Loo Law: The Public Washroom As A Hyper-Regulated Place, Irus Braverman
Loo Law: The Public Washroom As A Hyper-Regulated Place, Irus Braverman
UC Law SF Journal on Gender and Justice
The article suggests that the public washroom is the most regulated of all common spaces in the United States. It offers several possible explanations for this hyper-juridical attention. First and foremost, the article argues that such hyper regulation of the public washroom has to do with the sanitary and moral significance of this space. Secondly, it argues that the intensity of washroom regulation is due to its ambiguous public/private properties. Finally, the articie suggests that the intense regulation of the public washroom is the result of physio-anatomical functions performed in it.
Gender Specific Rules In Sport Are Based On An Outdated Idea Of Femininity, Carlie Minichino
Gender Specific Rules In Sport Are Based On An Outdated Idea Of Femininity, Carlie Minichino
Honors Theses
This work is meant to point out the disservice done to female athletes when they play the same sports as their male counterparts but are made to play with different rules. The differences are based on an outdated idea of femininity, as female docility and no longer apply today (if it ever did). This attitude, along with rules of sport, needs to be changed. This paper analyzes this social ideology from three different angles. First, it examines how the female is viewed in society and how this gaze can be changed as presented in the academic writings. Then there is …

The Warp And Woof Of Statutory Interpretation: Comparing Supreme Court Approaches In Tax Law And Workplace Law, James J. Brudney, Corey Distlear
Faculty Scholarship
Debates about statutory interpretation-and especially about the role of the canons of construction and legislative history-are generally framed in one-size-fits-all terms. Yet federal judges including most Supreme Court Justices-have not approached statutory interpretation from a methodologically uniform perspective. This Article presents the first in-depth examination of interpretive approaches taken in two distinct subject areas over an extended period of time. Professors Brudney and Ditslear compare how the Supreme Court has relied on legislative history and the canons of construction when construing tax statutes and workplace statutes from 1969 to 2008. The authors conclude that the Justices tend to rely on …

Translating Anglo-Saxon Poetry: Foreignized Translations Of The Seafarer And The Wanderer, Andrew Timothy Eichel
Translating Anglo-Saxon Poetry: Foreignized Translations Of The Seafarer And The Wanderer, Andrew Timothy Eichel
Masters Theses
Few scholars argue that medieval literature retains the same prestige today it once held as the foundation of almost every school's English literature/language department. One reason for this fall could be the lack of proper integration of newer literary approaches into the field. Why, despite the recent swell in the use of more contemporary schools of theory-Marxism, feminism, and deconstructionism, for example-do many medieval scholars still endorse traditional strategies of historical and empirical analysis? Focusing on the translation methodology of foreignization, I present Ezra Pound's translation of the Anglo-Saxon poem "The Seafarer" and my translation of "The Wanderer." Both serve …
The Letters Of Elizabeth I: Rhetoric For Ruling, Anna M. Patton
The Letters Of Elizabeth I: Rhetoric For Ruling, Anna M. Patton
Masters Theses
This thesis is an investigation of the rhetorical skill of Elizabeth I of England, focusing primarily on her letters. Elizabeth's rhetorical prowess is well documented; scholars have spent ample time dissecting her political speeches as well as her historical significance in literary, political and historical studies. Although her speeches provide a firm foundation from which to examine Elizabeth and her relationships with her people, her letters are even more pertinent when examining those relationships Elizabeth sought to establish during her reign. Elizabeth's politics and relationships are enhanced and developed by her ability to manipulate those around her with her words. …
The Application Of Visual Phonics And Phonological Awareness Interventions To Address Language Impairment In Preschool Children, Jodi Dyke
Masters Theses
The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of two phonological awareness interventions on the development of auditory comprehension, expressive language, semantics, and syntax. Specifically, the study examined the effect of phonological awareness intervention integrated with See the Sound/Visual Phonics hand cues versus only phonological awareness intervention. Twenty-seven children identified as speech and/or language delayed were assigned to one of three groups that received (a) phonological awareness instruction, (b) phonological awareness instruction coupled with visual phonics hand cues, or (c) no intervention. Seven children were designated as a control group and twenty were placed in one of two …
Relationship Between Fluency And Comprehension For Middle School Students, Ingrid Mccallister
Relationship Between Fluency And Comprehension For Middle School Students, Ingrid Mccallister
Masters Theses
A study was conducted to examine the relationship between fluency and comprehension for middle school students and determine if interest, prior knowledge, reading achievement and/or prior exposure to the content topic impact rate of reading (fluency) and level of comprehension for these students. Seventh grade students (n=242) completed fluency and comprehension assessments given by the school as benchmark assessments. In addition, the students were given prior knowledge and interest surveys concerning a topic (i.e., astronomy) to which only half of the population had been exposed. The students were then given researcher created fluency and comprehension assessments using a narrative text …

Structured Revision: A New Model In Rethinking, Rewriting, And Reiterating Text, Tom Henry
The Utah English Journal
Many procedures offered by textbooks, including the process model itself, fall short of actually encouraging students to successfully revise and/or make significant changes to their texts. Yet a form of revision which is more carefully structured may help students to make more specific changes while improving the quality of their diction, syntax, paragraphing, and the overall quality of their writing.

Beyond Bidil: The Expanding Embrace Of Race In Biomedical Research And Product Development, Jonathan Kahn
Beyond Bidil: The Expanding Embrace Of Race In Biomedical Research And Product Development, Jonathan Kahn
Faculty Scholarship
In 2005 the FDA approved BiDil, the first drug ever to include a race-specific indication on its label - to treat heart failure in a “black” patient. In the aftermath of this controversial approval and subsequent marketing of the drug, many have wondered whether BiDil was an anomaly or a harbinger of things to come. This article moves beyond BiDil to explore how similar yet distinct models are developing for the continuing exploitation of race in biomedical practice and product development. It will explore the tensions embedded in the persistent use of racial categories even as specific genetic variations linked …
Before Belief: Embodiment And The “Trying Game”, Donna Strickland
Before Belief: Embodiment And The “Trying Game”, Donna Strickland
The Journal of the Assembly for Expanded Perspectives on Learning
I use my experience of teaching "Mindful Writing" to reflect on the pre-cognitive act of "trying out" new ideas. It seems that there's an important piece of the believing game that happens before the cognitive act of belief and that involves the body as much as the mind.

Aliens In The Garden, Jared A. Goldstein
Aliens In The Garden, Jared A. Goldstein
University of Colorado Law Review
This Article examines environmental rhetoric and argues that a nationalist conception of nature has long distorted environmental policies. Environmental discourse frequently seeks to explain the natural world by reference to the world of nations, a phenomenon that can be characterizeda s the "nationalizationo f nature." A contemporary example of the nationalization of nature is the rhetoric of "Invasive species," which depicts harmful foreign plants and animals in ways that bear an uncanny resemblance to the demonization of foreigners by opponents of immigration. A typical newspaper article about invasive species, bearing the headline "Eeeeek! The eels are coming!," warned about an …

"I Am Not Afraid To Listen": Prospective Teachers Learning From Students, Alison Cook-Sather
Education Program Faculty Research and Scholarship
This article describes a project that positions high school students as teacher educators within an undergraduate secondary certification program. A brief review of researchers' arguments for listening to students and a description of the project contextualize the perspectives of graduates of the program who teach or have taught in city schools. These teachers emphasize howthe project allows them to reaccess the student experience in school; get clear on what it means to really listen; learn how important it is to take students' experiences and perspectives seriously; recognize how much more engaged in their learning students are when teachers listen and …
