Beam Spin Asymmetries In Deeply Virtual Compton Scattering (Dvcs) With Clas At 4.8 Gev, G. Gavalian, Gerard P. Gilfoyle, Et. Al.

Physics Faculty Publications

We report measurements of the beam spin asymmetry in deeply virtual Compton scattering (DVCS) at an electron beam energy of 4.8 GeV using the CLAS detector at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility. The DVCS beam spin asymmetry has been measured in a wide range of kinematics, 1.0 < Q2 < 2.8 (GeV/c)2, 0.12 < xB < 0.48, and 0.1 < −t < 0.8 (GeV/c)2, using the reaction ep → e' p X. The number of H(e, e' γ p) and H(e, e'π0p) events are separated in each (Q2, xB, t …

Practice Teaching In Urban Schools: The Effectiveness Of Special Education Preclinical Experience In Urban School Settings, Myung-Sook Koh Sep 2009

Practice Teaching In Urban Schools: The Effectiveness Of Special Education Preclinical Experience In Urban School Settings, Myung-Sook Koh

The Scholarship of Teaching and Learning at EMU

Myung-sook Koh's contribution to this volume wrestles with an important issue in teacher education. Teacher education students at Eastern Michigan University get very little, if any, experience teaching in urban schools; furthermore, students not majoring in special education rarely gain direct experience working with this population, although the inclusive classrooms they will face as teachers likely will present them with special education students. This chapter details Myung-sook's work in getting her students into inner city schools as part of their field experience as preservice teachers, and examines student reactions to this important activity.

As the core of this project, of …

Matlab As A Tool To Increase The Math Self-Confidence And The Math Ability Of First-Year Engineering Technology Students, Mary L. Brake Sep 2009

Matlab As A Tool To Increase The Math Self-Confidence And The Math Ability Of First-Year Engineering Technology Students, Mary L. Brake

The Scholarship of Teaching and Learning at EMU

Mary Brake's chapter details her efforts to introduce a computational software package (Mathlab) in her Introduction to Engineering Technology course. Mary started off her scholarship of teaching and learning project interested in why women and minorities tend to drop out of engineering programs nationwide; she anticipated it is caused by lack of confidence these students have that they can "make it" in such a program. Along the way, Mary's focus widened as she discovered that the problem may not exactly be lack of confidence; her students continued to feel their ability to solve complex problems even in the face of …

Guided Inquiry Animations In General Chemistry, Larry Kolopajlo Sep 2009

Guided Inquiry Animations In General Chemistry, Larry Kolopajlo

The Scholarship of Teaching and Learning at EMU

Many people have nightmares about their undergraduate chemistry experiences. I suspect, though, that if Larry Kolopajlo had been our teacher, this would not be the case. Larry's work in this chapter is motivated by his desire to see students achieve mastery in this challenging subject. Larry has developed an impressive collection of computerized animations that, for example, show students the movement of atoms in chemical reactions. By being able to observe what previously had been hidden aspects of the subject, students should be able to gain a deeper understanding of what is going on. This should help the students to …

Robustness Of Semiparametric Efficiency In Nearly-Correct Models For Two-Phase Samples, Thomas Lumley Sep 2009

Robustness Of Semiparametric Efficiency In Nearly-Correct Models For Two-Phase Samples, Thomas Lumley

UW Biostatistics Working Paper Series

Augmented inverse-probability weighted (AIPW) estimators for incomplete-data models typically do not have full semiparametric efficiency, but do have model-robustness properties not shared by the efficient estimator. We examine the performance of efficient and AIPW estimators when the complete-data model is nearly correctly specified, in the sense that the misspecification is not reliably detectable from the data by any possible diagnostic or test. Asymptotic results for these nearly true models are obtained by representing them as sequences of misspecified models that are mutually contiguous with a correctly specified model. For some least favorable direction of model misspecification the bias in the …

Geometric Characterization Of Digital Objects: Algorithms And Applications To Image Analysis., Arindam Biswas Dr. Sep 2009

Geometric Characterization Of Digital Objects: Algorithms And Applications To Image Analysis., Arindam Biswas Dr.

Doctoral Theses

Several problems of characterizing a digital object, and particularly, those related to boundary description, have been studied in this thesis. New algorithms and their applications to various aspects of image analysis and retrieval have been reported. A combinatorial technique for constructing the outer and inner isothetic covers of a digital object has been developed. The resolution of the background 2D grid can be changed by varying the grid spacing, and this procedure can be used to extract shape and topological information about the object. Next, an algorithm has been designed for constructing the orthogonal (convex) hull of a digital object …

Tracking Rhythmicity In Biomedical Signals Using Sequential Monte Carlo Methods, Sungan Kim Sep 2009

Tracking Rhythmicity In Biomedical Signals Using Sequential Monte Carlo Methods, Sungan Kim

Dissertations and Theses

Cyclical patterns are common in signals that originate from natural systems such as the human body and man-made machinery. Often these cyclical patterns are not perfectly periodic. In that case, the signals are called pseudo-periodic or quasi-periodic and can be modeled as a sum of time-varying sinusoids, whose frequencies, phases, and amplitudes change slowly over time. Each time-varying sinusoid represents an individual rhythmical component, called a partial, that can be characterized by three parameters: frequency, phase, and amplitude. Quasi-periodic signals often contain multiple partials that are harmonically related. In that case, the frequencies of other partials become exact integer multiples …

Stormwater Irrigation Volume Iii: Transport Of The Cyanotoxin Microcystin In Groundwater Beneath Stormwater Ponds: Results Of Soil Column Experiments, Martin Wanielista

BMP Trains Research and Publications

As the demand for fresh water increases in central Florida to meet both public supply and irrigation needs, stormwater is increasingly being managed as a resource to help offset possible future declines in aquifer water levels. Water quality is an important consideration when using stormwater for recharge or harvesting. A constituent of recent concern is cyanobacteria (popularly known as blue-green algae) because some of these can produce toxins (cyanotoxins) that are detrimental to animal and human health. Microcystins are the most commonly found type of cyanotoxin in Florida and have been detected in a variety of rivers, natural lakes, and …

Super-Relaxed (Η)-Proximal Point Algorithms, Relaxed (Η)-Proximal Point Algorithms, Linear Convergence Analysis, And Nonlinear Variational Inclusions, Ram U. Verma, Ravi P. Agarwal Sep 2009

Super-Relaxed (Η)-Proximal Point Algorithms, Relaxed (Η)-Proximal Point Algorithms, Linear Convergence Analysis, And Nonlinear Variational Inclusions, Ram U. Verma, Ravi P. Agarwal

Mathematics and System Engineering Faculty Publications

We glance at recent advances to the general theory of maximal (set-valued) monotone mappings and their role demonstrated to examine the convex programming and closely related field of nonlinear variational inequalities. We focus mostly on applications of the super-relaxed (η)-proximal point algorithm to the context of solving a class of nonlinear variational inclusion problems, based on the notion of maximal (η)-monotonicity. Investigations highlighted in this communication are greatly influenced by the celebrated work of Rockafellar (1976), while others have played a significant part as well in generalizing the proximal point algorithm considered by Rockafellar (1976) to the case of the …

Extracting Black Hole Physics From The Lattice, Simon Catterall, Toby Wiseman Sep 2009

Extracting Black Hole Physics From The Lattice, Simon Catterall, Toby Wiseman

Physics - All Scholarship

We perform lattice simulations of N D0-branes at finite temperature in the decoupling limit, namely 16 supercharge SU(N) Yang-Mills quantum mechanics in the 't Hooft limit. At low temperature this theory is conjectured to be dual to certain supergravity black holes. We emphasize that the existence of a non-compact moduli space renders the partition function of the quantum mechanics theory divergent, and we perform one loop calculations that demonstrate this explicitly. In consequence we use a scalar mass term to regulate this divergence and argue that the dual black hole thermodynamics may be recovered in the appropriate large N limit …

Causal Inference For Nested Case-Control Studies Using Targeted Maximum Likelihood Estimation, Sherri Rose, Mark J. Van Der Laan Sep 2009

Causal Inference For Nested Case-Control Studies Using Targeted Maximum Likelihood Estimation, Sherri Rose, Mark J. Van Der Laan

U.C. Berkeley Division of Biostatistics Working Paper Series

A nested case-control study is conducted within a well-defined cohort arising out of a population of interest. This design is often used in epidemiology to reduce the costs associated with collecting data on the full cohort; however, the case control sample within the cohort is a biased sample. Methods for analyzing case-control studies have largely focused on logistic regression models that provide conditional and not marginal causal estimates of the odds ratio. We previously developed a Case-Control Weighted Targeted Maximum Likelihood Estimation (TMLE) procedure for case-control study designs, which relies on the prevalence probability q0. We propose the use of …
