School-Based Services For Traumatized Refugee Children, Dana Doran-Myers, Susan C. Davies

In 1991, civil war raged in Somalia and the country’s infrastructure began to disintegrate. Since then, millions have fled the violence and instability. Many Somali refugees have settled in the United States; Ohio now has the second larg- est settlement of Somali refugees in the country. Most of these refugees reside in the Columbus area, where numerous out- reach services have been developed. The Somalis are one of many refugee popula- tions that have enrolled children in Ohio schools. In such cases, there is often little or no warning of the children’s arrival and thus little time to prepare a …

The Effect Of All-Trans Retinoic Acid And Fatty Acids On Mcf-7 Breast Cancer Cell Progression, David A. Brown Oct 2009

The Effect Of All-Trans Retinoic Acid And Fatty Acids On Mcf-7 Breast Cancer Cell Progression, David A. Brown

Master's Theses

Vitamin A metabolites and retinoids may slow the progression of breast cancer and elicit anti-neoplastic properties similar to those of omega-3 fatty acids. Studies using animal models show a decrease in the incidence, growth and metastisis of mammary tumors in the presence of specific fatty acids. This effect is also seen with use of retinoids, specifically all-trans retinoic acid (AtRA). Thus, fatty acids may also alter retinoid homeostasis in mammary carcinoma cells (MCF-7s). The potential for inter/co dependency among fatty acids and retinoids is considerable, and here it has been hypothesized that a decrease in cancer progression will occur in …

Contextual Factors Influencing The Acute Care Registered Nurse's Response To Clinical Alarms, Kathleen Mary Stacy Phd Oct 2009

Contextual Factors Influencing The Acute Care Registered Nurse's Response To Clinical Alarms, Kathleen Mary Stacy Phd

Dissertations

Nurses are faced with a multitude of clinical alarms on a daily basis. There is an inherent expectation that upon hearing an alarm the nurse will immediately respond to assess the situation and initiate appropriate action to correct the problem. Yet this does not always occur. Issues with alarm responsiveness can pose a serious threat to patient safety. The purpose of this qualitative study was to develop a broader understanding of the contextual factors that influenced the acute care nurse's response to clinical alarms. This study used an interpretive phenomenological methodology to study the lived experiences of the nurses who …

The Impact Of Retrotransposons On Human Genome Evolution, Richard Cordaux, Mark A. Batzer Oct 2009

The Impact Of Retrotransposons On Human Genome Evolution, Richard Cordaux, Mark A. Batzer

Faculty Publications

Their ability to move within genomes gives transposable elements an intrinsic propensity to affect genome evolution. Non-long terminal repeat (LTR) retrotransposons including LINE-1, Alu and SVA elements have proliferated over the past 80 million years of primate evolution and now account for approximately one-third of the human genome. In this Review, we focus on this major class of elements and discuss the many ways that they affect the human genome: from generating insertion mutations and genomic instability to altering gene expression and contributing to genetic innovation. Increasingly detailed analyses of human and other primate genomes are revealing the scale and …

The Impact Of News Coverage On Conflict: Toward Greater Understanding, Richard C. Reuben Oct 2009

The Impact Of News Coverage On Conflict: Toward Greater Understanding, Richard C. Reuben

Faculty Publications

This article develops an approach for the empirical study of the news media’s impact on the conflict that it covers. While mass communications research has studied how the news media covers conflict, it has not taken the next step of assessing the impact of that coverage. This article contends that such an inquiry is necessarily an inter-disciplinary task, and joins conflict theory with mass communications research to identify the kinds of questions that may be empirically tested to determine whether the news media is having a constructive or destructive effect on the conflict that it covers.

Cognition And Leisure Time Activities Of Older Adults, Patricia M. Simone, Amie L. Haas Oct 2009

Cognition And Leisure Time Activities Of Older Adults, Patricia M. Simone, Amie L. Haas

Psychology

Older adults have much more leisure time today than they have had in the past. Evidence points to the connection between engagement in physical exercise, a leisure time activity, and the overall health of older adults. Because health is an important issue, especially as we age, it is helpful to know that we have some control over it as we age. Cognition, i.e., our ability to remember, to pay attention, and to think, is also a concern in aging. Is it possible that the choices we make about leisure time activities may influence our cognitive abilities in old age? This …
