Journal Retrospective: Perspective From The Editors, Jacob D. Rawlins

Journal of Book of Mormon Studies

The Journal of Book of Mormon Studies was founded in 1992 to be a forum through which faithful LDS scholars could highlight their research on the historical, linguistic, cultural, and theological contexts of the Book of Mormon. Since its founding by Stephan D. Ricks, four other scholars have served as editors of this publication: John L. Sorenson, S. Kent Brown, Andrew H. Hedges, and Paul Y. Hoskisson. Under these scholars’ stewardship, the Journal has developed into the flagship publication of the Maxwell Institute. This article features not only the history of the Journal but also perspectives from each of the …

Proclaiming The Way In Japanese: The 1909 Translation Of The Book Of Mormon, Shinji Takagi

Journal of Book of Mormon Studies

The early twentieth century found the Japanese language in a state of flux—colloquial Japanese was very slowly beginning to replace classical written Japanese, whose grammar had remained relatively intact for centuries. At this time of change Elder Alma O. Taylor began his 1909 translation of the Book of Mormon. He choose initially to render the text into the colloquial style; however, prodded by his Japanese reviewers, Taylor quickly realized that no publicly praiseworthy translation could be made in colloquial Japanese. The choice to translate the Book of Mormon in the classical language, as well as to have successful Japanese author, …

Evidence Based Uncertainty Models And Particles Swarm Optimization For Multiobjective Optimization Of Engineering Systems, Kiran Kumar Annamdas

Open Access Dissertations

The present work develops several methodologies for solving engineering analysis and design problems involving uncertainties and evidences from multiple sources. The influence of uncertainties on the safety/failure of the system and on the warranty costs (to the manufacturer) are also investigated. Both single and multiple objective optimization problems are considered. A methodology is developed to combine the evidences available from single or multiple sources in the presence (or absence) of credibility information of the sources using modified Dempster Shafer Theory (DST) and Fuzzy Theory in the design of uncertain engineering systems. To optimally design a system, multiple objectives, such as …

Patterns Of Differential Involvement In Terrorist Activities: Evidence From Dhkp/C And Turkish Hezbollah, Ismail Yilmaz

Theses and Dissertations

This study examines the patterns of involvement in terrorist activities for the Revolutionary People’s Liberation Party/Front (DHKP/C) and Turkish Hezbollah members. The study is based on the assumption that terrorists differ in terms of their involvement in terrorist activities. In this sense, there are full-time and part-time terrorists. Full-time terrorists act professionally and do the assignments given by their commanders. Part-time terrorists, on the other hand, act on a non-professional basis and have their own motivations to participate in terrorist activities. For part-timers, there are various factors that may have an effect on their degree of involvement in terrorist activities. …

A Cultural Symbol Passes From The Scene: Ji Xianlin, Not Michael Jackson, Timothy B. Weston Jul 2009

A Cultural Symbol Passes From The Scene: Ji Xianlin, Not Michael Jackson, Timothy B. Weston

China Beat Blog: Archive 2008-2012

It’s been moving to watch the response in China to the July 11 death of renowned scholar, Ji Xianlin (1911-2009). While Ji’s unsurprising departure at the ripe old age of 98 has not brought quite the same flood tide of emotion and cultural stock taking in China as Michael Jackson’s completely unexpected death a few weeks earlier at age 50 has in the United States and around the world, the way the venerable scholar is being remembered in Beijing is nevertheless remarkable. Long lines of people wishing to pay their last respects waited for hours to gain entrance to a …

Translated Opinions

Facts: Four widows who had each been receiving either a dependents allowance or a survivors allowance in accordance with the provisions of the National Insurance Law [Consolidated Version], 5755-1995, received notices from the National Insurance Institute indicating that their allowances had been discontinued — as of the time that the Institute had determined that each had begun living together with a new partner in a common-law marriage. After the relevant regional labour courts ruled in favor of the petitioners, the National Labour Court upheld the discontinuation of the allowances for all of them.

Held: The National Labour Court’s decision involved …

Mythcon Programs

Welcome to the 40th Annual Mythopoeic Conference

As I returned home from Mythcon 38 in Berkeley two years ago, I thought about how the Society had not had a Southern California Mythcon for several years. It seemed important to me that for this special anniversary conference that we return to the territory where the Society began. One thing led to another, and I ended up volunteering to chair this conference.

Individual Differences In Anterior Eeg Asymmetry In Children With High Functioning Autism, Anne Pradella Inge Jul 2009

Individual Differences In Anterior Eeg Asymmetry In Children With High Functioning Autism, Anne Pradella Inge

Open Access Dissertations

This study examined the moderating role of motivational tendencies for social approach and avoidance behavior, as measured by anterior EEG asymmetry, on symptom expression. In particular, this study aimed to replicate and extend previous findings that measures of anterior EEG asymmetry provide an important marker of subgroups of HFA children that significantly differ from each other, and controls, on measures of social communication impairment. EEG data were collected across two occasions on 51 HFA and 44 non-HFA children. EEG asymmetry was computed for homologous electrode pairs (e.g., lnF4-lnF3). More positive scores were indicative of relative left frontal asymmetry. Data on …

Modeling The Parasympathetic Nervous Response To An Emotional Task: The Interaction Of Heart Rate Variability, Personality And Emotion Regulation, Lindsey Marie Root Jul 2009

Modeling The Parasympathetic Nervous Response To An Emotional Task: The Interaction Of Heart Rate Variability, Personality And Emotion Regulation, Lindsey Marie Root

Open Access Dissertations

Heart rate variability (HRV), a physiological marker of autonomic nervous system (ANS) engagement, has been associated with a wide variety of clinical and psychological processes. High frequency (HF) HRV power, specifically, has been linked with the parasympathetic nervous system (PNS) and self-regulation. The current inquiry used a random effects growth model to study the HF HRV response to an emotional task and to predict individual differences in HF HRV as a function of trait hostility, neuroticism, and emotion regulation strategies (e.g., positive reappraisal, positive refocusing). Results indicated that the task engaged both branches of the ANS. HF HRV was not …

The Epistemic Qualities Of Quantum Transformation, Jonathan Edward Skalski Jul 2009

The Epistemic Qualities Of Quantum Transformation, Jonathan Edward Skalski

Theses and Dissertations

Growth and development are central constituents of the human experience. Although the American Psychological Association aims to understand change and behavior in ways that embrace all aspects of experience (APA, 2008), sudden, life-altering or quantum transformation has been disregarded throughout the history of psychology until recently (see Miller & C' de Baca, 1994, 2001). Quantum transformation is similar to self-surrender conversion (James, 1902), but different from peak experiences (Maslow, 1964) and near death experiences (Lorimer, 1990) because quantum transformation, by definition, involves lasting change. Quantum transformation contains epistemic qualities, which refer to the content and process of knowing (Miller & …

How Alaska Natives Learn And Changes To Alaska Education That Would Ensure Success: A Review Of The Literature, Sally Woods Kookesh

Special Education Masters Program Theses

I have examined 47 articles that related to Alaska Native/American Indian education and culturally responsive education. I found problems in K-12 education for Alaska Natives; historical contexts; cultural context; building bridges; and the future for K-12 education for Alaska Natives were common themes throughout my review of the literature. Problems with education was established 200 years ago and Alaska Natives still perform lower than their non-Native counterparts; historical context tells a story of past Native educational and mainstream practices; cultural context can play a positive role in closing the achievement gap through language, culture, and involving the community; building bridges …

Effects Of Multimedia Glossary Annotations On Incidental Vocabulary Acquisition In L2 Learners Of Japanese, Brian Gleason James Jul 2009

Effects Of Multimedia Glossary Annotations On Incidental Vocabulary Acquisition In L2 Learners Of Japanese, Brian Gleason James

Theses and Dissertations

In recent years, advances in computer technology have allowed increasingly rich multimedia content to be incorporated into educational materials in many fields, including the field of language teaching. Yet as visually appealing as such products may be, we must ask whether multimedia-enriched materials actually improve learning in a measurable way. If so, individual curriculum makers can then decide whether the benefits of the multimedia materials justify the cost of purchasing and implementing them. This study attempted to examine the effects of multimedia glossary aids on incidental vocabulary acquisition rates of L2 learners of Japanese. Subjects included 35 third- and fourth-year …

Speech Recognition Software For Language Learning: Toward An Evaluation Of Validity And Student Perceptions, Deborah Cordier

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

A renewed focus on foreign language (FL) learning and speech for communication has resulted in computer-assisted language learning (CALL) software developed with Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR). ASR features for FL pronunciation (Lafford, 2004) are functional components of CALL designs used for FL teaching and learning. The ASR features available with the TeLL me More French software provides pronunciation, intonation and speaking practice and feedback. ASR features are examined quantitatively through French student performance of recorded ASR-scored speech and compared with human raters of the same produced speech samples. A comparison of ASR scores to human raters considers the validity of …

Standing In The Center Of The World: The Ethical Intentionality Of Autoethnography, Nicole Wilkes Jul 2009

Standing In The Center Of The World: The Ethical Intentionality Of Autoethnography, Nicole Wilkes

Theses and Dissertations

Emmanuel Levinas's philosophy of ipseity and alterity has permeated Western thought for more than forty years. In the social sciences and the humanities, the recognition of the Other and focus on difference, alterity, has influenced the way we ethically approach peoples and arts from different cultures. Because focus on the ego, ipseity, limits our ethical obligations, focusing on the Other does, according to Levinas, bring us closer to an ethical life. Furthermore, the self maintains responsibility for the Other and must work within Levinas's ethical system to become truly responsible. Therefore, the interaction between self and Other is Levinas's …
