Making Up The Difference: Ecuadorian Women Engaged In Direct Selling, Erynn Masi Casanova Jan 2009

Making Up The Difference: Ecuadorian Women Engaged In Direct Selling, Erynn Masi Casanova

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

As economic globalization progresses, employment is becoming more flexible and informalized in many parts of the world. In some developing countries, direct sales (selling branded products from person to person) is an increasingly attractive type of work, especially for women. Direct sales organizations benefit from cultural norms and structural forces that steer women away from full-time jobs in the formal economy, and also from the material conditions that lead to women's need to earn an income. This study examines the work experiences and social worlds of women affiliated with Ecuador's most successful direct sales company, Yanbal, with a focus on …

Degree Of Vocal Handicap In Two Age Groups Of Individuals, Whitney N. Casey-Heatherman Jan 2009

Degree Of Vocal Handicap In Two Age Groups Of Individuals, Whitney N. Casey-Heatherman

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

A healthy, functional voice is a critical aspect of daily life, allowing the expression of basic needs as well as interaction within an individual’s community. Unfortunately, for many adults the voice declines in later life. The purpose of this study was to investigate how normal vocal aging affects the quality of life of the elderly. Two hundred two adults without voice disorders from two age groups (30-50 and 65-85) completed the Voice Handicap Index. Results indicated that the older group felt a greater degree of vocal handicap than the younger age group [F (1,156) = 4.944, p = 0.028]. Implications …

C-Banded Karyotype And Nucleolar Organizer Regions (Nors) Of Wild Boar, Sus Scrofa (Artiodactyla: Suidae) From Anatolia, Ati̇lla Arslan, İrfan Albayrak

Turkish Journal of Biology

The present study reports the karyotype, C-banding, and nucleolar organizer regions (NORs) of 6 Sus scrofa (Linnaeus, 1758) males from Anatolia. The karyotype of S. scrofa comprised (2n) 38 chromosomes, the number of chromosomal arms (FN) was 64, and the number of autosomal arms (FNa) was 60. C-positive regions appeared to be restricted to the centromeric regions of autosomes 1, and 13-18, and the entire long arm of the Y chromosome. Some autosomes had very slight C-bands. The X chromosome appeared to be entirely euchromatic. NORs were identified by the silver-staining technique and were observed on secondary constriction sites of …

Geochemical And Mineralogical Characteristics Of Fe-Ni Laterite Ore Of Sarıçimen (Çaldıran-Van) Area In Eastern Anatolia, Turkey, Ali̇ Riza Çolakoğlu

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

The Sarıçimen Fe-Ni laterite ore is located 15 km east of Çaldıran County, northeast of Lake Van. This area is situated in the eastern Anatolia accretionary complex of Turkey, close to the Iran boundary. It is the first transported Fe-Ni rich laterite to be described from this area. This paper concentrates on the mineralogical and textural features of the ore minerals and the transported Fe-Ni laterite zone. These transported laterites are very inhomogeneous and contain very abundant zoned chromite grains, which have been altered to magnetite. SEM/probe investigations indicate that Fe-Ni is depleted in the core chromite and increases in …

Introduction (Special Cluster On The Catalan Stage, Modern And Contemporary), Sharon G. Feldman Jan 2009

Introduction (Special Cluster On The Catalan Stage, Modern And Contemporary), Sharon G. Feldman

Latin American, Latino and Iberian Studies Faculty Publications

At an international symposium devoted to the contemporary Catalan stage, which was held at the Institut del Teatre de la Diputació de Barcelona in 2005, director Toni Casares observed how the Catalan theater scene in its post-Franco evolution had, already endured a decade aimed at clarifying its cultural politics. "És l'epoca del teatre institucionalitzat o en vies d'institucionalització," he declared, referring to the decade comprising the years 1985 to 1995. It seemed an almost ironic observation at the time, as any attempt at institutionalization was certainly not a new endeavor for the Catalan theater scene; yet, Casares was also quick …

Two Decades Of "Alternative Entities": From Tax Rationalization Through Alphabet Soup To Contract As Deity, Daniel S. Kleinberger Jan 2009

Two Decades Of "Alternative Entities": From Tax Rationalization Through Alphabet Soup To Contract As Deity, Daniel S. Kleinberger

Faculty Scholarship

This essay: (i) puts into perspective the past 20 years of developments in the U.S. law of limited liability companies (LLCs), limited liability partnerships (LLPs), and limited liability limited partnerships (LLLPs); (ii) explains how a movement toward tax rationalization has been transformed into a palace coup aimed at fiduciary duty (a fundamental tenet of the U.S. law of closely held businesses); and (iii) criticizes both conceptually and pragmatically efforts to "kill Cardozo" and worship "freedom of contract."

The Constitutionalization Of Self-Defense In Tort And Criminal Law, Grammatically-Correct Originalism, And Other Second Amendment Musings, Alan Brownstein Jan 2009

The Constitutionalization Of Self-Defense In Tort And Criminal Law, Grammatically-Correct Originalism, And Other Second Amendment Musings, Alan Brownstein

UC Law Journal

The Supreme Court's opinion in Heller raises numerous questions. One of these is whether Heller requires the constitutionalization of self-defense decisions in tort and criminal law. Put simply, if the Second Amendment protects an individual's right "to keep and bear" the means to exercise self-defense, as Heller holds, can the Court avoid extending some level of constitutional protection to the act of self-defense itself? Answering this question in the affirmative leads to other issues. The justification of self-defense is grounded on an ad hoc evaluation of the reasonableness of the defendant's conduct. That analysis may be appropriate for tort or …

Effects Of Audibility And Multichannel Wide Dynamic Range Compression On Consonant Recognition For Listeners With Severe Hearing Loss, Evelyn Davies-Venn, Pamela Souza, Marc Brennan, G. Christopher Stecker

Department of Special Education and Communication Disorders: Faculty Publications

Objective—This study examined the effects of multichannel wide-dynamic range compression (WDRC) amplification and stimulus audibility on consonant recognition and error patterns.

Design—Listeners had either severe or mild-to-moderate sensorineural hearing loss. Each listener was monaurally fit with a wearable hearing aid using typical clinical procedures, frequency-gain parameters and a hybrid of clinically prescribed compression ratios for DSL (Scollie et al., 2005) and NAL-NL (Dillon, 1999). Consonant-vowel nonsense syllables were presented in soundfield at multiple input levels (50, 65, 80 dB SPL). Test conditions were four-channel fast-acting WDRC amplification and a control compression limiting (CL) amplification condition. Listeners identified the stimulus heard …

A Nonword Repetition Task For Speakers With Misarticulations: The Syllable Repetition Task (Srt), Lawrence D. Shriberg, Heather L. Lohmeier, Thomas F. Campbell, Christine A. Dollaghan, Jordan R. Green, Christopher A. Moore

Department of Special Education and Communication Disorders: Faculty Publications

Purpose. Conceptual and methodological confounds occur when non(sense) repetition tasks are administered to speakers who do not have the target speech sounds in their phonetic inventories or who habitually misarticulate targeted speech sounds. We describe a nonword repetition task, the Syllable Repetiton Task (SRT) that eliminates this confound and report findings from three validity studies.
Method. Ninety-five preschool children with Speech Delay and 63 with Typical Speech, completed an assessment battery that included the Nonword Repetition Task (NRT: Dollaghan & Campbell, 1998) and the SRT. SRT stimuli include only four of the earliest occurring consonants and …

The Willa Cather Archive In The Classroom, Andrew Jewell Jan 2009

The Willa Cather Archive In The Classroom, Andrew Jewell

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Libraries: Faculty Publications

This essay discusses many of the opportunities for teachers I believe are present in the Willa Cather Archive (http://cather.unl.edu), particularly in the way the Archive makes new materials available or older materials available in a new way. Additionally, this essay suggests some of the implications of the Archive’s digital presentation of resources. However, the place of digital scholarship in academic life is still evolving, and students and teachers are just getting accustomed to using the form. Given this circumstance, many of my thoughts are inconclusive, observations based upon preliminary understandings into how this resource affects our classrooms. I avoid confident …

Using Hlm To Analyze On-Going Teacher Professional Development And Implementation Of Scientific Classroom Discourse Community Strategies, Elizabeth B. Lewis, Dale R. Baker, Brandon Helding, Michael Lang

Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Presentations

One-hundred-and-sixty classroom observations of secondary science and language arts teachers were made throughout the 2007-2008 academic year to determine the extent of their use of professional development, specifically using strategies to construct a scientific classroom discourse community (SCDC). Each observation was scored using a 36-item instrument of various SCDC instructional strategies designed to match the professional development. These observation scores and teacher demographic information were used to build a hierarchical linear model to explore for statistically significant relationships over time. The length of time that the teachers received professional development was chosen as the exclusive predictor of teacher change because …

Intergenerational Spanish Transmission In El Paso, Texas: Parental Perceptions Of Cost/Benefit, M. Isabel Velázquez Jan 2009

Intergenerational Spanish Transmission In El Paso, Texas: Parental Perceptions Of Cost/Benefit, M. Isabel Velázquez

Spanish Language and Literature Papers

This study examines the beliefs held by a group of adult Spanish-English bilinguals from El Paso, Texas, regarding the vitality of Spanish in their community and the ways in which their own experience of being bilingual on the US-Mexico border has influenced their perceptions of the benefits and costs of fostering Spanish development in their children. Results show that parents’ positive attitudes toward Spanish did not translate into the investment of time and resources to foster Spanish development in their children nor, ultimately, into the use of Spanish by their children. Households where the mother perceived herself as having an …

Teacher Investment In Learner Identity, Jenelle Reeves Jan 2009

Teacher Investment In Learner Identity, Jenelle Reeves

Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Faculty Publications

From a sociocultural perspective, teacher identity is constructed in relation to others, including other teachers and students. Drawing on positioning theory and the concept of investment, this study analyzed the case of a secondary English teacher who negotiated his teacher identity in relation to English language learners (ELLs). Findings indicated that the teacher made an investment in ELLs’ identity by positioning them as like any other student. The desired return on the teacher’s investment was a strengthened self-positioning as a natural and highly competent teacher. The implications of teacher investment in learner identity for teacher practice, learner identity construction, and …

From Homer To The 21st Century: Charting The Emergence Of The Structure Of Interpersonal Meaning, John Adamopoulos Jan 2009

From Homer To The 21st Century: Charting The Emergence Of The Structure Of Interpersonal Meaning, John Adamopoulos

Papers from the International Association for Cross-Cultural Psychology Conferences

During the last quarter of the 20th century, cross-cultural research established that the meaning of interpersonal behavior can be described in terms of a universal structure that includes, among others, the notions of association (affiliation), superordination (dominance), and intimacy. While researchers generally agree on most of these universal dimensions, little is known about their origins –the whys and the wherefores of these structures. An approach designed to explain the emergence of the meaning of interpersonal behavior is the focus of this chapter. This approach is based on the assumption that social behavior involves the exchange of material and psychological resources, …

In Case Of Emergency: Misunderstanding Tradeoffs In The War On Terror, Stephen Holmes Jan 2009

In Case Of Emergency: Misunderstanding Tradeoffs In The War On Terror, Stephen Holmes

Faculty Articles

The article discusses the debate on counterterrorism law. The author states that adhering to the pre-existing rules such as the habeas corpus and the Geneva Conventions during emergency situations underestimate the consequences of dangers. It states that rules which constrain the executive are needed for flexibility that is required for effectiveness in confronting the terrorist threats. It further notes that the existing emergency rules can impede responses to danger and disaster when these rules are slavishly followed. The author stresses on the idea that decisions for counterterrorism increase security in one dimension only since the spectrum of threats remains complex …

This study explored Lao life histories, health, and social adjustment in the southern New England states of Rhode Island and Connecticut. In addition, it sought to examine whether there was a correlation between war experiences early in life and health in adulthood, a finding reported in previous research on the Hmong, another ethnic group from Laos. Overall, 99 Lao adults born in Laos or Thailand (mean age 43.5 +/- 10.8 years) completed orally administered questionnaires and were measured for blood pressure and various anthropometric markers. Lao in this sample appeared to have higher than average educational back grounds in Laos, …

Reading Joycean Comedy And Faulknerian Tragedy: Exploring The Significance Of Location, Literary Influence And The Possibilities Of Heroism With Leopold Bloom In Joyce’S Ulysses And Quentin Compson In Faulkner’S The Sound And The Fury And Absalom, Absalom!, Colin R. Cummings Jan 2009

Cummings

Honors Theses

The distinct similarity between Joyce’s and Faulkner’s philosophical concerns (the affirmation of life in spite of its myriad difficulties), and the striking disjuncture between their aesthetic approaches (comedy for Joyce and tragedy for Faulkner), is where my interest in this project began. I sought to explore the lives and works of both writers in order to get a sense of how two artists could attempt to convey a similar message through such different means. The first thing I explore is a number of similarities between Joyce’s and Faulkner’s personal worlds (particularly their intimate connections to location) and their sources of …

Non-Programmers Identifying Functionality In Unfamiliar Code: Strategies And Barriers, Paul Gross, Caitlin Kelleher Jan 2009

Non-Programmers Identifying Functionality In Unfamiliar Code: Strategies And Barriers, Paul Gross, Caitlin Kelleher

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

Source code on the web is a widely available and potentially rich learning resource for non-programmers. However, unfamiliar code can be daunting to end-users without programming experience. This paper describes the results of an exploratory study in which we asked non-programmers to find and modify the code responsible for specific functionality within unfamiliar programs. We present two interacting models of how non-programmers approach this problem: the Task Process Model and the Landmark-Mapping model. Using these models, we describe code search strategies non-programmers employed and the difficulties they encountered. Finally, we propose guidelines for future programming environments that support non-programmers in …

"Falling To A Devilish Exercise": Magic And Spectacle On The Renaissance Stage, Shayne Confer Jan 2009

"Falling To A Devilish Exercise": Magic And Spectacle On The Renaissance Stage, Shayne Confer

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The enormous amount of research on the subject of early modern magic indicates clearly that magical thought occupied a significant place in contemporary mental patterns. Its existence was widespread enough to cause popular prejudice against its most esoteric forms combined with tacit acceptance of "folk" magic, the kind employed by local men and women for the benefit of their neighbors. The early playwrights who dramatized the magus were thus fairly constricted in how the magus could appear without unduly scandalizing the popular audience. Robert Greene, Anthony Munday, and Christopher Marlowe all drew upon characters from popular chapbook romances and dramatized …

Dialogues Between Feminists And Jacques Lacan On Female Hysteria And Femininity, Katerina Catherine Daniel Jan 2009

Dialogues Between Feminists And Jacques Lacan On Female Hysteria And Femininity, Katerina Catherine Daniel

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This theoretical dissertation aims to initiate a dialogue between Lacan and Irigaray, Butler, and poststructuralist Anglophone feminists on the relationship between hysteria and femininity. The very existence of hysteria has been called into question by the majority of Anglophone feminists, who have criticized its diagnostic proliferation, claiming that it has negative implications for social change and has played a central part in women's oppression. The Anglophone feminist tradition views Lacanian psychoanalytic theories of sexuation and hysteria with a critical eye, arguing that Lacan's oeuvre is another version of patriarchal discourse, another reductionistic paradigm of female suffering, and another essentialist scheme …
