Representation Theory For Strange Attractors, Daniel J. Cross
Representation Theory For Strange Attractors, Daniel J. Cross
Physics Faculty Scholarship
Embeddings are diffeomorphisms between some unseen physical attractor and a reconstructed image. Different embeddings may or may not be equivalent under isotopy. We regard embeddings as representations of the attractor, review the labels required to distinguish inequivalent representations for an important class of dynamical systems, and discuss the systematic ways inequivalent embeddings become equivalent as the embedding dimension increases until there is finally only one “universal” embedding in a suitable dimension.
Social Capital Through Workplace Connections: Opportunities For Workers With Intellectual Disabilities, Allison Cohen Hall, John Kramer
Social Capital Through Workplace Connections: Opportunities For Workers With Intellectual Disabilities, Allison Cohen Hall, John Kramer
All Institute for Community Inclusion Publications
Using qualitative methods, this study examined the experiences of individuals with intellectual disabilities (IDs) in sheltered workshops and compared them to those in community employment. In particular, the study investigated how employment affects opportunities for the creation of social capital. Primary respondents were individuals with ID and secondary respondents were family members and employment services staff. Findings revealed that a form of social capital was created through workplace connections. Community employment did not increase social capital per se, but it did produce opportunities not available in the workshop. The role of family members emerged as critical in the support of …

Patent Citation Networks Revisited: Signs Of A Twenty-First Century Change?, Katherine J. Strandburg, Gábor Csárdi, Jan Tobochnik, Péter Érdi, László Zalányi
Patent Citation Networks Revisited: Signs Of A Twenty-First Century Change?, Katherine J. Strandburg, Gábor Csárdi, Jan Tobochnik, Péter Érdi, László Zalányi
Faculty Articles
This Article reports an empirical study of the network composed of patent "nodes" and citation "links" between them. It builds on an earlier study in which we argued that trends in the growth of the patent citation network provide evidence that the explosive growth in patenting in the late twentieth-century was due at least in part to the issuance of increasingly trivial patents. We defined a measure of patent stratification based on comparative probability of citation; an increase in this measure suggests that the United States Patent and Trademark Office is issuing patents of comparatively less technological significance. Provocatively, we …
Will Aggregate Litigation Come To Europe?, Samuel Issacharoff, Geoffrey P. Miller
Will Aggregate Litigation Come To Europe?, Samuel Issacharoff, Geoffrey P. Miller
Faculty Articles
This Essay considers Europe's experiment with aggregate litigation in light of American experience. European thinking on the topic appears to have reached consensus on two points: first, aggregate litigation will soon be the norm for Europe; and second, whatever form European aggregate litigation takes, it will not replicate American class action litigation with its domination by entrepreneurial plaintiffs' attorneys. We first examine four sources of dissatisfaction with the class action to assess which are meritorious, which are ill-founded, and which derive from a deeper debate over whether or not there should be private legal accountability for consumer claims. Drawing on …
Construction And Analysis Of Random Networks With Explosive Percolation, Eric J. Friedman, Adam Landsberg
Construction And Analysis Of Random Networks With Explosive Percolation, Eric J. Friedman, Adam Landsberg
Physics Faculty Scholarship
The existence of explosive phase transitions in random (Erdös Rényi-type) networks has been recently documented by Achlioptas, D’Souza, and Spencer via simulations. In this Letter we describe the underlying mechanism behind these first-order phase transitions and develop tools that allow us to identify (and predict) when a random network will exhibit an explosive transition. Several interesting new models displaying explosive transitions are also presented.

Asca Code Of Ethics And The Relevance Of Eastern Ethical Theories, Amy Cook, Rick Houser
Asca Code Of Ethics And The Relevance Of Eastern Ethical Theories, Amy Cook, Rick Houser
Counseling, School Psychology & Sport Faculty Publication Series
As schools become increasingly diverse through immigration and growth of minority groups, it is important that school counselors incorporate culturally sensitive ethical decision-making in their practice. The use of Western ethical theories in the application of professional codes of ethics provides a specific perspective in ethical decision- making, but may not provide school counselors with a broad cultural perspective. We discuss the use of Eastern theories of ethics (Taoism and Hinduism) and their relevance to the ASCA Ethical Standards for School Counselors to inform school counselors’ work with Asian immigrant students.

Reading Joycean Comedy And Faulknerian Tragedy: Exploring The Significance Of Location, Literary Influence And The Possibilities Of Heroism With Leopold Bloom In Joyce’S Ulysses And Quentin Compson In Faulkner’S The Sound And The Fury And Absalom, Absalom!, Colin R. Cummings
Honors Theses
The distinct similarity between Joyce’s and Faulkner’s philosophical concerns (the affirmation of life in spite of its myriad difficulties), and the striking disjuncture between their aesthetic approaches (comedy for Joyce and tragedy for Faulkner), is where my interest in this project began. I sought to explore the lives and works of both writers in order to get a sense of how two artists could attempt to convey a similar message through such different means. The first thing I explore is a number of similarities between Joyce’s and Faulkner’s personal worlds (particularly their intimate connections to location) and their sources of …
Modeling And Experiments In Microchannels For The Separation And Detection Of Bacteria Using Antibody-Coated Filter And Quantum Dots, Narendra Sharma
Modeling And Experiments In Microchannels For The Separation And Detection Of Bacteria Using Antibody-Coated Filter And Quantum Dots, Narendra Sharma
Open Access Dissertations
Capture and detection of biomarkers for organisms is an important aspect in the design of a Lab-on-a-Chip (LOC). In this research, modeling and experiments were conducted to separate, capture and detect E. coli K12 bacteria from water samples using microchannels. Microchannels were fabricated using the soft lithography technique. The bacteria were separated from the sample and captured at a polyester filter whose surface was modified by attaching functional groups that had affinity for antibodies specific to E. coli K12. The bacteria bound to the functionalized filter were then tagged with quantum dots conjugated with E. coli K12-specific antibodies for detection …

Introduction:
In 2008 I was approached to deliver a keynote address at the biennial conference of the Distance Education Association of New Zealand (DEANZ) in Wellington on the topic of today’s student and K–12 distance education. Several months ago, Mark Nichols asked me if I would be interested in putting some of the ideas that I discussed as a part of that August 2008 presentation into a manuscript for the Journal of Distance Learning. This paper represents my best efforts to summarise and expand on those ideas.
As in my 2008 keynote, I want to discuss three main themes …

Athletes Have Faster Eye-Hand Visual Reaction Times And Higher Scores On Visuospatial Intelligence Than Nonathletes, Sedi̇ Akarsu, Erkan Çalişkan, Şenol Dane
Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences
Aim: To compare sports-related visual abilities such as hand-eye reaction time and visuospatial intelligence of athletes to nonathletes. Materials and methods: Differences in sports-related visual abilities such as hand-eye reaction time and visuospatial intelligence between athletes and nonathletes were studied in 157 male (M age = 13.9 years, SD = 1.8) and 126 female (M age = 13.9 years, SD = 1.7) high school students. Visuospatial intelligence was assessed with Cattel's Culture Fair Intelligence Test. A software package of random stimulus presentation and response recording was used for eye-hand reaction time. Results: Athletes had lower eye-hand visual reaction time (the …
Dna Sequence Representation By Use Of Statistical Finite Automata, Asmi Shah
Dna Sequence Representation By Use Of Statistical Finite Automata, Asmi Shah
Master's Projects
This project defines and intends to solve the problem of representing information carried by DNA sequences in terms of amino acids, through application of the theory of finite automata. Sequences can be compared against each other to find existing patterns, if any, which may include important genetic information. Comparison can state whether the DNA sequences belong to the same, related or entirely different species in the ‘Tree of Life’ (phylogeny). This is achieved by using extended and statistical finite automata. In order to solve this problem, the concepts of automata and their extension, i.e. Alergia algorithm have been used. In …

Master's Projects
A calendar is a system to organize days for social, commercial or administrative purpose. Many calendar systems are available today. The calendar system helps the user in scheduling his/her events or tasks over a time period. This period may be an hour, a day, or even months. Due to increase in user’s activities, events that need to be scheduled in the calendar grow tremendously. Moreover, there are events that occur every year which require a good visualization for mental manipulation. As a result there is a difficulty in organizing these events in the current calendar system. The main idea of …

Chinese Wall Security Policy, Varun Gupta
Master's Projects
This project establishes a Chinese wall security policy model in the environment of cloud computing. In 1988 Brewer and Nash proposed a very nice commercial security policy in British financial world. Though the policy was well accepted, but the model was incorrect. A decade later, Dr. Lin provided a model in 2003 that meets Brewer & Nash’s Policy. One of the important components in Cloud computing is data center. In order for any company to store data in the center, a trustable security policy model is a must; Chinese wall security policy model will provide this assurance. The heart of …

Hybrid Clustering With Application To Web Pages, Ameya Sabnis
Master's Projects
This project explains the process of clustering web pages. With the immense increase in the number of web pages available on the internet, it has become difficult to search for web pages. The clustering of web pages will improve the presentation of web pages to the user and saves the time spent on searching web pages. Various clustering techniques have been proposed by various research scientists to cluster the web pages, but all the techniques suggested have some drawbacks. Since there is lot of scope for further improvement in the field of clustering, the system proposed in this report takes …
Versatile Extensible Security System For Mobile Ad Hoc Networks, Jung Chang
Versatile Extensible Security System For Mobile Ad Hoc Networks, Jung Chang
Master's Projects
Mobile Ad hoc Network (MANET) is becoming more and more popular in scientific, government, and general applications, but security system for MANET is still at infant stage. Currently, there are not many security systems that provide extensive security coverage for MANET. Moreover, most of these security systems assume nodes have infinite computation power and energy; an assumption that is not true for many mobiles. Versatile and Extensible System (VESS) is a powerful and versatile general-purpose security suite that comprises of modified versions of existing encryption and authentication schemes. VESS uses a simple and network-efficient but still reliable authentication scheme. The …

Visualization Of Tree-Structured Data Through A Multi Touch User Interface, David Andrews
Visualization Of Tree-Structured Data Through A Multi Touch User Interface, David Andrews
Master's Projects
This writing project examines different types of visualizations for tree-structured data sets. Visualizations discussed include link-node diagrams and treemap diagrams. Also discussed is recent innovations with regards to distinguishing multi touch from single touch technology. I explore the requirements needed to build a multi touch table top surface, and describe the process of building one. I then describe my proposed method of visualizing tree-structured data and how it can be implemented using Core Animation technology. I also propose a means of interacting with the data through a multi touch interface, and discuss which gestures can be used to navigate the …
