An Aza-Cyclophane Stacked In Racemic Columnar Assemblies: Whole-Molecule Disorder In A Two-Dimensional Solid Solution, M Zeller
Chemistry: Faculty Publications and Other Works
The oxime derivative of [1.1.1]cyclophane cyclotriveratrylene (CTV) was ring expanded utilizing a Beckmann rearrangement to provide a ten-membered N-acetyl macrocyclic amide that crystallizes as a chloroform monosolvate in columnar assemblies manifesting an unusual disorder within the crystal. Columns made up of this structure consist of infinite columnar assemblies of alternating D and L enantiomers and therefore necessarily are made up of a racemate, yet the chiralities of individual molecules in adjacent columns are independent of one another, leading to the overall formation of a two-dimensional solid solution. The random arrangement of the columns within the structure leads to the …
The Madoff Scandal, Market Regulatory Failure And The Business Education Of Lawyers, Robert J. Rhee
The Madoff Scandal, Market Regulatory Failure And The Business Education Of Lawyers, Robert J. Rhee
UF Law Faculty Publications
This essay suggests that a deficiency in legal education is a contributing cause of the regulatory failure. The most scandalous malfeasance of this new era, the Madoff Ponzi scheme, evinces the failure of improperly trained lawyers and regulators. It also calls into question whether the prevailing regulatory philosophy of disclosure is sufficient in a complex market. This essay answers an important question underlying these considerations: What can legal education do to better train business lawyers and regulators for a market that is becoming more complex. One answer, it suggests, is a simple one: law schools should teach a little more …

The Environmental Deficit: Applying Lessons From The Economic Recession, Christine A. Klein
UF Law Faculty Publications
In 2007, the nation entered its greatest financial downturn since the Great Depression of the 1930s. What followed was a period of national introspection. Although prescriptions for financial rescue varied widely in the details, a surprisingly broad consensus emerged as to the underlying pathology of the crisis. This Article explores three principal contributing factors and the lessons associated with each that make up this pathology. These factors include: rejecting rules through deregulation, trivializing risk through overly optimistic analyses, and overconsumption supported by reckless borrowing and lending practices.
The powerful lessons from this pathology, considered by a stunned nation in the …
What Do We Owe Future Generations?, Neil H. Buchanan
What Do We Owe Future Generations?, Neil H. Buchanan
UF Law Faculty Publications
In the United States, it is common for legal scholars, economists, politicians and others to claim that we are selfishly harming "our children and grandchildren" by (among many other things) running large government budget deficits. This article first asks two broad questions: (1) Do we owe future generations anything at all as a philosophical matter? and (2) If we do owe something to future generations, how should we balance their interests against our own? The short answers are "Probably" and "We really are not sure." Finding only general answers to these general questions, I then look specifically at U.S. fiscal …

This article discusses, and provides context to understand the significance of, the most important judicial decisions and administrative rulings and regulations promulgated by the Internal Revenue Service and Treasury Department during 2008 - and sometimes a little farther back in time if the authors find the item particularly humorous or outrageous. Most Treasury Regulations, however, are so complex that they cannot be discussed in detail and, anyway, only a devout masochist would read them all the way through; just the basic topic and fundamental principles are highlighted. Amendments to the Internal Revenue Code generally are discussed to the extent that …
Happiness, Efficiency, And The Promise Of Decisional Equity: From Outcome To Process, Jeffrey L. Harrison
Happiness, Efficiency, And The Promise Of Decisional Equity: From Outcome To Process, Jeffrey L. Harrison
UF Law Faculty Publications
This article explains why outcome-oriented goals like efficiency, happiness, or well-being are ultimately of limited use as goals for law. Part II places happiness research in the context of past efforts to assess efficiency standards. Part III outlines the schism between efficiency and happiness and examines whether they can be reconciled. Part IV discusses the problems of relying on direct measures of happiness. The concept of decisional equity is described and examined in Part V.

The Lived Experience Of Adolescents With Dyslexia, Josefine M. Garcia
The Lived Experience Of Adolescents With Dyslexia, Josefine M. Garcia
Master's Theses and Capstones
In this study, interviews with 8 adolescents between the ages of 13 and 16 were performed to explore how young people with dyslexia experienced school in terms of well-being, educational performance and challenges, self-esteem, peer relations, the roles of teachers and parents, and views on support. The elementary years of school seemed to be the most difficult for interviewees. While peer interactions were often seen as a crucial part of school, all students reported that they had experienced or feared ridicule from peers. Academic and personal self-esteem seemed low for all participants, and while many students saw their problems as …

The Pedagopticon: Other Eyes In The 21 St Century Classroom, Robert W. Sweeny
Journal of Social Theory in Art Education
The Pedagopticon is a revolutionary new technology that allows educators to do away with outdated methods of discipline and punishment. Fusing traditional optical equipment (eye, camera lens) with the latest in high-tech gear (digital camera, web linked connectivity), the 'Pedagopticon' is the future of teaching. It was once said that seasoned teachers had 'eyes in the back of their head.' Well, the scientists at 'technology is the devil' have taken this adage and made it real. Now, you can have eyes everywhere! No corner of your classroom is out of your gaze. The 'Pedagopticon' offers a full 360 degrees of …

Neglected In Their Transitions: Second Generation Muslim Youth Search For Support In A Context Of Islamaphobia, Mayida Zaal
Neglected In Their Transitions: Second Generation Muslim Youth Search For Support In A Context Of Islamaphobia, Mayida Zaal
Department of Teaching and Learning Scholarship and Creative Works
In the Netherlands, anxieties about immigrants, Islam, and the preservation of Dutch values have amplified fears of Muslim youth despite the public discourse of tolerance. While the burgeoning second-generation of Dutch-born Muslim youth faces discrimination in the public sphere, the labor market, and school, they search for services to support their efforts to navigate the formally tracked system of schooling. This dissertation reports on a year-long, qualitative study conducted in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. Research questions focused on second-generation Muslim youth (mostly of Moroccan origin) and their experiences in youth programs created to support their educational needs.
The study employed ethnographic …

We consider the matching polynomials of graphs whose edges have been cyclically labelled with the ordered set of t labels {x1, . . ., xt}.
We first work with the cyclically labelled path, with first edge label xi, followed by N full cycles of labels {x1, . . ., xt}, and last edge label xj . Let Φi,Nt+j denote the matching polynomial of this path. It satisfies the (τ, Δ)-recurrence: Φi,Nt+j = τΦi,(N−1) …

In this paper we provide an extension of the theory of descent of Ginzburg-Rallis-Soudry to the context of essentially symplectic representations, that is representations τ with the property that the exterior square L-function twisted by some Hecke character ω has a pole at s = 1. Our theory supplements the recent work of Asgari-Shahidi on the functorial lift from the general Spin groups GSpin2n+1 to GL2n.

Compact Uwb Antenna With I-Shaped Band-Notch Parasitic Element For Laptop Applications, Nakchung Choi, Changwon Jung, Joonho Byun, Frances J. Harackiewicz, Myun-Joo Park, Yong-Seek Chung, Taekyun Kim, Byungje Lee
Articles
A compact ultrawideband (UWB) antenna with a band-notch function is proposed for laptop applications. The band-notch function is realized by a half-wavelength parasitic element printed on the rear side of the substrate. The impedance bandwidth (VSWR < 2) of the antenna is 3.1 ~ 11.4 GHz (114%) with a notched frequency from 5.05 to 5.90 GHz. The antenna has a fairly good omnidirectional pattern, and the average gain is -3.0 ~ -1.2 dBi over the UWB frequency band except for the notched frequency band. The performance of the proposed antenna is confirmed by simulation and measurement results.
Economic Credit In Renaissance Florence, John Padgett, Paul D. Mclean
Economic Credit In Renaissance Florence, John Padgett, Paul D. Mclean
Working Papers
What were the social and institutional factors that led to, and reinforced, the
precocious emergence of Florentine commercial capitalism,3 especially in the domain of
international merchant-banking? The dominant stream of answers, emphasized by
economic historians and by economists, focuses on the invention in late-medieval and
Renaissance Italy of a variety of innovative business techniques – bills of exchange,
double-entry bookkeeping, partnership contracts, commercial courts. If these impressive
organizational inventions are interpreted as facets of a broader rise of impersonal market
rationality, then a tension emerges in Florentine, and indeed in European, historiography
between economic historians and the work of social …
Human Security Networks In The Indian Ocean Tsunami, Annelies Z. Kamran
Human Security Networks In The Indian Ocean Tsunami, Annelies Z. Kamran
Working Papers
This paper uses the methods of social network analysis to discover the structural patterns of cooperation that arose in response to a global human security problem. It does this by mapping compulsory and institutional power relations among actors of the construction of a human security transnational cooperative response network—the response to the Indian Ocean tsunami of December 26, 2004. By mapping the relationships at the system level of world politics, including individual states as well as intergovernmental organizations (IGOs), transnational nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) and/or think tanks, and transnational corporations (TNCs), this paper finds a third relation among these actors, namely, …

Good Edge, Bad Edge: How Network Structure Affects A Group’S Ability To Coordinate, Daniel P. Enemark, Mathew D. Mccubbins, Ramamohan Paturi, Nicholas Weller
Working Papers
Coordination is a core concern in social science. Problems as diverse as deciding where to go to dinner, what price to charge for a good or service, which political candidate to support or what regulatory policy to adopt all contain coordination as a core element. Most coordination problems arise among actors connected in a network, and these connections can both improve and impede a group’s ability to achieve coordination. To model how links influence coordination we distinguish between “constraining edges” that make coordination harder by reducing the number of equilibrium outcomes, and “redundant edges” that make coordination easier by merely …

Comparative Models Of Hydrocarbon Emissions For A Diesel Engine Operating At Constant Loads And Speeds, Dennis G. Watson, David R. Bostic, Tony V. Harrison
Articles
Linear multiple regression (LMR) and nonlinear polynomial network (NPN) models were developed from data collected from ISO 8178‐4 (1996) test cycle B‐type tests (ISO) and an expanded set of tests (EXP) to predict hydrocarbon (HC) emissions from a diesel engine. LMR using the ISO training data (R2 = 0.94) resulted in overfitting of the model as applied to the evaluation data (R2 = 0.49). LMR based on the expanded data (R2 = 0.68) was a better LMR model when applied to the evaluation data (R2 = 0.64). NPN using the expanded training data (R2 = 0.99) resulted in the best …

Substance P Increases Cell-Surface Expression Of Cd74 (Receptor For Macrophage Migration Inhibitory Factor): In Vivo Biotinylation Of Urothelial Cell-Surface Proteins, Katherine L. Meyer-Siegler, Shen-Ling Xia, Pedro L. Vera
Molecular Medicine Faculty Publications
Macrophage migration inhibitory factor (MIF), an inflammatory cytokine, and its receptor CD74 are upregulated by bladder inflammation. MIF-mediated signal transduction involves binding to cell-surface CD74, this study documents, in vivo, MIF-CD74 interactions at the urothelial cell surface. N-hydroxysulfosuccinimide biotin ester-labeled surface urothelial proteins in rats treated either with saline or substance P (SP, 40 μg/kg). The bladder was examined by histology and confocal microscopy. Biotinylated proteins were purified by avidin agarose, immunoprecipitated with anti-MIF or anti-CD74 antibodies, and detected with strepavidin-HRP. Only superficial urothelial cells were biotinylated. These cells contained a biotinylated MIF/CD74 cell-surface complex that was increased in …
