The Design And Development Of An Additive Fabrication Process And Material Selection Tool, Andrew Palmer

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In the Manufacturing Industry there is a subset of technologies referred to as Rapid Technologies which are those technologies that create the ability to compress the time to market for new products under development . Of this subset, Additive Fabrication (AF), or more commonly known as Rapid Prototyping (RP), acquires much attention due to its unique and futuristic approach to the production of physical parts directly from 3D CAD data, CT or MRI scans, or data from laser scanning systems by utilizing various techniques to consecutively generate cross-sectional layers of a given thickness upon the previous layer to form 3D …

An Uncertain Place In Uncertain Times: The South Caucasus, Nathan Burns Jan 2009

An Uncertain Place In Uncertain Times: The South Caucasus, Nathan Burns

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this research is to address how geopolitical factors influence the foreign policies of states in the South Caucasus. Due to the recent Russia-Georgia War, this region is central to contemporary foreign policy, fueling discussions of a New Cold War between the US and Russia. With the explicit goal to provide policy relevant research on this critical region, the South Caucasus states (Azerbaijan, Armenia, and Georgia) are examined in three separate case studies. Utilizing qualitative analysis of historical event data, each case examines the role of five different variables: energy resources, routes, demography, proximity, and state leadership. That …

Examining The General Quality Of Early Childhood Education And Structural Variables In Support Of Early Childhood Inclusion In Beijing, China, Bi Ying Hu

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The primary purpose of this study was to (a) explore the global quality of early childhood programs within the Chinese socio-cultural context, and (b) examine the effects of teachers' years of experience, degree, major, and class size on teachers' perceptions of developmentally appropriate practices, inclusion, and training needs in order to provide services for children with disabilities in regular classrooms. The researcher completed observations in 40 early childhood classrooms using the Early Childhood Environment Rating Scale- Revised (ECERS-R). Results from classroom observations revealed that the global quality of the early childhood learning environment was between minimum and good. Areas that …

Protecting Gun Rights And Improving Gun Control After District Of Columbia V. Heller, Allen K. Rostron Jan 2009

Protecting Gun Rights And Improving Gun Control After District Of Columbia V. Heller, Allen K. Rostron

Faculty Works

The Supreme Court’s decision in District of Columbia v. Heller, rejecting the narrow interpretation of the Second Amendment that most courts previously embraced, might seem to be a significant setback for gun control supporters and a major victory for gun rights advocates. Challenging that conventional wisdom, the author contends that Heller ultimately will help rather than hinder the push toward strong, sensible gun control laws. Justice Scalia’s opinion for the majority in Heller ultimately backs away from the most drastic implications of its reasoning and instead steers toward a more moderate approach under which virtually all existing gun laws should …

In Step With Hiv Vaccines? A Content Analysis Of Local Recruitment Campaigns For An International Hiv Vaccine Study, Paula M. Frew, Wendy Macias, Kayshin Chan, Ashley Harding

Environmental & Global Health Faculty Research

During the past two decades of the HIV/AIDS pandemic, several recruitment campaigns were designed to generate community involvement in preventive HIV vaccine clinical trials. These efforts utilized a blend of advertising and marketing strategies mixed with public relations and community education approaches to attract potential study participants to clinical trials (integrated marketing communications). Although more than 30,000 persons worldwide have participated in preventive HIV vaccine studies, no systematic analysis of recruitment campaigns exists. This content analysis study was conducted to examine several United States and Canadian recruitment campaigns for one of the largest-scale HIV vaccine trials to date (the “Step …

Maintaining Positive Attitudes Toward Science And Technology In First-Year Female Undergraduates ― Peril And Promise, Kenton Machina, Anu Gokhale

Faculty Publications - Philosophy

This study investigated attitude changes of 18-year-old first-year college students at a large state-operated institution in the US during their initial semester in college. Attitudes of 375 students enrolled in a non-science first-year student seminar during the Fall of 2004 were measured, using a new instrument designed to focus on five attitude constructs especially relevant to female engagement with science and technology (S & T).  The authors found that students whose seminar included visits with S & T professionals, plus at least four weeks of context-based S & T content, maintained modestly positive attitudes toward S & T.  Students whose …

Technology And Women's Lives: Queering Media Ethnography, Irmi Karl Jan 2009

Technology And Women's Lives: Queering Media Ethnography, Irmi Karl

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

This article offers a re-examination and re-articulation of ethnographic approaches towards the study of media audiences and the consumption and use of information and communication technologies (ICTs). In particular, it aims to highlight the challenges faced by researchers undertaking fieldwork in so-called familiar cultural settings. Based on insights gained from a longitudinal study into the ICT consumption practices of female-headed households in Brighton, UK, it seeks to re-vitalize the ethnographic imagination by asking: how can we, in an age of mobile media cultures, consolidate on- and offline encounters and overcome anxieties around boundary crossings expressed through the prevailing heteronormative frameworks …

Methodological Approaches To Studying The Social Monad: A Consideration Of Interdisciplinary Sociological Research, Christina Weber Jan 2009

Methodological Approaches To Studying The Social Monad: A Consideration Of Interdisciplinary Sociological Research, Christina Weber

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

In this paper, I explore the methodological considerations involved in conducting research on a historically traumatic event. By focusing on the rich set of social discourses at work within my case study of the Vietnam War, the research emphasized the generational impact of this historically traumatic event through interdisciplinary approach to sociological research. My research included a two-pronged data collection and analysis process. The first consisted of interviews I conducted with children of (male) Vietnam Veterans. The second consisted of textual analyses of film, television, and literature of the Vietnam War and Vietnam Veteran. In this paper I discuss the …

Teaching Strategies For Minorities And Students Of Low Socioeconomic Status, Theresa Birch Jan 2009

Teaching Strategies For Minorities And Students Of Low Socioeconomic Status, Theresa Birch

Graduate Research Papers

In teacher education classes across the country, future science educators are being prepared for their careers. They attend classes that claim to explain student behavior and how to effectively teach science. When they get into the real world and start teaching, many are shocked to learn exactly how much of their college education does not apply in their career. They are not prepared for the reality of the students in their classrooms. A growing number of students today come from homes that are different than those the teacher grew up in. According to Moore (2007), the minority population in today's …

Embargo Or Blockade? The Legal And Moral Dimensions Of The U.S. Economic Sanctions On Cuba, Berta E. Hernández-Truyol Jan 2009

Embargo Or Blockade? The Legal And Moral Dimensions Of The U.S. Economic Sanctions On Cuba, Berta E. Hernández-Truyol

UF Law Faculty Publications

The almost fifty-year old U.S. economic policy towards Cuba—the embargo that is the topic of this essay. Indeed, not even on the naming of the economic policy can the camps agree. To those antagonistic to the revolution the policy is an embargo - an economic sanction constituting a legitimate government action that legally restricts the flow of goods, services and capital to the island in order to try to influence the Castro regime into changing its undemocratic ways. Such lawful restrictions simply signal justifiable disapproval of another country's policy with the goal of changing the state's behavior that is perceived …

The Emergence Of Pragmatic Softeners In Spanish By Instructed Learners Of Spanish In The Study Abroad And Immersion Contexts, Catharine Welch Jan 2009

The Emergence Of Pragmatic Softeners In Spanish By Instructed Learners Of Spanish In The Study Abroad And Immersion Contexts, Catharine Welch

Linguistics & TESOL Dissertations - Archive

This dissertation explores and expands the term pragmatic softening as produced and perceived by L2 learners of Spanish. The learners included 36 intermediate-level learners studying in a U.S.-based immersion academy and those studying in a study-abroad context in Merida, Mexico. Preliminary evidence from these learners indicates that pragmatic softeners are rightly included in Anderson and Shirai's (1996) theory as a marginal member of the PAST category that is acquired after the more central member--the deictic past--has been acquired. Additionally, it is argued that the term pragmatic softening itself needs to be fleshed out so that it, too, is divided into …

Azerbaijani-Russian Code-Switching And Code-Mixing: Form, Function, And Identity, Kenneth Zuercher Jan 2009

Azerbaijani-Russian Code-Switching And Code-Mixing: Form, Function, And Identity, Kenneth Zuercher

Linguistics & TESOL Dissertations - Archive

From incorporation into the Russian Empire in 1828, through the collapse of the U.S.S.R. in 1991 governmental language policies and other socio/political forces influenced the Turkic population of the Republic of Azerbaijan to speak Russian. Even with changes since independence Russian use - including various kinds of code-switching and code-mixing - continues. This dissertation studies the language situation in Azerbaijan through a detailed analysis of naturally occurring conversational data. Approaches include corpus analysis of the transcribed data to show relative amounts of Azerbaijani and Russian, linguistic description of the types of code-switching and code-mixing, quantitative analysis of variation between subjects, …

A Longitudinal Analysis Of The Vocalic Nucleus In Modern Russian, Brett Alan Benham Jan 2009

A Longitudinal Analysis Of The Vocalic Nucleus In Modern Russian, Brett Alan Benham

Linguistics & TESOL Dissertations - Archive

This instrumental acoustic study investigates coarticulation as the source of palatalization in Modern Standard Russian. This study posits that the nucleus is bifurcated, with nodes for a pre-kernel and a kernel. At the initial edge of a stressed vowel, coarticulation between the pre-kernel and the kernel creates the distinctive onset, attributed to preceding palatalized environments. At the terminal edge of a stressed vowel, coarticulation between the kernel and the next vocalic segment (the offglide, or the pre-kernel of the following syllable) creates the distinctive offset, attributed to following palatalized environments. In unstressed syllables, the kernel vowel is deleted, and the …

Contextualizing Observational Data For Modeling Human Performance, Viet Trinh Jan 2009

Contextualizing Observational Data For Modeling Human Performance, Viet Trinh

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This research focuses on the ability to contextualize observed human behaviors in efforts to automate the process of tactical human performance modeling through learning from observations. This effort to contextualize human behavior is aimed at minimizing the role and involvement of the knowledge engineers required in building intelligent Context-based Reasoning (CxBR) agents. More specifically, the goal is to automatically discover the context in which a human actor is situated when performing a mission to facilitate the learning of such CxBR models. This research is derived from the contextualization problem left behind in Fernlund's research on using the Genetic Context Learner …

Data Entry Error In Mobile Keyboard Device Usage Subject To Cognitive, Environmental, And Communication Workload Stressors Present In Fully Activated Emergency Operations Centers, Samiullah Durrani Jan 2009

Data Entry Error In Mobile Keyboard Device Usage Subject To Cognitive, Environmental, And Communication Workload Stressors Present In Fully Activated Emergency Operations Centers, Samiullah Durrani

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The diversity and dynamic nature of disaster management environments necessitate the use of convenient, yet reliable, tools for technology. While there have been many improvements in mitigating the effects of disasters, it is clearly evident by recent events, such as Hurricane Katrina that issues related to emergency response and management require considerable research and improvement to effectively respond to these situations. One of the links in a disaster management chain is the Emergency Operations Center (EOC). The EOC is a physical command center responsible for the overall strategic control of the disaster response and functions as an information and communication …

From Constitution To Constitutionalism: A Global Framework For Legitimate Public Power Systems, Larry Catá Backer Jan 2009

From Constitution To Constitutionalism: A Global Framework For Legitimate Public Power Systems, Larry Catá Backer

Dickinson Law Review (1908-2003)

Academic and policy engagements with constitutions and constitutionalism have largely been built around unstated frameworks within which legitimated activity can take place. The essay suggests both the disorientation of much of the discussion and proposes an ideological framework that captures the assumptions about which constitutionalist discourse has evolved. Constitutionalism at one time could be said to involve the study of the peculiarities of the unique domestic constitutionalf ramework through which government was constituted and power institutionalized. No longer. This essay examines the current discourse of constitutionalism. That discourse reveals the current dynamic character of the concept. The old consensus of …
