School of Medicine Publications

Aims/hypothesis: TNF-alpha levels are increased in obesity and type 2 diabetes. The regulation of TNF-alpha converting enzyme (TACE) and its inhibitor, tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinase 3 (TIMP3), in human type 2 diabetes is unknown.

Methods: We examined TACE/TIMP3 regulation: (1) in lean and obese normal glucose tolerant (NGT) individuals and in type 2 diabetes patients; (2) following 6 h of lipid/saline infusion in NGT individuals; and (3) in cultured human myotubes from lean NGT individuals incubated with palmitate. Insulin sensitivity was assessed by a euglycaemic clamp and TACE/TIMP3 was evaluated by confocal microscopy, RT-PCR, western blotting and an in vitro …

Department of Surgery Faculty Papers

EuroSCORE (European System for Cardiac Operative Risk Evaluation) used for calculating the risk of the postoperative mortality rate for patients undergoing open-heart surgery may be able to predict postoperative complications as well. Consecutive cases of isolated on-pump coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) (n=1552) performed between 1991 and 2006 at our hospital group were placed into a systematic database. Patients were stratified using additive EuroSCORE. Incidence of postoperative mortality, morbidity (bleeding, heart failure, mediastinitis, pneumonia, myocardial infarction, renal failure, and stroke), and recovery time (intubation time, ICU stay, and postoperative length of stay) was assessed in each EuroSCORE group. EuroSCORE was …

Applying The Service Profit Chain To The Gaming Industry, Emphasizing On Table Games Dealers, In Las Vegas, David Lee

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Gaming has been a significant part of the tourism industry in Las Vegas. Most gamblers come to Las Vegas hoping to win big, but are often disappointed. So what keeps people coming back time and again to contribute to Las Vegas’ economy? The casinos and the gaming industry believe that the unique and individual service guests experience at their establishment is the primary reason why guests return. For example, at Harrah's employees are upbeat and positive in an effort to keep customers returning; at the Venetian the core value instilled in each and every employee is to provide un-matched guest …

Proceeding With (Pre)Caution: Environmental Principles As Interpretive Tools In Applications For Pre-Trial Injunctions, Heather Mcleod-Kilmurray Oct 2009

Proceeding With (Pre)Caution: Environmental Principles As Interpretive Tools In Applications For Pre-Trial Injunctions, Heather Mcleod-Kilmurray

Dalhousie Law Journal

In many cases of imminent environmental harm, a trial may take years. To prevent harm in the meantime, pre-trial injunctions are essential. The author highlights the important role of interlocutory injunctions in Canadian environmental litigation, uncovers the judicial assumptions and attitudes toward the environment which these decisions reveal, and proposes a precautionary approach to interpreting the interlocutory injunction test in environmental cases. She argues that prevailing judicial attitudes and presumptions in relation to environmental claims often negatively influence how the discretionary elements in procedural rules governing pre-trial injunctions are applied. Although there has been much analysis of principles such as …

Ministerial Misfeasance: R. V. Morris And A Unique Early Privacy Breach, Barry Cahill

Dalhousie Law Journal

According to Klein &Kratchanov (Government Information: The Right to Information and Protection of Privacy in Canada, 2nd ed., 2009), "there is one reported case of a successful private prosecution for violation of an access statute through the unauthorized release of personal information. The matter arose under a former Nova Scotia Act and resulted in a modest fine being imposed against a Minister of the Crown who had disclosed information about the complainant." What follows is a close, contextual study of a case unique in the short history of privacy law in Canada, from the perspective of the thirty-year development of …

Journeys To 20th Street: The Inner City As Critical Pedagogical Space For Legal Education, Sarah Buhler Oct 2009

Journeys To 20th Street: The Inner City As Critical Pedagogical Space For Legal Education, Sarah Buhler

Dalhousie Law Journal

This essay draws on critical geographical theories to propose that the location of clinical legal education programs in inner city space can affect the production of professional identities and ideologies oflaw students. It anchors its analysis in an examination of the clinical law program at the University of Saskatchewan College of Law, where students work at a poverty law clinic in Saskatoon's inner city. The paper first turns to a critical examination of law school space, which can function to promote dominant notions about law and legal practice. The author cautions that ifnot navigated attentively, thejourney to inner city space …

The Definition Of "Accident" In Canadian Coverage Cases And The Unspoken "Useful Purpose" Test, Eric J. Adams Oct 2009

The Definition Of "Accident" In Canadian Coverage Cases And The Unspoken "Useful Purpose" Test, Eric J. Adams

Dalhousie Law Journal

Thispaper argues that courts tacitly weigh risks againstrewards when constructing the meaning of the term "accident." It suggests the phrase "courting the risk" takes on two distinct meanings. Firstly, at some point, the risks associated with an activity are said to be so substantial as to suggest an insured expected and, thus, courted any resulting losses.. Secondly, a party is deemed to court the risk of. loss if acting solely for the experience of risk, in and of itself, and not for any other redeeming benefit. The author outlines the evolution of the term "accident" in the case law and contrasts …

From The Invisible Commemoration Of Tiananmen To China’S Festive 60th Birthday, François Lachapelle Sep 2009

From The Invisible Commemoration Of Tiananmen To China’S Festive 60th Birthday, François Lachapelle

China Beat Blog: Archive 2008-2012

This essay originally appeared on David Ownby’s blog, China at Our Gates, in June. It is reposted in full here with the permission of that site.

2009 is no piece of cake for Chinese officialdom. Having survived the invisible torment of the twentieth anniversary of Tiananmen they turn now to the preparation for the 60th birthday of the People’s Republic. Despite daily high temperatures in the 30s in North China, one wonders if Peking bureaucrats might be suffering from cold sweats.

Certain early indicators indicate that the event is being taken seriously. Visas are being restricted, as they were in …
