Response To Intervention, David Moore May 2009

Response To Intervention, David Moore

Education Masters

In this literature review I looked at the vast literature on Response to Intervention (RTI). I focused on literature about Response to Intervention in regards to the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) 2004, how Response to Intervention works as an academic model, and what a culturally responsive RTI program would look like. My research looked at a three tiered system of intervention that was in place in an elementary school for the 4th and 5th grade students for the 2007-2008 academic school year. I tracked student progress on reading levels using the Degree of Reading Assessment 2 throughout the …

Natural And Necessary Language: A Newcomer Resource Manual, Shelley Joy Henry May 2009

Natural And Necessary Language: A Newcomer Resource Manual, Shelley Joy Henry

All Graduate Projects

American public schools are experiencing a dramatic rise in immigrant students. These "newcomer students" have unique needs. Providing "newcomer students" with a specialized, short term program allows them the gift of time as they make major adjustments to many new aspects of life in the United States. Public schools are challenged to assess the needs and provide the most appropriate research based teaching practices for this special group of students. The research shows layers of diversity among "newcomer students" which requires careful implementation of instruction and curriculum to create a safe environment for learning the English language, core content, and …

A Resource Guide For Embedding Multicultural Capital Into The Secondary Science Classrooms Of Central Washington, Theresa Susan Bell

All Graduate Projects

The multiple aspects of multicultural education were researched and are here-in compared and discussed. Through research it was found that although much research exists on multicultural education, little or no multicultural resources are available for secondary science specific to Central Washington. Implications for multicultural education, science education and the integration of the two are discussed. A collection of lessons, websites and teacher tools were merged into a resource guide that can be used for local lesson planning. Practical ideas are offered to the inexperienced multicultural science educator.

The Effects Of Different Types Of Prompts On Achievement And Attitude In Mathematics, Barbara R. Greer Edd

Dissertations

This study examined the effects of three different types of writing prompts, procedural, summary, and self-monitoring, on achievement and self-concept of ability in mathematics. Participants included 81 eighth grade students taking a course designed to prepare students for algebra in the ninth grade in a large urban school district in Southern California. Data were gathered using a quasi-experimental design, teacher-researcher created pre-and post-tests, the Minnesota Mathematics Attitude Inventory, teacher field notes, student responses to prompts, and individual and group interviews. Controlling for demographic and other variables identified in the study, simultaneous regression analysis revealed that only summary writing had a …

Introduction: Can We Bridge The Rigour-Relevance Gap?, Robin Fincham, Timothy Adrian Robert Clark May 2009

Introduction: Can We Bridge The Rigour-Relevance Gap?, Robin Fincham, Timothy Adrian Robert Clark

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

The following series of articles emanate from a session held at the first Journal of Management Studies Conference on the theme of ‘Beyond knowledge management: advancing the organizational knowledge research agenda’. The conference was concerned to advance academic understanding of this broad topic and in addition to reflect on the role of management scholars as creators, commodifiers and disseminators of management and organizational knowledge. The latter theme arose from debates in relation to the apparent marginality of business school academics in the production of management knowledge (Barley et al., 1988; Gibson and Tesone, 2001; Spell, 2001) and their consequent (in)ability …

Meditations In The Mirror: A Return To The Undetermined Animal, Annie Lynn Smalley May 2009

Meditations In The Mirror: A Return To The Undetermined Animal, Annie Lynn Smalley

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

My aim is to try and discover what it would mean to see from an animal perspective, which is the animal perspective that I once had before my training and the animal perspective buried deep within me waiting to return. Since this animal perspective is weakened by the process of domestication (it is starved), I am very much interested in discovering what it is, what it would be to perceive as an animal, what possibilities does this potentiality have to offer and whether this is the animal that always should have evolved. The animal within can only respond to these …

Missouri Elementary Teacher Certification Programs And The Education Provided On How Boys And Girls Learn Differently, Elizabeth Anne Cooper

Dissertations

Teacher education programs, professional development, and higher education should provide educators with the information needed to address the ways that boys and girls learn differently. This mixed-methods study discovered the amount of education provided to teachers during their Teacher Education Programs in regards to how girls and boys learn. This study focused on a purposeful sample of five school districts within a chosen region in Missouri. Data were collected from elementary schools within these districts in the fall of 2008. The subjects included a purposeful sample of elementary teachers throughout these districts. In addition, twelve elementary teachers within this region …

A Study Of Correlation Between Student Achievement And Reading Instructional Methods, Kelly G. Lowe May 2009

A Study Of Correlation Between Student Achievement And Reading Instructional Methods, Kelly G. Lowe

Dissertations

The No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act of 2001 forced school districts to become more accountable by requiring all students to read on grade level by the year 2014. In southwest Missouri, school districts are currently using different reading models, instructional time, and staff development in an attempt to reach the goal of NCLB. This study examined different instructional strategies implemented and compared student achievement on the third grade 2007-2008 Missouri Assessment Program communication arts test. Data were collected from 70 participating public, elementary school buildings to determine whether a correlation existed between reading models and instructional strategies implemented and …

The Sky Is Wide Enough: A Historico-Critical Appraisal Of Theological Activity And Method In Africa, Agbonkhianmeghe E. Orobator

Theology Faculty Research and Publications

This essay presents and critiques the methods and claims of the principal theological schools and camps of African theology. While situating them in their historical context, it examines their respective claims as the best representative or expression of theological activity in Africa. The historico-critical appraisal of these African theological schools generates some useful lessons on the nature and method of theological reflection in Africa, particularly the necessity of taking experience and context seriously.

Speech Perception And The Mcgurk Effect : A Cross Cultural Study Using Event-Related Potentials., Jia Wu May 2009

Speech Perception And The Mcgurk Effect : A Cross Cultural Study Using Event-Related Potentials., Jia Wu

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Previous research has indicated the important role of visual information in the speech perception process. These studies have elucidated the areas of the brain involved in the processing of audiovisual stimuli. The McGurk effect, an audiovisual illusion, has been demonstrated to be a useful tool in the study of audiovisual integration. Brain imaging research suggests that the McGurk effect is modulated by brain structures in the Superior Temporal Gyrus, Supplemental Temporal Cortex and Broadman area 41. Electrophysiological studies suggest that the McGurk effect generates a different brainwave than the standard audiovisual congruent condition in frontal, central and parietal regions among …

The Quilt As Concept., Denise Mucci Furnish May 2009

The Quilt As Concept., Denise Mucci Furnish

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis presents an overview of my current work in context with my entire body of painted quilts created over a span of twenty-eight years. From its foundation in Feminism, my work reflects the quilt as an art form and a metaphor for my life and the lives of women of my generation. I have used Semiotics as a tool for organizing and explaining the work. The study of signs and their referents make a chain of signification that helps explain the multilayered and conceptual nature of my work. The paper is divided into an introduction and seven chapters that …

Viewing The World Through Oprah's Eyes: A Framing Analysis Of The Spiritual Views Of Oprah Winfrey, Marianne Jeanette Crosby May 2009

Viewing The World Through Oprah's Eyes: A Framing Analysis Of The Spiritual Views Of Oprah Winfrey, Marianne Jeanette Crosby

Masters Theses

Oprah Winfrey is an American icon. She has a hand in almost every form of media: movies, television, books, Internet, and radio. In her rise to success, another place that she has infiltrated is the church. Because of her wide range of influence, her thoughts and teaching on spirituality have made their way into both the home and church. Over ten years ago, talk shows had a reputation for portraying mainly negative topics. To combat this stereotype, she made a push to encourage more positive topics of discussion on her show. Yet after receiving criticism for "preaching," she withdrew from …

The Nomination And Motivations Of Irish Non-Executive Directors Of Listed Companies, Anna Egan, Rebecca Maughan, Joseph Coughlan May 2009

The Nomination And Motivations Of Irish Non-Executive Directors Of Listed Companies, Anna Egan, Rebecca Maughan, Joseph Coughlan

Conference papers

This paper reports the preliminary findings of an empirical investigation into the process of appointing non-executive directors and their motivations behind the adoption of the position. While research into the board of directors has been extensive, little deliberation has been given to the motives of non-executives who choose to sit on boards (Roberts, 2002). Given that the board of directors has been charged with much more responsibility in recent years and is being held to a higher level of accountability than would historically be expected (Donnelly and Kelly, 2005), the choice of non-executives to continue to take up roles on …

Personality Traits Of Bus Drivers Conducive To Maintaining Good Student Behavior, S. Brent Depee' May 2009

Personality Traits Of Bus Drivers Conducive To Maintaining Good Student Behavior, S. Brent Depee'

Dissertations

School administrators are faced with the responsibility of disciplining students for misconduct on the school bus. Some bus drivers frequently send discipline referrals to the administration, whereas others seldom do. This study attempts to identify certain personality traits of bus drivers that contribute to good student behaviors. Bus drivers from rural Missouri school districts who drove regular school routes were given the Global 5 Personality Trait Test. Building principals from these rural school districts gathered bus discipline referrals for the first semester of the 2008-2009 school year. The research design is quantitative causal-comparative in nature, while the data was collected …

The Effects Of Accountability On Leniency Reduction In Self Ratings, Brettney Smith May 2009

The Effects Of Accountability On Leniency Reduction In Self Ratings, Brettney Smith

All Theses

The purpose of the present study was to assess the effects of accountability on leniency reduction in self-ratings. It was hypothesized that participants in both the upward and illegitimate accountability condition would have lower levels of leniency in their self-ratings than participants in the no accountability condition. Accountability was operationalized as participants being told that they would have to justify their self-ratings of driving performance to either a professor who specializes in driving research (upward accountability) or to an education graduate student who maintains the driving simulator (illegitimate accountability) via an audiotape. The results showed that accountability had a significant …

Deus Ex Machinima: A Rhetorical Analysis Of User-Generated Machinima, Sean Callot May 2009

Deus Ex Machinima: A Rhetorical Analysis Of User-Generated Machinima, Sean Callot

All Theses

Beginning with corporate demonstrations and continuously evolving into today, machinima has become a major expressive art form for the gamer generation. Machinima is the user-centered production of video presentations using pre-rendered animated content, as generated from video games. The term 'machinima' is a combination of 'machine' (from which the video content is derived) and 'cinema' (the ultimate end product). According to Paul Marino and other members of the machinima community, Hugh Hancock, the creator of Machinima.com, first coined the term in 2000. Video productions of this kind have been used in various capacities for the past several years, including instruction …

Intersexed, Intertext: A Critique Of Limited Gender Identity In Herculine Barbin And Middlesex, Allison Andrew May 2009

Intersexed, Intertext: A Critique Of Limited Gender Identity In Herculine Barbin And Middlesex, Allison Andrew

All Theses

Relying on the work of poststructuralists Michel Foucault, Judith Butler, and Judith Halberstam for their findings on gender and sexuality, as well as the sociological study of intersexed individuals by Sharon Preves, this thesis will show the identity construction of the intersexed both before and after intervention by closely charting their plight as it is presented in Michel Foucault's Herculine Barbin (1980) and Jeffrey Eugenides's Middlesex (2003). These texts vary greatly in historical significance, genre, and audience, but nevertheless suggest the same argument regarding the construction of identity. Ultimately, it is the self whose definition is of the greatest importance. …
