Length: 57 minutes

Oral history interview of Cheryl Johnson-Odim by Carrie Armbruster

Johnson-Odim describes her introduction to South African Apartheid in junior high school through her music teacher, S. Carol Buchanan, who was good friends with the musical director for Harry Belafonte. After auditioning and being chosen to sing on his album, “The Streets I’ve Walked,” Belafonte took Johnson and the other singers to watch South African Boot Dancers, who later went to teach the students about the apartheid regime in South Africa. Understanding Human Services Utilization: Opportunities For Data Sharing Between Federally Funded Programs, Nancy C. Shank Oct 2009

Understanding Human Services Utilization: Opportunities For Data Sharing Between Federally Funded Programs, Nancy C. Shank

Nancy Shank Publications

In communities across the United States, social service clients face uncoordinated systems of care and delays in services when their information cannot easily be shared among providers. Social service agencies face challenges in sharing information on clients and services between disparate information systems and inefficiencies when multiple, stand-alone systems are used to satisfy operational, funding, or reporting requirements.

This cataloging project arose from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s (HUD’s) interest to document standards that may be of relevance to its community partners, particularly those partners working to support local homeless, housing, and community development activities and build …

In Defense Of Ideology: A Principled Apporach To The Supreme Court Confirmation Process, Lori A. Ringhand Oct 2009

In Defense Of Ideology: A Principled Apporach To The Supreme Court Confirmation Process, Lori A. Ringhand

William & Mary Bill of Rights Journal

In this paper, Professor Ringhand offers a principled defense of an ideological approach to the Supreme Court Justice confirmation process. In constructing her argument, she does three things. First, she explores how the insights provided by recent empirical legal scholarship have created a need to rethink the role of the Supreme Court and, consequently, the process by which we select Supreme Court Justices. In doing so, Professor Ringhand explains how these insights have called into question much of our conventional constitutional narrative, and how this failure of the conventional narrative has in turn undermined traditional objections to an ideologically-based confirmation …

Flarr Pages #67: The Understanding Of The Concept Fact In Modern English (The Research Is Based On The English-Language Textbooks), Roza Rokhvadze

Linguistics in a narrow sense is always interested in language. The language can be observed from different levels: level of text, sentence and word. These levels in their tern are considered from the viewpoint of pragmatics, semantics, cognitive meaning, syntax, grammar, etc. The word, according to Ferdinand de Saussure, is the smallest speech unit It seems to be nothing confusing with words, as their meanings are given in dictionaries and their syntactical functions are defined even by Aristotle. But we know that language has its dynamic process - it changes in all aspects. With the technical progress and cutting-edge society …

Review [Of Peter Rawlings' Henry James And The Abuse Of The Past], Sarah Wadsworth

English Faculty Research and Publications

[...] the "abuse of the past" becomes in James's hands "an art of fiction and the framework of an autobiography" (67-68). According to Rawlings, "Henry James's late fiction specializes in constructing, within the volatile framework of philosophies of time then current, decadent mutations of America's vanishing dreamers, characters arrested . . . by the forlorn realization that 'we shall never be again as we were!'" (141-42).

Realizing Students’ Every Day Realities: Community Analysis As A Model For Social Justice, Jeanette Haynes Writer, H. Prentice Baptiste Oct 2009

Realizing Students’ Every Day Realities: Community Analysis As A Model For Social Justice, Jeanette Haynes Writer, H. Prentice Baptiste

Journal of Praxis in Multicultural Education

This article examines the implications and effect of the Community Analysis (CA) Project assignment that we utilize in the Multicultural Education (MCE) course1 at New Mexico State University, located in Las Cruces, New Mexico. The CA enables pre-service teachers to critically examine, through a social justice lens, the manifestations and intersectionalities of race, class, gender, sexual orientation, language, ability, and religion in PreK-12 students’ communities, which may be rejected and ignored, or embraced, serving to connect students’ lives to learning contexts and opportunities in their schools. The CA compels pre-service teachers to analyze systemic inequities and inequalities in communities which …

Making Homework Count: Homework As A Collective Task For Language Minority Families, Kathy R. Fox Oct 2009

Making Homework Count: Homework As A Collective Task For Language Minority Families, Kathy R. Fox

Journal of Praxis in Multicultural Education

In response to a writing prompt asking, “What can parents do to ensure academic success for their child?” a mother with three children under the age of six wrote: “In my opinion he needs motivation from his parents and interest in his homework. [He needs] to read a lot so he will have good confidence with his friends and about everything, about his teacher.” This response was typical of those given by participants in a family literacy program (FLP) sponsored by a small urban school district. This program was originally designed to help minority language and culture parents learn functional …

Podcasting: An Effective Tool For Honing Language Students' Pronunciation?, Lara Ducate, Lara Lomicka

Faculty Publications

This paper reports on an investigation of podcasting as a tool for honing pronunciation skills in intermediate language learning. We examined the effects of using podcasts to improve pronunciation in second language learning and how students' attitudes changed toward pronunciation over the semester. A total of 22 students in intermediate German and French courses made five scripted pronunciation recordings throughout the semester. After the pronunciation recordings, students produced three extemporaneous podcasts. Students also completed a pre- and post-survey based on Elliott's (1995) Pronunciation Attitude Inventory to assess their perspectives regarding pronunciation. Students' pronunciation, extemporaneous recordings, and surveys were analyzed to …

Reconfiguring The Borderlands Of Identity: Preparing Social Justice Educators, Anita E. Fernandez Oct 2009

Reconfiguring The Borderlands Of Identity: Preparing Social Justice Educators, Anita E. Fernandez

Journal of Praxis in Multicultural Education

This article offers multiple pedagogical approaches for mobilizing Gloria Anzaldúa's metaphor of borderlands to prepare social justice educators to address issues of justice and equity in increasingly diverse classroom settings. It describes an experiential course in multicultural education, including innovative processes through which Education students analyze the borderlands of identity, society, and geography through critical self-analysis, fieldwork, and social action. By investigating the intersectionality of social justice issues and the social construction of identity, students attempt to transform the borders of their own identities and engage in action projects to begin a process of bridging the edges of cultural inequity.

Semantic Context Transfer Across Heterogeneous Sources For Domain Adaptive Video Search, Yu-Gang Jiang, Chong-Wah Ngo, Shih-Fu Chang Oct 2009

Semantic Context Transfer Across Heterogeneous Sources For Domain Adaptive Video Search, Yu-Gang Jiang, Chong-Wah Ngo, Shih-Fu Chang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Automatic video search based on semantic concept detectors has recently received significant attention. Since the number of available detectors is much smaller than the size of human vocabulary, one major challenge is to select appropriate detectors to response user queries. In this paper, we propose a novel approach that leverages heterogeneous knowledge sources for domain adaptive video search. First, instead of utilizing WordNet as most existing works, we exploit the context information associated with Flickr images to estimate query-detector similarity. The resulting measurement, named Flickr context similarity (FCS), reflects the co-occurrence statistics of words in image context rather than textual …

Retribution's Role, John Bronsteen Oct 2009

Retribution's Role, John Bronsteen

Indiana Law Journal

Two main types of principle, retributive and consequentialist, have long been identified as the main approaches to justifying criminal punishment. Retributivists deem punishment justified by the wrongdoing of the offender, whereas utilitarians deem it justified by its good consequences such as deterring future crime. Over the past fifty years, each has spent decades as the dominant theory, and many hybrid theories have also been advanced. But few, if any, of the hybrid approaches have valued heavily both retributive and consequentialist considerations while locating the particular justificatory role each category plays. This Article points in that direction by reframing the central …

Preparing Tomorrow’S World Language Teacher Today: The Case For Seamless Induction, Paul A. Garcia, Todd A. Hernandez, Patricia Davis-Wiley

Spanish Languages and Literatures Research and Publications

This essay is a call to action. It offers a comprehensive overview of the challenges facing world language (WL) teacher educators and their employers, the K-12 schools, during the teacher induction period. We propose a new paradigm for WL teacher education based on national accreditation standards, best-practice pedagogy, insights from the professional literature on methods education, and the enhanced role of the methods instructor/supervisor. In order to become successful in the classroom, the pre-service educator undergoes a seamless period of induction that is student-centered and college/university-supported beyond the classroom arena.

Burma In Strategic Perspective: Renewing Discussion Of Options, Lewis M. Stern, George Thomas, Julia A. Thompson Oct 2009

Burma In Strategic Perspective: Renewing Discussion Of Options, Lewis M. Stern, George Thomas, Julia A. Thompson

Strategic Forums

U.S. policy has sought to nudge the junta in Burma toward a more reasonable approach to its dilemma, either in the form of managing Aung San Suu Kyi’s house arrest in a semitransparent fashion, allowing the release of imprisoned prodemocracy activists and the National League for Democracy cadre, agreeing to visits from United Nations special representatives, or accepting regional advice and guidance at critical moments. But Burma is a minuet dramatizing the “one step forward, two steps backward” description of progress. Even as the administration of President Barack Obama commits itself in principle to reaching out to Burma, events conspire …
