Why Horses? Why Not Horses? : Equine-Facilitated Therapy As It Applies To Mental Health, Katie Ann Worms
Theses, Dissertations, and Projects
This study explored the general benefits of equine-facilitated therapy and for whom this treatment is appropriate. Utilizing interviews of ten equine therapists and therapeutic riding instructors, who have an advanced degree in the areas of social work, psychology, education or therapeutic recreation, as well as at least one year of professional equine experience, this study explored the participants' perception of the use of equine-facilitated therapies as it applies to mental health treatment. Secondly, through this perspective, the study looked to identify a "preferred client profile" that participants felt would be best suited to engage in equine-facilitated therapy (EFT). The findings …

The Anchor, Volume 123.01: September 2, 2009, Hope College
The Anchor: 2009
The Anchor began in 1887 and was first issued weekly in 1914. Covering national and campus news alike, Hope College’s student-run newspaper has grown over the years to encompass over two-dozen editors, reporters, and staff. For much of The Anchor's history, the latest issue was distributed across campus each Wednesday throughout the academic school year (with few exceptions). In recent years The Anchor moved to monthly print issues and a more frequently updated website. The Anchor is now published in print twice per academic semester. Occasionally, the volume and/or issue numbering is irregular.

Angioplasty Vs. Cryoplasty For The Treatment Of Symptomatic Peripheral Vascular Disease: A Retrospective Review Looking At Comparative Outcomes, Jordan Knepper, John Welker
Angioplasty Vs. Cryoplasty For The Treatment Of Symptomatic Peripheral Vascular Disease: A Retrospective Review Looking At Comparative Outcomes, Jordan Knepper, John Welker
Undergraduate Medical Student Research
In 2007 it was reported that eight million Americans are affected by Peripheral Vascular Disease (PVD) and of these affected, around ten percent report being symptomatic (Mayo Clinic). With such a large percentage of Americans affected by this problem, many providers who care for these patients opt to treat with the least invasive option and then progress to more invasive means if necessary. To date, Percutaneous Transluminal Angioplasty (PTA) has been the preferred minimally invasive endovascular treatment option for symptomatic PVD. Though this option is preferred and used extensively, there are concerning short and long term potential consequence such as …
The Effect Of Experiential Education On Students' Attitudes About Complementary & Alternative Medicine Practices, Eva Kaul, Mariebeth Velasquez
The Effect Of Experiential Education On Students' Attitudes About Complementary & Alternative Medicine Practices, Eva Kaul, Mariebeth Velasquez
Undergraduate Medical Student Research
OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the effectiveness of an experiential Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) education session in changing medical students beliefs, attitudes, and comfort level with CAM. DESIGN: Students attended a 3 hour class on Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction with a trained provider, and completed a Likert scale survey of their agreement with various statements about CAM both pre and post-session. ASSESSMENT: Changes in agreement with 7 of the 10 items reached statistical significance, including increase in students' subjective level of knowledge about CAM, decrease in the belief that CAM is too controversial to discuss with patients, increase in perceived ability …
An Interactive Telehealth Program To Improve Attitudes Toward Treating Diabetes, Richard Wintermute, Kathleen Colleran
An Interactive Telehealth Program To Improve Attitudes Toward Treating Diabetes, Richard Wintermute, Kathleen Colleran
Undergraduate Medical Student Research
Background Currently 60% of the United States population is overweight or obese. Recent data has shown that 7% of the US population has Diabetes Mellitus Type 2 and New Mexico is above the average at 9%. Many studies have shown that good glycemic control with lifestyle changes or Metformin therapy can prevent or delay microvascular and some macrovascular complications of Diabetes. These findings have not been translated into routine care especially in New Mexico in large part due to NMs largely, rural, poor and medically underserved population. The Extension for Community Healthcare Outcomes (ECHO) is a project developed at the …

The Effects Of Sexually Transmitted Illness (Sti) Stigmatization On Intimate Relationships : Non-Infected Partners' Perceptions, Reactions, Feelings And Attitudes Toward Female Partners' Disclosure Of Herpes Simplex Virus (Hsv) Positive Status, Sarah Heath Williams
Theses, Dissertations, and Projects
The purpose of this study was to explore in greater depth the effects of Sexually Transmitted Illness (STI) stigma on intimate relationships by examining the reactions of non-infected intimate partners to their female partner's disclosure of her Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV) positive status. The research question was: what are non-infected partners perceptions, reactions, feelings and attitudes to their female partner's disclosure of HSV positive status? This exploratory mixed-methods study was informed by the extant literature on STI stigma and intimate relationships. The lens of stigma theory is used to frame the discussion of the findings. Forty-three participants responded to the …
Rumen Fermentation Pattern Of Dairy Heifers Fed Restricted Amounts Of Low, Medium, And High Concentrate Diets Without And With Yeast Culture, G. J. Lascano, A. J. Heinrichs
Rumen Fermentation Pattern Of Dairy Heifers Fed Restricted Amounts Of Low, Medium, And High Concentrate Diets Without And With Yeast Culture, G. J. Lascano, A. J. Heinrichs
Dairy Science
Restricted feeding and highconcentratediets are potential strategies for growing dairyheifers. Ruminal manipulation with additives such as Saccharomyces cerevisiaeyeastculture (YC) has been shown to alter digestibility when added to this type of diet. An experiment was conducted to investigate the ruminal fermentation and in situ digestibility of diets with 3 different levels of forage to concentrate (F:C) fed at restricted intake without and with YC addition. Three cannulated post-pubertal Holstein heifers (age 18.0 ± 1.2 months; body weight 449.6 ± 19.7 kg) were feddiets consisting of corn silage as the sole forage source in a 3 period (35-day) Latin square …

Shoulder Rehabilitation For The Injured Overhead-Throwing Athlete, Joshua M. Raskoff
Shoulder Rehabilitation For The Injured Overhead-Throwing Athlete, Joshua M. Raskoff
Recreation, Parks, and Tourism Administration
Baseball incorporates the violent motion of throwing as a main act of physical exertion. The shoulder joint is vulnerable to injury during this movement. The overall purpose of this study was to produce a rehabilitation program for injured overhead-throwing athletes and have it evaluated by healthcare professionals. A paper and pen style questionnaire was sent through the mail to a network of professionals in California. Eighteen of the 20 questionnaires were returned. The quantitative feedback of the Likert scale questions indicated that the program was effective and usable while the qualitative feedback indicated the opposite. The additional comments allowed experts …
