Voshm: A Velocity Optimized Seamless Handover Mechanism For Wimax Networks, Chi Ma, Enda Fallon, Yansong Qiao

9th. IT & T Conference

For seamless handover in heterogeneous wireless networks, service continuity and minimal handover disruption time are the primary requirements. The emerging Media Independent Handover (MIH) standard proposes to address these requirements through the introduction of link performance prediction features. In particular the MIH Event Service introduces a Link_Going_Down event which utilizes L2 performance characteristics to trigger predictive events. While the MIH standard proposes a framework by which L2 events can be communicated to the upper layer, it does provide detail on the performance characteristics which trigger these events. In this paper, we design a MIH based Velocity Optimized Seamless Handover Mechanism …

Intelligent Virtual Agent: Creating A Multi-Modal 3d Avatar Interface, Mark Dunne, Brian Mac Namee, John D. Kelleher

9th. IT & T Conference

Human-computer interactions can be greatly enhanced by the use of 3D avatars, representing both human users and computer systems in 3D virtual spaces. This allows the human user to interface with the computer system in a natural and intuitive human-to-human dialog (human face-to-face conversation). Hence, continuing to blur the boundaries between the real and virtual worlds. This proposed avatar system will go a step further and will use a camera to track the user’s head and eye movements during the dialog. This information will help to build rapport between the user and computer system by registering the user’s emotional state …

Nonlinear Power Spectrum In The Presence Of Massive Neutrinos: Perturbation Theory Approach, Galaxy Bias, And Parameter Forecasts, Shun Saito, Masahiro Takada, Atsushi Taruya

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Future or ongoing galaxy redshift surveys can put stringent constraints on neutrinos masses via the high-precision measurements of galaxy power spectrum, when combined with CMB information. In this paper we develop a method to model galaxy power spectrum in the weakly nonlinear regime for a mixed dark matter [cold dark matter (CDM) plus finite-mass neutrinos] model, based on perturbation theory (PT) whose validity is well tested by simulations for a CDM model. In doing this we carefully study various aspects of the nonlinear clustering (nonlinear neutrino perturbations and the higher-order growth functions), and then arrive at a useful approximation allowing …

Management And Disaster, Eugene Soraghan Oct 2009

Management And Disaster, Eugene Soraghan

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

The purpose of this paper is to determine the effect management has on disaster response and recovery. Specifically, the investigation will determine what management model or methodology seems to produce the greatest effect when preparing for, reacting to, and recovering from a disaster. Any firm with a managerial hierarchy utilizes some methodology or model to organize and oversee its personnel and operations, even if this model may not be consciously recognized by the organization, escape a direct association with a theory, or lack a proper name. While these models may prove effective at internal regulation and profit realization, they consistently …

A New Look At Training Motivation: A Meta-Analytic Investigation Of Differential And Incremental Validity, Kristina N. Bauer Oct 2009

A New Look At Training Motivation: A Meta-Analytic Investigation Of Differential And Incremental Validity, Kristina N. Bauer

Psychology Theses & Dissertations

The extant training and educational research has not been consistent in the way motivation is measured in the context of training. Prior research has examined different types of motivation (i.e., intrinsic motivation, motivation to leam, motivation to transfer, expectancy motivation, and task value) and different timings of measurement (i.e., pretraining, during, and post-training). Accordingly, the present meta-analysis sought to elucidate the relationships between training motivation and training outcomes via three contributions: (I) examining differential relationships with four training outcomes; (2) assessing incremental validity over and above each other to the prediction of these training outcomes; and (3) investigating whether the …

Development Of Chemometric Models And Calibration Transfer For Rapid Diesel And Jet Fuel Analysis Using Near Infrared Spectroscopy, Christopher Matthew Larkin

Chemistry & Biochemistry Theses & Dissertations

Fuel quality assurance and analysis, as it pertains to the United States armed forces, is crucial for maintaining operability and upholding safety regulations with respect to fuel class. Currently a great amount of effort, money and manpower are dedicated to this task as fuel analysis takes place in off-site laboratories where quality assessment and property determination is performed manually by highly qualified lab technicians. This presents the military with a logistics problem with respect to refueling, transport, and fuel storage as the typical tum-around time is 1-2 weeks. In this thesis it has been demonstrated that near-infrared spectroscopy, in conjunction …

An Error Threshold Criterion For Singular Value Decomposition Modes Extracted From Piv Data, Brenden P. Epps Oct 2009

An Error Threshold Criterion For Singular Value Decomposition Modes Extracted From Piv Data, Brenden P. Epps

Link Foundation Ocean Engineering and Instrumentation Fellowship Reports

Singular value decomposition (SVD) is often used as a tool to analyze particle image velocimetry (PIV) data. However, experimental error tends to corrupt higher SVD modes, in which the root mean square velocity value is smaller than the experimental error. Therefore, we suggest that the threshold criterion, sk [ ffiffiffiffiffiffiffi DT p ; can be used as a rough limit of the validity of SVD modes extracted from experimental data (where sk is the singular value of mode k, D and T are the number of data sites and time steps, respectively, and is the root mean square PIV error). …

Lipid-Protein Interactions Probed By Electron Crystallography, Steve L. Reichow, Tamir Gonen Oct 2009

Lipid-Protein Interactions Probed By Electron Crystallography, Steve L. Reichow, Tamir Gonen

Chemistry Faculty Publications and Presentations

Electron crystallography is arguably the only electron cryomicroscopy (cryoEM) technique able to deliver an atomic-resolution structure of membrane proteins embedded in the lipid-bilayer. In the electron crystallographic structures of the light driven ion pump, bacteriorhodopsin, and the water channel, aquaporin-0, sufficiently high resolution was obtained and both lipid and protein were visualized, modeled and described in detail. An extensive network of lipid-protein interactions mimicking native membranes is established and maintained in two-dimensional (2D) crystalline vesicles used for structural analysis by electron crystallography. Lipids are tightly integrated into the protein's architecture where they can affect the function, structure, quaternary assembly and …

Nanoscale Domain Patterns In Ultrathin Polymer Ferroelectric Films, Pankaj Sharma, Timothy J. Reece, Daniel W. Wu, Vladimir M. Fridkin, Stephen Ducharme, Alexei Gruverman Oct 2009

Nanoscale Domain Patterns In Ultrathin Polymer Ferroelectric Films, Pankaj Sharma, Timothy J. Reece, Daniel W. Wu, Vladimir M. Fridkin, Stephen Ducharme, Alexei Gruverman

Stephen Ducharme Publications

High-resolution studies of domain configurations in Langmuir–Blodgett films of ferroelectric polymer poly(vinylidene fluoride-trifluoroethylene), P(VDF-TrFE), have been carried out by means of piezoresponse force microscopy (PFM). Changes in film thickness and morphology cause significant variations in polarization patterns. In continuous films and nanomesas with relatively low thickness/grain aspect ratio (<1/10), the relationship between the average domain size and thickness follows the Kittel law. Nanomesas with high aspect ratio (>1/5) exhibit significant deviations from this law, suggesting additional surface-energy-related mechanisms affecting the domain patterns. Polarization reversal within a single crystallite has been demonstrated and local switching parameters (coercive voltage and remnant piezoresponse) have been measured by monitoring the local hysteresis loops. Reliable control of polarization at the sub-grain level demonstrates …

Observations Of Neck-Collared Canada Geese Near John F. Kennedy International Airport, New York, Thomas W. Seamans, Scott E. Clemons, Allen L. Gosser

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Canada geese (Branta canadensis) often cause significant damage when they strike aircraft. They are responsible for a reported minimum of $2.6 million in damage per year to civil aviation in the United States. Knowledge of goose movements in relation to airports would allow wildlife managers to allocate time and funds to manage those populations that pose the greatest threat to aircraft. We placed alpha-numeric neck collars on 300 Canada geese within 8 km of both John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFKIA) and LaGuardia Airport in New York, New York. We conducted weekly observations for 2 years within a …

Digital Logic Based Encoding Strategies For Steganography On Voice-Over-Ip, Hui Tian, Ke Zhou, Hong Jiang, Dan Feng Oct 2009

Digital Logic Based Encoding Strategies For Steganography On Voice-Over-Ip, Hui Tian, Ke Zhou, Hong Jiang, Dan Feng

School of Computing: Conference and Workshop Papers

This paper presents three encoding strategies based on digital logic for steganography on Voice over IP (VoIP), which aim to enhance the embedding transparency. Differing from previous approaches, our strategies reduce the embedding distortion by improving the similarity between the cover and the covert message using digital logical transformations, instead of reducing the amount of the substitution bits. Therefore, by contrast, our strategies will improve the embedding transparency without sacrificing the embedding capacity. Of these three strategies, the first one adopts logical operations, the second one employs circular shifting operations, and the third one combines the operations of the first …

Evolution Of The Cretaceous Calcareous Nannofossil Genus Eiffellithus And Its Biostratigraphic Significance, J. L. Shamrock, David K. Watkins Oct 2009

Evolution Of The Cretaceous Calcareous Nannofossil Genus Eiffellithus And Its Biostratigraphic Significance, J. L. Shamrock, David K. Watkins

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications

The calcareous nannofossil genus Eiffellithus is an important taxon of mid- to Upper Cretaceous marine sediments in biostratigraphy and paleoceanography. The definition of species within Eiffellithus have been both broadly interpreted and variably applied by nannofossil workers. This is particularly true for the Eiffellithus eximius plexus. While the taxonomy of mid-Cretaceous Eiffellithus species has recently been well-defined, the remaining 35 m.y. history of the genus has not been closely examined. Our investigation of Cenomanian to Maastrichtian sediments from the Western Interior Seaway, Gulf of Mexico, and Western Atlantic gives rise to six new species of Eiffellithus that can be reliably …

Estimation Of Channel Transfer Function And Carrier Frequency Offset For Ofdm Systems With Phase Noise, Jun Tao, Jingxian Wu, Chengshan Xiao Oct 2009

Estimation Of Channel Transfer Function And Carrier Frequency Offset For Ofdm Systems With Phase Noise, Jun Tao, Jingxian Wu, Chengshan Xiao

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The joint estimation of carrier frequency offset (CFO) and channel transfer function (CTF) for orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) systems with phase noise is discussed in this paper. A CFO estimation algorithm is developed by exploring the time-frequency structure of specially designed training symbols, and it provides a very accurate estimation of the CFO in the presence of both unknown frequency-selective fading and phase noise. Based on the estimated CFO, phase noise and frequency-selective fading are jointly estimated by employing the maximum a posteriori (MAP) criterion. Specifically, the fading channel is estimated in the form of the frequency-domain CTF. The estimation …

While it represents the work of many people connected in various ways to the university, the report does not constitute an official viewpoint of Old Dominion or it's president, John R. Broderick. The report maintains the goal of stimulating thought and discussion that ultimately will make Hampton Roads an even better place to live. We are proud of our region's many successes, but realize that it is possible to improve our performance. In order to do so, we must have accurate information about "where we are" and a …

Dynamic Modeling And Analysis Of Multiple Sofc System Configurations, Andrew J. Slippey Oct 2009

Dynamic Modeling And Analysis Of Multiple Sofc System Configurations, Andrew J. Slippey

Theses

Solid oxide fuel cells (SOFC) are a variety of high temperature fuel cells with particular advantages such as fuel flexibility, internal fuel reforming capability, and combined heat and power (CHP) applications. To aid in the advancement of this technology, this work develops dynamic, computer-based, mathematical models of two SOFC configurations employing different SOFC and reformer technologies. Starting from an existing recirculation-based tubular SOFC system with a steam reformer, new component models are developed for a planar SOFC stack and a partial oxidation (POX) reformer. Both the new and existing component models were updated and improved by including new pressure dynamics …

Reinforcement-Learning-Based Output-Feedback Control Of Nonstrict Nonlinear Discrete-Time Systems With Application To Engine Emission Control, Peter Shih, Brian C. Kaul, Jagannathan Sarangapani, J. A. Drallmeier

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A novel reinforcement-learning-based output adaptive neural network (NN) controller, which is also referred to as the adaptive-critic NN controller, is developed to deliver the desired tracking performance for a class of nonlinear discrete-time systems expressed in nonstrict feedback form in the presence of bounded and unknown disturbances. The adaptive-critic NN controller consists of an observer, a critic, and two action NNs. The observer estimates the states and output, and the two action NNs provide virtual and actual control inputs to the nonlinear discrete-time system. The critic approximates a certain strategic utility function, and the action NNs minimize the strategic utility …

Dynamic Coalition Formation Under Uncertainty, Daylon J. Hooper, Gilbert L. Peterson, Brett J. Borghetti Oct 2009

Dynamic Coalition Formation Under Uncertainty, Daylon J. Hooper, Gilbert L. Peterson, Brett J. Borghetti

Faculty Publications

Coalition formation algorithms are generally not applicable to real-world robotic collectives since they lack mechanisms to handle uncertainty. Those mechanisms that do address uncertainty either deflect it by soliciting information from others or apply reinforcement learning to select an agent type from within a set. This paper presents a coalition formation mechanism that directly addresses uncertainty while allowing the agent types to fall outside of a known set. The agent types are captured through a novel agent modeling technique that handles uncertainty through a belief-based evaluation mechanism. This technique allows for uncertainty in environmental data, agent type, coalition value, and …
