discuss the rise of technology and the impact it has had on the academy. This article will eventually set out some guidelines for the use …
