Quo Vadis Face Recognition: Spectral Considerations, Stefan Robila Sep 2009

Quo Vadis Face Recognition: Spectral Considerations, Stefan Robila

Department of Computer Science Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

The paper provides novel approaches for the employment of spectral information when pursuing face recognition. We designed and tested Eigenface based algorithms that improve face recognition through feature extraction, i.e. extracting the 'best bands' according to various criteria such as decorelation and statistical independence. Eigenfaces correspond to principal components and have previously been used for regular grayscale and color images. In this paper we expand theiruse to hyperspectral imagery, i.e. data sets of images of the same scene associated to narrow wavelength intervals. Our approach is a two decomposition process. In the first, the hyperspectral data is reduced to grayscale …

Pore Size Characterization Of Monolithic Capillary Columns Using Capillary Flow Porometry, Yan Fang Sep 2009

Pore Size Characterization Of Monolithic Capillary Columns Using Capillary Flow Porometry, Yan Fang

Theses and Dissertations

A simple capillary flow porometer (CFP) was assembled for pore structure characterization of monolithic capillary liquid chromatography columns based on ASTM standard F316-86. Determination of differential pressures and flow rates through dry and wet samples provided the necessary information to determine the through-pore throat diameter, bubble point pore diameter, mean flow pore diameter, and pore distribution. Unlike measurements in bulk using traditional techniques to provide indirect information about the pore properties of monolithic columns, monoliths can be characterized in their original chromatographic forms with this system. The performance of the new CFP was first evaluated by characterizing the pore size …

Literary Bodies: The Novel As Experience, Britt Dienes Sep 2009

Literary Bodies: The Novel As Experience, Britt Dienes

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

For my MA thesis I propose to examine a series of novels that combine motifs of the body with structural and linguistic experimentation that parallels the state of the bodies within the text. Using Tsitsi Dangarembga's 1988 "bodybildungsroman" Nervous Conditions, Sherley Anne Williams' 1986 neo -slave narrative Dessa Rose, Samuel Beckett's 1938 existential novel Murphy, Vikram Seth's 1986 poetic novel Golden Gate, and Vladimir Nabokov's 1962 poetic novel Pale Fire, I will argue that these texts portray the body as a readable space of culture, a legible site of conflict or creation.

I contend that these novels …

The Α,Α-Difluorinated Phosphonate L-Pser-Analogue: An Accessible Chemical Tool For Studying Kinase-Dependent Signal Transduction In Vitro, And In Living Cells, Kaushik Panigrahi, Marijean Eggen, Jun-Ho Maeng, Quanrong Shen, David B. Berkowitz

David Berkowitz Publications

This overview focuses on the (α,α-difluoromethylene)phosphonate mimic of phosphoserine (pCF2Ser) and its application to the study of kinase-mediated signal transduction – pathways of great interest to drug development. The most versatile modes of access to these chemical biological tools are discussed, organized by method of PCF2-C bond. The pCF2-Ser mimic may be site-specifically incorporated into peptides (SPPS) and proteins (expressed protein ligation). This isopolar, dianionic pSer mimic results in a “constitutive phosphorylation” phenotype, and is seen to support native protein-protein interactions that depend upon serine phosphorylation. Signal transduction pathways studied with this chemical biological …

Perturbed S3 Neutrinos, Joseph Schechter, Renata Jora, M. Naeem Shahid

Physics - All Scholarship

We study the effects of the perturbation which violates the permutation symmetry of three Majorana neutrinos but preserves the well known (23) interchange symmetry. This is done in the presence of an arbitrary Majorana phase which serves to insure the degeneracy of the three neutrinos at the unperturbed level.

Geometry Of L₁(Μ) For Vector-Valued Measure, Part I, Iwo Labuda Sep 2009

Geometry Of L₁(Μ) For Vector-Valued Measure, Part I, Iwo Labuda

Analysis Seminar

Let μ be a measure from a σ-algebra of subsets of a set into a sequentially complete Hausdorff topological vector space . Assume that the convex hull of the range of μ is bounded in and denote by L₁(μ) the space of scalar-valued functions on that are integrable with respect to the vector measure μ. Sometimes a property of is inherited by L₁(μ). I will show that the bounded multiplier property passes from to L₁(μ). Answering a 1972 question of Erik Thomas, I will show that for a large class of F-spaces , the non-containment …

Space Science Center

SONNE, the SOlar NeutroN Experiment proposed for Solar Probe Plus, is designed to measure solar neutrons from 1-20 MeV and solar gammas from 0.5-10 MeV. SONNE is a double scatter instrument that employs imaging to maximize its signal-to-noise ratio by rejecting neutral particles from non-solar directions. Under the assumption of quiescent or episodic small-flare activity, one can constrain the energy content and power dissipation by fast ions in the low corona. Although the spectrum of protons and ions produced by nanoflaring activity is unknown, we estimate the signal in neutrons and γ−rays that would be present within thirty solar radii, …

We report on a matched-filter search for gravitational wave bursts from cosmic string cusps using LIGO data from the fourth science run (S4) which took place in February and March 2005. No gravitational waves were detected in 14.9 days of data from times when all three LIGO detectors were operating. We interpret the result in terms of a frequentist upper limit on the rate of gravitational wave bursts and use the limits on the rate to constrain the parameter space (string tension, reconnection probability, and loop sizes) of cosmic string models. Many grand unified theory-scale models (with string tension Gμ/c2≈10-6) …

An Oosterhoff Analysis Of The Galactic Bulge Field Rr Lyrae Stars: Implications On Their Absolute Magnitudes, Andrea Kunder, Brian Chaboyer

Dartmouth Scholarship

We present an analysis of the period-V-amplitude plane for RR0 Lyrae stars (fundamental mode pulsators) with "normal" light curves in the bulge using the MACHO bulge fields. Although bulge globular clusters (GCs) have RR Lyraes that divide into two reasonable distinct groups according to the average period of the RR0 Lyraes, there is no evidence of a gap between Oosterhoff I (OoI) and II (OoII) stars in the bulge field star sample. The majority of the bulge RR0 Lyrae field star population have a difference in period compared to the OoI cluster M3 (Δlog P) that is …

Deriving The Radial Distances Of Wide Coronal Mass Ejections From Elongation Measurements In The Heliosphere - Application To Cme-Cme Interaction, Noe Lugaz, Angelos Vourlidas, Ilia I. Roussev

Coronal Mass Ejection Research Group

We present general considerations regarding the derivation of the radial distances of coronal mass ejections (CMEs) from elongation angle measurements such as those provided by SECCHI and SMEI, focusing on measurements in the Heliospheric Imager 2 (HI-2) field of view (i.e. past 0.3 AU). This study is based on a three-dimensional (3-D) magneto-hydrodynamics (MHD) simulation of two CMEs observed by SECCHI on 24–27 January 2007. Having a 3-D simulation with synthetic HI images, we are able to compare the two basic methods used to derive CME positions from elongation angles, the so-called "Point-P" and "Fixed-φ" approximations. We confirm, following similar …
