Noninvasive Estimation Of Pulmonary Artery Pressure Using Heart Sound Analysis, Aaron W. Dennis Dec 2009

Noninvasive Estimation Of Pulmonary Artery Pressure Using Heart Sound Analysis, Aaron W. Dennis

Theses and Dissertations

Right-heart catheterization is the most accurate method for estimating pulmonary artery pressure (PAP). Because it is an invasive procedure it is expensive, exposes patients to the risk of infection, and is not suited for long-term monitoring situations. Medical researchers have shown that PAP influences the characteristics of heart sounds. This suggests that heart sound analysis is a potential noninvasive solution to the PAP estimation problem. This thesis describes the development of a prototype system, called PAPEr, which estimates PAP noninvasively using heart sound analysis. PAPEr uses patient data with machine learning algorithms to build models of how PAP affects heart …

Slow Isoinertial Cervical Strength Training Does Not Alter Dynamic Stabilization Of The Head And Neck During A Standard Football Tackle, Peter J. Lisman Dec 2009

Slow Isoinertial Cervical Strength Training Does Not Alter Dynamic Stabilization Of The Head And Neck During A Standard Football Tackle, Peter J. Lisman

Open Access Dissertations

The sternocleidomastoid (SCM) and upper trapezius (UT) muscles are the primary dynamic stabilizers of the head and neck and likely attenuate head acceleration with direct and indirect impacts. Increasing the strength of the SCM and UT through cervical resistance training has been recommended to prevent concussions in football players. The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of an eight-week isoinertial cervical resistance training program on SCM and UT muscle activity (EMG) and kinematic responses of the head and neck during a standard football tackle in college-aged males. Sixteen college-aged males (21.6 ± 2.8 y, 94.6 ± 13.3 …

Determination Of Glutathione Peroxidase (Gsh-Pex) Activity In Sera & Rbcs Of Iraqi Women With Breast Tumors, Peri H. Saifullah, Fatin F. Al-Kazzaz, Zayzafoon N. N. Al-Azawi Dec 2009

Determination Of Glutathione Peroxidase (Gsh-Pex) Activity In Sera & Rbcs Of Iraqi Women With Breast Tumors, Peri H. Saifullah, Fatin F. Al-Kazzaz, Zayzafoon N. N. Al-Azawi

Baghdad Science Journal

Breast tumor patients generally have more oxidative stress than normal females. This was clear from non significant decrease in RBCs and serum of GSH-Pex activity in all groups of patients. The study had found that free radicals in malignant breast tumors were higher than benign tumors; therefore the GSH- Pex might be used as markers for prognosis of the disease.

Engaging Youth Through Volunteer Service Travel: In Service Of The Common Good, Andrew Bailey, Keith Russell Dec 2009

Engaging Youth Through Volunteer Service Travel: In Service Of The Common Good, Andrew Bailey, Keith Russell

Journal of Youth Development

Volunteer Tourism is becoming a popular topic in the travel literature. These experiences combine the adventure of travel with opportunities to serve the communities visited. This burgeoning field of tourism may provide an attractive outlet for generating positive developmental assets and for encouraging future civic engagement. This paper highlights a study which explored the relationship of wisdom and social capital and also discussed the influence of a voluntourism experience on wisdom and social capital domains. The sample consisted of 68 high school youth from the various high schools in Illinois. Results indicate that wisdom and social capital are positively and …

Seeing It, Knowing It, Elizabeth M. Glazer

NULR Online

In When Obscenity Discriminates, I argued that the First Amendment’s obscenity doctrine has generated discriminatory collateral effects against gays and lesbians, and that those collateral effects generate a need to refine the obscenity doctrine in light of the Supreme Court’s decision in Lawrence v. Texas. In his response, If Obscenity Were to Discriminate, Professor Barry McDonald agrees with my essay’s “core insight—that the Miller obscenity test should be applied in a manner that is neutral as to the sexual orientation of the pertinent actors,” and notes that this insight “appears to have substantial support in basic principles …

Effect Of The Interactive Computerized Information For Surrogates Icu Program In Increasing The Understanding Of Informed Consent And The Knowledge Of Genetic And Genomics Research, Ann Kathleen Shelton

Dissertations

Background: A significant and growing number of clinical research studies conducted in Intensive Care Units (ICUs) today have some genetic and genomics component. Surrogates approached to authorize participation in clinical research for a loved-one in the ICU may not be prepared to make informed decisions. A model of stewardship of genetic and genomics research was used as a framework for this study. Purpose: The purpose of this investigation was to examine the effect of an educational program, the Interactive Computerized Information for Surrogates (ICIS) ICU Education Program in assisting surrogates to (1) increase their understanding of the process of informed …

Skateboard Park Participation: A Means-End Analysis, Marni Goldenberg, Wynn Shooter Dec 2009

Skateboard Park Participation: A Means-End Analysis, Marni Goldenberg, Wynn Shooter

Journal of Youth Development

Skateboarding has become a highly visible and popular activity. However, many negative stereotypes remain associated with the activity and its participants (Jones & Graves, 2000). In contrast to the negative stereotypes, skateboarding seems to provide many individuals, and youth in particular, with an important outlet for physical activity, leisure, and personal development. The purpose of this study was to investigate why skateboarders chose to visit skateboard parks, to identify outcomes of participating in skateboarding at skateboard parks, and to identify the underlying values that guide skateboarders’ choice of this specific setting. The conceptual framework for the reported study was provided …

Fabrication Methods For Creating Flexible Polymer Substrate Sensor Tags, Jack L. Skinner, Harvey Ho Dec 2009

Fabrication Methods For Creating Flexible Polymer Substrate Sensor Tags, Jack L. Skinner, Harvey Ho

Mechanical Engineering

The authors describe the design, fabrication, and testing of a passive wireless sensor platform utilizing low-cost commercial surface acoustic wave filters and sensors. Polyimide and polyethylene terephthalate sheets are used as substrates to create a flexible sensor tag that can be applied to curved surfaces. A microfabricated antenna is integrated on the substrate in order to create a compact form factor. The sensor tags are fabricated using 315 MHz surface acoustic wave filters and photodiodes and tested with the aid of a fiber-coupled tungsten lamp. Microwave energy transmitted from a network analyzer is used to interrogate the sensor tag. Due …

The Depiction Of Female Models In Sport Television Commercials In The United States By Degree Of Slenderness: An Appraisal, Robin T. Peterson, Bing Xu, Yam Limbu Dec 2009

The Depiction Of Female Models In Sport Television Commercials In The United States By Degree Of Slenderness: An Appraisal, Robin T. Peterson, Bing Xu, Yam Limbu

Department of Marketing Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

This manuscript narrates the results of an examination of the portrayal of the degree of slenderness of female models in sport marketing television commercials in the United States. A visual content analysis was employed to gather and to interpret the data. In turn, the analysis revealed that the commercials utilized substantial numbers of models who were inordinately slender, depicted these models more favorably than they did heavier models, and presented them in a fashion that pointed to superior social status and hierarchy positions.
