Teaching Torture, Beth Van Schaack, Ron Slye Sep 2009

Teaching Torture, Beth Van Schaack, Ron Slye

Faculty Publications

This chapter, to appear in the 2nd edition of Beth Van Schaack & Ron Slye's International Criminal Law & Its Enforcement (Foundation Press 2010), covers the crime of torture under international criminal law. It begins with a doctrinal discussion of the elements of torture as elucidated in the international criminal law jurisprudence with a focus on cases concerning gender-based violence and sex crimes. It then enables a comparison of this established doctrine with the "torture memos" produced during the administration of President Bush. Using a rich set of Notes, Questions and Problems, the chapter offers a compelling tool for teaching …

Developing Eligibility Criteria For Daylighting Streams As Applied To Dallas' Mill Creek, Deepa Harkishore Koshaley Sep 2009

Developing Eligibility Criteria For Daylighting Streams As Applied To Dallas' Mill Creek, Deepa Harkishore Koshaley

Landscape Architecture Masters & Design Theses - Archive

Daylighting is a deliberate act of exposing the full or partial flow of previously buried rivers, creeks and streams into restored surface waterways. Human development has encroached upon natural streams and confined them in concrete channels and pipes, covered them partially or fully, and altered their natural courses. Eventually this has caused reductions in flow capacity, increase in flow velocity, and water pollution, leading to floods, erosion, and loss of natural resources. Stream daylighting is in a developmental phase, meaning that most of the daylighting projects have been undertaken without proper hydrological, geomorphological, and ecological assessment or knowledge of the …

Ecological Design In Resort Hotel Properties: Management Perceptions Of Ecologically Performative Landscape Practices, Kristen Leigh Mitrakis Sep 2009

Ecological Design In Resort Hotel Properties: Management Perceptions Of Ecologically Performative Landscape Practices, Kristen Leigh Mitrakis

Landscape Architecture Masters & Design Theses - Archive

It has been argued that in order to bring about society's acceptance of sustainable landscape practices, landscape architects must make them transparent; that is, visible, and ultimately understandable, to the observer. Only when the members of society become familiar with these techniques do they move into the realm of aesthetic acceptability (Thayer 1994; Bohdanowicz 2005). But given that ecologically performative landscapes are often perceived as "messy" (Nassauer 2002, 196), a compatibility issue arises when considering implementation of such visible technologies within landscapes that require a high level of aesthetic refinement. This research examines perceptions of ecologically performative landscape practices held by …

Innovative Storm Water Best Management Practices : Their Influence On Landscape Architecture In North Texas, Jason Christopher Voight Sep 2009

Innovative Storm Water Best Management Practices : Their Influence On Landscape Architecture In North Texas, Jason Christopher Voight

Landscape Architecture Masters & Design Theses - Archive

The land development process is essentially a three step progression consisting of input from developers who envision and fund a project, designers who translate the developer's vision into a buildable project, and the regulators who ensure that the project upholds, to the extent allowable by law, the health, safety, and welfare of mankind including the environment. As an outgrowth of this development model, the modern American city has evolved overtime into a sprawling metropolis, which has had a direct, deleterious impact on watersheds. To address these detrimental impacts, storm water regulations have been authored on federal, state, and local levels, which …

Effect Of Renin Angiotensin System Inhibition On Cardiovascular Sequelae In Elderly Hypertensive Patients With Insulin Resistance, Hala Zreikat Sep 2009

Effect Of Renin Angiotensin System Inhibition On Cardiovascular Sequelae In Elderly Hypertensive Patients With Insulin Resistance, Hala Zreikat

Theses and Dissertations

Background: Insulin resistance may play a pathogenic role in cardiovascular disease (CVD). Resistance to insulin has been associated with obesity, hypertension, and abnormal glucose and lipid metabolism. The constellation of these features among insulin resistant subjects has been called the metabolic syndrome. Prevalence of the metabolic syndrome increases with age and is most common in the elderly. Different criteria have been proposed to define the metabolic syndrome (ATP, WHO, AACE, EGIR). Current management of metabolic syndrome focuses on the specific risk factors that the patient may have without targeting the underlying insulin resistance. Angiotensin Converting Enzyme Inhibitors (ACEI) and Angiotensin …

N-Glycosylation Status Of E-Cadherin Controls Cytoskeletal Dynamics Through The Organization Of Distinct Β-Catenin- And Γ-Catenin-Containing Ajs., Basem T Jamal, Mihai Nita-Lazar, Zhennan Gao, Bakr Amin, Janice Walker, Maria A Kukuruzinska

Department of Pathology, Anatomy, and Cell Biology Faculty Papers

N-glycosylation of E-cadherin has been shown to inhibit cell-cell adhesion. Specifically, our recent studies have provided evidence that the reduction of E-cadherin N-glycosylation promoted the recruitment of stabilizing components, vinculin and serine/threonine protein phosphatase 2A (PP2A), to adherens junctions (AJs) and enhanced the association of AJs with the actin cytoskeleton. Here, we examined the details of how N-glycosylation of E-cadherin affected the molecular organization of AJs and their cytoskeletal interactions. Using the hypoglycosylated E-cadherin variant, V13, we show that V13/β-catenin complexes preferentially interacted with PP2A and with the microtubule motor protein dynein. This correlated with dephosphorylation of the microtubule-associated protein …

Orbital Aspergillus Infection Mimicking A Tumour: A Case Report, Muhammad Ahsan Zafar, Syeda Sidra Waheed, Ather Enam

Section of Neurosurgery

A 14-year-old male presented to the neurosurgical clinic with swelling just above the right eye which had been growing slowly for the last eight years. The swelling first appeared following a non-penetrating trauma eight years ago. On examination it was a non-tender, non-erythematous, firm, round swelling causing marked proptosis and diplopia on downward gaze only. The visual acuity was intact. MRI showed an intraorbital, extraconal mass isointense on T1 and hypointense on T2 imaging. A diagnosis of orbital tumor was made. A white, friable mass consistent with meningioma was resected. However histopathology report later showed it to be an Aspergilloma. …
