Geographical Patterning Of Sixteen Goat Breeds From Italy, Albania And Greece Assessed By Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms, Lorraine Pariset, Antonella Cuteri, Christina Ligda, Alessio Valentini, Econogene Consortium Sep 2009

Geographical Patterning Of Sixteen Goat Breeds From Italy, Albania And Greece Assessed By Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms, Lorraine Pariset, Antonella Cuteri, Christina Ligda, Alessio Valentini, Econogene Consortium

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Background: SNP data of goats of three Mediterranean countries were used for population studies and reconstruction of geographical patterning. 496 individuals belonging to Italian, Albanian and Greek breeds were genotyped to assess the basic population parameters.

Results: A total of 26 SNPs were used, for a total of 12,896 genotypes assayed. Statistical analysis revealed that breeds are not so similar in terms of genetic variability, as reported in studies performed using different markers. The Mantel test showed a strongly significant correlation between genetic and geographic distance. Also, PCA analysis revealed that breeds are grouped according to geographical origin, …

Adapting To Dynamic Stimulus-Response Values: Differential Contributions Of Inferior Frontal, Dorsomedial, And Dorsolateral Regions Of Prefrontal Cortex To Decision Making., Derek G V Mitchell, Qian Luo, Shelley B Avny, Tomasz Kasprzycki, Karanvir Gupta, Gang Chen, Elizabeth C Finger, R James R Blair Sep 2009

Adapting To Dynamic Stimulus-Response Values: Differential Contributions Of Inferior Frontal, Dorsomedial, And Dorsolateral Regions Of Prefrontal Cortex To Decision Making., Derek G V Mitchell, Qian Luo, Shelley B Avny, Tomasz Kasprzycki, Karanvir Gupta, Gang Chen, Elizabeth C Finger, R James R Blair

Brain and Mind Institute Researchers' Publications

Dorsomedial prefrontal cortex (dmPFC), dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (dlPFC), and inferior frontal gyrus (IFG) have all been implicated in resolving decision conflict whether this conflict is generated by having to select between responses of similar value or by making selections following a reversal in reinforcement contingencies. However, work distinguishing their individual functional contributions remains preliminary. We used functional magnetic resonance imaging to delineate the functional role of these systems with regard to both forms of decision conflict. Within dmPFC and dlPFC, blood oxygen level-dependent responses increased in response to decision conflict regardless of whether the conflict occurred in the context of …

Bolivia: Novel Rocket Stoves, Mike Naleid, Erik Reiersen

ETHOS Technical Reports

Upon arrival in Cochabamba on May 17th 2009, Mike Naleid and Erik Reiersen primarily took on the task of two large projects during their stay, both dealing with the design of new wood burning ecological stoves. Before leaving for CEDESOL in May, they were in contact with David Whitfield and briefly discussed his ideas for a new rocket stove that would be used for making chicha, a native drink of the Andes Mountain regions. Considering the pot size for a typical batch of chicha is around 500L, the design of the stove consisted of the same principles for a small …

Comparative Federalism And The Role Of Judiciary, Daniel Halberstam Sep 2009

Comparative Federalism And The Role Of Judiciary, Daniel Halberstam

Book Chapters

The distinctive feature of federalism is to locate the central and constituent governments' respective claims of organizational autonomy and jurisdictional authority within a set of privileged legal norms that are beyond the arena of daily politics. For the most part, the debate about the role of the judiciary as federal umpire has taken place within two separate disciplinary compartments: comparative politics and law. Building on recent eorts to bring these two disciplines closer, this article provides a fresh look at three common criticisms of granting the central judiciary power to protect federalism. It argues that political safeguards of federalism are …
