Organizations worldwide have been turning to Six Sigma program (SSP) to eliminate the defects in their products or drive out the variability in their processes to attain a competitive advantage in their marketplace. An effective certification program has been touted as a major contributor to successful implementation of SSP. An effective certification program provides the professionals involved with SSP projects a clear understanding of what their responsibilities should be in reducing the variability in their processes. Despite the benefits, a significant number of professionals who attend certification training fail to become certified.

This study aimed to develop a predictive model …

Parallel Mining Of Association Rules Using A Lattice Based Approach, Wessel Morant Thomas Jan 2009

Parallel Mining Of Association Rules Using A Lattice Based Approach, Wessel Morant Thomas

CCAC Theses and Dissertations

The discovery of interesting patterns from database transactions is one of the major problems in knowledge discovery in database. One such interesting pattern is the association rules extracted from these transactions. Parallel algorithms are required for the mining of association rules due to the very large databases used to store the transactions. In this paper we present a parallel algorithm for the mining of association rules. We implemented a parallel algorithm that used a lattice approach for mining association rules. The Dynamic Distributed Rule Mining (DDRM) is a lattice-based algorithm that partitions the lattice into sublattices to be assigned to …

A Study Of First- And Continuing-Generation College Students' Use Of Internet Communication Technologies In Social Capital And Its Contribution To Their Persistence In College, Gail Dianne (Hodge) Hayes Jan 2009

A Study Of First- And Continuing-Generation College Students' Use Of Internet Communication Technologies In Social Capital And Its Contribution To Their Persistence In College, Gail Dianne (Hodge) Hayes

CCAC Theses and Dissertations

Prior studies have shown that students who are the first in their families to attend college fail to persist in college more so than their continuing-generation (CG) counterparts do. Prior research on this phenomenon has helped to identify various factors that contribute to the lower college persistence of first-generation (FG) students. For example, social capital has been identified as a factor that improves student persistence in college. Prior studies have shown that FG students tend to enter college with lower social capital than their CG student counterparts do. Additionally, while in school, FG students tend not to engage in behaviors …

The Ethical Responsibility To Reduce Energy Consumption, John C. Dernbach, Donald A. Brown Jan 2009

The Ethical Responsibility To Reduce Energy Consumption, John C. Dernbach, Donald A. Brown

Hofstra Law Review

This Article argues that developed countries have an ethical responsibility to reduce energy consumption - through energy efficiency and conservation - as part of the global effort to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. While this responsibility is borne by nations themselves, it has consequences for the individuals living in those nations. This Article also argues that developing countries have different duties concerning energy consumption. Their responsibility to improve human quality of life will mean greater use of modern energy, especially when it is not now available. At the same time, developing countries should use energy efficiency and conservation when it is …

Application Of Hertz Vector Diffraction Theory To The Diffraction Of Focused Gaussian Beams And Calculations Of Focal Parameters, Glen D. Gillen, Kendra Baughman, Shekhar Guha Jan 2009

Application Of Hertz Vector Diffraction Theory To The Diffraction Of Focused Gaussian Beams And Calculations Of Focal Parameters, Glen D. Gillen, Kendra Baughman, Shekhar Guha

Physics

Hertz vector diffraction theory is applied to a focused TEM00 Gaussian light field passing through a circular aperture. The resulting theoretical vector field model reproduces plane-wave diffractive behavior for severely clipped beams, expected Gaussian beam behavior for unperturbed focused Gaussian beams as well as unique diffracted-Gaussian behavior between the two regimes. The maximum intensity obtainable and the width of the beam in the focal plane are investigated as a function of the clipping ratio between the aperture radius and the beam width in the aperture plane.

Analytical Regularization Method For Electromagnetic Wave Diffraction By Axially Symmetrical Thin Annular Strips, Fati̇h Di̇kmen, Yury Alexanderovich Tuchkin Jan 2009

Analytical Regularization Method For Electromagnetic Wave Diffraction By Axially Symmetrical Thin Annular Strips, Fati̇h Di̇kmen, Yury Alexanderovich Tuchkin

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

A new mathematically rigorous and numerically efficient method based on the combination of Orthogonal Polynomials Method, and Analytical Regularization Method, for electromagnetic wave diffraction by a model structure for various antennae such as Fresnel zone plates is proposed. It can be used as validation tool for the other (more general or less accurate) numerical methods and physical approaches. The initial boundary value problem is equivalently reduced to the infinite system of the linear algebraic equations of the second kind, i.e. to an equation of the type (I+H) x=b in the space l_2 with compact operator H. This equation can be …

Bioactive Sphingolipids Mediate Apoptosis And Senescence In Human Pancreatic Cancer Cells, Evelyn I. Leon Jan 2009

Bioactive Sphingolipids Mediate Apoptosis And Senescence In Human Pancreatic Cancer Cells, Evelyn I. Leon

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

Ceramide is a second messenger involved in apoptosis, cell differentiation, and growth arrest. We hypothesize that in tumor cells, insufficient sphingomyelin (SM) limits the amount of ceramide which can be generated for the probagation of the apoptotic signal resulting from treatment with chemotherapy. As a result, we postulated that exogenous SM will facilitate apoptosis and synergize with chemotherapeutic agents.

The current studies examined the response of the Panel human pancreatic cancer cell line to gemcitabine, a nucleoside analog, in the presence and absence of sub-toxic doses of SM. Cytotoxic dose response relationships demonstrated an increased chemosensitivity to gemcitabine with SM …

Algebra Rules Object Boxes As An Authentic Assessment Task Of Preservice Elementary Teacher Learning In A Mathematics Methods Course, Audrey C. Rule, J. E. Hallagan Jan 2009

Algebra Rules Object Boxes As An Authentic Assessment Task Of Preservice Elementary Teacher Learning In A Mathematics Methods Course, Audrey C. Rule, J. E. Hallagan

Open Educational Resources

The purpose of this study was to describe elementary preservice teachers’ difficulties with understanding algebraic generalizations that were set in an authentic context. Fifty-eight preservice teachers enrolled in an elementary mathematics methods course participated in the study. These students explored and practiced with authentic, hands-on materials called “object boxes,” then created sets of their own object box materials. Each algebra rules object box contained materials to illustrate and describe four different algebraic generalizations, or “rules.” The variables “n” and “z” were used in each of the generalizations. For each generalization, there was a set of objects attached to a piece …

Feedback from community college, four year college, and high school science teachers highlighted the following five study issues and needs for improving student transitions from high school to college science: 1) Better math preparation is needed; 2) More work with inquiry-based learning rather than with facts and memorization …

Island Method For Estimating The Statistical Significance Of Profile-Profile Alignment Scores, Aleksandar Poleksic Jan 2009

Island Method For Estimating The Statistical Significance Of Profile-Profile Alignment Scores, Aleksandar Poleksic

Faculty Work

Background: In the last decade, a significant improvement in detecting remote similarity between protein sequences has been made by utilizing alignment profiles in place of amino-acid strings. Unfortunately, no analytical theory is available for estimating the significance of a gapped alignment of two profiles. Many experiments suggest that the distribution of local profile-profile alignment scores is of the Gumbel form. However, estimating distribution parameters by random simulations turns out to be computationally very expensive.

Results: We demonstrate that the background distribution of profile-profile alignment scores heavily depends on profiles' composition and thus the distribution parameters must be estimated …

Skittles Chocolate Mix Color Distribution: A Chi-Square Experience, David R. Duncan, Bonnie H. Litwiller

Faculty Work

In teaching statistical processes, it is important that there be application to realworld settings and activities. When this is done, students are more likely to see the meaning of the steps being developed.

One such activity involves using the Chi-Square statistical test and its applications to counting Skittles Chocolate Mix candies. Many students are aware that these candies come in five different flavors: Brownie Batter (BB), Vanilla (V), Chocolate Caramel (CC), S’mores (S), and Chocolate Pudding (CP).

Doubly Curved Crystal Optics For Monochromatic And Diffraction Enhanced X-Ray Imaging, Santosh Kumar Sahoo Jan 2009

Doubly Curved Crystal Optics For Monochromatic And Diffraction Enhanced X-Ray Imaging, Santosh Kumar Sahoo

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

In radiographic imaging the contrast can be enhanced with the use of monochromatic radiation compared to conventional broadband source. Monochromatic beam radiation can be produced with conventional sources by diffraction off of flat monochromator crystals, but this produces a low monochromatic intensity for imaging.
