Extending The Geometric Phase To Relativistic Spacetime, Sajid Raihan Akash Mar 2026

Extending The Geometric Phase To Relativistic Spacetime, Sajid Raihan Akash

Department of Physics and Astronomy: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

The Berry phase [3] is traditionally understood as a geometric phase acquired during cyclic adiabatic evolution, often interpreted as the flux of an effective “magnetic field” through a solid angle in parameter space. In this thesis, we investigate situations in which a geometric phase arises even when no spatial solid angle is enclosed, revealing the limitations of the standard purely spatial interpretation. We first review the Berry phase for a spin-½ particle in a slowly varying magnetic field and analyze scenarios in which the system’s eigenstate is changed during the adiabatic evolution. We show that the resulting phase can be …

Discovery Of Quasi-Carbon Nanotube Structures In Tectonically Deformed Coals And Their Formation Mechanisms, Li Yunbo, Wang Rongqi, Song Dangyu, Wang Chengtao, Li Qiang, Yi Ke, Wang Yuanyuan, Pan Jienan

Coal Geology & Exploration

Objective Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have attracted wide attention due to their unique structures and performance. However, their artificial synthesis requires stringent conditions, including high temperatures (700 ℃ to 2 300 ℃), stable carbon sources, and catalysts. Furthermore, these structures are rarely discovered in nature. As a carbon-rich medium, coals can form a variety of ordered carbon structures during their metamorphic and deformational processes, serving as an ideal carrier for exploring the formation mechanisms of natural CNTs.Methods Typical tectonically deformed coals from the Pingdingshan and Huaibei mining areas were investigated in this study. After demineralization and chloroform extraction, coal samples …

Coupling Mechanisms Of Fracture Propagation And Proppant Transport Indeep Coalbed Methane Reservoirs, Guo Xiaodong, Zhang Shicheng, Zhang Jingchen, Zhou Changjing, Zhang Chengsheng, Qiu Shixin, Xi Xiangrui

Coal Geology & Exploration

Objectives and Methods Deep coalbed methane (CBM) reservoirs commonly exhibit well-developed beddings, strong mechanical heterogeneity, and high in-situ stress gradients. These characteristics result in pronounced nonlinear fracture propagation and strong multi-field coupling effects during hydraulic fracturing. Consequently, it is challenging to accurately describe the mechanisms governing fracture complexity in deep coal reservoirs using conventional mechanical models for fractures. Using a super-large true triaxial system with dimensions of 2.0 m × 2.0 m × 1.0 m, this study conducted physical simulation experiments on hydraulic fracturing under varying injection rates and viscosities of fracturing fluids. In combination with fracture mechanics and energy …

Coal Geology & Exploration

Background The effective coalbed methane (CBM) exploitation using hydraulic fracturing wells is severely constrained by two major solid-phase production issues: coal fines blockage and proppant flowback. The mechanisms behind both issues are associated with complex interplays between geological conditions and engineering disturbances. This study presents a systematic review of the current status of domestic and international research on the mechanisms of the solid-phase production, as well as relevant prevention and control methods. Furthermore, future research directions are proposed.Advances The solid-phase production in hydraulically fractured CBM wells essentially arises from flow-solid-chemical multi-field coupling processes under interplays between geological conditions and …

Predicting The Risk Of Water-Sand Inrushes From Coal Seam Roofs Based On A Small-Size Sample Dataset, Zhang Wenquan, Li Zixu, Zhu Xianxiang, Qiu Wei, Zhang Chengjie

Coal Geology & Exploration

Objective The eastern and northern regions of China exhibit thick unconsolidated layers and thin bedrocks, with water-sand inrush disasters occurring frequently. Therefore, accurately predicting the risk of water-sand inrushes from coal seam roofs holds great significance for safe coal mining. However, the water-sand inrushes in these regions exhibit complex disaster-causing mechanisms, which involve the coupling effects of multiple factors. Accordingly, the real-time prediction of the water-sand inrush risk in the field poses challenges including high risk and cost. These issues lead to difficult data acquisition and severely insufficient samples, limiting the accuracy and performance of traditional prediction models. Therefore, there …

A Model For Predicting Coal Mining-Induced Surface Subsidence During Theinitial, Active, And Decline Stages, Zhang Liangliang, Liu Xiya, Cheng Hua, Du Shaoneng

Coal Geology & Exploration

Objectives and Methods Presently, there remains a lack of theoretical models for predicting the coal mining-induced surface subsidence during the initial, active, and decline stages. Given this, this study derived the time-varying exponential function of the ratio of maximum to dynamic surface subsidence first using measured data from seven coal mines. Accordingly, an improved Knothe time function model was established. Then, the impacts of the model parameters on dynamic surface subsidence W(t), subsidence velocity v(t), and subsidence acceleration a(t) were analyzed. Subsequently, based on the improved Knothe model and the critical …

Positive And Negative Pressure Distributions And Gas Migration Mechanisms Under Gas Drainage From Coal Seams Using Ultra-Long Directional Boreholes, Li Quanxin, Zhao Yuechen, Mou Quanbin, Wang Liang, Fang Jun, Wang Chenghao

Coal Geology & Exploration

Background Gas drainage via ultra-long directional boreholes plays a significant role in gas control in coal mines. To ensure safe and efficient gas drainage using these boreholes, it is critical to determine the mechanisms behind positive- negative pressure coupling, as well as the dominant mechanisms governing gas migration. However, the evolutionary patterns of positive-negative pressure zoning within the boreholes and the primary factors influencing gas drainage efficiency have yet to be accurately characterized. Methods Under the engineering background of the Shendong Baode Coal Mine, this study developed a multi-field coupling model integrating diffusion, seepage, and in-borehole flow fields based on …

Conics Through Inequivalent 5-Arcs In Pg(2, 32), Zainab Abbas Khalaf, Emad Bakr Al-Zangana

Baghdad Science Journal

A k-arcs is usually defined to be a set of k points in the projective plane such that some lines meets K in two points. A conic is an irreducible plane quadric curve with six terms. The first aim of the paper is to find the projectively inequivalent 5-arcs and 6-arcs in the finite projective plane over the Galois field of order two, and find the subgroups of PGL( 3,32 ) that are fixing these arcs. The second aim is to determine the conics form that passes through these 5-arcs and 6-arcs, and then parameterized. As an application to our …

On Graded Strongly J_Gr^Soc-2-Absorbing Submodules, Malak Alnimer, Khaldoun Al-Zoubi

Baghdad Science Journal

Let $\mathfrakB$ be a graded commutative ring with unity, and let $\mathfrakW$ be a graded unital $\mathfrakB$-module. This study introduces and develops the concept of graded strongly $J_gr^Soc$-2-absorbing submodules, a natural extension of graded $J_gr$-2-absorbing submodules within the framework of graded module theory. The motivation for this generalization stems from the need to better capture the interplay between graded algebraic structures and the behaviors of certain radicals and socles under graded operations. A properly graded submodule $N$ of $\mathfrakW$ is defined as a graded strongly $J_gr^Soc$-2-absorbing submodule if, for all $b,uin h( \mathfrakB )$ and $cin h( \mathfrakW )$, the …

Implementing A Problem-Solving Framework In Physics Tutorials For Upper-Division Electricity And Magnetism Students, James C. Hecht

Undergraduate Honors Theses

We study the effects of implementing a problem-solving framework in tutorials intended for use in upper-division electricity and magnetism courses. These tutorials were integrated into an electricity and magnetism course in Fall 2024, and were compared alongside a set of tutorials on the same topics which did not include the problem-solving framework. We performed a mixed-methods analysis on exam scores, interviews, and survey responses from students who were in the class. Students seem to prefer the tutorials that implement the problem-solving framework, and these tutorials seem to assist students with conceptual understanding somewhat; however, the qualitative data on conceptual understanding …

Objectives and Methods The YQ mining area in the Qinshui Basin is characterized by complex seismic and geological conditions, as well as well-developed collapse columns and flexure structures. Consequently, conventional three-dimensional (3D) seismic exploration fails to meet the precision requirements for safe coal mining. By constructing a physical model based on the actual geological conditions of the study area, this study conducted forward modeling for the seismic responses of collapse columns under varying azimuths. Accordingly, the azimuthal anisotropy of the collapse columns were systematically analyzed. By employing a regular noise suppression technique based on curvelet transform, combined with prestack migration …

First-Order Axial Perturbation Of The Reissner–Nordström Metric Against A Possible Parity-Violating Gravity Background, Abhishek Rout, Brett David Altschul Mar 2026

First-Order Axial Perturbation Of The Reissner–Nordström Metric Against A Possible Parity-Violating Gravity Background, Abhishek Rout, Brett David Altschul

Faculty Publications

We study axial perturbations of Reissner–Nordström black holes within the general frame-work of parity-violating modified gravity theories. We derive the governing equations for a class of frame-dragging perturbations, focusing on the symmetry structure and radial dependence of the perturbed metric component, describing its behavior across three distinct regions: near the singularity (r → 0), between the inner and outer Reissner–Nordström horizons (r− < r < r+), and in the asymptotic exterior regime (r → ∞). Using a combination of analytical and numerical methods, we analyze the solutions for varying black hole charge-to-mass ratios (Q/M) and angular momentum parameters (l). Key findings include the suppression of perturbations by the electromagnetic field for higher Q/M; the emergence of radial resonance-like behavior for specific l values; and a high degree of symmetry for solutions in the extremal limit (Q/M ∼ 1), attributed to the AdS2 × S 2 near-horizon geometry. The WKB approximation is employed to study the high-l regime, revealing quantized radial resonance modes and singular behavior in the extremal limit. Additionally, we explore the role of boundary conditions and the possibility of a Chern–Simons field Θ as the source of the parity violation, showing that consistency and the behavior of the perturbations under time reversal demand a constant field (and thus no actually observable Chern–Simons effects) at leading order. These results provide a basis for further analysis of the stability and dynamical properties of charged black holes in parity-violating theories, with potential experimental signatures in gravitational wave observations.
