Say Syrah, Syrah: Savoring The Rewards Of Patience, Contemplation, And Tlz, Thomas G. Plante

Psychology

My family and I fondly say that we have the best syrah Menlo Park has to offer. (Although to our knowledge, it is the only syrah grown in Menlo Park.) While that doesn’t put us in the league of prominent winemaking alumni and friends of Santa Clara—including Michael Mondavi ’66, the Sebastianis, and Fess Parker—it is the result of a decade of growing grapes at our home on the Peninsula.

Contributing Factors To Pointcut Fragility, Phil Greenwood, Awais Rashid, Raffi Khatchadourian Oct 2009

Contributing Factors To Pointcut Fragility, Phil Greenwood, Awais Rashid, Raffi Khatchadourian

Publications and Research

Pointcut fragility is a well-documented problem of Aspect-Oriented Programming with changes to the base-code causing join points to incorrectly fall in or out of scope. In order to combat this problem a tool was developed that provides mechanical assistance to pointcut maintenance. This tool relied on the deep structural commonalities between program elements to detect when pointcut fragility occurs. During the assessment of this tool a number of common practices were uncovered that were employed both in the aspect and base-code that contributed to or prevented pointcut fragility. This paper documents the practices uncovered and describes how they can affect …

Antibiotic And Disinfectant Resistance Of Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus, Christopher Justin Steed Oct 2009

Antibiotic And Disinfectant Resistance Of Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus, Christopher Justin Steed

Senior Honors Theses

Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is a bacterium that has developed an increasing resistance to antibiotic drugs. This bacterium is very prevalent in hospitals but is becoming more prevalent in community-based settings. The goals of this research are to test the antibiotic sensitivity of two strains of MRSA, discover the proper disinfectants to use in households and hospital settings, and develop and test antibiotic derivatives to determine the future of antibiotic use against this bacterium. Research indicated that each strain was resistant to β-lactam antibiotics as well as other antibiotics. Each strain tested was unique in its resistance against antibiotics, thus …

Cultural Competency: A Viable Approach To Health Disparities In Urban Schools, Sterling Saddler, A. Dexter Samuels, Roger Cleveland, Tiffany G. Tyler Oct 2009

Cultural Competency: A Viable Approach To Health Disparities In Urban Schools, Sterling Saddler, A. Dexter Samuels, Roger Cleveland, Tiffany G. Tyler

Journal of Praxis in Multicultural Education

This paper encapsulates a large body of work on cultural mismatch, cultural competency and their interrelation with health disparities in urban schools. Cultural mismatch is the cultural difference between formal institutions and the populations they serve, while cultural competency is defined as the integration and transformation of knowledge about individuals and groups of people into specific standards, policies, practices, and attitudes used in appropriate cultural settings to increase the quality of services (Cross, 1989). As noted in this paper, disparities include the racial, economic, and cultural issues affecting the health of school age children. Using cultural competency as a theoretical …

Use Of Artificial Sweeteners And Fat-Modified Foods In Weight Loss Maintainers And Always-Normal Weight Individuals, Suzanne Phelan, W. Lang, D. Jordan, Rena R. Wing

Kinesiology and Public Health

Objective: The purpose of this study was to compare the dietary strategies, and use of fat- and sugar-modified foods and beverages in a weight loss maintainer group (WLM) and an always-normal weight group (NW).
Subjects: WLM (N=172) had maintained ≥10% weight loss for 11.5 years, and had a body mass index (BMI) of 22.0 kg m-2. NW (N=131) had a BMI of 21.3 kg m-2 and no history of being overweight. Three, 24-h recalls on random, non-consecutive days were used to assess dietary intake.
Results: WLM reported consuming a diet that was lower in fat (28.7 vs 32.6%, PConclusions: …

Ethnobotanical Leaflets

Healing of chronic lower extremity wounds is a global problem, especially in developing countries where traditional medicine is often used by the people in remote places. India has a rich tradition of plant based knowledge pertinent to healthcare. A survey of ethnomedicinal plant species used by Malayali’s to heal cut/ wounds in Vattal Hills of Dharmapuri was made. A large number of plants/ extracts/ decoctions/ pastes are used by tribals to heal wounds, cuts and burns. In the present study, an attempt has been made to document ethnobotanical knowledge base and methods employed by Malayali’s for treatment of cut/ wounds. …

Copper Oxide Nanoparticles Induce Oxidative Stress And Cytotoxicity In Airway Epithelial Cells, Baher Fahmy, Stephania A. Cormier Oct 2009

Copper Oxide Nanoparticles Induce Oxidative Stress And Cytotoxicity In Airway Epithelial Cells, Baher Fahmy, Stephania A. Cormier

Faculty Publications

Metal oxide nanoparticles are often used as industrial catalysts and elevated levels of these particles have been clearly demonstrated at sites surrounding factories. To date, limited toxicity data on metal oxide nanoparticles are available. To understand the impact of these airborne pollutants on the respiratory system, airway epithelial (HEp-2) cells were exposed to increasing doses of silicon oxide (SiO2), ferric oxide (Fe2O3) and copper oxide (CuO) nanoparticles, the leading metal oxides found in ambient air surrounding factories. CuO induced the greatest amount of cytotoxicity in a dose-dependent manner; while even high doses (400 μg/cm2) of SiO2 and Fe2O3 were non-toxic …

Theoretical And Numerical Study Of Mlem And Osem Reconstruction Algorithms For Motion Correction In Emission Tomography, Joyoni Dey, Michael A. King Oct 2009

Theoretical And Numerical Study Of Mlem And Osem Reconstruction Algorithms For Motion Correction In Emission Tomography, Joyoni Dey, Michael A. King

Faculty Publications

Patient body-motion and respiratory-motion impacts the image quality of cardiac SPECT and PET perfusion images. Several algorithms exist in the literature to correct for motion within the iterative maximum-likelihood reconstruction framework. In this work, three algorithms are derived starting with Poisson statistics to correct for patient motion. The first one is a motion compensated MLEM algorithm (MC-MLEM). The next two algorithms called MGEM-1 and MGEM-2 (short for Motion Gated OSEM, 1 and 2) use the motion states as subsets, in two different ways. Experiments were performed with NCAT phantoms (with exactly known motion) as the source and attenuation distributions. Experiments …

Proteomic And Phospho-Proteomic Profile Of Human Platelets In Basal, Resting State: Insights Into Integrin Signaling, Amir H. Qureshi, Vineet Chaoji, Dony Maiguel, Mohd Hafeez Faridi, Constantinos J. Barth, Saeed M. Salem, Mudita Singhal, Darren Stoub, Bryan Krastins, Mitsunori Ogihara, Mohammed J. Zaki, Vineet Gupta

Faculty Work Comprehensive List

During atherogenesis and vascular inflammation quiescent platelets are activated to increase the surface expression and ligand affinity of the integrin αIIbβ3 via inside-out signaling. Diverse signals such as thrombin, ADP and epinephrine transduce signals through their respective GPCRs to activate protein kinases that ultimately lead to the phosphorylation of the cytoplasmic tail of the integrin αIIbβ3 and augment its function. The signaling pathways that transmit signals from the GPCR to the cytosolic domain of the integrin are not well defined. In an effort to better understand these pathways, we employed a combination of proteomic profiling and computational analyses of isolated …
