Hydrodynamic Forces On Inundated Bridge Decks, Kornel Kerenyi, Tanju Sofu, Junke Guo Jan 2009

Hydrodynamic Forces On Inundated Bridge Decks, Kornel Kerenyi, Tanju Sofu, Junke Guo

United States Department of Transportation: Publications

The hydrodynamic forces experienced by an inundated bridge deck have great importance in the design of bridges. Specifically, the drag force, lift force, and the moment acting on the bridge deck under various levels of inundation and a range of flow conditions influence the design and construction of the bridge. This report explores the forces acting on bridges in two ways. First, through physical experimentation on scaled-down bridge deck models tested in a flume and then with computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation models. Three bridge deck prototypes were used for the experimentation: a typical six-girder highway bridge deck, a three-girder …

Toxicity Of Polybrominated Diphenyl Ethers (De-71) In Chicken (Gallus Gallus), Mallard (Anas Platyrhynchos), And American Kestrel (Falco Sparverius) Embryos And Hatchlings, Moira A. Mckernan, Barnett A. Rattner, Robert C. Hales, Mary Ann Ottinger Jan 2009

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

Embryonic survival, pipping and hatching success, and sublethal biochemical, endocrine, and histological endpoints were examined in hatchling chickens (Gallus gallus), mallards (Anas platyrhynchos), and American kestrels (Falco sparverius) following air cell administration of a pentabrominated diphenyl ether (penta-BDE; DE-71) mixture (0.01–20 µg/g egg) or polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) congener 126 (3,3’,4,4’,5-pentachlorobiphenyl; 0.002 µg/g egg). The penta-BDE decreased pipping and hatching success at concentrations of 10 and 20 µg/g egg in kestrels but had no effect on survival endpoints in chickens or mallards. Sublethal effects in hatchling chickens included ethoxyresorufin-O-dealkylase (EROD) induction and histological …

Retrieval Of Subpixel Snow Covered Area, Grain Size, And Albedo From Modis, Thomas H. Painter, Karl Rittger, Ceretha Mckenzie, Peter Slaughter, Robert E. Davis, Jeff Dozier

United States Army: Publications

We describe and validate a model that retrieves fractional snow-covered area and the grain size and albedo of that snow from surface reflectance data (product MOD09GA) acquired by NASA's Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS). The model analyzes the MODIS visible, near infrared, and shortwave infrared bands with multiple endmember spectral mixtures from a library of snow, vegetation, rock, and soil. We derive snow spectral endmembers of varying grain size from a radiative transfer model specific to a scene's illumination geometry; spectra for vegetation, rock, and soil were collected in the field and laboratory. We validate the model with fractional snow …

Detection, Occurrence, And Fate Of Emerging Contaminants In Agricultural Environments (2009), Daniel D. Snow, Shannon L. Bartelt-Hunt, Shannon Devivo, Samuel Saunders, David A. Cassada

Nebraska Water Center: Faculty Publications

Frequently studied environmental contaminants in agricultural systems include nutrients, sediments, and pesticides. These groups of contaminants typically occur at easily measured concentrations in surface run-off in agricultural watersheds. Nutrients, especially nitrogen, and pesticides have also been shown to impact ground water quality in areas susceptible to contamination. Less well-known are environmental impacts of newer classes of contaminants such as pharmaceuticals, steroids, antibiotic-resistance genes and prion proteins. These “emerging” contaminants clearly have potential to enter the environment and cause known or suspected adverse ecological or human health effects. Release of these contaminants to the environment often has occurred for quite some …

Nebraska Water Center: Faculty Publications

A former agrichemical dealership in western Nebraska was suspected of having contaminated soil. Our objective was to characterize and remediate the contaminated site by a combined chemical-biological approach. This was accomplished by creating contour maps of the on-site contamination, placing the top 60 cm of contaminated soil in windrows and mixing with a mechanical high-speed mixer. Homogenized soil containing both atrazine [6-chloro-N-ethyl-N´-isopropyl-1,3,5-triazine- 2,4-diamine] and cyanazine {2-[[4-chloro-6-(ethylamino)-1,3,5- triazin-2-yl] amino]-2-methylpropanenitrile} was then used in laboratory investigations to determine optimum treatments for pesticide destruction. Iron suspension experiments verified that zerovalent iron (Fe0) plus ferrous sulfate (FeSO4 …

Electron-Induced Bond Breaking At Low Energies In Hcooh And Glycine: The Role Of Very Short-Lived Σ* Anion States, Gordon A. Gallup, Paul Burrow, Ilya I. Fabrikant

Gordon Gallup Publications

Cross sections for dissociative electron attachment (DEA) to formic acid and glycine are calculated by the resonant R-matrix theory. A model with one effective reaction coordinate close to the O-H stretch motion is employed. The choice of the anion R-matrix pole and the surface amplitude as functions of the reaction coordinate for formic acid are based on scattering phase-shift calculations using the finite element discrete model. For glycine the input parameters are adjusted to reproduce experimental data. The results show that the mechanism of DEA in these molecules is similar to that for the hydrogen halides and involves electron …

Rescigno et al. [Phys. Rev. A 80, 046701 (2009)] criticized our theoretical treatment of dissociative electron attachment in formic acid in which we show that this process can be explained by electron attachment into the temporary negative ion state formed by occupation of the σ*(OH) orbital. We argue that their objections do not hold up to scrutiny.

Nanoscale Insight Into The Statics And Dynamics Of Polarization Behavior In Thin Film Ferroelectric Capacitors, Alexei Gruverman

Alexei Gruverman Publications

In this study, we review recent advances in PFM studies of micrometer scale ferroelectric capacitors, summarize the experimental PFM-based approach to investigation of fast switching processes, illustrate what information can be obtained from PFM experiments on domains kinetics, and delineate the scaling effect on polarization reversal mechanism. Particular attention is given to PFM studies of mechanical stress effect on polarization stability.

Fungal Physiology: A Future Perspective, Richard A. Wilson, Nicholas J. Talbot Jan 2009

Fungal Physiology: A Future Perspective, Richard A. Wilson, Nicholas J. Talbot

Fungal Molecular Plant-Microbe Interactions

The study of fungal physiology is set to change dramatically in the next few years as highly scalable technologies are deployed allowing accurate measurement and identification of metabolites, proteins and transcripts within cells. The advent of next-generation DNA-sequencing technologies will also provide genome sequence information from large numbers of industrially relevant and pathogenic fungal species, and allow comparative genome analysis between strains and populations of fungi. When coupled with advances in gene functional analysis, protein-protein interaction studies, live cell imaging and mathematical modelling, this promises a step-change in our understanding of how fungal cells operate as integrated dynamic living systems

Tree Die-Off In Response To Global Change-Type Drought: Mortality Insights From A Decade Of Plant Water Potential Measurements, David D. Breshears, Orrin B. Meyers, Clifton W. Meyer, Fairley J. Barnes, Chris B. Zou, Craig D. Allen, Nathan G. Mcdowell, William Pockman

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

Global climate change is projected to produce warmer, longer, and more frequent droughts, referred to here as “global change-type droughts”, which have the potential to trigger widespread tree die-off. However, drought-induced tree mortality cannot be predicted with confidence, because long-term field observations of plant water stress prior to, and culminating in, mortality are rare, precluding the development and testing of mechanisms. Here, we document plant water stress in two widely distributed, co-occurring species, piñon pine (Pinus edulis) and juniper (Juniperus monosperma), over more than a decade, leading up to regional-scale die-off of piñon pine trees in …

Complex Electronic States In Double-Layered Ruthenates (Sr1−Xcax)3ru2o7, Zhe Qu, Jin Peng, David Fobes, Leonard Spinu, Zhiqiang Mao

Physics Faculty Publications

The magnetic ground state of (Sr1−xCax)3Ru2O7 (0≤x≤1) is complex, ranging from an itinerant metamagnetic state (0≤x<0.08) to an unusual heavy-mass nearly ferromagnetic (FM) state (0.08<x<0.4), and finally to an antiferromagnetic (AFM) state (0.4≤x≤1). In this report we elucidate the electronic properties for these magnetic states, and show that the electronic and magnetic properties are strongly coupled in this system. The electronic ground state evolves from an AFM quasi-two-dimensional metal for x=1.0 to an Anderson localized state for 0.4≤x<1.0 (the AFM region). When the magnetic state undergoes a transition from the AFM to the nearly FM state, the electronic ground state switches to a weakly localized state induced by magnetic scattering for 0.25≤x<0.4, and then to a magnetic metallic state with the in-plane resistivity ρab∝Tα (α>2) for 0.08<x<0.25. The system eventually transforms into a Fermi-liquid ground state when the magnetic ground state enters the itinerant metamagnetic state for x<0.08. When x approaches the critical composition (x∼0.08), …

We have investigated the effect of Fe nonstoichiometry on properties of the Fe1+y(Te,Se) superconductor system by means of resistivity, Hall coefficient, magnetic susceptibility, and specific-heat measurements. We find that the excess Fe at interstitial sites of the (Te, Se) layers not only suppresses superconductivity but also results in a weakly localized electronic state. We argue that these effects originate from the magnetic coupling between the excess Fe and the adjacent Fe square-planar sheets, which favors a short-range magnetic order.

'Formerly The Property Of A Lawyer’: Books That Shaped Louisiana Law, Florence M. Jumonville Ph.D.

Library Faculty Publications

Books are indispensable to lawyers and judges, containing as they do the official record of the laws that define rights, liberties, and behavior, as well as the accumulated wisdom with which those laws have been interpreted. Law books were particularly important during the formative years of the American nation, from its founding until the Civil War, as the young federal government and each state developed its unique legal literature. This study focuses on the sources that shaped Louisiana law by examining collections that were developed during approximately the first fifty years after the Louisiana Purchase by six New Orleans attorneys, …

Physics Faculty Publications

The new α-Fe(Te,Se) superconductors share the common iron building block and ferminology with the LaFeAsO and BaFe2As2 families of superconductors. In contrast with the predicted commensurate spin-density-wave order at the nesting wave vector (π, 0), a completely different magnetic order with a composition tunable propagation vector (δπ, δπ) was determined for the parent compound Fe1+yTe in this powder and single-crystal neutron diffraction study. The new antiferromagnetic order survives as a short-range one even in the highest TC sample. An alternative to the prevailing nesting Fermi surface mechanism is required to understand the latest family …

Structural, Magnetic, And Electronic Transport Properties Of (Sr0.9ca0.1)3ru2o7 Single Crystal, Bin Qian, Zhe Qu, Jin Peng, Tijang Liu, Xiaoshan Wu, L Spinu, Z Q. Mao

Physics Faculty Publications

We have studied the structural, magnetic, and electronic transport properties of (Sr0.9Ca0.1)3Ru2O7 using single crystals grown by a floating-zone technique. The structure analysis by Rietveld refinements reveals that the Ca substitution for Sr intensifies the structure distortion; the rotation angle of the RuO6 octahedron increases. This structure change tunes magnetic and transport properties dramatically. The magnetic ground state switches from an itinerant metamagnetic state for Sr3Ru2O7 to a nearly ferromagnetic state for (Sr0.9Ca0.1)3Ru2O7. The Fermi …

Meaning Constitution Analysis: A Phenomenological Approach To Research In Human Sciences, Roger B. Sages, Jonas Lundsten

Papers from the International Association for Cross-Cultural Psychology Conferences

Each and every thought, word, feeling or action of a person harbor a richness of meaning, opening on all the possible worlds accessible for him/her. A vision on those possible worlds, those open possibilities of action, should be of great interest for human science research. We believe that the phenomenological thinking of Edmund Husserl, reworked to adapt to the modern conception of the human sciences, can allow such an understanding of a person or a more or less large group, giving not a static picture of his mind, but a dynamic view of the ongoing process of constitution of meaning. …
