Language, Culture, Perception And Knowledge, Alfredo Hernandez Corsen

McNair Scholars Journal

The complexity of our diverse communities requires us to reflect on pre-conceived notions of understanding that shape worldviews. This project examines approaches that exclude divergent perspectives, while promoting intolerant ideologies that limit our possibilities for shared learning. It also explores crucial elements that shape our understanding in an effort to expose the limitations created by absolute frames of mind. This research involves an analysis of scientific and religious fundamentalist outlooks that negate vital opportunities for discovery through mutual collaboration and the acknowledgment of exclusive and incomplete perspectives that discourage and undervalue diversity.

The Effect Of A Back-To-Basics Core Academic Program Compared To A Traditional Academic Program On Participating 4th-Grade Students’ Achievement And Perceptions Of Life Skills, Paula A. Peal

Student Work

Study results indicate that 3rd-grade to 4th-grade same school Core Academy Program and Traditional Academic Program learning experiences resulted in numerical equipoise for norm referenced reading, math, social studies, and science test score results. Randomly assigned Core Academy Program students' ( n = 16) norm referenced language NCE posttest scores were statistically significantly greater following participation than the naturally formed group of students (n = 16) following participation in the Traditional Academic Program. Core Academy Program students' criterion referenced writing and math cutscores were also statistically greater at posttest. Finally, the teacher life skills perceptions awarded to students were …

St. Mary's Law Journal

Attorney loyalty to clients is considered a cornerstone of the attorney-client relationship. Yet, loyalty is underexplored, misunderstood, and the subject of heated discord. Advocates of client-centered loyalty and their opponents both fail to provide a compelling accounting of loyalty to clients and its consequences. Leaving loyalty in limbo is an unacceptable state of affairs. The legal profession bears the continuous burden of accounting for its own practices. Because the Bar cannot assert broad client-centered loyalty as self-explanatory, the burden of disproving loyalty shifts to the critics. Antitrust law confronted the challenges of regulating interoperability between platforms and applications in both the AT&T and Microsoft cases, but it has yet to mine the series of lessons that can inform how to address this challenge going forward. Over the past several years, feminism has been increasingly associated with crime control and the incarceration of men. In apparent lock step with the movement of the American penal system, feminists have advocated a host of reforms to strengthen state power to punish gender-based crimes. In the rape context, this effort has produced mixed results. Sexual assault laws that adopt prevailing views of criminality and victimhood, such as predator laws, enjoy great popularity. However, reforms that target the difficulties of date rape prosecutions and seek to counter gender norms, such as rape shield and affirmative consent laws, are controversial, sporadically-implemented, …

While prior research exists that high schools need to make changes to meet the needs of the students of the 21st Century, no research exists from the perspective of the teacher who must implement the changes. This qualitative study provides a comparison of two rural model 21st Century high schools in West Virginia, both members of the High Schools That Work network, and factors that impacted their initial benchmarking of 21st Century through a cross case analysis.
