The Incentives To Participate In, And The Stability Of, International Climate Coalitions: A Game-Theoretic Analysis Using The Witch Model, Valentina Bosetti, Carlo Carraro, Enrica De Cian, Romain Duval, Emanuele Massetti, Massimo Tavoni Sep 2009

The Incentives To Participate In, And The Stability Of, International Climate Coalitions: A Game-Theoretic Analysis Using The Witch Model, Valentina Bosetti, Carlo Carraro, Enrica De Cian, Romain Duval, Emanuele Massetti, Massimo Tavoni

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

This paper uses WITCH, an integrated assessment model with a game-theoretic structure, to explore the prospects for, and the stability of broad coalitions to achieve ambitious climate change mitigation action. Only coalitions including all large emitting regions are found to be technically able to meet a concentration stabilisation target below 550 ppm CO2eq by 2100. Once the free-riding incentives of non-participants are taken into account, only a “grand coalition” including virtually all regions can be successful. This grand coalition is profitable as a whole, implying that all countries can gain from participation provided appropriate transfers are made across them. However, …

Climate Change Assessment And Agriculture In General Equilibrium Models: Alternative Modeling Strategies, Ruslana Palatnik, Roberto Roson Sep 2009

Climate Change Assessment And Agriculture In General Equilibrium Models: Alternative Modeling Strategies, Ruslana Palatnik, Roberto Roson

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

Agricultural sectors play a key role in the economics of climate change. Land as an input to agricultural production is one of the most important links between economy and the biosphere, representing a direct projection of human action on the natural environment. Agricultural management practices and cropping patterns have a vast effect on biogeochemical cycles, freshwater availability and soil quality. Agriculture also plays an important role in emitting and storing greenhouse gases. Thus, to consistently investigate climate policy and future pathways for the economic and natural environment, a realistic representation of agricultural land-use is essential. Computable General Equilibrium (CGE) models …

The Economic Valuation Of Marine Ecosystems, Paulo A.L.D. Nunes, Helen Ding, Anil Markandya Sep 2009

The Economic Valuation Of Marine Ecosystems, Paulo A.L.D. Nunes, Helen Ding, Anil Markandya

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

In a democratic system, policy makers have to take the preferences of the citizens into account. Since we live in a world with scarce resources, one is asked to make choices regarding the use and management of these resources. In this context, if policy makers decide to invest in the protection of marine ecosystems, less financial resources will be available for other policy areas, for example national health. Moreover, the investment in the protection of marine ecosystems brings along with it the provision of a wide range of benefits to humans though most are not priced in the existing markets …

Informal Finance: A Theory Of Moneylenders, Andreas Madestam Sep 2009

Informal Finance: A Theory Of Moneylenders, Andreas Madestam

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

I study the coexistence of formal and informal finance in underdeveloped credit markets. While weak institutions constrain formal banks, shallow pockets hamper informal lenders. In such economies, informal finance has two effects. By increasing the investment return it decreases borrowers’ relative payoff following default, inducing banks to lend more liberally (disciplinary effect). By channeling bank capital it reduces banks’ agency costs from lending directly to borrowers, limiting banks’ extension of borrower credit (rent-extraction effect). Among other things, the model shows that informal interest rates are higher, borrower welfare lower, and informal finance more prevalent when the rent-extraction effect prevails, consistent …

Article 82 Ec – The Problems And The Solution, John Temple Lang Sep 2009

Article 82 Ec – The Problems And The Solution, John Temple Lang

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

The Commission's Guidance paper on exclusionary abuse under Article 82 EC is open to three fundamental criticisms. First, it leads to less legal certainty, because the rules suggested are vague and imprecise, because dominant companies will not have the information needed to apply them, and because the Commission is trying to change the law, which it has no power to do. Second, it would lead to some anticompetitive effects, because in practice it discourages price competition, by discouraging individualised price negotiations and retroactive rebates, and by suggesting that the Commission will protect not-yet-as-efficient competitors from price competition. Third, it leads …

The Anchor, Volume 123.03: September 16, 2009, Hope College

The Anchor: 2009

The Anchor began in 1887 and was first issued weekly in 1914. Covering national and campus news alike, Hope College’s student-run newspaper has grown over the years to encompass over two-dozen editors, reporters, and staff. For much of The Anchor's history, the latest issue was distributed across campus each Wednesday throughout the academic school year (with few exceptions). In recent years The Anchor moved to monthly print issues and a more frequently updated website. The Anchor is now published in print twice per academic semester. Occasionally, the volume and/or issue numbering is irregular.

Educating The Power: Hiv/Aids And Parliamentarians Of Pakistan., Mohammad A Rai, Alefiyah Rajabali, Muhammad N Khan, Mohammad A Khan, Syed H Ali

Department of Biological & Biomedical Sciences

Increasing rates of HIV have been recorded amongst the Injection Drug User community from all parts of Pakistan. This has mobilized the health authorities into definitive action before there is a general spread of the epidemic into the Pakistani populace. Lacking any formal research as pertains to HIV policy development in Pakistan, international collaborating agencies, including the United Nations, are aiding in the formulation of a national policy to tackle HIV/AIDS. This article discusses the progress and importance of interventions being conducted amongst the Parliamentarians of Pakistan, relatively unchartered waters. The series of Seminars help to appraise the Parliamentarians of …

A Fluorescent Fibre Solar Concentrator (Ffsc) Design And Trial Run / Wang Chen, Chen Wang Sep 2009

A Fluorescent Fibre Solar Concentrator (Ffsc) Design And Trial Run / Wang Chen, Chen Wang

Student Works (2000-2009)

This thesis presents the author's research work on a concept development in the field of solar energy application for building illumination during his doctoral journey in Malaysia. As a considerable solution to the energy issues, solar energy is made widely available for daylighting and direct production of electricity. Various devices have been developed to collect, concentrate, transport, store and con ert solar irradiation, such as the light pipe, optical fibers, optical solar concentrators, and luminescent solar concentrators (LSC). Many limitations such a the strict dependence on beam irradiation and difficulties for wiring remain in these daylighting devices. This thesis introduces …

The Influences Of Cell Type And Zno Nanoparticle Size On Immune Cell Cytotoxicity And Cytokine Induction, Cory Hanley, Aaron Thurber, Charles Hanna, Alex Punnoose, Jianhui Zhang, Denise G. Wingett

Physics Faculty Publications and Presentations

Nanotechnology represents a new and enabling platform that promises to provide a range of innovative technologies for biological applications. ZnO nanoparticles of controlled size were synthesized, and their cytotoxicity towards different human immune cells evaluated. A differential cytotoxic response between human immune cell subsets was observed, with lymphocytes being the most resistant and monocytes being the most susceptible to ZnO nanoparticle-induced toxicity. Significant differences were also observed between previously activated memory lymphocytes and naive lymphocytes, indicating a relationship between cell-cycle potential and nanoparticle susceptibility. Mechanisms of toxicity involve the generation of reactive oxygen species, with monocytes displaying the highest levels, …
