Exploring The Mathematical Thinking Of Bilingual Primary-Grade Students: Cgi Problem Solving From Kindergarten Through 2nd Grade, Mary Elisabeth Marshall

Language, Literacy, and Sociocultural Studies ETDs

This study explores the mathematical thinking of native Spanish-speaking, primary-grade Latina/o students learning in bilingual classrooms where the majority of their mathematics instruction has been in Spanish. Guided by sociocultural theory, which emphasizes the important connection between language and conceptual development (Mahn, 2008; Sfard, 2001; Van Oers, 2001; Zack & Graves, 2001), and the theory and methods of Cognitively Guided Instruction [CGI] (Carpenter, Ansell, Franke, Fennema & Weisbeck, 1993; Carpenter, Fennema & Franke, 1994; Carpenter, Fennema & Franke, 1996; Carpenter, Fennema, Franke, Levi & Empson, 1999; Fennema, Franke, Carpenter & Carey, 1993; Turner, Celedón-Pattichis & Marshall, 2008), data were collected …

The Impact Of Indian Gaming On Educational Attainment, Poverty Among Native American Tribes, Aaron Diaz Aug 2009

The Impact Of Indian Gaming On Educational Attainment, Poverty Among Native American Tribes, Aaron Diaz

Sociology ETDs

What is the impact of Indian gaming on educational attainment among Native American tribes? Is there a correlation between Indian gaming and poverty rates? Utilizing a combination of cross-sectional analysis and longitudinal case studies, I examine whether Indian gaming has an impact on educational attainment. I also explore the economic mechanism of how this effect occurs. I analyze the 1990 and 2000 census data in addition to raw data collected from the National Indian Gaming Commission website, which provided the year selected Native American tribes were approved to pursue the establishment of gaming on their reservations. No significance was recorded …

Beloved Savages And Other Outsiders: Genre And Gender Transgressions In The Travel Writings Of Herman Melville, Bayard Taylor, And Charles Warren Stoddard, Kelvin Ray Beliele Aug 2009

Beloved Savages And Other Outsiders: Genre And Gender Transgressions In The Travel Writings Of Herman Melville, Bayard Taylor, And Charles Warren Stoddard, Kelvin Ray Beliele

English Language and Literature ETDs

"'My dissertation is a study of the travel writings of three nineteenth-century American authors, Herman Melville, Bayard Taylor, and Charles Warren Stoddard. I argue that these writers evinced a rebellion encompassing literary as well as political and social subversion. In order to succeed in their rebellion, they relied upon genre transgression, the violation of the traditions and conventions of a particular genre, to convey defiant social opinions. They were demonstrative in voicing their critiques of American sexual, religious, and racial dogmas in their travel fiction and poetry. These three authors violated genre boundaries in most of their works, but especially …

Toward A Visual Paideia: Visual Rhetoric In Undergraduate Writing Programs, Candice Welhausen Aug 2009

Toward A Visual Paideia: Visual Rhetoric In Undergraduate Writing Programs, Candice Welhausen

English Language and Literature ETDs

New media and digital texts of the twenty-first century are generally characterized as rich and dynamic combinations of verbal, visual, and aural elements. Instruction in visual rhetoric in the writing classroom, however, has tended to focus on analysis with far less emphasis on teaching students how to produce multimodal texts. Drawing upon classical rhetorical theory, I propose the development of a visual paideia grounded in the educational goals of the Greco-Roman paideia to incorporate richly balanced instruction in both analysis and production of visual-dominant texts. I approach the development of a visual paideia via examining the current state of visual …

An Exploratory Study Of Transracial Adoptions : African American Perspectives, Tarn Carolyn Martin

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

This study was undertaken to determine if what the National Association of Black Social Workers states; that African American children raised by Caucasian adults are at risk for being outcast by the African American community. The NABSW believes that transracial adoptees are not able to develop a healthy sense of self when raised by Caucasians. For this study I interviewed 8 participants who identify as African American who were between the ages of 18-47. The participants were asked a series of questions in regards to their development and how they have fared being raised by Caucasian parents. Most of the …

The Feasibility Of Dialogue Writing With Patients Who Have An Eating Disorder, Andrea Lynn Harbeck Aug 2009

The Feasibility Of Dialogue Writing With Patients Who Have An Eating Disorder, Andrea Lynn Harbeck

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

This study emerged from the creation of dialogue writing, a new intervention for the treatment of eating disorders. A nascent intervention, the study investigated its feasibility as a form of treatment for eating disorders; specifically the study gathered data regarding the participant's experience with dialogue writing. The dialogue writing process involves writing a dialogue between the self and the eating disorder as personified in a character created by the participant. Nine women receiving treatment for eating disorders at a clinic participated in a group setting in the dialogue writing exercise, which was administered by the groups' regular facilitator. Although the …

The Effect Of Active Techniques Combined With Didactic Lecture On Student Achievement, Melissa Martin

Student Theses and Dissertations

The objective of this study is to investigate the effect of active teaching methods combined with didactic lecture versus lecture alone. This project compared two sections of physical science at a community college. The study was conducted for two 15-week semesters. The control groups were taught by didactic lecture alone and the experimental groups were instructed using active techniques combined with the traditional didactic lecture. The hypothesis for this study is that the active learning sections will achieve higher scores than the passive learning sections. Data was collected from pre/post test results, chapter exams, and end-of-course final grades. The data …

A Discontinuous Space : Postmodern Perspectives On Mental Health Discourse, Jennifer Leigh Harrison Aug 2009

A Discontinuous Space : Postmodern Perspectives On Mental Health Discourse, Jennifer Leigh Harrison

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

Language in the mental health field is rich with powerful metaphors, hyperbolic phrases, and linguistic symbols of historical, political and social meaning. At a closer look, a dominant discourse rooted deep in the grounds of empirical science is revealed. In this theoretical study, mental health language is deconstructed using Critical Discourse Analysis and other related theories to locate and analyze a dominant discourse, which opens space for a non-dominant discourse. Postmodern theory assumes that power, entangled with and interdependent on powerlessness, is an absolute phenomenon, and that power abuse can be revealed through the study of a discourse itself. The …

Strategy And Power In Contemporary Clinical Practice : A Theoretical Examination Of Family Preservation Philosophy And Strategic Family Therapy In The Context Of Poverty, Emily Erchick Aug 2009

Strategy And Power In Contemporary Clinical Practice : A Theoretical Examination Of Family Preservation Philosophy And Strategic Family Therapy In The Context Of Poverty, Emily Erchick

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

This theoretical study reviewed family therapy and child welfare literature in the context of poverty. Clinical practice with low-income families was investigated historically. The literature brought to life issues of clinical power and aspects of social control and social reform inherent in direct practice. A consideration of family preservation philosophy and strategic family therapy was proposed. In describing these two schemas separately, their synthesis was eventually formulated and supported. The larger history of ideas that emerged yielded an epistemological discrepancy between models of practice in the field of family therapy. These discrepancies were further exaggerated by issues of policy, funding, …

The Language Of Mathematics: Virginia Standards Of Learning Mathematical Pictionary For Grades K-3., Amanda Rashelle Collins-Browning

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

My experience teaching in Virginia schools, pacing and aligning instruction to the Virginia Standards of Learning, caused me to recognize the need for a mathematics tool to simplify and transition K-3 mathematics vocabulary usage and instruction. The language of mathematics uses three linguistic tools: words, symbols, and diagrams. Within this thesis I developed an instructional tool, a "Mathematics Pictionary", to accommodate primary grades K-3 and transition mathematical language and vocabulary skills between the primary grades aligned to the instruction and guidelines of the Virginia Standards of Learning. The Pictionary may be used coherently with lesson plans, available from the Virginia …

The Impact Of Socioeconomic Status On The Neural Substrates Associated With Pleasure, Michael E. Silverman, Peter Muennig, Xun Liu, Zohn Rosen, Martin A. Goldstein Aug 2009

The Impact Of Socioeconomic Status On The Neural Substrates Associated With Pleasure, Michael E. Silverman, Peter Muennig, Xun Liu, Zohn Rosen, Martin A. Goldstein

Publications and Research

Low socio-economic status (SES) is associated with increased morbidity and premature mortality. Because tonic adversity relates to a diminished ability to experience pleasure, we hypothesized that subjects living in poverty would show diminished neural responsivity to positive stimuli in regions associated with positive experience and reward. Visual images were presented to twenty-two subjects in the context of a EPI-BOLD fMRI paradigm. Significant differences in neural responses between SES groups to poverty vs. neutral images were assessed, examining group, condition, and interaction effects. The data suggest that persons living in low-SES have neural experiences consistent with diminished interest in things generally …

Solving Conflict In Academic Contexts: A Comparison Of U.S. And Taiwanese College Students, Li-Jung Huang Aug 2009

Solving Conflict In Academic Contexts: A Comparison Of U.S. And Taiwanese College Students, Li-Jung Huang

Theses

In today’s globalized society with intense interaction between and among cultures, cross cultural understanding is becoming of crucial importance for successful communication. Whenever there is communication among people from different cultures, disagreement, argument and interpersonal conflict may occur. For this reason, the study of cultural differences in conflict resolution is of great value to society at large. Yet, the number of studies that have examined conflict resolution approaches across cultures is insufficient.

This study sought to contribute to this area of research by investigating conflict resolution strategies employed by US and Taiwanese college students in academic contexts and the motives …

Artificial Intelligence – I: Subjective Decision Making Using Type-2 Fuzzy Logic Advisor, Owais Malik Aug 2009

Artificial Intelligence – I: Subjective Decision Making Using Type-2 Fuzzy Logic Advisor, Owais Malik

International Conference on Information and Communication Technologies

In this paper, we present and compare two-stage type-2 fuzzy logic advisor (FLA) for subjective decision making in the domain of students' performance evaluation. We test our proposed model for evaluating students' performance in our computer science and engineering department at HBCC/KFUPM in two domains namely cooperating training and capstone/senior project assessment where we find these FLAs very useful and promising. In our proposed model, the assessment criteria for different components of cooperative training and senior project are transformed into linguistic labels and evaluation information is extracted into the form of IF-THEN rules from the experts. These rules are modeled …
